If you were reading this blog back in the beginning of 2008, this will make more sense than if you weren’t. From January 2008 to April 2008, I posted a series of blogs titled, “How Great Is Our God.” The purpose of these was to look more in depth at the attributes of God. Obviously, there are so many, so I want to post another part in this title series. This part is going to look at the Sovereignty of God.

The sovereignty of God is the absolute authority, rule, and government of God in the whole of the reality that exists distinct from Himself. It respects His relation to other beings and to all other being and existence.

Sovereignty is founded upon the oneness or unity of God. Our responsibility to God is based on His oneness. When our Lord was asked the question, “What commandment is first of all?”, He answered, “The first is, Hear O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord”. (cf. Mark 12) The logic is simple and irresistible. God is sovereign in the realms of nature and grace and this sovereignty belongs to Him because He is one, without peer or rival.

The sovereignty of God is also founded upon the self-existence of God. Since God is one and there is none else besides Him, He does not owe His existence to any other. His existence is without beginning and eternal.

The sovereignty of God is founded upon the self-sufficiency of God. Not only is He self-existent but He is to Himself sufficient. He does not need any created existence to complete His perfection and blessedness. Created reality is not a necessity arising from His being but an effect resultant upon His sovereign will.

The sovereignty of God is also founded upon the fact of creation. The moment we admit the existence of anything apart from God’s will as the principle of its origin, in that moment we have denied the absoluteness of the divine authority and rule.

He is a God who works, not just some things, but all things after the counsel of His own will.

It is not merely that God has the power and right to govern all things but that He does so always and without exception. – John Piper

The sovereignty of God in salvation is in a unique way exemplified in God’s election of sinners to salvation. The sovereignty of God is exemplified in regeneration by the Spirit. The sovereignty of God is exhibited in the free grace to lost humanity.

He fulfils His righteous purpose through the unrighteous wills of wicked men. He holds the reins of universal government and not a sparrow falls to the ground without His knowledge and ordination.

In this let the believer take solace, for it is the secret place of the Most High and the shadow of the Almighty. It is the absolute sovereignty of the eternal God. It is the absolute sovereignty of none other than the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all. (1 Chr. 29:11)

Danyew is awesome.

Go check him out now. Search it on youtube. last.fm. Whatever.

The lyrics are so grippingly meaningful, and the music has the different sparkle to it, that just can’t be found everywhere.

But about the music, let me set it out like this:

Most of Chris Tomlin’s songs have that contemporary guitar sound, sometimes, like with “Jesus Messiah” or “God Almighty”, they’ve achieved a better orchestrative sound,

but still, it’s mostly like “How Great Is Our God” or “Holy is the Lord” sound, that acoustic guitar strum covered with other stuff.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Chris Tomlin. What I’m saying is the sound of the songs usually have a sound like this.

Same way, but in a perpendicular rock style, Sanctus Real has got this great lyrics and great songs and a sound that sometimes is different in a way, but mainly revolves around the same thing,

the rock sound.

And last example, Starfield, which has a lot of great songs, and great lyrics, but all the songs, have the same fullness sound. However, this is kind of a different sound, but all the songs

sound like this.

But, let’s shift to a different view.

The David Crowder*Band. Their sound I’m labeling as the crowdersound. Why? It’s so different. Their first album, Illuminate had a very similar Chris Tomlin-y sound throughout the album, but then their next album, A Collision (aka, the smash-breakthrough-blockbuster Christian album of the year 2005) was this combination of sounds of all sorts. From the slight-rock sound of “Here is Our King”, to the electronic-synthesizing sound of “Do Not Move”, to the bluegrass in “I Saw The Light” and the end of “Be Lifted/Hope Rising”, it was just an awesome jumble of different sounds all over. Then, they came out with Remedy, and this CD, unfortunatly wasn’t as favored as A Collision, this was a half-return to acoustic sound, with some pretty awesome electronic stuff in the middle. I liked Remedy, but a lot of older crowderfans didn’t. Then: Church Music. This was awesome. It was quite amazing too. It was this sewn together CD with this completely different sound throughout the album, with all of the songs blending into the next one, and all this awesome stuff.

This is different sound = defined = crowder*band

Then Danyew.

These guys got this awesome orchestrative piano electronic synthesizive sound I can’t get over. It’s just awesome.

Check them out.

Now.

One of the themes in contemporary Christian theology and worship is the theme of surrender. For an e

One of the themes in contemporary Christian theology and worship is the theme of surrender. For an example of this in Contemporary Christian Music, look at songs like Jeremy Riddle’s “Sweetly Broken” with the lines “Sweetly broken, holy surrender” in the chorus, or look to Chris Tomlin’s “Made to Worship” where the chorus sings “When you and I embrace surrender…we will see who we were meant to be.” But what is going on with this surrender language?

Well, first off, what does surrender mean? It means to give up; to note that the odds are so against you that the only path that keeps you alive is quitting the fight. In theological langauge, this would mean giving up fighting against God; seeing that God is going to be the one victorious whether you die in the process or not, and so laying down your arms and admitting defeat. The real question every Lutheran wants to ask is “Is this decision/Armenian theology?” Is this just another example of the language of a theology that declares “I have decided to follow Jesus?”

I would say that in order to answer this question we must first look at how one is saved and how one is condemned. As Lutherans we believe that Jesus Christ died for the whole world – for the sins of every single human being for all time – and that now he calls us only to believe that his work was done for us (John 3:16). Those who believe that Jesus died for us are saved but those who reject that Jesus’ work was for them are condemned. This is important because the only work or choice that we can make is the choice to reject Jesus’ work – that is, they fight against God’s saving grace. And in fact, we all are by nature sinful and fight against God. That’s why Paul says in Romans 5 that we were enemies of God. But by his grace in the Holy Spirit he has given us peace from the fight.

In fact this is exactly what Paul is talking about in Romans 5:1 when he says that we now have peace with God; it is an end to the warfare. But how was that war ended? It was ended by the death of Jesus Christ which puts us to death in the waters of Baptism in order to raise us again to new life. But in a great paradox, God won the war by dying. Now there is no way that he can lose the war. No matter how hard we fight against him, he has already won. Now rejecting his grace, fighting against God is a fight guaranteed to lose. So what other option do you have?

Furthermore, who really does the action in surrender? Yes the one surrendering is laying down arms, but what good does that do if the other combatant isn’t willing to cease the attack? Who surrenders to a force that is guaranteed to kill them? Rather, if you know that the attackers are going to kill you no matter what you are going to fight to the bitter end. Surrender says more about the combatant than the one doing the surrendering. It says that you have faith that the one to whom you are surrendering will be merciful. In theological aspects, this would mean that the first work of surrender is faith – the work of the Holy Spirit declaring to the person that God is merciful and will not condemn you for your war against him because of the life, death and resurrectionof Jesus Christ.

In this way, the language of surrender in contemporary Christian music and theology is less a statement of decision theology and more a statement of the realization of the peace that God offers – the amnesty he gives in the face of our warfare. It says that we are the ones who are still fighting against Christ and that when we stop fighting God gives us peace. In this light surrender is rightly understood as full Christology.

Alright, short and sweet…

We had a great week! To me, the band was super tight this week, which always makes things go a little more smoothly. It amazes me the talent God has blessed us with on our stage!

Alright, here was our setlist…

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (REM/DC Talk Version) – We started our new 2012 series, talking about the end times, the end of the world, so we figured this would be a great way to kick off the series. We took the original REM version and mixed it with the DC Talk version to create the Life Church version. Overall, I thought it went VERY well.

Drifter (DecembeRadio) – This is probably one of our churches FAVORITE songs. It had been a good while since we had done it, so everybody was really into it!

Jesus Saves (Tim Hughes) – We introduced this song this week, and for it to be the first time, I thought it went very well.

Glory To God Forever (Fee) – This song is quickly becoming a favorite of our church, I know I can’t get enough of it!

-Jason’s Message-

Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)/(Chris Tomlin) – I love the way we do this song. It’s similar to the Tomlin version, but we add our “Southern Rock” flair to it.

-Offering-

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (Same as above)

Well, that was our set. Tell me this…what song do you find yourself singing over and over again this week?

Um, where to start. Can I even remember what happened 2 weeks ago? Well, I know from an equipment and logistics standpoint, it was a nightmare. For miscellaneous reasons, we had a LOT to overcome in order to pull the service off. But, God is bigger than us and any equipment we can throw at Him, so of course…we were able to have a service with no problems!

From a music standpoint, we had more of a stripped down instrumentation. For various reasons, it ended up just being a 3 Piece Band. Me, Matt on Drums, and BJ on Bass. It actually went very well and was a nice change of pace.

So, here was our setlist…

Let God Arise (Chris Tomlin)

I arrived at the show two hours before the 7pm start time – and fans were already sitting on t

I arrived at the show two hours before the 7pm start time – and fans were already sitting on the sidewalk waiting for the doors to open. By 5:30pm people were waiting in their cars or lining up at the doors to get a good seat for the sold-out concert. Mini vans packed full of kids were dropped off at the corner, running to claim their tickets for the free show. The security guard had to make a waiting list for those who showed up without tickets. If will-call ticket holders did not show up by the time the doors opened, he began giving their seats away. Groups of people excitedly waited to hear their names called, hoping to be ushered in to the packed church sanctuary.

All of this excitement surrounded a night of worship led by Tenth Avenue North – the Gospel Music Association’s “Best New Artist” of 2009. Especially in South Jersey (where this show was held), where the band’s drummer, Jason Jamison is from, each show is promised to be over sold out. Youth groups from miles away anticipate the band’s return each year. Since they began forming nine years ago at Palm Beach Atlantic University, these guys have seen it all – from coffeehouses and local shows to packed out venues and festivals all across the country.

Jason and lead singer Mike Donehey met in college. In the years following they would add both Scott Sanders and Jeff Owen to the lineup. “When I got to college, for the first time in my whole life I began to encounter the presence of God like I had never had, and a lot of it was just through worshipping with people. I wasn’t good at the guitar, I wasn’t good at singing and I really felt insecure whenever I’d play around people,” shares Mike. “I’d just go and play with people and worship God and He’d just meet us. I wasn’t sure what it was supposed to look like, but I knew I wanted more. I wanted to keep playing if that’s what was happening. “And so keep playing they did. They went for years as an indie band, traveling to play small places like Delanco Camp– a summer camp where the kids can almost claim Tenth Ave as their own, due to the many concerts
they’ve had the pleasure of hosting and attending for many years.

After playing a show in West Palm Beach, FL, they were approached by Phil LaRue (of the sister/brother duo, LaRue). He offered to meet up with them in Nashville to look at labels. He introduced them to songwriter Jason Ingram, and he and Mike began to work together. “On the way out of town we met with label [Reunion Records/Provident] just because we were there, and that’s who we ended up going with in the long run,” Scott recalls.

Once they signed and began to be nationally distributed, they released Over and Underneath in May of 2008. The label debut also featured songs from their well-known previous independent albums. With three hit singles on the radio, Tenth Avenue North continues to become a household name in the Christian music scene. Their latest radio ad, “Hold My Heart,” has only helped their cause. “Me and a couple friends wrote the song and we were all going through some trying times,” says Mike. “The song hinges on the bridge – `There’s so many questions without answers, but your promises remain.’ So it’s kind of just dealing with the idea that we all have times that God doesn’t feel real. He feels a thousand miles away. And that’s when we have to cling to his promises and wait for him.”

Despite radio success and CD sales, I can personally attest to the band’s
extreme humbleness. Their music is their ministry, and they place great
importance on the fans. “We don’t play music to an empty room,” says James. “The songs you write and the songs you perform are hopefully impactful to people in their individual lives. It doesn’t stop with the music and on stage. It’s after the concert, hanging out and talking, spending as much time with kids, adults, whoever. Just talking about the Gospel and wrestling with it together. It’s more of a together walk. Hopefully that’s the way our mindset stays as opposed to feeling that you’re bothered by people. That’s why we do it.”

The band just finished the “Inside and In Between” tour, where they performed for over 7,000 fans across the country. Half of these shows were sold out. The tour boasted songs from their current collections, as well as raising anticipation for new ones. “We just finished recording a new album,” Mike
shared with me. “Who knows when it’s going to get released, but we’ll play one of the songs tonight. We’re really excited about it.” Curious as to the content of this new record, I asked if they would be able to give us a sneak peek and describe it. “Oh,” Jason shared. “It’s techno with screaming.”

Although it might not be screamo techno music, Tenth Ave.’s latest endeavor is sure to be a success. After all, they are the only band this year to successfully send two songs to the AC Monitored Top 10 Charts at the same time!

Along with being busy listening to their own music, they are also avid supporters of other musicians. And if Mike could pick who would next gain the title of GMA’s Best New Artist of the Year, he would gladly pass the torch to Audrey Assad, who opened each night of the tour. “She’s a friend of ours and she used to lead worship with us down in West Palm…She’s going to have a song on Chris Tomlin’s new Christmas record coming up.” (If you’re smart, you’ll look her up and see what Mike is talking about! www.audreyassad.com )

Today has been a day filled with creativeness. I have sewn my first homemade journal and made some “Happy Cards.” I even wrote in my personal journal.

Doing these things has relaxed me. It really felt good to do something for myself.

I believe I needed to feel uncomfortable in order for me to move on to the next step towards healing. Change is not always bad. I feel at peace this moment, and for this I am grateful for the Rock who anchors me to the Truth of my existence.

Sunday mornings spent at church provide some of the most uplifting moments of my week. I find myself

Sunday mornings spent at church provide some of the most uplifting moments of my week.

I find myself drawn closer to the Lord through worship music.

Music soothes my soul, while the words remind me of God’s grace and love for me.

This morning, we sang Chris Tomlin’s Indescribable.

The words, which I am posting below the video, describe how vast God’s love and presence is.

I have often spoken with people who don’t believe in God because they can’t see Him.

My response?

Have you ever seen the wind?

No, but you’ve felt its presence as it blows across your face, and you’ve seen its ripple affect as it floats across water. You’ve witnessed its power during hurricanes and tornadoes.

Such it is with God.

Though you may not see Him in the form of a person, He is present.

I am sure that God knew that we humans would doubt His existence, and so He makes Himself seen in nature.

It is His hand that paints the spots on each leopard, decorates the landscape with fall colors, and puts a song of praise in every creatures’ lungs.

That is why I am overcome with gratefulness when I hear this song…

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation’s revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
All exclaiming

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God

Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light
Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
None can fathom

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
You are amazing God

Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
Incomparable, unchangeable
You see the depths of my heart and You love me the same
You are amazing God
You are amazing God

Here are some more pictures from Louie Giglio’s Passion City Church. Now if Louie saw that previous statement, he’d say “it’s not Louie’s Church. It’s God’s Church. I did not start the Church, Jesus did that more than two thousand years ago.” But you know what I mean I’m sure, astute and discerning reader that you are. These pictures were taken from three separate gatherings in different venues. You can see some of my earlier pictures here. I have to say I absolutely love going to Passion City Church. It’s the highlight of my week. I can’t wait for each new gathering. Louie’s truly doing an amazing job, his passion for the local Church is unmistakable. In some ways I’m surprised he never started a Church earlier, it is so clear he is a pastor at heart.
