O Chocolate Garoto vem na forma de Papai Noel para este final de ano.

Este é um pouco maior do que aqueles tradicionais que nossas mães costumam pendurar nas árvores de Natal (vamos combinar, muito melhor do que as tradicionais e inúteis bolas vermelhas).

Mas uma coisa que não vou me acostumar nunca é estes chocolates sazonais serem ocos. Não adianta, eu sempre espero que sejam maciços ou recheados de alguma coisa, quem sabe brigadeiro, um delicioso marshmallow, m&m…por favor, coloquem um recheio!!!

É gostoso…mas não chega a ser uma delícia!

Dear Diary,

      I have a confession to make. Since moving last february I have made friends with a female gas attendant at the ESSO near my house. After coming in several times, she warmed up to me and we started talking and then she started to ask me personal questions to get to know me better. She asked me if I was married or if I had a boyfriend, and since I am such a private person in general I simply said no. She seemed as if she was raised in a very traditional home and wouldn’t be open to “unconventional lifestyles”  so every time she asked me I would answer no. 

     After about the 15th time of asking me through a couple months I finally relented and said yes, I indeed did have a boyfriend. She asked how we had met and I fabricated a story of how I had met my new prince charming. Over the course of several stopovers for smokes and chocolate bars in the coming months, I would give her little updates on my relationship with my new, gorgeous, and extremely athletic boyfriend.  Every now and then I would throw in some trite obstacle like “we had a fight” or “he is being difficult”  but then we would always make up. 

      It has now been 10 months and I cannot stop! The other day when I was buying my cigarettes, she asked how he was. I said we were doing great! She asked if we were going to get married but I said we were not at that point yet.  She asked me if we were thinking about moving in together and I said “actually yes, that is something we have discussed” Diary she was so happy for us! I said it was a good idea for us to live together first before I think about marrying him.

    Dear diary I think this has gotten out of hand. But, I cannot stop! In a few months I am thinking of telling her that my boyfriend has proposed to me!  Dear diary, help me!

I finished a box in one sitting.

First time I bought this was during my first Singapore trip last Dec. 2008. Bought it at Watson’s for SGD 3.65. I guess they only have this on stock during the Christmas Season.

I love the cream inside! I guess that’s what makes it unique from other chocolates. It says store below 23 degrees, but I like it better when the cream is melted…=)

Look at the details of the box's design...so cute!

The shape is similar to Hershey's Kisses chocolate.

Wow, it’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is this thursday! That means only four weeks until Christmas ~ have you started your shopping yet? Even if you’re one of those super organized people who shops all year for your Christmas gifts, you may want to pick up another gift or two in the next couple of weeks. After all, shopping is part of the fun of the holidays. The last couple of years my fun holiday shopping has been all online and I love it that way. I can take my time in the comfort of my own home and peruse the many, many beautiful things to choose from while sipping whatever my beverage of the moment might be. Shopping online doesn’t mean forsaking local merchants either and I’ve compiled a few of my personal favorites here for y’all.

Though I have a major weakness for Earl Grey-flavoured things (especially hot chocolate), the king of tea flavours is definitely matcha. If you agree, some matchariffic browser window shopping can be had at Flickr’s Green Tea pool. I’ve also been seeing matcha-inspired shades pop up in fashion lately — though I’m not always interested in what’s hot on the runway (exception: Tim Gunn), I have to admit that the idea of something as minute as nailcolour being a trend is fascinating. I kinda wish there was something similar for the realm of sweets! Orange frosting? Soooo last October!

Each year I put the Christmas tree back in the loft I think, that’s one year nearer the grave; not so many more Christmases until I meet my maker I tell myself.

Does that seem a little morbid? It isn’t meant to be; it’s the way it is. When I pop my clogs, they’ll sell the house and everything in it and a new family will move in and they’ll change everything, starting with that avocado bathroom. They’ll get it just the way they like it and every trace of Doris Brazil will be eradicated; well, almost every trace. One day they’ll venture into the attic and there, tucked away in the corner, under the rafters, they’ll find my Christmas tree. And they might dust it off, and adorn it with baubles and tinsel, and allow it to be the centre of attention one more time… then again, they might see it for the inadequate little thing they think it is and throw it in the boot of their smart family hatchback and drive it to the municipal tip and, without ever knowing it, destroy the last trace of Doris Brazil, ladies’ outfitter and widow of this parish.

That my Christmases are in short supply is an undeniable truth, so should I savour every one that comes my way? That’s not how it works, not for me anyway. Imagine knowing that every present you receive will outlast you;  it used to be clothing, soon it will be the chocolates! More stuff for my relatives to pick over. I find the festive season quite sad, not that I’d ever say it to anyone, apart from you. Actually I do like Christmas; I go around to Flo’s house for Christmas lunch and spend the afternoon with her family but I always make a point of coming back home in the evening so they can have time together, without me. I come home and light the fire and usually I’ll make myself some soup and listen to something on the radio, a Christmas concert if there’s one on.

Although Christmas fills me with trepidation, I don’t like it when it’s all over and I have to put that tree back in the loft. I always say a few words when I do, something like: “See you next year,” and I do feel an obligation to it, as if I’d be letting it down if I’m not there for it in a year. You see, it’s just me and the tree in that house, and we’ve been together a long time. Perhaps the solution is to be buried together although, good luck to them trying to get it into the coffin with me, I always struggle to get it back into its box after Christmas. I want to be cremated anyway, which I thought was eco-friendly but with an articial tree packed in alongside me, I’m not so sure. I bet we’d burn though!

Almost everyone has heard that the biological name of the cacao plant, the source of chocolate, is Theobroma which means “food of the gods”. And chocoholics have definitely felt better about giving in to their cravings for this sinful delicacy after discovering this little snippet of info. Even more so when you read little articles in the newspaper about how dark chocolate is actually good for the health and the heart and you-name-it.

You don’t need any kind of justification to visit Theobroma, the patisserie that marks the beginning of Colaba causeway. Maybe that’s why you primarily see women and girls in this place It might just be because of all the chocolate, though. If you come here on a Saturday, you can be sure that you wont find an empty table. And of course, Christmas and Diwali are really busy times.

As the name suggests, this place is dedicated to the chocolate lover, although there are some amazing non-chocolate pastries on the menu as well. The blueberry cheesecake is pretty delicious, and so is the carrot cake. Apart from the pastries and cakes you get sandwiches (veg and non-veg), ice tea and other beverages as well. Stop here for a snack and dessert when you’re out shopping or just hanging around Colaba causeway.

Anything you order in this place is definitely worth it. We recommend the Chocolate opium or the Tiered temptation if you’re a hard-core chocolate lover. The brownies, all varieties, are really good if you don’t want to stuff yourself. And they’re good for gifting as well! Birthday cakes are available here, on pre-ordering.

The hummus and other condiments are pretty good, as are the breads. The Dense chocolate loaf is definitely a must-buy to satiate those sudden midnight chocolate cravings you might have. But be warned: this cake definitely lives up to its name, with a rich chocolate taste and definitely heavy feel!

Soak up the sweetness and chocolateness without thinking about the calories, and you’ll never regret it Eat a Theobroma pastry once and you’ll remember it for the rest of your life!
