Timbaland ist mittlerweile aus der Hip Hop- und R’n’B-Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Nach drei bombastischen Solo-Alben meldet er sich nach zweijähriger Pause mit dem „Timbaland presents Shock Value 2“ (Release: 27.11.) zurück. Okay, das ist erstmals nichts wirklich Neues – Timbaland macht das was er am besten kann…feinste Musik – aber dass er jetzt anscheinend auch noch zu den Twilight-Infizierten gehört, hätte man wohl nie gedacht!

Bei den American Music Awards vor ein paar Tagen hat Timbaland seine neue Single „Morning after dark“ mit Nelly Furtado und Soshy präsentiert. Gerüchten zufolge sollen die zwei Twilight-Stars Robert Pattinson und Kristen Stewart im Musikvideo zu diesem Song zu sehen sein. Mal sehen – hier könnt ihr erst mal den neuen Tunes von Timbaland lauschen:

Für das „Shock Value 2“-Album hat sich Timbaland wieder tatkräftige Unterstützung geholt – Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, The Fray, Chris Daughtry, Chad Kroeger (Nickelback), Brandy, Drake und Keri Hilson – sollen die Feature-Gäste der neuen LP sein. Flipping through some videos put up on the Youtube this morning, what did my bleary eyes spy? Why Chris Daughtry – you know that rocker guy everyone yammers on about who ’should have won’ the 2006 season of American Idol instead of that gray haired guy – in a video from the Country Music Awards. The Country Music Award Show, you read that right ! I had completely forgotten the CMA’s were on this week since I don’t watch award shows, but there were apparently a few video worthy moments from the show put up on the Youtube.

I have to ask, is it not enough that Daughtry has received loads of attention for being one of the top selling artists on the Billboard charts, that he outsold Taylor Hicks (the guy who really won Idol that year) by like a gazillion copies on his first record out of the Idol chopping block? That I hear Daughtry every single day at some point on the radio on various channels and that he’s definitely one of the most tweet-friendliest celebrity artists hanging out almost daily on Twitter? No apparently not, as it seems from his performance last night on the CMA’s he quite likely looks perched to make a run at Country music as well. My question is, Daughtry, really is this your next direction? It is a nicely done song exhibiting versatility as an artist but is this a ‘new’ Daughtry or just a one night stand – with Vince Gill?

The other Youtube worthy moment came when Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley gave a poke at Kanye West, I’m sure you’ve seen it, if not, here it is:

“Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Kanye” I liked this video as it gives that down home sort of vibe. Like when I was a kiddo and the folks would subject me to the horrors of syndicated episodes of “Hee Haw”.

That’s about it for me regarding the Country music genre this morning. Wait almost forgot, I was speaking about that gray haired ol guy from Idol earlier, and well it seems he’s thinking along the C&W lines as well. Sadly it looks like Daughtry may beat him to the punch – again. You know Taylor Hicks is a bit tied up at the moment with riding up and down in that plastic ice cream cone in the travelling road show version of “Grease”.

If you don’t know anything about me, and your mind only has the capacity to retain one key point about my personality, I suggest you fill such a void with the understanding that I absolutely adore Lady Gaga. G is my B, yo.

So it’s no surprise that I’m biting at the bit waiting for her new album The Fame Monster to release. From the three songs that have leaked/released early already (“Alejandro,” “Dance in the Dark,” and her current single “Bad Romance”), this is going to be one very fun album, and much “deeper” and “darker” than her first.

But in the meantime, I’ve been collecting every conceivable remix of her hits that I can find. Along the way, I’ve also found some very entertaining parodies and covers. Today, we’re going to be checking out one of her biggest hits, “Poker Face.”

Let’s start with South Park. I’ll be the first to admit that the show hasn’t been what it used to be for a long time now, but occasionally, I chime in to a new episode and discover something absolutely amazing. And a few episodes ago, Cartman decided to rock it out to “Poker Face” on Rock Band.

Then we also had Seth MacFarlane (my not-so-secret celebrity crush) and Alex Borstein doing a Marlee Matlin-inspired rendition of “Poker Face” on an “Almost Live” comedy show that aired a week ago on Fox. (My favorite part is when Alex touches the piano mid-song.)

And who can forget Christopher Walken’s take? (This one is more of an acquired taste, really.)

And finally, although not funny, I was delightfully surprised to see Mr. Shaved Hotness, Chris Daughtry, doing an acoustic cover of the song! (If this is the first time you’ve heard an acoustic version of the song, you’ll quickly learn how beautiful this song is melodically.)

I do wonder though if anyone decided to tell Daughtry that “Poker Face” is about bisexuality (while I’m getting it on with you, baby, I’m really thinking about other girls, hence my poker face). So yeah… Changing the pronouns can’t save you, bud. (But it has given millions of gay men fodder for wet dreams.)

‘American Idol‘ runner-up Adam Lambert has the support of winner Kris Allen as he tries to survive his own lonely hearts club after breaking up with boyfriend Drake LaBry, reports E! Online. “He’s doing good,” explained Allen at the ‘People’s Choice Awards‘ nominations announcement. “He’s obviously not completely happy about it, but I think it was something that needed to happen.”

Post-’Idol’, the two competitors are still in contact. “We see each other every once in awhile, and we text all the time,” Allen said.

Both singing phenoms are releasing solo work. Allen has a self-titled album due for release on November 17th and Lambert’s ‘For Your Entertainment‘ comes out on November 23rd.

Allen, 24, defeated Lambert, 27, in the eighth season of ‘American Idol.’ The result was controversial as commentators constantly fawned over Lambert and he was widely considered the front runner. Almost 100 million votes were cast and Allen won by less than a million. When asked by Rolling Stone whether his sexual orientation affected the final vote, Lambert laughed and said “probably.”

The transition into a successful musical career can be difficult for ‘Idol’ contestants, but Allen has been seeking advice from some of the show’s most successful grads.

“David Cook has done his thing for a year, and he’s been very successful at it,” enthused Allen. “Chris Daughtry is obviously very, very successful with what he’s done. They’ve both stayed really grounded and really cool. I’ve talked to them a little bit,” he added.

When asked what was their best advice, Allen replied with one word. “Sleep,” he laughed. “That’s what they tell me-sleep when you can!” he exclaimed.

First Came Chris Daughtry, Quickly Followed By Weezer, MGMT, Eric Cartman, And Now, IMO, Topping Them All (Except Maybe Cartman’s Rendition, It’s A Tough Call) The One & Only Christopher Walken. What Do They All Have In Common? They’ve All Spoofed Lady Gaga’s Hit Single “Poker Face.”

So…What is it about Lady Gaga, and this song in particular, that lends is self to such memetic mimetics? There is something undeniably unique about The Lady & Her Music. Her Style, Performance, The Catchyness of the tune…all of which make for User Generated Recreations. But it’s rare, and a privilege, when other artists or media producers spoof one’s work. Even in jest, most blatant mockery subtly suggests some degree of respect and admiration. If Family Guy or South Park ever made fun of one of my creations, I’d take it as a compliment.

Marketers & Advertisers Strive To Impart These Qualities On Their Content. To Provide A Template On Which Consumers Can Build, a Body of Material Ripe For The Creative Masses To Restructure, Remix, Reinterpret, Re-contextualize…and spread.

So what is it that she (or her team of producers and publicists) does, to lend her brand to such virality?

My Good Friend Rachel Feigenbaum, A CUNY PhD Student, Has An Interesting Thought:

When a person hears it [Her Music] you can’t help but admit that it’s catchy and fun. But when you realize what the lyrics are, what you’re singing, it’s embarrassing that you actually enjoy something that sophomoric, so to cope we make fun. [It's a] Social Defense Mechanism. People find that humorous it’s why she’s successful. She’s crazy and out there, but its fun and funny. It’s being so ridiculous, that it’s entertaining. For Her, Tactful Talentlessness becomes true talent and she’s thus she brings  a new dimension, and with it success, to an otherwise superficial music career & by superficial I mean a lack of lyrical and musical depth.

When I asked My Friend & Colleague Jess Greco that same question, she responded:

Historically, pop culture is pop culture for a reason- it is constantly being referenced. She’s original, shes doing things that are slightly ridiculous, and thats what is getting her attention. And these are the things that often turn into the internet memes that we’re so obsessed with nowadays. And a big part of this are the the references, just like The Office and The JK wedding dance video. Why Other Artists & Producers? Maybe Because they want to be part of the phenomenon? I dont know. They want to play off someone else’s attention to get their own? But I  feel like that applies to any person, not just celebs.

Personally, I get excited when celebs reference other celebs. It compounds the impact on the consumer/viewer and makes them feel like they’re part of this inside joke.

Could it be that simple? Is this authentic originality engendering producer-to-producer parasitism? Or is this something much more a psychologically complex? Is her brand Built, from the top down, to be so well suited for spoofing and these cultural memes, arguably one of marketing’s holy grails?

The Irish ballad botherers are set to perform their new single Where We Are on Sunday’s results show and they’re worried their ‘new musical direction’ won’t go down well. Well, they say ‘their’ musical direction, but it’s actually someone else’s – the new song is a cover of a track by American Idol winner Chris Daughtry. And it’s still a ballad, even though they reckon they’re going more ‘rocky’.

Anyway, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan are “terrified” of being on Sunday’s results show, even though they’ve performed on the show more than any other act, not including Simon Cowell’s hair. Again, no shock there when they’re managed by X Factor judge Louis Walsh. Still, at the very least the lads should gain some confidence and consolation from the fact it would be hard to be worse that the previous two live special guests, Robbie Williams and Whitney Houston. And, of course, there’s always John and Edward to truly trump the Loife in the awfulness stakes….

Actually, we think we’d rather watch the terrible twins over Westlife any day. Still, we won’t be missing X Factor whatever. Roll on tomorrow!

It seems lately that everywhere you look artists are not giving, almost throwing their music at you for free. While we all know that illegal downloading is on rise and with money being tight worldwide, people are more conscious about what they so with their hard earned cash so using a FREE track from an album to promote a band is a good idea.. as long as its a decent song!!

But when ex American Idol contestant, Chris Daughtry, suggests on Twitter that you download the free new single from Green River Ordinance, its enough of a recommendation for a curious mind to seek it out.

‘Come On’ is the free download single from Texas based, Green River Ordinance who are signed to Virgin Records.

Describing the genre of the song, it’s probably Rock a la Nickelback with a dash of country. Its not a million miles away from Daughtry, or from David Cook who the band have been touring with. The vocals kick in at a nice tight three seconds. Its a mid to uptempo track and for a free download this is one of the better promotional tools I’ve seen.

I’ve listened to the track a few times now and it’s definitely a grower! It’s enough for me to want to check out their album ‘Out Of My Hands’.

Propaganda?  What gives?  Well, friends, I’m just laying a little groundwork before I warn you of the coming of American Idol Rewind:  Season 5.  American Idol finally gets several hours of TV time to give us their skewed/slanted/biased version of AI5. 

What are we likely to see?  My guess would be the Chris Daughtry Coronation.  They’ve been trying to give him the AI5 title since early in the fifth season.  They’ve put meganza-bucks out to get him before the public and promote his CD.  The only thing they haven’t been able to do is make him exciting. His recent concert reviews have been filled with words like dull, monotonous and boring.  The lack of excitement was a major turn off for me.  No grungey angst for this girl!

What are we not likely to see?  I doubt we see much more than a millisecond of Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks.  He is the thorn in the sides of the powers that be at American Idol.  He dared to go on their little show and kick ass.  He had the nerve to be genuine and charismatic and make people like him.  He had the gall to make people want to get up and dance and smile and have a good time. I guess he spoiled AI’s little Daughtry orgy.  For that, they will dog him the rest of his life.

I’m not really sure what to expect as far as the other season 5 contestants are concerned.  My guess is that they will get more respect than Taylor and less slobber than Daughtry.  Come to think of it, unless you are a Daughtry fan, it’s probably best to just skip this fairy tale.

Seems like it’s time for Season 5 on American Idol Rewind. Finally. I’m going on record saying I don’t really like this show since I can only view it on the TV Guide channel. I have a real problem watching a program while the viewing guide is scrolling below it. My attention span is short enough without any help, thanks.

It seems some members of the Soul Patrol are already in an uproar over The Wronging of Taylor, Redux. Of course they are viewing the Season 5 rewind from the fandom point of view. But, let’s look through the eyes of a corporation, namely the Evil Monster (FremantleMedia), the massive company that has such a huge impact on American culture, the megacorporation that can make or break an artist in a matter of seconds. Fremantle has a wildly popular show, one that makes them a lot of money. So, what does one do with great shows? Replay them, and not just for the fans viewing pleasure…. oh no. Replay them featuring the performers who have already made (you guessed it… ) MONEY, those artists who appeal to a mass audience. Artists like Daughtry, and even Pickler.

While Taylor Hicks was the winner of American Idol, Season Five, he is not the contestant who has made Fremantle the most money. Thus, he’s not going to be the one featured. Fremantle replays AI to remind people of these artists, so they’ll go out and spend … say it with me now everyone…  “MONEY!!”

Daughtry will launch a 36-date U.S. arena tour this fall to support the group’s new studio album, Leave This Town. The opening acts will be main support Theory Of A Deadman and opener Cavo. The upcoming tour will launch October 19 in Topeka, KS before ending the first leg of the tour December 20 in Evansville, IN.

The tour announcement happens while Leave This Town continues its impressive streak of success. The album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, has sold more than a half million copies in five weeks.. The album’s first single, “No Surprise,” tops No.1 on the Hot A/C chart this week. It is the band’s fourth #1 hit, a rare feat for any recording artist.

After finishing a sold out club tour this month, Chris Daughtry says the band is busy preparing for its upcoming arena tour. “We dreamed about how it would feel playing these songs to packed arenas, and we’re excited to get our chance,” Chris says. “We have a great show planned and can’t wait to hit the road to share it with our fans.”

Leave This Town is Daughtry’s first album to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 and its second consecutive No. 1 album, selling 269,299 copies sold in its first week of release.
