All of this sounds great for the company, but is it a good idea for you?  There are several factors to take into account when considering joining a business during their pre-launch period.  For many people the idea of starting in on a “ground floor opportunity” is exciting and promising and, in many ways it is.  Just like in any company, if you invest in it right out of the gate and it becomes a multi-billion dollar money making machine, you will be a very wealthy person because you were in the right place at the right time with the initiative to do something about it.  However, if you are the type of person who goes around investing in every single new mom-and-pop shop that opens up you will probably go broke rather quickly, as most small businesses never make it out of the tumultuous first few years.

Does the company have a chance at success?  Who’s running the show and do they know what they’re doing?  What is their product; does it have a chance at standing out in the highly competitive marketplace?  What does their business model look like?  Business models in this industry are just as important as the products they are backing.  Most people are looking for a great compensation plan first; they want something that they can leverage and make a large income on with little effort.  Without an outstanding compensation plan to market, it’s a risky endeavor.

And, finally, can you succeed in this business?  What tools does the company have at your disposal to ensure that you personally do well?  For beginners: is there an automated system in place to help you grow your business easily and effectively?  For the experienced online marketer: do they have a way for you to plug in your automated system to work seamlessly with their program?  Who would your upline be?  Are they willing and able to give you the tools and resources you need to start building your business right away?

But all that touchy, feely,  ”life can be wonderful when you join up with us” propaganda is worthless in choosing a business. A MLM business should be chosen with as much, if not more, care than a traditional brick and mortar store. One reason for this may be the low cost of getting started. It may be anywhere between free and $10,000, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to starting a franchise. And so, many people forget common sense, maybe thinking that if it doesn’t work, it’s no big deal because their investment is small.

But it is a big deal. Starting a business, even in MLM, is time consuming. Your business is how the community sees you, so your reputation is at stake. And it will take money, sometimes lots of money, before you see a return on your investment. We have no bankers here to review our proposal, to reject us if it is not a viable business plan. We are  on our own, and because of poor planning on our part, we distributors often find ourselves joining multiple network marketing companies, but not really finding a good fit.
