Fifth Element, The (1997)

I didn’t know much about this movie when I decided to watch it so my expectations were not that high. I thought it was going to be another one of those science fiction movies that deals with the apocalypse and so happens to take itself way too seriously. I couldn’t be anymore more wrong because “The Fifth Element,” written and directed by Luc Besson, was as funny and interesting as the vibrant colors that could be found in it throughout. Every 5,000 years, a strange power appears and tries to engulf life. It could be stopped by combining the powers of fire, water, wind, earth and the supposed “fifth element” for another five thousand years and the cycle continues. Bruce Willis stars as Korben Dallas, a taxi driver in futuristic New York who used to work for the military. He got sucked into the madness of intergalactic battle when Milla Jovovich–the fifth element, also known as the perfect being–literally dropped into his taxi. Their mission was to gather all the elements and save the planet from being obliterated into oblivion. Gary Oldman as the evil Zorg, Ian Holm as the priest, and Chris Tucker as the hilariously flamboyant DJ also star. I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to because its pace was quick; it didn’t dwell on the specifics on who’s who and what their intentions and motivations are. This film definitely reminded me of a hybrid between the “Star Wars” saga and the B movies of the 1950’s because it had that nice balance of imagination and humor. The only minor complaint I had was that sometimes it managed to distract itself from the story to make room for some of the more obvious funny moments. Tucker was the one who stole most of the scenes he was in because he was able to focus his manic personality into a character that had to be very enthusiastic about everything every time he was on his program. As for the visual and special effects, yes, they are sort of dated but I really didn’t care because I’m more concerned about the concept, how well a film builds on the story, and how it utilizes its characters. “The Fifth Element” is one of those movies that one can really enjoy if one doesn’t mind watching something over-the-top on a slow night.

On Fridays I’m always reminded of Chris Tucker’s famous “Friday” quote…
“It’s Friday, you ain’t got no job, and you ain’t got shit to do!”

A few weeks ago, it was revealed that Redman was interested in doing a sequel for his 2001 film, How High. Mike Epps appeared in the first film playing the role of “Baby Powder.” Early in his career, Epps made a name for himself playing in comedic roles.

Now that the wheels are turning and another How High movie is in the works, many want to know if Mike Epps would return to his roots. Like many actors before him, Epps is trying to branch out from comedy and into doing regular films. Doing a role like “Baby Powder” can lead to Epps being typecasted.

For years, Mike Epps has been known as a comedy actor. Some have been trying to dub Epps as the next Chris Tucker. When SOHH asked Mike Epps about his participation in this new film, he said that he would not be taking part. He did not mean to offend Method Man, or Redman, it is just that he wants to move on to bigger things.

More than anything, Mike Epps wants to begin doing serious movie roles. Epps truly wants respect in the film industry. He said that he is getting to that point in his life where he wants to do more mature roles. Currently, there are not any new films that feature Mike Epps.

Hoy la selección es un monográfico sobre el desaparecido Michael Jackson. “El rey del pop” nos dejó muchos videos en los que ponía una especial dedicación. Algunos eran pequeños cortometrajes, películas sintetizadas en 4 minutos, como el primero de esta serie, Liberian Girl. El último single de su álbum BAD se promocionó con una filmación en la que aparecen muchos amigos de Hollywood del cantante. la nómina es extensa: Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Carl Weathers, Dan Aykroyd, John Travolta, Steve Guttenberg….

Uno de los últimos que grabó fue You Rock My World en 2001.  Basado en una historia escrita por él mismo y por Paul Hunter, podemos ver en pantalla a actores de la talla de Marlon Brando, Mickey Rourke, Michael Madsen, Chris Tucker, Billy Drago y a la actriz y coreógrafa Kishaya Dudley, que interpreta a la chica que origina toda la trama.

En 1991 John Landis (Granujas a todo ritmo, El príncipe de Zamunda) dirigió un de los más famosos de Jacko, Black or White. Las “celebrities” que hacen acto de presencia son el niño de moda en aquella época por la saga Sólo en Casa, Macaulay Kulkin, en el papel de padres el bonachón Norm de la serie de TV Cheers (George Wendt) y Tess Harper, la modelo Tyra Banks y la artista musical y actriz Cree Summer. Como curiosidad decir que en la canción participa tocando la guitarra Slash de Guns & Roses, y que el riff suena parecido al Hurt So Good de John Cougar Mellencamp.

Perteneciente también al disco Dangerous, In The Closet se proyectó un año más tarde que Black or White. Como respuesta a las dudas sobre su orientación sexual, Michael escribió este “Dentro del armario” en el que hablaba de una relación oculta entre un hombre y una mujer. Para rodar la historia se acompañó de la modelo Naomi Campbell, que despliega sus movimientos más sensuales a lo largo del video. Aunque los coros de la canción se acreditaron a una “Mystery Girl” luego se supo que fueron obra de la princesa Estefanía de Mónaco.

Without a doubt, Thriller, was the best work that Michael Jackson ever created. There is no way that he could ever top that album on a creative level. But, commercially, he could have knocked the socks off of his 1982 album.

By 2001, nineteen years after Thriller, Michael Jackson was now looked at as an “old school” artist. It had been six years since his last album, so the younger generation knew nothing about him. Always a step ahead of the curve, Michael was ready to re-introduce himself to the game.

Coming into the late 1990s and 2001, when he released Invincible, black music was centered around hip hop. Because of that, Michael Jackson teamed up with many hip hop producers and featured upcoming rappers on the album. His 2001 release was easily his second-best album, better than Off The Wall.

Chris Tucker was probably the most popular comedian/actor after the success of Rush Hour 2. One notable scene from the film was Tucker re-enacting Michael Jackson’s trademark dance. After the film, Jackson called Tucker, saying two words “wrong leg.” What came next was a strong friendship. Tucker performed the intro of Invincible’s lead single, “You Rock My World.”

The song received little promotion from Sony, but still managed to become a top five single. For the album, Michael Jackson had big plans of releasing such songs as “Unbreakable,” featuring The Notorious B.I.G., “Break of Dawn,” “Whatever Happens,” and “Threatened” as singles.

All of those songs were great and deserved to be singles. “Unbreakable” was arguably the best song on the album. The video for that single would have been simply incredible. Although “Break of Dawn” was a slow song, the instrumental of the song also set the stage for a creative video featuring Jackson and some video honey.

Had the album received the necessary attention and Jackson’s label had pushed those singles, things would have been entirely different. “Whatever Happens” would have shot to number one on all of the charts. One could only imagine the type of dancing that Michael would have done in the video. “Threatened” would have turned the “new generation” into true hardcore MJ fans because the song was a 2000s version of “Thriller.”

Had Sony been thinking, they would have pushed “Threatened” as the next single, after “You Rock My World.” With no promotion, Invincible was able to go double platinum. On top of all of that, only one single received notable airplay. Imagine if Sony had pushed these singles, gave them proper videos, and promoted the album.

With the robust economy in 2001, the new generation of music fans, and the nostalgic Michael Jackson fans, the sales of Invincible would have easily trumped that of Thriller. Michael Jackson would have broken his own record and he may have been able to have performed that world tour that was set for this summer.

Maybe if Sony had done right by Michael Jackson with this album, he would have been at ease letting that album be “It.” Had that been the case, he would hold the record for the top two selling albums of all time. Michael would have finally broken his record, topping Thriller and he could have finally been satisfied. Had this happened, maybe America would not have received such sad news on June 25, 2009.

There are few things that I love more than satire — the more biting, the better. And few things are more capable of being mocked than network television. Network execs are playing to particular tastes, and the expectations of the audiences are narrow.

Therefore, satirical skewerings of television, when done well, make me giggle like a little girl in a tickle fight. A few years ago, satirical newspaper/website The Onion had a feature of made-up television shows on established TV networks, with titles that could easily pass for respective television shows on said network. Because I miss them so much, I’ll occasionally make one of my own:

These sorts of things amuse me, and I want to share them with y’all. Also, I’m easily amused.

Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Chris Tucker: three of the most talented actors and directors of our time who’ve given us some of the funniest shows and films in recent years. To name just a few:

Also shown in the photo is the legendary Ronald E Grant, Recording Artist/Music Producer of tracks for artists such as Mariah Carey and Biggie Smalls.

The list of films, television shows and movies produced by or starred in by Townsend, Tucker or Wayans is far too extensive for me to list in a blog.  But in the gloomy night of well-made but tragic films like Menace II Society and Boyz In The Hood, these men helped to usher in a new sunrise of humor that we hadn’t seen since the days of comedic legends Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby. They brought us a ’smarter’ kind of humor with movies that made us think about how black culture was being portrayed on the large and small screens. And both Townsend and Wayans in particular subtly pointed out the important difference of being laughed with and being laughed at when it comes to black comedy.

In addition to breathing fresh air into black comedy, Wayans is also largely responsible for launching the careers of stars such as Jim Carrey and Jennifer Lopez.  Had there been no “In Living Color” there would have been no “Fly Girls” or “Fire Marshall Bill.” One can argue that the extraordinary talent of Carrey, Lopez, Daman Wayans and many others from the “In Living Color” ensemble would have been discovered eventually but I argue just as strongly that each of their ‘big breaks’ came light years faster because of the show.

There are so, so many men and women who belong on this list — Hudlin Brothers, Kasi Lemmons, Bill Duke –I can’t even begin to list the great actors and producers who are responsible for shaping my and many more generations of theatrical fun, so I just decided to start with three.

Gary Oldman es un maestro, Milla Jovovich sale buenísima, Bruce Willis es el mas duro, a Chris Tucker te dan ganas de ahorcarlo y todo eso mezclado con una pizca de futuro (en realidad futuro a gusto) y una historia de ciencia ficción (con elegido y todo) y con toques de comedia.
Puede que tome tiempo acostumbrarse al humor de la película, pero es entretenimiento puro y sin desperdicios.

Las estrellas de Hollywood no son siempre tan rutilantes como estamos acostumbrados a verlas. Drogas, posesión de armas, conducción temeraria, escándalo público, hurto, prostitución, maltratos o elevado índice de alcohol en sangre son algunas de las lindezas que han provocado que rostros muy famosos acabaran siendo detenidos.

Son tantos y tantas los que han acabado esposados que ha sido necesario realizar una pequeña selección, a menudo condicionada por la falta de testimonio gráfico del arresto en cuestión. De ahí que Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ray Liotta, Sean Penn , Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Sylvester Stallone o Roman Polanski, entre muchos otros, se hayan librado de aparecer en esta lista negra.

Tiene derecho a guardar en silencio…

AIDAN QUINN

Quinn fue arrestado por conducir borracho. Dos años después se le declaró culpable, tuvo que pagar 500 dólares de multa y se le retiró el carnet durante tres meses.

AL PACINO

En 1961 y con 21 años Al Pacino fue detenido por estar en posesión de una pistola del calibre 38 y cargada. Parece ser que Pacino pasó tres días en el calabozo y que los cargos fueron retirados posteriormente.

BRAD RENFRO

Tres fueron las veces que el joven Renfro pasó por la comisaría antes de morir en 2008 a los 25 años de edad.

En 1998 fue detenido y acusado por posesión de cocaína y marihuana, en 2000 por intentar robar un yate totalmente drogado y en 2006 cuando quiso comprar heroína a una policía vestido de paisano.

CARMEN ELECTRA

La explosiva Carmen Electra fue detenida en 1999 tras agredir a su ex marido el jugador de la NBA Dennis Rodman.

CHRISTIAN SLATER

Christian Slater también posee un amplio currículum de detenciones. La foto que os mostramos es de diciembre de 1994 cuando fue arrestado en el aeropuerto JFK de Nueva York por tenencia ilícita de armas.

CHRIS KLEIN

Klein, al que pudimos ver en “American Pie” (1999), “American Pie 2″ (2001), “Cuando éramos soldados” (2002) o “El mundo de Leland” (2004), fue detenido en 2005 por conducir borracho. Parece ser que su tasa de alcohol en sangre duplicaba la permitida en el estado de California, lo que le supuso una multa de 1.800 dólares y la obligación de realizar 150 horas de trabajo comunitario.

CHRIS TUCKER

Chris Tucker que interpretó al histérico y excesivo Ruby Rhod de “El quinto elemento” (Luc Besson, 1997)  fue arrestado por exceso de velocidad con el agravante de que no se detuvo ante el aviso de los agentes de policía.

DANIEL BALDWIN

La carrera delictiva de Daniel Baldwin (hermano de Alec) es más prolífica que la cinematográfica. En 1998 fue arrestado por posesión de cocaína tras haberse paseado desnudo por los pasillos del Hotel Plaza de Nueva York. Después de acumular varios arrestos, fue nuevamente detenido en 2006 acusado de haber robado un coche. Aunque posteriormente se demostró que era el vehículo de un amigo, el actor no se libró de pagar una fianza de 20.000 dólares por haber tomado prestado el dichoso coche sin permiso de su colega.

DAVID BOWIE

El cantante y actor David Bowie fue arrestado en 1976 por posesión de marihuana. El “Duque Blanco” se encontraba en un hotel en compañía del también cantante Iggy Pop.

DENNIS HOPPER

En 1975 Hopper sufrió un accidente a consecuencia de su conducción temeraria. Posteriormente fue detenido por no informar a las autoridades de dicho accidente, por huir del lugar de los hechos y por resistencia a la autoridad.

DUDLEY MOORE

Dudley Moore (“10, la mujer perfecta”, “Arthur, el soltero de oro”) fue arrestado en 1994 por violencia de género, aunque su novia, Nicole Richardson, retiró posteriormente los cargos.

EDWARD FURLONG

El John Connor de “Terminator 2″ (1991) y el Danny Vinyard de “American History X” (1998) ha sido otro de esos jóvenes actores que han terminado coqueteando con el alcohol y las drogas. En 2001, Furlong pisó la comisaría en dos ocasiones: una por conducir borracho y otra por hacerlo sin el permiso reglamentario. Este año 2009 su mujer, la actriz Rachel Kneeland, lo ha acusado de agresión y amenazas.

ERIC ROBERTS

Eric Roberts (hermano de Julia) también fue un habitual “visitante” de las comisarías. En 1987 fue arrestado por posesión de cocaína y marihuana y por resistirse a la autoridad. La violencia de género fue el otro delito por el que se le detuvo en 1995.

FATTY ARBUCKLE

La estrella de cine mudo Fatty Arbuckle fue detenido en 1921 como presunto autor de la muerte de la actriz Virginia Rappe. Tras una fiesta en un hotel a la que la joven estaba invitada, comenzó a sentirse mal y murió tres días después de una peritonitis. Una amiga de Rappe y la prensa sensacionalista de la época acusaron falsamente a Arbuckle de ser el causante del fallecimiento por haber violado a la joven con una botella. Aunque fue absuelto, su carrera cinematográfica quedó totalmente arruinada.

FRANK SINATRA

El arresto de Frank Sinatra no deja ser de lo más curioso. Corría el año 1938 y se le detuvo por (parece ser) haber mantenido una relación con una mujer casada. Cómo cambian los tiempos…

GARY DOURDAN

El famoso Warrick Brown de la serie televisiva “C.S.I.” fue detenido cuando pernoctaba en su coche y en el cual se encontró heroína, cocaína, éxtasis y varios tipos de fármacos. Tras pagar una fianza de 5.000 dólares, Dourdan fue puesto en libertad acusado de posesión de narcóticos. El careto de su ficha policial lo dice todo.

GUS VAN SANT

En 2006 el director estadounidense Gus van Sant sufrió un arresto por conducir borracho.

HALEY JOEL OSMENT

El niño que en ocasiones veía muertos a punto estuvo de convertirse en uno de ellos siendo ya mayorcito. Tras estrellar el coche que conducía cerca de su casa, los policías que acudieron al lugar del accidente comprobaron que Osment no sólo iba borracho, sino que hallaron que estaba en posesión de marihuana. En estos momentos es imposible no acordarse de aquel visionario e hilarante vídeo de los de “El informal”.

HEATHER LOCKLEAR

La Sammy Jo de “Dinastía” y la Amanda de “Melrose Place” fue arrestada en 2008 por conducir borracha y con alguna que otra sustancia más en su cuerpo. Aunque se difundió que todo había sido una trampa de una ex empleada de la actriz, el asunto nunca llegó a aclararse. Qué pena que Heather no tuviera tiempo de ir a la peluquería antes de que la fotografiaran para rellenar su ficha policial.

HUGH GRANT

En 1995 Grant fue detenido acusado de conducta indecente (=una prostituta estaba realizándole una felación) y el 2007 volvió a una comisaría de policía por agredir a un paparazzi.

JASON PATRICK

Ir drogado y atacar a uno de los agentes que le detuvieron le supuso un grave problema a Patrick que siempre declaró su inocencia y demandó al susodicho policía. Aunque la oficina del fiscal retiró los cargos, el jurado federal falló a favor del agente.

JEAN FONDA

La reivindicativa Jane Fonda fue arrestada en 1970 en el Aeropuerto Internacional Hopkins de Cleveland. No sólo golpeó a uno de los oficiales de la aduana, sino que en su equipaje se encontraron píldoras de vitaminas y Valium por lo que se le imputó un cargo de tráfico de drogas. Lo absurdo de la acusación se resolvió con un sobreseimiento de los cargos cuando se demostró que esas sustancias eran completamente legales.

JEFFREY DONOVAN

Lo visteis junto a Angelina Jolie en “El intercambio” (Clint Eastwood, 2008) encarnando al Capitán J.J. Jones. El 12 de julio de este año se le detuvo en Miami Beach por conducir borracho y por negarse a realizar la prueba de alcoholemia. Tras pagar 1.000 dólares de fianza, Donovan fue puesto en libertad.

JENNIFER LÓPEZ

La actriz y cantante Jennifer López fue arrestada en 1999  junto a su novio Sean “Puffy” Combs después verse involucrada en un tiroteo en un club nocturno de Manhattan. Tras pasar 14 horas detenida, fue puesta en libertad sin cargos.

JOSH BROLIN

Mientras rodaba la película “W” (2008) de Oliver Stone, Brolin (junto con otros miembros del equipo) acabó con sus huesos en prisión después de haber participado en una pelea en un bar. Tras pagar una fianza de 334 dólares fue puesto en libertad.

JOSHUA JACKSON

Joshua Jackson, que saltó a la fama tras su participación en la serie televisiva ”Dawson crece”, acabó en comisaría en 2002 por soltarle unos cuantos guantazos a un segurata en un partido de hockey.

JULIETTE LEWIS

En comparación con sus otros colegas de profesión, lo de Lewis es una simple anécdota: fue detenida por hallarse en un club nocturno para mayores de edad cuando la actriz sólo tenía 16 años.

KEANU REEVES

En 1993 el futuro Neo de la trilogía “Matrix” fue arrestado por conducir borracho. Reeves tenía 29 años.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND

Kiefer Sutherland, el agente Bauer de la serie televisiva “24”, pasó 48 horas en el calabozo por conducir con unas copichuelas de más lo que le llevó a realizar un cambio de sentido prohibido (estos yanquis fliparían con los vídeos de la DGT). Fue en 2007

LINDSAY LOHAN

La díscola actriz ha sufrido dos arrestos en 2009. En mayo se la detuvo por conducir borracha (estrelló su deportivo contra un seto) y decidió ingresar en una clínica de desintoxicación de la que salió el 5 de octubre pasado. Tres días después Lohan volvía a ser detenida por conducir, nuevamente, bajo los efectos del alcohol y por encontrarse restos de cocaína en su bolsillo. Por más que la amiguísima de Paris Hilton ha declarado que la droga no era suya, ha tenido que desembolsar 30.000 dólares de fianza y deberá comparecer ante el juez.

MACAULAY CULKIN

Uno de esos niños prodigio que no ha sabido crecer en condiciones. En 2004 Culkin fue arrestado por posesión de drogas y quedó en libertad tras pagar una fianza de 6.000 dólares. Atención a su cara de empanado.

MARTIN SHEEN

Parece ser que Martin Sheen, activista declarado, ha sido detenido más de 60 veces por participar en manifestaciones (no autorizadas) de distinta índole. Como no tenemos espacio para incluir 60 fotos, ahí os dejamos éstas dos como muestra.

MATT DILLON

El actor fue detenido en 2008 por exceso de velocidad. No deja de ser paradójico que Dillon fuese nominado al Globo de oro y al Oscar al Mejor Actor Secundario por la película “Crash” (Paul Haggis, 2005)…

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY

En 1999 McConaughey decidió darse unos bailoteos por su barrio completamente desnudo. Al parecer el actor había fumado marihuana (hecho que no pudo ser demostrado, aunque su careto en la foto casi no deja lugar a dudas) y se le arrestó. Tras pagar una fianza de 1.000 dólares, fue puesto en libertad.

MEL GIBSON

El actor-director se ganó una sonora detención (segunda) en 2006 por conducir borracho por una autopista de Malibú. Durante su arresto se comportó de forma violenta e insultante (“los judíos son los responsables de todas las guerras en el mundo”). Después de desembolsar los 5.000 dólares de la fianza y quedar en libertad, Gibson comenzó a recibir ayuda de Alcohólicos Anónimos.

MICHELLE RODRÍGUEZ

Michelle Rodríguez, actriz de la serie televisiva “Perdidos” ha sido arrestada en dos ocasiones. En 2003 se la detuvo por conducir borracha y con el permiso caducado y en 2005, nuevamente, por coger el coche con una copas de más. En esta última detención iba acompañada de Cynthia Watros, otras de las actrices que participan en la serie citada anteriormente.

MICKEY ROURKE

Mickey Rourke ha visitado en dos ocasiones la trena. En 1994 se le detuvo por agredir a la también actriz Carré Otis (su esposa en esos momentos) y en 2007 por conducir su moto en estado de embriaguez.

NICK NOLTE

En 2008 fue arrestado por conducir bajo los efectos del alcohol cuando transitaba por una calle de Malibú. Sobran los comentarios observando el aspecto que presenta Nolte en la foto.

O. J. SIMPSON

Lo de este tío clama al cielo… Después de librarse de la cárcel (que no de pagar una indemnización de 33,5 millones de dólares por daños y perjuicios) tras los asesinatos, en 1994, de su ex mujer Nicole Brown Simpson y el amigo de ésta Ronald Goldman, Simpson fue detenido por el presunto robo de una colección de objetos deportivos en un casino de Las Vegas. Al colega se le acusaba, entre otras lindezas, de robo con arma de fuego, asalto con arma de fuego, conspiración para cometer un hurto y hurto con un arma de fuego.

RANDY QUAID

¿Recordáis a aquel aviador borracho que se convierte en un héroe en los minutos finales de la película ”Independence Day” (1996)? Pues se trata del actor estadounidense Randy Quaid, hemano del también actor Dennis Quaid.

Randy y su esposa Evi fueron detenidos el pasado mes de septiembre de 2009 acusados de estafa por no haber pagado la cuenta de un hotel de Santa Barbara que ascendía a 10.000 dólares. Después de  abonar la fianza, fueron puestos en libertad.

RIP TORN

¿Que quién es este tío con esta pinta tan horrible? Para que os situéis rápidamente Rip Torn es el actor que interpretó a Z en la película “Men in Black” (1997) y en su secuela “Men in Black 2″ (2002). Aquí el amigo fue detenido en 2004 por conducir borracho y volvió a pasar por la comisaría en 2006 tras protagonizar un accidente con su automóvil. RYAN O’NEAL

Durante una investigación que tenía como objetivo a Redmond O’Neal (hijo de Ryan y Farrah Fawcett), la policía registró la casa del actor encontrando metanfetamina. Ambos fueron arrestados por posesión de drogas.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR.

Desde finales de la década de los 80, el actor sucumbió a las drogas y al alcohol. Ya en 1980 asistió por primera vez a un centro de rehabilitación que abandonó al poco tiempo sin obtener ningún resultado.

En 1996 fue arrestado en Los Ángeles por exceso de velocidad; por posesión de marihuana, cocaína, heroína y crack; y por encontrársele una pistola descargada. Fue puesto en libertad condicional tras pagar una fianza, pero antes de ser citado a juicio por esos cargos, fue nuevamente detenido, al entrar por error en casa de su vecina. Había consumido tanto alcohol y droga, que necesitó de asistencia sanitaria para recobrar el conocimiento.

Fue enviado a un centro de rehabilitación mientras estaba a la espera de juicio, pero tan solo cuatro días después, fue detenido por los agentes de seguridad del lugar unas horas después de fugarse.

En 2000 fue arrestado nuevamente por fumar crack y beber alcohol y en 2001 por vagar por las calles bajo los efectos de varios narcóticos.

Parece ser que desde 2002 Downey Jr. ha logrado mantenerse “limpio” y alejado de las cárceles.

RUSSELL CROWE

El actor australiano no se caracteriza precisamente por su paciencia. En 2005 fue arrestado en un hotel de Nueva York después de lanzarle un teléfono a un conserje. Parece ser que Crowe se puso nervioso porque no podía comunicarse con su mujer en Australia.

SAM SHEPARD

El actor (“París, Texas”; “Magnolias de acero”; “El informe pelícano”; ”Black Hawk derribado”; entre otras) y dramaturgo fue detenido por conducir borracho y por exceso de velocidad. Shepard fue puesto en libertad tras pagar una multa de 600 dólares y las costas del juicio y prometer que no volvería a reincidir.

SHIA LaBEOUF

LaBeouf fue detenido por conducir borracho después de chocar contra otro vehículo. A causa de este accidente se retrasó el rodaje de “Transformers 2” (2009).

STEVE McQUEEN

El inolvidable actor de “Los siete magníficos” (1960), “La gran evasión” (1963), “Bullitt” (1968), “La huida” (1972), “Papillon” (1973) o “El coloso en llamas” (1974)  fue detenido en 1972 por conducir ebrio. No se puede negar que a Steve se le ve la mar de “contento”…

TIM ALLEN

Antes de iniciar su carrera cinematográfica, Tim Allen fue arrestado en 1978 en el aeropuerto de Kalamazoo (Michigan) acusado de vender de drogas y en 1979 por posesión. Volvió a ser detenido en 1997 por conducir borracho y por exceso de velocidad.

VINCE VAUGHN

En 2001 Vaughn fue arrestado por participar en una pelea multitudinaria a la salida de un bar.

WESLEY SNIPES

En 2006 Wesley Snipes fue detenido en el aeropuesto de Orlando por evasión de impuestos. Parece ser que el actor le debía al fisco unos míseros 12 millones de dólares…

WINONA RYDER

La cleptómana actriz también ha caído en las redes de la policía por robar en unos grandes almacenes. En la foto podemos observar a Winona durante el juicio en la que fue procesada.

WOODY HARRELSON

En 1982 el actor fue arrestado por desorden público. Parece ser que a Harrelson le dio por pegarse unos bailoteos en medio de la calle entorpeciendo el tráfico. No sólo se resistió a la detención, sino que incluso se escapó del coche de policía que le trasladaba a la comisaría.

YASMINE BLEETH

La actriz Yasmine Bleeth, conocida por participar en la serie televisiva ”Los Vigilantes de la Playa”, fue detenida en 2001 por posesión de cocaína. Tras declararse culpable, se la sentenció a dos años de libertad condicional y a 100 horas de servicios comunitarios.

ZSA ZSA GABOR

En 1989 la actriz fue detenida no sólo por conducir su coche con el carnet de conducir caducado, sino por soltarle una bofetada al agente que le había dado el alto. Curiosamente la Gabor también pasó por la comisaría cuando en Palma de Mallorca se marchó de un local sin pagar la cuenta.

Continuemos con nuestro viaje fantástico sobre la ciencia ficción de hace algunas semanas, que os recuerdo, concluyó con la presentación en el final de la década de los 80 de dos robots tan dispares como exitosos: Robocop (“ejem”) y el gran Terminator.

La década de los 90 significó el renacer de los efectos especiales de gran calidad y el bombazo de las empresas dedicadas a ellos, lo que supuso la gran comercialidad y espectacularidad de algunos de los filmes que se generaron.

A pesar de que pequeñas joyas nada comerciales se colaron en nuestros cines, como el caso de Gattaca (1997), un thriller sobre la manipulación genética sin apenas efectos que tristemente no despertó mucho fervor en taquilla pero que debería ser repasado por los amantes del género y resituarla en el lugar que se merece, las mas recordadas de esta década son aquellas que generaron mas “dinerito” en taquilla. Tal es el caso de Jurassic Park (1993), buena adaptación de la novela de Michael Crichton, mucho más técnica que la propia película, y que generó otras dos secuelas de “más de lo mismo” absolutamente olvidables; o la irrisoria “americanada” (pero con la que un servidor se lo pasó genial) llamada Independence Day (1998), que supuso la confirmación del estrellato de un tal Will Smith.

Mención especial en esta época merecen dos películas, tan taquilleras como diferentes.

Tener como protagonista a Bruce Willis por aquel entonces significaba un éxito casi seguro, pero si además se incluye una belleza como Milla Jovovich y se añade un personaje absolutamente tronchante interpretado por un tal Chris Tucker (lástima que luego nos diéramos cuenta que a todos sus personajes los interpretaba igual) dieron como resultado en la cabeza de Luc Besson una película tan comercial como simple, pero francamente entretenida y cargada de imaginación que fue El quinto elemento, que arrasó en las taquillas de todo el mundo.

La otra era mucho más compleja, con una trama de realidad virtual, guerra humano-máquinas y unos efectos especiales espectaculares e innovadores que surgió de la retorcida mente de unos hermanos llamados Wachowski. The Matrix (1999), con Keanu Reeves a la cabeza, hizo que todo el planeta reconsiderase la posibilidad de estar viviendo una existencia que no era la “real” y, sobre todo, intentar emular  el efecto “bullet time” con el que Neo evitaba las balas de los agentes de Matrix. Ni lo uno ni lo otro acabó bien, je je. Desgraciadamente, la película no tenía un final cerrado y eso degeneró en otras dos películas que, personalmente, acabaron por hundir hasta el subsuelo el gran efecto que generó la primera.

La entrada en el siglo XXI ha supuesto la consolidación de los efectos especiales como esencia obligada para que una película de ciencia ficción triunfe en taquilla, pero también el nacimiento de un abanico inacabable de posibilidades para el género: desde la fantasía maravillosa de Tolkien hecha imagen por Peter Jackson en su trilogía de El señor de los anillos (gracias, gracias, gracias), hasta la explotación con irregulares consecuencias de los superhéroes Marvel y DC, pasando por los intentos de Spielberg de hacer historia con Minority Report o Inteligencia Artificial, tan fallidos como vacíos. También se ha demostrado la falta de ideas que sigue viviendo Hollywood empeñado en el renacer de éxitos pasados: Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers… aunque su buen resultado en taquilla parece darles la razón.

Y luego, por fin, llegamos a esas pequeñas joyas que siguen haciendo del cine de ciencia ficción un género que sorprende y atrapa, sin tanta necesidad de que los efectos sean los protagonistas, si no basados en una buena historia que contar, y además, bien contada. Aquí entrarían maravillas como la misma Wall-E (vale, sí, es una película por ordenador, es un efecto toda ella, pero es tan increíble que merece una mención especial), Distrito 9, que daba pie a este viaje, y la reciente ganadora del Festival de Sitges, Moon.

Como se ve, el género sigue vivo y creando expectación y controversia, regalándonos grandes joyas en forma de pequeños filmes o grandes truños en forma de grandes superproducciones… Y este año aún nos falta el Avatar de Cameron… ¿en qué lugar la situaremos? La respuesta,  el  18 de diciembre en los cines de todo el mundo.

Rapper Kanye West seeks refuge in India 

So apparently Mr. West is planning on going to a Hindu ashram in Pondicherry, India. I guess he feels that a  little yoga should do him some good to release all the negative energy he’s built up. I mean does he need to go into hiding for a bit? Yeah I think so but personally all he really needs to do is sit in a corner and keep his mouth closed for a week straight. Ha! I mean don’t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoy Kanye’s music but he does tend to be an asshole and part of me is like “yeah man!” cause I tend to be one myself but even I have a line that’s drawn. But for somebody like Kanye he’s crossed and  redrawn many lines. The real question is will he REALLY change? Or will he quote a few buddhists proverbs, do a few yoga tricks, and maybe even produce a bollywood movie before he eventually comes back to the U.S. and crash a few more stages or make outrageous comments on award shows and mixtapes? Who knows! But I can honestly say I can’t wait to see what happens! Namaste Mr. West….Namaste…

First Let me say… bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha……. This has got to be THE FUNNIEST THING i have seen all day ALL WEEK!.. If this is real and some one let another person  record them getting the crap smacked out of them. They need to be smacked AGAIN!… This looks partially simulated but with the percentage that it could actually be real is even more hilarious. Oh, and the Chris Tucker at the end with the famous Friday line is classic.

Mr. Miller,

Trucking is so easy! Eddie was telling me about all these rules that truckers have to follow like you can’t drive for more than 14 hours. Pssh, that’s it? My friends and I have played Halo for WAY longer than that. Just give me a couple cans of Mountain Dew and I could be the greatest truck driver in the world! Sure, I haven’t done any driving per se, but I’ve watched Eddie long enough to know the basics: Press your feet down, jiggle the Slammy-Rod till you go fast, and look like the most miserable man on earth (Eddie does this step perfectly). I’m sure that I’ll be a natural in no time.

Last night we checked into a hotel in Witchita, Kansas and we couldn’t find any good arcades so Eddie decided that we were going to stay in and watch Roadgames, which is some movie about trucking. Is this the only thing that Eddie thinks about? I mean, it’s great that he loves his career and all but why doesn’t he relax with something a bit more light-hearted? Maybe a flick whose main theme is the power of friendship between two heterosexual males. Rush Hour is the first film that comes to mind.

The only two things that kept me from throwing a full-fledged temper tantrum were the mom from Freaky Friday being in it and the very vague hint of this being a light-hearted buddy flick. I mean, there were two people who spent a decent amount of time together and some of the time they were smiling but THAT’S IT! BOOOORIIIIIING.

Eddie and I are a good team, Mr. Miller, don’t get me wrong. We just come from two different worlds so it’s tough for us to see eye-to-eye. I’m Jackie Chan and he’s the blue collar, wise-crackin’ Chris Tucker type. In the end all of our trials and tribulations will bring us closer until we become BEST FRIENDS!

That’s why I’m taking us on a detour.

Do you remember the movie, Rush Hour, with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan? The funniest line in that movie is when Chris Tucker looked at Jackie Chan and said ”DO YOU HEAR THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH?”  That line is timeless. In fact, I’ve wanted to ask a couple of people that question in the last few days. And unless they were deaf, their answer would be “YES!”

Hearing and listening are two different things. When you hear something, it can go in one ear and out the other. But listening requires thought. Listening is a full body experience involving your ears and eyes, heart and soul often times causing you to read between the lines.

If you’re in professional sales or people seek you out as a sounding board, chances are you’re a pretty good listener. These are some tactics that I use to improve my ability to listen.

1. Pay attention to what they say (verbals)
2. Pay attention to what they don’t say (non-verbals).
3. Decipher what they really mean.
4. Make eye contact.
5. Put yourself in their shoes. 
6. Use phrases like “I understand how you feel”
7. Keep an open mind.
8. Let go of stereotypes and preconceived notions. 
9. Respect what they have to say.
10. Offer an alternate point of view.
11. Paint a picture for them of the way you see things.
12. Overlap with some things they’ve already told you.

When listening, my goal is to keep the lines of communication open. So I try to avoid anything that will makes people shut down. Here is a short list of things I stay away from:

• Cutting across a person while they’re talking.
• Rushing them when they are trying to think about what to say.
• Unwelcoming facial expressions.
• Starting my point of view with “but”.

Above all, I avoid responding in anger to an angry person. Anger is just a surface emotion. And the point of listening is to decipher what lies beneath the surface.

This movie is nonstop!  If it was releasing tomorrow, I would tell the whole world to go see it.  Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich CLASSIC!.  The scenes with the opera is WINNAZ!  We liked it so much we searched all over just for that particular cut… Check it out!…. Milla is *DROOOOOOLZ!*

Your life will never be as bad as this movie.  And you can be happy about that.  Unfortunately, your life will never be as awesome as this movie.  Which sucks, but it’s reality.  Neither do you have the tragedy of living near or having to talk with Larry the Cable Guy.  Nor, on the other hand, can you be as good looking as Bruce Willis or Milla Jovovich while living a life of fantasy in the near non-existent future where aliens exist (and apparently look like armadillos) and Chris Tucker is…Chris Tucker. I’m not sure where I was going with that.  I could have gone a lot of places with that.  None of them would have been good places, though.  Regardless…

Anyways, to get to the point.  I constantly compare my life to the movies I watch.  I lament the fact that my life will never (A) be as interesting or (B) successful as The Lives of Others, and sometimes  wish Danny Kaye would Court Jester his way into my world just once.   Ever since moving to Philadelphia, and probably because I ride my bicycle everywhere (primarily because  I’m too cheap to buy a car, and in no way does my concern for the environment dictate my decision but it is nice that it is a benefit) with my iPod headphones in, I have had the insane hope that one, as I am riding home from work, two rival gangs will bust out into choreographed dance/fighting a la West Side Story, or maybe even a little basketball choreography…whatever gets the youth off the streets these days.  By the way, I did not know that movie won 10 Oscars.  Since Return of the King, Ben Hur, and Titanic are the big 11 Oscar winners they seem to get all the attention, but 10 Oscars is a darn impressive feat.  And until rewatching that YouTube clip, had never noticed that Bernardo wore Converse All-Stars.  That’s just classy.  Or maybe everyone wore Converse All-Stars in the ’60s and I’m just a little young to know or understand.  Either way, classy.  I stand by my opinion.

(Ever since writing this, I’m going to start pushing the theater department at our school to do West Side Story as the spring musical.  This year they decided to do The Wiz.  I’m ambivalent.  The Wiz is apparently done every year at one of the middle schools in Philadelphia.  I have a feeling it’s overdone in urban areas.  Personal opinion.  Although I have to give the theater department props for doing The Outsiders and moving the play from the middle of nowhere middle America in the ’60s to New York City in the late ’80s.  They’re good.)

I am constantly wishing the movies I watch pop up in my own life.  In case you hadn’t clued in yet, this is the MOVIES AS ESCAPISM philosophy.  This is what I believe.  This is why I particularly hate watching documentaries.  I don’t like the world enough as it is, do I have to watch it all over again when I get home?  (NOTE:  This movie is a rare exception to the documentary rule.  Moving on…)  Watching Hoop Dreams was painful.  Crumb?  Just unnecessary.

This is why I’m not convinced by District 9.  It’s a little to preoccupied with NOT allowing the audience member to hopefully ignore the fact that it is really about apartheid to allow the audience member to watch the movie without thinking.  I like movies that make you think.  I don’t like movies that do the thinking for you.  This is also why (but for a slightly different reason) I will never like the National Treasure movies.  The National Treasure movies, unlike District 9, just tell you the answer.  District 9, instead, hammers the obvious into you with a mallet.  Neither is very comfortable or easy to watch.

Clarification: Watching movies about the harsh realities of life is OK.  I don’t know why, but it is.  Watching Year of the Quiet Sun was much nicer than any factual movie I have watched about Europe post World War II.  It isn’t a happy movie.  It isn’t an altogether kind movie.  But because I know it is fiction, maybe it is easier for me to stomach and accept, because I know it isn’t reality.   The movie doesn’t have to be harsh to be hated.  It just has to be real.  Movies, to me, weren’t made to show the world.  They were meant to, at the most, mirror the world, echo the world, re-represent the world, meant to capture our shadows on the cave, not to show our true faces.

This brings be to the review of the article (a personal favorite): Sunshine (I’ll get to Solaris another day.)

I know this is really late.  I know this is two years late.  I’m going to start actually writing about modern and relevant movies when work allows me the time to go out to the movie theater and see relevant movies.  Until then, I’ll review old favorites.

This movie I think is quite wonderful.  I think it is quite wonderful because it was probably a movie made precisely for me.  Ebert got it right when he said the movie was made for nerds. But, it’s more than a movie for nerds.  It’s a classic movie in that it devotes nothing new to the entire subgenre of movies where a crew of people go into outer space, get on each other’s nerves, and grapple with the fact that they’re on a suicide mission all while trying to be both psychological and vaguely sexy.  It doesn’t add anything new because the genre exists solely for B-grade movies.  (The exception is Solaris almost exclusively.  I don’t like Alien or Aliens.  I’ll explain that one later too, I promise.)  I’m pretty sure this movie does not try to be anything more than the best it knows it can be–a B-grade movie.  This is why Ebert will give it a 3/4.   Because that’s all it should deserve.

Fortunately, it is more than that.  It is part Science Fiction, part horror, part drama, part diatribe.  It’s like an all style and no substance movie with a little bit a substance.  Not much, but just enough to be entertaining.  I won’t bother with the plot because the plot doesn’t really matter very much.   You’ve seen it before.  Until a certain moment in the film.  Then it switches genre with one fail swoop and moves into another type of movie you’ve also seen before.  It’s interesting to manage and understand the switch.  It’s not that interesting.  But it is interesting.  What’s more interesting are the visuals, which will always win me over storyline, although the storyline isn’t terrible.  It’s a joy to watch, the visuals will win any viewer over.

This, I admit is my major downfall as a moviewatcher.  Oftentimes I’m willing to allow my obsession with great visuals overtake my practical sense of plot, pacing, and acting, none of which is lacking in Sunshine.  Did I mention this is one of my favorite films.  I’m not sure why I’m trying to make it sound so bad.  It’s not.  It’s actually really good.  Give it a chance.  Put it on your Netflix queue.  I doubt you’ll be sorry.
