It’s been quite a few days since my last blog entry. Today is the lucky day for my (few) readers, however, as I’m pleased to announce a new DAILY (or so I hope) entry series.

This is the first entry in the D.A.M.N. (Daily Awesome Music Nugget) series. The goal of “D.A.M.N.” is to share songs, performances, solos, and clips of music that I find to be epic, gnarly, boss, brutal, sick, or whatever synonym of “awesome” one can use.  I will continue to write my album reviews, as I love the album format and will defend and promote it until the end of the time. In this day and age, however, most people seem to respond to and embrace the “single” format more. This blog is for those people, the ones who don’t necessarily choose to listen to music by the album, be it by necessity or choice. Also, I will not necessarily be covering big hit songs, just ones that on the day I write, that I find to be especially awesome.

Without further ado, it’s time to move on with my entry. Today’s song is Audioslave’s “One and the Same.”

The band Audioslave.

This song, simply put, kicks twelve kinds of ass. From the funk-wah guitar intro/chorus of Tom Morello to the punchy groove of the rhythm section, from Chris Cornell’s passionate vocal to the tightness of the composition; there’s so much to like about this song. It’s not hard to get into at all, it’s very funky and poppy, and has a very positive vibe. I can’t say enough about Morello’s guitar work in this tune, it’s everything a Morello fan would want and more. The arpeggiating solo and his effective riffing are fist-pumpingly and toe-tappingly divine.

I can’t get enough of the breakdown immediately following the solo. With only Brad Wilk’s pseudo-tribal drums and Chris Cornell’s monster vocals pulsing through my ears, I find myself clapping and bobbing my head along. This song is a rock grenade with the pin pulled and is guaranteed to improve your mood. Highly recommended.

Slash y Fergie ya han trabajado anteriormente juntos

Ante las críticas de algunos fans, Slash, quien fuera el famoso guitarrista de Guns N’ Roses, defendió en su twitter la colaboración que realizó la cantante de Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, para hacer una nueva versión del clásico “Paradise city”, que posiblemente incluya en su nuevo álbum que saldrá para marzo del 2010.

“Hasta ahora, no hay demasiada gente que haya escuchado a Fergie cantar rock & roll, pero canta mejor que la mayoría de los tipos que conozco. Ella grita con el corazón”, expresó el legendario músico.

En esta nueva producción  colabora con grandes estrellas como Dave Grohl, Flea, Chris Cornell, Duff McKagan,  Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Ozzy Osbourne, entre otros.

En esta nueva versión de “Paradise City” también mete su talento Cypress Hill, en lo que da como mezcla un buen hard-rap.

As I was sitting in the dentist’s chair yesterday, I began thinking about all the silly crushes I had over the years. Well, they weren’t silly at the time and all of them revolved around musicians. Mind you, the idea for this post came about because of my bid to ignore the scraping, whirring, and strange noises going on in my mouth. No, I didn’t have anything but a cleaning done, but it just isn’t natural to hear all that crap going on inside your head. I think that’s why people don’t like the dentist.

But that isn’t the point of this post. No, I’m going to give a pictorial list of my crushes through the years. I hope you find this as funny as I did.

First off:

Yes, Duran Duran. I mentioned in my previous post how I used to daydream (in 3rd grade) how they were going to come save me from my class. They were pretty and non-threatening to a kid.

Next:

Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. I was a teenager by this time. Thirteen or fourteen. He was beautiful and he could SING! Plus those leather pants really were hot. Gr-owl! Of course, this is when my penchant for bad boys developed.

Next:

Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots. This was high school. I saw that hair, those cheekbones, and I forgot all about poor Sebastian. Scott W was like a breath of fresh air. I still hold some affection for him because he’s so crazy cool (even though he’s had some um, problems over the years).

Next:

Chris Cornell formerly of Soundgarden and Audioslave. This was my college crush. Those moody eyes, yum. I thought he was deep and sensitive, I mean, c’mon! Doesn’t he look like a heartbreaker to you??

More recently though:

Mr. Rob Zombie. Don’t ask me why. He doesn’t exactly fit the usual mold of ‘hot’, but I find him very sexy. He’s got the long hair, the beard, the tattoos. He’d be my mother’s worst nightmare come to life. Hubba, hubba!

Back when I was a pre-teen/teen my chonies were all hot for Chris Cornell. For obvious reasons…he is a rock star. I just wanted him to rock scream at me and sing Buckcherry “Crazy Bitch” and I’d get all tatted and stuff. We would be the next Pam/Tommy. Yeah…that didn’t happen. Mostly because I was under 18. I decided to showcase this hot piece of older ass today.

(From the past few weeks actually)

1.  Lufthansa - Wow! Unlike Air Canada, there were complimentary drinks as soon as you sat down and throughout the overseas flight; there were hot towels -twice; there were in-seat entertainment systems that did not break down; there was leg room in economy; and there was a special group who took me off one late connecting Lufthansa flight and zoomed me through the terminal to get to my next Lufthansa flight on time. A pleasure to fly with!

2. Le Stanze di Santa Croce, Florence – This B&B in Florence is on my “Favourites in Florence” list but it never fails to delight. I stayed there on this last trip for 5 nights, and when I told proprietor Mariangela Catalani about the death in my family, she stayed with me all afternoon, giving me tea and talking with me. A day later, I took her artisan tour, which she customized for me to include some favourite shopping spots. Love this place – www.lestanzedisantacroce.com

3.  Waldemar de Boer, PHD and guide – Waldemar led my tour of the Medici Villas and Gardens while I was in Florence. He is an extremely knowledgeable art historian and I learned the right amount of new information about both the Medici family, the Renaissance garden, and painters and architects of the 16th century. 4. New music – I found some time this week to see what’s been happening in the world of music, along with some tunes I heard while on holiday: A. “You’ve Got the Love” – Florence + the Machine ( hear it here); B. “Long Gone” – Chris Cornell featuring Timbaland (hear it here); C. “Papers” – Usher (hear it here); D. “Resto dell’idea” – Marco Carta (hear it here); E. “Il Sole Esiste Per Tutti” – Tiziano Ferro (find it here) … to name a few.

5. I Told You I Was Freaky CD by The Flight of the Conchords – This new CD release contains tunes from the second season of their popular HBO comedy series. They are funnier to watch – you can find them all on YouTube, along with all their other songs. The best cuts are “We’re Both in Love with a Sexy Lady”, “Sugarlumps“ and “Hurt Feelings“ (hear clips here).  My favourite way to de-stress is to watch these two guys from New Zealand!

6. The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet by Colleen McCullough – This paperback was my travelling companion for the trains and planes. I was thoroughly engrossed by it, because McCullough knows how to tell a story (like “The Thornbirds”, for instance) and I have often wondered what happened to the Jane Austen’s Bennet girls after the marriages at the end of “Pride and Prejudice”. This novel focuses on the middle unmarried sister Mary, but has good doses of insights into the not-so-perfect lives of her sisters. A very good read!

7. The Wanda Sykes Show on Fox – This new late-night show replaces “MadTV” on Saturdays at 11 pm, and is a mix of comedy and panel discussion, somewhat similar to the Bill Maher show. However Wanda Sykes is far better at delivering the comedy sections of the show. Last night her panel consisted of Phil Keoghan (of “Amazing Race”), Mary Lynn Rajskub (of “24″), and Daryl Mitchell (of “Brothers”) – an eclectic group but funny when discussing parenting and space travel! You also have to give Wanda credit in her opening monologue of stating she will be the only person on Fox who will not slag Obama!

1. Losing a beloved family member and not knowing why.

2.  I encountered a few situations in the last few weeks that highlighted how difficult it is to be oneself, to be authentic. The desire to adapt to others’ expectations of me is always at battle with the inner voice saying “screw them, be yourself”. Depending on the day, one or the other (and likely sometimes both) dictate my behaviour, so I must appear a little contradictory. This is such a common struggle for many, and one that I’ve been acutely aware of  for most of my adult life… and one that I thought I had come to terms with. But these past weeks have been a stark reminder that I have much more work to do on this, and that the commitment to authenticity will likely only be appreciated by me – and that needs to be enough.

3. The duelling Rhianna/Chris Brown interviews – didn’t watch either and don’t think this should take priority over other truly important things going on in the world. One saving grace is that it did give us a bit of a break over H1N1 hysteria stories.

En los últimos días, navegando por blogs y portales de música me he llevado una impresión traumática (espero que temporal) sobre el que todavía es y fue uno de los iconos más importantes del rock alternativo y del grunge en general; Chris Cornell (20 de julio de 1964, Seattle), el que fue líder de las desaparecidas Soundgarden y Audioslave. El caso es que Cornell se esta desviado en los últimos años del “leitmotiv” del rock alternativo: El poder y el hacer libremente música con el mínimo apoyo ni las exigencias de las grandes discográficas; para centrarse en una carrera en solitario cada vez más “resultona” con la que parece buscar el éxito inmediato entre los top de las listas de éxitos más comerciales, a base de sonar repetitivamente en las radiofórmulas.

Parece mentira que Chris Cornell haya llegado a ese punto, cuando fue el mismo el fundador de Soundgarden, una banda realmente creativa que elaboro junto a otras grupos como Nirvana, Pearl Jam o Alice in Chains el género grunge, la fusión entre el punk y el hard rock que triunfo en la década de los 90 con letras melancólicas. Su estilo era ese pero lo que le diferenciaba de las demás era la voz de Cornell. Una voz única y potente con la expresaba una gran energía entre los distintos y distorsionados ritmos que imprimían sus otros componentes: Kim Thayil (guitarra), Ben Sheperd (bajo) y Matt Cameron (batería); dejaba notaren suma su influencia en bandas precursoras como Black Sabbath o Led Zeppelin. Con estos mimbres Soundgarden alcanzó  (después de varios abandonos e incorporaciones durante la buena acogida de la crítica especializada de sus primeros discos: Ultramega OK y Louder than Love) el reconocimiento mundial con el disco Superunknow (1994), en el que se pueden destacar sencillos como Black Hole Sun, Spoonman o Shadows in the Sun, con letras que aluden a temas como el suicidio o la drogadicción. Todo y cuando tres años antes, la repentina fama del Nevermind Nirvana le  “había robado” a Soundgarden la debida atención simultanea de su segundo trabajo, Badmotorfinger.

Curiosamente, la mayor parte de todo ese éxito vino a la par acompañada por la simultanea colaboración de Chris Cornell en la elaboración eventual del grupo Temple of the Dog y su correspondiente y único disco del mismo nombre. Esta banda surge exclusivamente de la idea de los miembros de Mother Love Bone para rendir homenaje póstumo al que fue su cantante y también gran amigo del Cornell Andrew Wood.

Soundgarden y nuestro protagonista continuaron su carrera con el que fue su tercer y último disco Down On the Upside. Un éxito destacable, pero menor del esperado tras lo ocurrido con Superunknow; provocaron a partir de ese momento, un punto de inflexión en el que surgieron diferencias musicales entre sus componentes sobre cuál debía ser la línea de identificación de la banda. El propio Cornell como líder del grupo explica muy bien la causa de la final de la disolución consecuente de 1997: “Soundgarden era una democracia: Si uno estaba convencidísimo de que su idea era la que había que usar, los otros tres acababan haciendo caso. El problema es que en lo que se refiere a la expresión musical, a veces, el proceso de comunicación y votación y discusión, crea una situación en que ya es demasiado tarde”.

En 2001, Chris Cornell comenzaba una nueva etapa en su carrera como vocalista de grupos rockeros con la formación de Audioslave, que quedo compuesta con la unión de la mayoría de los antiguos miembros de Rage Against the Machine: El guitarrista Tom Morello, el bajo Tim Commeford y el batería Brad Wilk. La conocida banda Rage Against the Machine (en español, algo así como ”Ira en Contra de la Maquina”) se podría identificar coloquialmente dentro del género musical del rap metal (utiliza bases propias del metal en general para ir desarrollando sobre ellas las rimas características del rap); en este ámbito, deben en parte su reconocimiento a la manera en la que expresaban a través del contenido de sus letras una fuerte disonancia ideológica anti – sistema y contraria a las injusticias sociales. Con Audioslave esta característica desapareció de la mano de Cornell (esto no quiere decir que la banda no realizase simbólicamente actos ideológicos reivindicativos o benéficos; de hecho, en 2005 fue pionera en ser el primer grupo de música estadounidense en realizar un concierto en la Cuba de Fidel Castro). el nuevo grupo también va alternar en sus temas y álbumes particularidades propias del genero metal y grunge, con otras inspiradas en la faceta de las baladas rock, que Cornell estaba desarrollando paralelamente en su carrera en solitario; aun así, en todas sus canciones la actuación de Cornell sigue siendo propia, sobresaliente; y con el gran añadido de los casi imposibles riffs y solos que le hicieron popular en su anterior banda a Tom Morello, como uno de los guitarristas en activo más destacados del rock en general.

Con este estilo cercano a lo comercial, Audioslave fue recibido por la crítica y los fans como una fusión entre R.A.T.M y Soundgarden: en algunos casos positiva, como por ejemplo al llegar a los puestos más altos de las listas de ventas, con dos discos de platino (Audioslave, 2002 y Out of Exile, 2005) y uno de oro (Revelations, 2006); mientras que en otros negativa, sobre todo los críticos tachan al grupo de soso y repetitivo con unas letras con poco sentido. Aún así, sea como fuese  Chris Cornell terminó por abandonar Audioslave alegando otra vez ”conflictos personales y diferencias musicales” en 2007.

Cornell lo volvió hacer, dejó unos grupos que estaban en alza, para centrarse en su carrera en solitario que ya había combinado en tiempos de Soundgarden y que ahora retomaba de nuevo. En vedad, no se arrepiente de haber actuado de esa forma: “Estar en agrupaciones es algo que he disfrutado cada vez que lo he hecho, pero el tiempo invertido haciendo eso es tiempo perdido para hacer mis propios discos y experimentar con música de cualquier forma que sienta que me gusta”.  

En cualquier caso, los trabajos individuales de Chris Cornell han pasado desapercibidos en el panorama musical, en gran medida por abandonar por momentos el rock con esas ”experimentaciones” que están musicalmente (no a nivel vocal) tan fuera de lugar como sucede en el caso de la versión de Billie Jean o la de Ave María. El colmo de todo esto ha estado en la incorporación en su último trabajo Scream (2008) del rapero de Hip-Hop y R&B Timbaland, conocido también por producir y colaborar con Madonna y Nelly Furtado entre otros artistas de la escena Pop actual. Unos artistas, a los que tal vez les concuerde legítimamente mejor las bases repetitivas y canciones con escaso contenido para desarrollar con sus características musicales; que en el caso de Cornell no encajan, le hacen estar  dentro de la canción en un segundo plano en el que se desaprovecha esa capacidad vocal tan comentada anteriormente.

En un momento, Chris Cornell se mostro al público ilusionado con esta posibilidad que le ha dado el propio Timbaland para innovarse musicalmente: Es una experiencia increíblemente satisfactoria porque hay mucha diversidad musical en el escenario”. Pero poco a poco se está dando cuenta de las constantes críticas, sobre todo las de sus seguidores más veteranos, que le han hecho rehacer junto a  Jordon Zadorozny, (ex líder de Blinker the Star y productor de Courtney Love) una de esas últimas canciones, Never Far Away, cuyo resultado es realmente esperanzador; e incluso dejando abierta la posibilidad un futuro remake mas rockero del propio disco Scream.

Si ya lo dice el dicho:”Rectificar es de sabios“; a lo que añado… y más cuando has sido durante años un icono, un referente en aquello en lo que siempre has destacado.

For this bootleg Thursday I bring you “The Birdman Sessions”. In the spring of 2000 while in Miami at the studio of Sean “Birdman” Gould. As the story goes, Gould bumped into Eddie at a bar on South Beach and offered an open invitation to record. Eddie Vedder spent a drunken night in the studio with a few random musicians recording off-the-wall covers.

The session was dubbed “The Birdman Sessions”, and copies of the recordings were made for all of the participants. Copies of these tapes eventually leaked out amongst the Pearl Jam trading elite, and it stayed amongst those elite for quite a while.

What came out of the “Birdman Sessions” were covers of Tom Petty’s “American Girl”, Radiohead’s “Creep” & the Doors “Roadhouse Blues”. They aren’t the best of Eddie’s work, but they show that he has a firm grasp of both his fore-bearers & his contemporaries. The vocals are a little too high & the instruments are a little too low, but it still makes for interesting listening.

There are some odd answering machine messages that I’ll include as well. One where Eddie is apologizing for something & the other where he calls the “Birdman” from Spain. They almost sound like he drunk dialed Gould, but he’s very considerate & congenial & in a weird way sounds like Johnny Depp in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. It’s a nice little collection for any true Pearl Jam fan.

My absolute favorite song on the Bootleg is “Hunger Strike” though & truth be told I actually like it more than the original with Chris Cornell & not because he made a shitty album with Timbaland. It seems like the background voices aren’t fighting each other for control of the song like they do in the original. They just nicely compliment one another which is exactly the way it should be.

And today’s flashback video song was heard on shuffle a few days ago – Adamski featuring Seal with “Killer” from 1990 (before Seal’s first solo CD was released, and, of course, when he had hair).  Great pop ‘mad scientist’ video!

Before I go into this story, I just feel it needs to be noted that a fan on Chris Cornell’s website offered a similar suggestion to the idea below; he pointed out that two different versions of Shania Twain’s Up! a few years ago, and that a rock and R&B version of Scream could go over well. This guy was flamed pretty nicely for even suggesting that Scream had potential, so I hope whoever he is, wherever he is, he’s laughing right now. On to the story:

The story goes that someone close to Chris Cornell, whose third solo album Scream was either panned or ignored by the music world earlier this year, got his hands on the original masters from the Timbaland-produced album. Then, with a little help, Timbaland’s influence on one track was wiped away, and replaced with a little pseudo-Cornell magic. The result is being billed as “Chris Cornell, De-Timbaland-ized”. You can hear the new version of Scream highlight “Never Far Away” over at Antiquiet. Unsurprisingly, the people who liked or at least tolerated Scream are cool with this, while nearly all those  clamoring for a Soundgarden reunion (and probably never heard the original Scream record to begin with) are once again calling it bullshit. While it appears that this track is just a one-off (for now), the thought of Scream getting a second chance is pretty appealing (maybe cut out some of the goofy segues and let Cornell’s monster of a voice take charge more). But so help me if they mess with the harmonies and back vocals on “Take Me Alive” I will take someone out back behind the woodshed!

Eu tenho uma paixão nada secreta por versões de músicas. Acho interessante ver como outros artistas interpretam determinadas canções. Recentemente, inspirado pelo texto da minha amiga Thais Kuzman (no site Colherada Cultural) sobre regravações interessantes de artistas, resolvi explorar essas músicas que tanto me atraem.

Muitos artistas escolhem músicas bastante inusitadas para fazer covers e versões, o que acaba mostrando, também, as diferentes influências em suas carreiras. Por exemplo, é difícil imaginar uma banda que mistura Death Metal, Metalcore e Prog Metal (Between the Buried and Me) tocando covers como Counting Crows (Colorblind) e Blind Melon (Change). Nestes dois casos, a banda não “transformou” as músicas para se adequar ao estilo da banda. Mas, eles trouxeram uma nova interpretação às canções, mostrando toda a qualidade de seus músicos.

Com isso tudo dito, eu apresento algumas das versões de músicas que eu gosto. Já aviso que este é um post que deverá ter novas partes pois, ao começar a escrevê-lo, reparei que deixei muita coisa boa de fora! Então, vejam algumas das versões que recomendo:

Johnny Cash – Hurt
Versão original: Nine Inch Nails

Johnny Cash expõe suas dores em "Hurt", um dos últimos singles de sua carreira.

Esta canção foi uma das últimas gravações deste grande artista country, presente no último álbum que lançou em vida. Hurt, originalmente do Nine Inch Nails, ganha bastante força na voz de Cash. É curioso notar como a letra – que faz referências a dor, uso de drogas e à perda de pessoas queridas –, uma das mais fortes letra de Trent Reznor, se encaixa perfeitamente à vida de Cash. Dessa forma, o artista conseguiu interpretar a canção de uma forma muito pessoal, conseguindo até mesmo apropriar-se dela. Hurt também tem um vídeo-clipe, com tomadas de Cash tocando a música na casa em que viveu seus últimos 30 anos, além de imagens de arquivo de toda a vida do artista.

Trent Reznor tornou-se um grande fã da versão que Cash fez de sua música e, até mesmo, comentou que:

I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.

Punk Goes…

Uma fonte de ótimas versões é, sem dúvida alguma, a série Punk Goes…, da gravadora Fearless Records. Nesta série, bandas de gêneros ligados ao punk (em sua maioria pop-punk, post-hardcore e alternative rock) gravam músicas de artistas de algum tema específico. Duas das minhas versões favoritas se encontram no álbum Punk Goes 80’s.

Gatsbys American Dream – Just Like Heaven
Versão original: The Cure

Gatsbys American Dream escolheram a canção do The Cure para gravar na coletânea.

Quando eu vi pela primeira vez que o Gatsby’s gravaria Just Like Heaven, já tinha certeza que seria muito boa. Just Like Heaven é minha música favorita do The Cure e Gatsbys é uma das bandas mais interessantes que surgiu nos últimos anos. Essa combinação não tinha como dar errado.

A declaração de amor que Robert Smith escreveu para sua então namorada ganha ainda mais mistério e emoção com a bateria quebrada e as diversas camadas sonoras que a banda adicionou. A música original foi eleita commo uma das 50 melhores canções de amor de todos os tempos pela revista Entertainment Weekly e é uma das canções que mostra o lado alegre do cantor da banda.

Midtown – Your Love

Midtown é uma banda que sempre fez questão de mostrar sua grande influência de hard rock e rock clássico, entre suas canções pop-punks, buscando um diálogo entre os dois estilos. Para esta versão, o grupo procurou fazer o mesmo, mesclar seu estilo com um toque do pop-rock que marca a canção original, adaptando-a aos anos 2000.

A própria escolha da Your Love já é bastante interessante. The Outfield pode ser considerado um “one-hit-wonder”, pois dificilmente ouve-se falar de outra música da banda que não seja esta. Contudo, esta é uma canção com a cara dos anos 80, que esbarra um pouco no rock de arena que era extremamente popular na época. A letra fala sobre um homem que tem um caso enquanto sua namorada está de férias.

O mais interessante da versão do Midtown é que ela consegue ser fiel à versão original e ao som da banda. A introdução e o final da música, com teclado e bateria eletrônica dá um toque especial para este cover.

Talisman feat Jeff Scott Soto – Frozen
Versão original: Madonna

Frozen é considerada um marco na carreira de Madonna por diversos motivos. Primeiramente, a canção apresenta uma mudança radical para a cantora, com o uso de tons eletrônicos mais obscuros, arranjos de cordas e orquestrações com influência oriental e uma forma de cantar explorando tons antes desconhecidos da diva. A música também marca a transição da Material Girl para a Spiritual Woman.

A música ganha uma roupagem hard rock, na versão do Talisman. A banda explora o arranjo de orquestração da versão original por toda a canção e aplica sobre ela guitarras distorcidas e uma bateria com bastante força. A potente voz de Jeff Scott Soto surge então para coroar esta ótima versão.

A canção também tem uma versão bastante interessante interpretada pelo músico francês Pascal Obispo com a canadense Natasha Saint-Pier.

The Ataris – The Boys of Summer

Para muitos o nome Don Henley pode soar familiar, mas apenas isso. Ele é o baterista e vocalista do Eagles, que a partir de 1982 lançou uma carreira solo extremamente premiada. Seu maior hit solo é, sem dúvida, The Boys of Summer. Curiosamente, a versão do The Ataris também se tornou o single de maior sucesso da banda.

A música tem como sua principal temática a passagem dos anos. A transição da juventude, em direção ao que podemos chamar de “vida adulta” é marcada pela conservação de um relacionamento: “My Love for you Will still be strong, after the boys of Summer have gone”.

É interessante perceber como essa canção se encaixa na carreira do The Ataris e, também, no álbum So Long, Astoria (2003). O álbum apresenta uma banda amadurecendo, deixando um pouco para trás o pop-punk que trata sobre amor adolescente e diversão pura dos discos anteriores. A música-título So Long, Astoria (referência ao filme The Goonies, de 1985) mostra exatamente essa mudança, dizendo que a vida é tão boa quanto as memórias que fazemos dela (“life is/only/as good as the memories we make”) e mostrando uma vida de alegria.

Para mim, além de dar mais vida à música, The Ataris conseguiu fazer com que a canção tornasse “deles”, contextualizando dentro da carreira e do momento que a banda passava. O necessário para mostrar que uma grande canção pode ser eterna.

Chris Cornell – Billie Jean
Versão original: Michael Jackson

Chris Cornell dá nova vida ao clássico de Michael Jackson.

Outra versão que combina o grande artista com a grande música é a versão de Billie Jean de Chris Cornell. Ambos dispensam apresentação: uma das mais famosas canções de Michael Jackson, na voz do ex-vocalista do Soundgarden e do Audioslave.

A meu ver, Cornell deu uma identidade à canção, com sua voz única e um feel muito mais voltado ao blues. A música ganha muita emoção e força. A linha de baixo, que marca a versão original, é abandonada e a voz de Cornell dialoga com uma guitarra que me lembrou bastante a melancolia de Jimmy Page em Baby I’m Gonna Leave You.

Bluegrass Tribute

Recentemente, surgiram séries que fazem tributos “inusitados” a bandas de diversos estilos. String Quartets, Piano Versions e, um dos meus favoritos, Bluegrass tributes, são alguns deles. Deste último, dois em particular me chamaram bastante atenção: Strummin’ with the Devil: The Southern Side of Van Halen e Fade to Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribute to Metallica.

David Lee Roth with the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band – Jump
Versão original: Van Halen

Jump é uma música que dispensa qualquer tipo de introdução. Um clássico da década do hard rock da década de 80, a introdução de teclado é, provavelmente, um dos riffs mais lembrados de todos os tempos.

O resultado ficou muito bom. A qualidade é inquestionável e os vocais de David Lee Roth, combinados com um arranjo de primeira, fazem desta versão, no mínimo curiosa. O álbum também conta com uma ótima versão de Eruption, tocada no banjo, para deixar qualquer guitarrista de boca aberta.

Iron Horse – Fuel
Versão original: Metallica

Devo admitir que Fuel está longe de ser uma das minhas músicas preferidas do Metallica e o mesmo acontece no álbum Fade to Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribute to Metallica (que chegou a ganhar um volume 2). A escolha de Fuel para comentar se deu, especialmente, porque a música acaba crescendo com esta versão bluegrass.

A canção original é bastante agressiva, pesada e rápida. E, curiosamente, seu tempo encaixa-se perfeitamente no som do bluegrass. Destaque para o belo Jam que a banda faz no meio da música.

The Cardigans – Iron Man

A suave voz de Nina Persson traz nova dimensão a este clássico do heavy metal (DAVBAR Images, davbar.com)

A doce voz de Nina Persson cantando versos como “Planning his vengeance/That he will soon unfold/Now the time is here/For Iron Man to spread fear” soa até mesmo irônico. Transformar uma música sobre  um vilão vingativo, que é extremamente agressiva, em uma baladinha foi uma grande sacada do Cardigans.

O contraste entre a versão original e esta é tão grande que chega a parecer outra música. E isso que deixa tudo tão interessante. Para quem conheceu o Cardigans com seu grande sucesso, Lovefool, nunca imaginaria que eles poderiam ser influenciados por Black Sabbath. Ainda, o riff clássico de Iron Man, reconhecido a distância por qualquer roqueiro, ganha uma interpretação quase surf music nesta versão.

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole – Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World

Você com certeza já ouviu esta versão, em que o já falecido cantor Israel Kamakawiwo’ole interpreta estes dois clássicos da música mundial somente ao som de seu ukelele. Além de unir duas das mais belas canções escritas no século passado, a simplicidade do instrumental aliado à suave voz deste havaiano faz dela a trilha sonora perfeita para diversas situações.

A versão tornou-se um fenômeno cultural sem igual, sendo incorporada a diversos filmes como Encontro Marcado e Como se Fosse a Primeira Vez, e também programas de TV, como ER (Plantão Médico), Scrubs e Cold Case.

Seems the latest fashion is to combine your individual strengths to form one massive monolith of destruction.  Case in point: Them Crooked Vultures.  I, along with many rock fans, am salivating at the prospect of Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) on drums, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass, and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) on vocals/guitar. Their debut album comes out November 17th, and from the snippets posted online, should be a monster.

Their idea is not of course a new one in the world of rock.  The list of supergroups is long. Some examples: Cream, Temple of the Dog (witness the latest “reunion” of them live), Damn Yankees, Velvet Revolver, The Traveling Wilburys, Nelson (both Nelson brothers in the same band? I can’t live without your love and affection indeed. Plus, any group that includes a mystical Native American in their video is in my book super).

In the Random Ramblings universe, we believe this should move to all areas of life. Why should it be limited to just music? The Transformers were way ahead of their time with this.  The Constructicons should be in the Supergroup Hall of Fame. Who is better-Nelson or Devastator? Tough call.  But either way, we the fans win.

Coming of Age characters supergroup: Kevin Arnold (The Wonder Years),  Alex P. Keaton (Family Ties), Angela Chase (My So Called Life), Troy (Reality Bites), Charlie (The Perks of Being a Wallflower)

These characters represent all that is blissful, confusing, and overwhelming about growing up.  Alex P. Keaton gets the nod for his heartwrenching episode with Ellen (Billy Vera and the Beaters, anyone?), Angela for her blindness to Brian Krakow’s affection, Troy for his ability to feel he is owed a Snickers, and Charlie for his love of music. And Kevin Arnold-for every single thought he ever let us hear.

Saturday Night Live supergroup: Phil Hartman, Will Ferrell, Dana Carvey, Jack Handey, Chris Farley, Kevin Nealon, Mike Myers.

Two many awesome characters to list them all.  But here are some: Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, Harry Carey, the “Chopping Broccoli” singer, Gap girl (I’M STARVING), Mr. Subliminal, and Phillip the Hyper Hypo.  And Jack Handey-for every single thought he ever let us hear.

80’s action movie bad guys supergroup: Predator, Ivan Drago (Rocky IV), Master Control Program (Tron), Colonel Bella (Red Dawn), Killian (The Running Man)

Alone they are all able to be defeated. But with their forces combined, you would be shot with a laser while taking a devastating punch to the face, while being taunted by a massive electronic face, while being taken to Cuba, all televised on a futuristic game show. Or some variation on that.

Imaginary Rock Band Supergroup: Jimmy Chamberlain, drums; Chris Cornell, vocals; Paul McCartney, bass; Jeff Buckley; Jimmy Page

Two clarifications: yes Jeff Buckley is dead, but we’re dreaming here, so it’s ok.  Also, McCartney does kind of stick out like a sore thumb here, but imagine his inventive bass lines mix with the aggressive drumming of Chamberlain, the shrieking of Cornell, and the inventive guitar attack of Buckley and Page.  My head would explode.

Fast Food Supergroup: The Colonel, Wendy, Hamburglar, Captain D

Recipe for Awesome Pie: the biscuits from KFC, fries from Wendy’s, and the breading from Captain D’s fish (not sure what the Hamburglar’s role is in all this, but he could just stand around and giggle while you make it). Ok, that sounds disgusting.  But much like how I felt about Krystals back in the day when I could still stomach it: don’t look at it. Just eat it.

Det är ingen tvekan om vilka som är mina favoriter i årets Idol. Eddie blir bättre och bättre och verkar vara en riktigt hyvens kille; om jag inte visste att det kan vara känsligt för en kille att bli kallad söt så skulle jag göra det…
….Tove har varit bra från början och jag hoppas att hon kommer att vara med till slutet. En tjej som verkar ha charmen och utstrålningen som en personlig egenskap.
….Överhuvudtaget är det ett ganska starkt fält kvar nu tycker jag. Den enda som är helt fel är Rabih och trots att Erika har en “bra sångröst” faller den inte mig i smaken. Att Nicklas åkte ut tycker jag är helt OK, det enda som är synd är att han gjorde det när han framförde en så fantastisk låt!

Trent Reznor’s haunting ballad about drug addiction was seen in a new light when sung by country legend Johnny Cash. made even more haunting by Cash as it was released after his sad death. Reznor said this about the cover:
“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. Somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure ”

Nu-i nimic daca va este o nebuloasa identitatea lui. De aceea sunt aici, sa va ajut sa intelegeti. Cornel e el.

In toata splendoarea lui. Bineinteles, n-am fost atrasa de neuronii lui. Nici macar vocalizele lui induiosatoare. Chiar deloc. Acum, nu aruncati cu rosii in mine pentru ca  e clar ca fiecare fata are un Cornel al ei. Poate ca al vostru Cornel are nume mai fancy decat al meu, poate e mai inzestrat decat al meu, poate se spala mai des sau se penseaza mai cu spor ca al meu, dar eu sunt statornica in decizia mea de a-mi insufleti visele numai si numai cu variatii de Cornel. Tineretile turbulente i-au fost marcate de prezenta notabila pe scena grunge-ului si-au fost cele ce l-au pus acolo unde sa-l pot vedea si eu, cu tot cu inceputul de miopie. Acu, spre rusinea mea, n-as putea spune ca-s o mare cunoscatoare a operei sale. De fapt, in afara de Black Hole Sun, mi-e restul inca intunecat. Stiu, stiu, ar trebui sa crape pielea pe mine de ignoranta ce sunt, dar asta e. Am spus mai sus ca-s superficiala si umblu dupa interes. Asa ca ce-mi trebuie sa-i recunosc trilurile ? Problema e ca nu m-a lasat pana nu m-a facut sa mi se aplece tot vizualul pe care imi bazam dezvoltarea teoriei. Cornelus, el insule, priveste indurerat spre cine ? CINE ? Altu.  Sade frumos sprijinind un perete si jeleste pe alaltu de peste drum. Not all kids in LA are obnoxious, bratty turds with fast cars and nicer phones than me. More than 10,000 of them sleep on the streets, in abandoned buildings, and other creative places. Sometimes they sleep on my front stoop, which actually gets kind of annoying and once I had to call the cops but that’s neither here nor there.

Thank God for Slash and friends! Slash (…and friends) are putting on a show Nov. 22 at Avalon in Hollywood to benefit LAYN – Los Angeles Youth Network, a non-profit that provides shelter, food and counseling for the abused, neglected and abandoned. Tickets to LAYN Rocks are kinda pricey, but it’s sure to have some worthwhile moments. Plus, it’s charity, so quit using the “but we’re in a recession!” excuse and take a moment to give a shit. Last night a “cold” front moved through north Florida, leaving us with some fall-like weather this morning.  It was a brisk 55 degrees when I hit the pavement this morning, which is just about perfect running weather, if you ask me.

Today was a light 3 mile run before tomorrow’s 6 mile run.  I basically took it nice and easy, imagining this just to be the first half of a longer run.  My pace ended up being a 10:20 which is not bad, and I definitely still had a lot left in the tank by the time I was done.

Bom, que o Chris Cornell é excelente todo mundo já sabe, mas que essa música caiu perfeitamente bem na abertura do primeiro 007 da era Daniel Craig, nem todo mundo reparou.

Fora a excelente música, a animação ficou muito boa, vale a pena não só ouvir, mas também assistir!
