My friends Kevin Tor and Chris Sifflet made this video at my house. It’s a commercial from the 1970s. We all traveled back in time and I acted in it, and then we traveled forward in time and put it on YouTube. My kitchen also traveled backwards and forwards in time. It was on G4, which is about video games? And it was on in Canada! YESSSS! I have cousins in Canada. I hope they saw it!

Starring some dudes of whom I am fond. Written and directed by a dude of whom I am fond. Assistant directed by a lady of whom I am fond.

Gisterenavond nog eens voor een trip down memory lane gegaan door het bijwonen van de No Use For A Name show in Hof Ter Lo in Borgerhout. Optreden georganiseerd door Get A LiVe en Heartbreaktunes.

Lokale “helden” Flatcat mochten zorgen voor de opening, maar ik heb ze gemist. Jammerrrr…

Tourbuddies van NUFAN was de band Far From Finished. Mij volledig onbekend. Aan het begin van hun show dacht ik: “hmmm, wat houdt die zanger zijn blikje bier vreemd vast…”. Iets later zag ik de onvolgroeide rechterarm van de zanger. Hij leek mij nochtans te jong om van de thalidomide-generatie te zijn.

Muzikaal zat het wel in orde. Niks speciaal, iets wat vele andere bands ook doen. Een singalongke hier, een oi oi oike daar,… tja. Ze kregen het publiek af en toe toch mee, dus misschien ben ik gewoon oud aan het worden. De drummer moet wel wat beter opletten waar hij slaat. Het is op het vel van uw drum te doen, niet op de micro die er langs staat!

Dan No Use For A Name. Man, wat was ik vroeger fan van deze band. Vreemd genoeg is dat zowat een van de enige bands waar ik nooit enige merchandise van heb gekocht. Buiten de cd’s dan.

Op 1 april van dit jaar is hun 9de studio album uitgekomen met de titel: “The feel-good record of the year”, en na 2 mindere successen, wordt dit album naar voor geschoven als een terugkeer naar het geluid van “making friends” en andere succesplaten.

No Use For A Name braken omstreeks 1994 door tijdens de volle doorbraak van punkrockmuziek. Hun nummer “Soulmate” heeft enkele jaren later zelfs als eerste nummer van een band op het Fat Wreck label met MTV-rotatie, waarmee ze in grote mate hebben bijgedragen aan het succes en verdere doorbraak van het genre.

Chris Sifflet, gitarist van de Foo Fighters, is nog een tijdje gitarist geweest bij NUFAN en heeft meegewerkt aan het succesvolle “Making Friends” en is naar Foo Fighters vertrokken na de opnames van “More Betterness”.

Hun huidige bassist Matt Riddle is de originele bassist van Face To Face, die momenteel een reunietournee bezig zijn en te zien zullen zijn op Groezrock. Riddle zal dan niet aan de bas staan, aangezien hij in 1996 bij Face To Face is vertrokken na een ruzie met zanger Trever Keith. Ik begrijp Trever, ik vind Matt ook maar ne aap.

Good Charlotte komt trouwens ook naar Groezrock! Zou Paris er dan ook bij zijn? Als support voor haar “vriendje” Benji?

Terug naar NUFAN. Gisteren gingen ze voor de zekerheid en speelden ze vooral oude nummers. Hun vorige plaat “Keep Them Confused” kwam quasi niet aan bod, en van hun nieuwe plaat heb ik ook maar maximaal 2 nummers gehoord. Dus het optreden leek een beetje op een reunie. Nostalgie troef, alleen waren ze nu allemaal wat ouder. Maar de melodieën van Sly en consoorten blijven toch even sterk als ze altijd geweest zijn. Ze zijn dan ook de vaandeldragers van de melodische punkrock.

Goeie boel, maar pak Tony zijne hoed niet af, want dan wordt hij kwaad.

Bassist Matt bevestigde voor mij nog een keer zijn “aap-zijn” in de volgende situatie:

Crowdsurfer stoot de microfoonstandaard om van zanger Tony Sly. Roadie komt podium opgesneld om standaard terug op de pootjes te zetten, maar in de vlucht laat hij de microfoon verticaal staan. Dixit Matt: “HEY!? Do you get paid for this?!”. Ik zeg: arrogant.

Al bij al, goeie boel. Ik zal de nieuwe plaat wel eens beluisteren.
