Back in October, HardMac reported that Apple (s aapl) was busy testing Intel’s (s intc) new “Gulftown” Xeon chip ahead of its inclusion in a refresh of the Mac Pro, which is slated for release early next year. The 32nm Gulftown chip is an evolution of the 45nm architecture found in the currently-shipping 2009 Mac Pro model.

Gulftown will be sold under the Core i9 brand name for consumer machines, while its server counterpart will be labeled the Xeon 5600 series. HardMac’s sources suggested Apple would have short-term exclusive use of the chip, much as it did for each of the last two “Xeon” revisions of the Mac Pro line.

Now, according to AppleInsider, Polish website PCLab last week published performance test results on Gulftown, showing that the new chips operated at nearly twice the speed of the previous generation chips during parallel tasks. In addition, they consumed only 50 percent as much power doing so. Sadly, the performance results are no longer available. PCLab explains:

Earlier this year I bought a 2009 Mac Pro. And – as sheer luck would have it – my purchase was delayed by one week… the very same week, as it happens, that Apple refreshed the Mac Pro line. I scoured the online store, meticulously comparing specs and searching the web for in-depth reviews of the new machine from the sort of geeks who spend their days doing nothing but benchmark testing. In short, I learned that while the Mac Pro prices went up, clock speeds came down – but I was reassured by those “in the know” that it didn’t matter the cores were (marginally) slower than before. I was still getting a more powerful machine than I’d ever need. I don’t mind admitting, though, for what I paid, I wanted my Mac Pro to be light years ahead of everything else, and I wanted it to stay that way for a long time! That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Still, Gulftown will squeeze-in an extra four physical cores above the eight I currently enjoy, and provide an extra four megabytes of L3 cache over the eight offered by my suddenly lowly-by-comparison machine. And don’t forget that 50 percent power-saving…

I’m only partially joking. Setting aside my shameful greed for ever-more-powerful hardware, the fact remains that my many-cored 2009 Mac Pro is woefully under-utilized. I do a fair bit of audio and video editing, but none of the software I use takes full advantage of multiple-processor cores. In addition, none of it is optimized for the 64-bit architecture of my machine or its Snow Leopard operating system. Final Cut doesn’t even try to be 64-bit compatible. Adobe CS4 Master Collection (in itself almost the price of a Mac Pro!) stubbornly remains a 32-bit suite.

So the bottom line is that my gloriously powerful and impressive Mac Pro is still sporting its (virtual) training wheels because, frankly, developers are dragging their heels updating their software.

That doesn’t stop me wanting the new Mac Pro, of course. Like I said, I’m greedy. But I’m also learning. And even if Apple releases this behemoth early in 2010, I don’t think I’ll be too frustrated. News of breathtakingly-more-powerful machines is tantalizing, to be sure, but until software developers really get behind this new hardware, whatever advantages these powerful new chips and architectures promise remains almost entirely academic.

Come fatto presente in altri post su questo blog, le ricerche sull’ibridazione uomo-macchina, sulla possibilità di comandare  apparecchi elettronici, mano robotiche e sedie a rotelle (ed in futuro anche automobili) mediante impulsi cerebrali non rappresentano una novità assoluta, ma sono il frutto di un’attività che impegna da tempo illustri esponenti del mondo accademico, tra cui, sicuramente il più noto, Kevin Warwick, Professore di Cibernetica all’Università di Reading (cfr. il progetto “Cyborg 1.0″ del 1998 e “Cyborg 2.0″ del 2002)

L’articolo de La Stampa è interessante perché ci rimarca come l’attenzione dell’industria (Intel, Toyota) sia destinata a rendere operante lo scenario finora realizzato nei laboratori delle università.

Non si tratta di fantascienza, ma di realtà non conosciuta ai più.

E’ importante ragionare su questi temi, illustrarli e pensare come affrontarli. Occorre anche in questo caso una convergenza interdisciplinare, in grado di analizzare e prevedere gli effetti sociali dell’introduzione di tali tecnologie, quando saranno su larga scala, per poi sindacare le soluzioni giuridiche con il supporto di tutte le scienze utili a comprendere quale tipo di modernizzazione vogliamo per la nostra società (mi riferisco all’etica, alla filosofia, alla sociologia e, ovviamente, alla politica ed al diritto).

Para los partidarios de esta teoría de conspiración la verdadera naturaleza de las chemtrails sería conocida por sólo unos pocos y su objetivo sería causar daños de algún tipo a la población.

El chemtrail no sale de los motores del avión: Si se tiene en cuenta que las estelas de condensación salen de los motores de la aeronave, la existencia de estelas que no salgan de ellos constituye una prueba de que no son tales.

Aparición de enfermedades: Algunos partidarios de las chemtrails apuntan a la supuesta aparición de nuevas enfermedades tras la aparición de los chemtrails, lo que constituiría una prueba de que forman parte de un programa de genocidio de la población.

Los experimentos se realizaban con sustancias que se decían inofensivas como el zinc y sulfuro de cadmio, pero se conoce su peligrosidad por generar cáncer de pulmón y hasta los propios Aliados lo utilizaron como arma qúimica. Sin contar diversos virus a los que fue sometida la población como la bacteria E. coli, al bacilo globigii que imita el ántrax, y a la bacteria Serratia.

Ahora, veamos el reloj mundial y nos daremos cuenta cuales son las principales causas de muertes alrededor del globo. Cabe destacar que este reloj es alimentado por la información de los países alineados a la OMS (Organización Mundial de la Salud). O chip será instalado no pára brisas do carros e terão seus sinais captados por antenas instaladas pelas cidades. Todos os dados serão sigilosos e de propriedade dos órgão de trânsitos e eventualmente da polícia. A implantação deve começar a ser feita durante o ano que vem e deve se estender por um período de até cinco anos.

Certas reclamações surgiram atestando falta de privacidade. Mas o fato é que esta tecnologia, chamada de Siniav (Sistema Nacional de Identificação Automática de Veículos), poderá ser uma aliada no combate aos crimes, à localização de veículos roubados e também às fraudes que ocorrem no sistema veicular brasileiro, uma vez que captará também informações sobre licenciamento, IPVA e multas atrasadas.

John and I had a great time in Tennessee.  We went to a Vols game on Saturday and to the Smokey Mountains on Sunday.  Friday night and Monday morning we spent driving.

We met our friends Mark and Julia at the game and had a great time.  It didn’t seem like it had been 13 years since we last saw them.  And the Vols won.  And the the food at the Mellow Mushroom was fantastic.

I have to say, though, I had forgotten how incredibly uncomfortable it is to sit on bleachers for 3 hours.  I think I pinched a nerve – my lower back and lower legs ached all day Sunday and Monday and the backs of my thighs still feel like I ran another half marathon.

The Smokey Mountains were still beautiful – even in rainy, cold weather.  Tourists still drove drove incredibly slow (5 mph, people???) through Cades Cove.  The Little River Road is still very twisty turny.  Gatlinburg is still very gouche.  We had a great time though and started plannin a family trip over spring break.

It is always nice to get back to your home and kids.  Of course Chip was napping when we got home Monday afternoon and yelled “Go Away” and “I want Emmy” when he woke up and saw us.  John was stunned.  I told him it was par for the course and Em has told me in the past that he does the same thing to her when he wakes and expects to see me.  Small consolation, but I’ll take it.

Mare’s welcome home hug at school pick up more than made up for it.  And even though I had to force the extended hug, Bird was obviously pleased as well.

Wow, it’s been a long time! I’m sure all three of you have been diligently checking the blog every day, then crying in disappointment that I haven’t posted in so long. Sorry about that. Been hiding out a bit, trying to recharge after this insane 18 months at work, but also reading obsessively and working on the last chapter of the Suhaila book. Almost done!

So Chip and I were watching the news on the comedy channel last night (our local NBC affiliate run by the journalism school at MU, for anyone who might not remember what I’m talking about). We haven’t had the TV on, except for movies, more than two or three times in the past couple of months. We’re just off it completely, and the comedy channel is all we get (still), so it’s not worth turning on most of the time anyway.

We were watching last night so he could get highlights from the MU game. The weekend newscast crew is often even more entertaining than usual, because the professionals get the night off and basically that means the monkeys are running the zoo. Crazy swings of the camera, bizarre weather forecasts, awkward pauses and glances off-screen, WAY over-enthusiastic sports reports, off-center camera angles, etc.

Here’s what kept us captivated through the entire broadcast. This feels a little mean, but come on! It’s hard to believe they let this poor girl on camera wearing this … this … this THING.

It was like a reverse mullet, long in front and short in back. Underneath she appeared to be wearing JEANS, which I can’t say I’ve ever seen a weather person wear. These kind of long-flounces-in-front sweaters are in style right now, and they are cool when worn appropriately. But BELTED? And over jeans on TV? Even these two Hillbilly Hill rednecks know that ain’t right.

In other news, I rode the new zipline today! Intel’in bu fikri birçoğumuza şu an için fantastik gelse de, bununla ilgili çalışmaların başlanıldığına dair dedikodular ortalıklarda dolanıyor bile. Beyin dalgalarıyla etkileşime giren çip, beyinden aldığı komutları bilgisayara aktaracak ve bilgisayar da bu komutları yerine getirecek.

Intel adına çalışan kavramsal sinir bilimleri uzmanı Dean Pomerleau, tüm bu ütopik fikrin arkasındaki isim. Gelecekte de bu ismi sıkça duyacağız gibi gözüküyor. Uzmanlık alanları arasında, sinir hücrelerinin kavramsal anlamda programlanabilmesi, gelişen yapay zeka, insan arabirimine sahip robotlar olan Pomerleau, fikri gibi fantastik bir insan. Geleceğin yazılmamış sayfalarında yerini almak için şimdiden sıkı bir çalışmaya girmiş durumda.

Dean Pomerleau, Intel tarafındaki görevini, beyin dalgalarının mekanizmasını çözmek ve çiplerle entegre etmek olarak tanımlıyor. fMRI, MEG, EEG ve ECoG gibi beyin tarama teknolojilerini bu alanda kullanmak isteyen Pomerleau, “Şu an için insanlar bu fikre uzak dursa da, gelecekte eminim birçok insan, teknolojinin tamamen güvenilir olduğunu idrak edecek ve hayatlarını kolaylaştıracaktır” diyor.

Komplo teorisyenleri ise hemen iş başı yaptı ve konuyla ilgili olarak, “Ya hükümet, bu çiplere erişim sağlamayı başarırsa?” sorusunu ortaya attı. Ayrıca bu teknoloji, sinir hücreleri sorunlu, felçli hastaların da tekrar hareket edebilmelerini, diğer insanlarla etkileşime girmelerini sağlayabilir.

Last night I started tackeling the wallpaper in the powder room.  The wood floors are going in at some point (they are delivered and waiting) and I’m having the guy install them in the powder room as well, even though that room isn’t officially a room to be rehabbed by the contractor.  The crew tore out the toilet and vanity and I paid the plumber to get the pipes ready for the pedestal sink.

My brother took a hammer drill to the floor yesterday and removed the two layers of tile that were in there. So at that point, technically, the floors could be installed.  But when I got home yesterday I saw that he didn’t take the tile off the wall (there was only one row at the base of the wall.)  So yesterday afternoon I took a tool I found in the crew’s arsenal and chipped off the tile.  Which, of course, took off chunks of plaster.  So I needed to fix that before the guy installed the floors, but before I could plaster the walls I needed to remove the wall paper.  And before I did that, I needed to remove the switch plates.  Enter Chip.

I was searching for a screwdriver when John got home from work.  I told Chip to go ask daddy to find me a flat head screwdriver.  John sent him back with one of those multi-tip doohickeys and Chip was upset that it wasn’t the right kind.  I showed him how it worked, though, and then you would have thought I showed him his first piece of sliced bread.

I asked him if he wanted to help me remove the the switchplate and he started jumping up and down frantically.  He was so excited.  Then I lifted him up and he exclaimed
“This is going to be sooooo cool!”.  And then I let him turn the screw all by himself and he was thrilled.  Amazingly thrilled.  The kid loves this stuff.
