This weekend a few of us attended the CEDIA conference in Atlanta. Unlike the Consumer Electronics

This weekend a few of us attended the CEDIA conference in Atlanta. Unlike the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which showcases a broader range of tech, CEDIA is focused on custom installation, audio visual solutions, and home automation. This means lots of AV receivers, media servers and home control systems (in addition to wire harnesses, vacuum cleaners, and AV furniture). In such a diverse show, there is a wealth of tech one could highlight, but two clear trends emerged:

      1. A new class of connected “media aggregation” devices. These devices endeavor to manage all media that a consumer might have access to in the home; be it local or remote (YouTube, Netflix, etc)

      2. Controlling home systems via software-based remotes, especially the Apple iPod Touch and iPhone.

iMerge's David Reynaga (left) with Gracenote's Ryan Cox (right) at CEDIA EXPO 2009

Pioneer, Harman, Sony, LG, Samsung, D&M, and others were highlighting devices that scour a local network for music / videos / photos, and attempt to integrate this local content with wealth of online content, from YouTube, Netflix, Hulu and others. Some noteworthy mentions:

Sony showcased several connected AV receivers, “content rich” connected Blu-Ray players like the BDP-N460, and the BDP-CX7000ES 400 disc Blu-Ray megachanger. The BDP-CX7000ES 400, which utilizes disc recognition and metadata services via Gracenote’s MusicID® and VideoID™ products, won the CE Pro BEST Award. When a disc is inserted into the device, Gracenote technology automatically downloads and saves the title, director, some cast information, release year, and genre information. Pretty cool!

Pioneer showed the E TAP, a Blu-Ray player with on-board 1TB hard drive, the ability to stream high-quality audio, Lyrics display, support for Blu-Ray managed copy, and display of connected services such as Yahoo widgets.

Sony's Award-Winning BDP-CX7000ES 400 Megachanger

Home system control continues to be a huge theme at CEDIA. The show featured marquee players such as Control4, AMX, and Crestron, as well as noteworthy newcomer Savant. Control4 was ubiquitous at the show, not only in their always-crowded booth, but in the booths of virtually every major electronics manufacturer, including Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung, and LG.

While plenty of installations still required the advance capabilities of “whole home” control systems, many solution providers are taking advantage of connected, software-based phones. The iPod/iPhone is clearly in the lead; numerous companies showcased the iPod/iPhone as a controller, with solutions ranging from in-wall docks to iPhone Apps. The Chordette Gem, built by Chord Electronics from the UK (shown in Berkeley’s Sumiko Audio booth as a USB DAC), elegantly combined both trends. With a flip of a switch, you can stream audio to it via Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, or A2DP for short, making the iPhone a simultaneous media sever and a remote control.

All of us who attended were excited by the possibilities presented at CEDIA. Gracenote’s home solutions deliver functionality in-line with the trends mentioned above. We were proud to be part of solutions displayed by Sony, Escient, ReQuest, and many others at the show. Be it media recognition, playlisting and recommendations, rich metadata, or search and navigation, Gracenote products should continue to play a key role within the advanced solutions presented at CEDIA each year.
