Chi Cheng, bassist for the Deftones, got in a severe car accident in November, 2008, and has been in a “semi-conscious state” ever since, according to NME. So what’s a band to do? Get your famous musician friends to donate some cool sh*t for an auction to raise money for his medical bills, obviously.

Deftones front man Chino Moreno expresses his hope for his friend and band mate:

“I truly believe he will return to us one day when he is good and rested with a great story to tell in his off the wall Cheng sense of humour. Chi is one tuff ‘MF’ and if anyone can make it through this, it’s gonna be him.”[photogallerylink id=2178]

Prizes include a day of studio time with Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus, signed instruments and equipment from bands like Metallica, My Chemical Romance, System of a Down and Slayer, plus a trip to see HIM on New Years in Finland.

Bidding for the Chi Cheng auction is open until tomorrow. Check it out here. It’ll be money well spent!

This week, they are performing at Avalon Hollywood as a fundraiser for the Chi Ling Cheng’s Special Needs Trust, which was created to pay for the big medical costs of the recovery of Chi. If you wanna help Chi, you may by going to www.deftones.com.

On my behalf, the best of the luck for Chi and his family, hope you get well soon cause we can’t wait to see you back with Deftones and keep the awesome tunes coming! It sometimes seems that the worst things happen only to the good people, the prepared, and the worthy… it’s really sad.

To all the reviewers out there:

The clean singing on Norma Jean’s new album “The Anti Mother” does not sound like Emo. I mean really. Saying that is both an insult to Norma Jean and Emo.

Chino Moreno does not sound like an Emo singer. At all. Have you ever even heard Emo? Go Listen to Sunny Day Real Estate or Appleseed Cast.

Cory Brandon does not sound Emo. That is just stupid. The guy has a gruff singing voice, riddled with the age that all his screaming gives it.

Seriously I am so freaking sick of everyone labeling the singing on any hardcore album Emo. That is ridiculous. Singing does not equal Emo.

This has been a public service announcement…

Since there has not been much news regarding Chi Cheng’s health, I thought I’d post up something slightly Deftones related. This is from Deftones’ frontman, Chino Moreno’s side project, Team Sleep. One of their first live performances in 2001 and I was actually in attendance. Some of the album had leaked on the internet prior to this show, so people had an idea of what to expect. What I didn’t expect was that I was about to witness some of the most insane drumming I had ever seen. Enter Mr. Zach Hill around the 5 minute mark. This clip is a little long, but worth the wait. When the album leaked, this track was called “Natalie Portman.” It ended up as “Live from the Stage” on the self titled full length release…this version is better.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Thursday 30th October):

The show is taped in front of a live audience and although scheduled to perform only two songs, The Beatles end up doing four. Here’s their complete performance. It seems very intimate with the audience literally inches away from them and the boys are obviously enjoying themselves.

Babble

Today’s blog has been a tricky one. What do I do with it? After all, anyone who has clicked on The Rockmine Almanac tab at the top of the front page will have seen today’s entry already. That said, one of the problems with that page is that it doesn’t carry tags and so a lot of people who search the blogosphere using them, miss out on it.

So, I’ll ask you to pander to me, yet again while I put out the complete version of The Rockmine Almanac’s listing for today. A standard blog entry for today is included above but if you’ve got time, check out the full version and let me know what you think. Is it complete enough? What am I missing out? As you know, I can include music paper front pages and was intending expanding this with a “Front Page News” as there are way to many great front pages, especially in the U.K. tabloid press.

Seriously, I’d appreciate comments and suggestions for other elements I can include. Anyway, here it is:

Change / Deftones

I watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire
I watched a change in you
It’s like you never had wings
Now you feel so alive
I’ve watched you change

I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed
I watched a change in you
It’s like you never had wings
Now you feel so alive
I’ve watched you change

It’s like you never had wings…
Ahh-ah-aaah (6x)

I look at the cross
Then I look away
Give you the gun
Blow me away

I watched a change in you
It’s like you never had wings
Now you feel so alive
I’ve watched you change
And you feel alive
You feel alive (2x)
I’ve watched you change

It’s like you never had wings…
Ahh-ah-aaah (6x)
You change (3x)
…i’m over…

I’ve been a fan of Deftones for a long time, and in fact they’re one of those bands I’ve been going back to often the last several months. There’s just something about the uniqueness and the whimsical darkness of their sound that draws me in. If you haven’t heard them before but are interested, I suggest you start with the White Pony album. Fieticiera and Knife Prty on the Deftones myspace are from that album and are a few of my favorites. But then, you know me, when I like a band its because all their songs are more or less my favorites. I’m one of those “album people”, you know? I prefer listening to whole albums as opposed to mix tapes or the radio.

Moving on with my point, though, I’m also a huge fan of Norma Jean. My musical taste swings from extremes and on one end is the folky bands like this one and this one . Including everything in between, I also have a place in my heart for harder music like modern metal bands. Thats where Norma Jean comes in.

Last week my buddy Jon from Tejas reminded me of Norma Jeans new album coming out. I thought it was ironic since Jon and I were hanging out when we first picked up NJ’s last album, Redeemer, which has since made its way into my top 5 albums of all time.

The less obvious reason I’m excited about all this is because I’ve been listening to the peak tracks on Norma Jean’s myspace, getting a taste of the new record. I’m a fan of bands that can change their feel and sound a bit from album to album. Each of NJ’s last three albums are like this, and the new one coming out in August (The Anti Mother) is no different. Whats more, they’re working with Chino Moreno, the singer of Deftones.

I’m pumped, and can’t wait for the release.

I just wish they were on some tour other than the Warped Tour. What is more annoying than the Warped Tour?
