Please do stop by FredMcKinnon.com for more setlists and sermon recaps from around the world…

Morning
=========

Come now is the time to worship (Brian Doerkson)
Alles vir my (Afrikaans) (Retief Burger)
Dula le rona (Sotho) (Paul Mpete)
Desert song (Brooke Fraser)
Give us clean hands (Chris Tomlin)
All who are thirsty (Brenton Brown/Glenn Robertson)
How deep the father’s love for us (Stuart Townend)

Firstly let me start by saying how much I love the fact that I live in a country with 11 official language…and how much I love going to a church that realises that and attempts to worship in different languages!

Ronel led worship this morning – was cool having the evening guys leading in the morning service…well, i thought it was cool. Morning service crowd has quite a different vibe from the evening service crowd so it’s very cool for me whenever we do stuff in the morning or when the morning service people visit the evening service.

Speaking of different people doing stuff together, Chris (the pastor) spoke on the church of Acts (chapter 2) in his series of church being community. He talked on unity in diversity…so basically people who are different coming together as one. The term used in the old testament for the trinity is also the term used in the whole the man shall leave his mother and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one…how cool is that. As the church that is the picture we are supposed to present…different people from different backrounds/ethinicities/tribes/tongues/etc coming together to praise and worship him in our togetherness…living together, sharing together, praying together, showing the world real unity/peace/love…

The vineyard church is very big on the theme of “everyone gets to play”…basically, we have pastors and leaders and etc but everyone is gifted in some way and everyone has a role to play in the church…the pastor has his part and each congregant has their part…if one person doesn’t do his part, we all hurt as the church.

Chris also touched on the church of acts vs the church in Paul’s letters. He talked about how the church in Acts was how it was the intended model (Acts 2: 42ff) and the church in Paul’s letters was the remedial model…the one that God allows because we live in a falled world and get things wrong and etc…and there’s a place for both…but sometimes we get so comfortable and dependent on the remedy that we can’t get back to normal…let’s leave the remedy and get back to health…to realising that church is not the building…we are the church…we are all part of the priesthood…we all have a part to play.

Evening
========

For the evening service we had planned to go to the beach and have a jam sesion picnic there but the wind forced us to change our plans. We ended up going to play bingo at a local pub/bar/place and then after that we went to Brett and Val’s place and had game night with crumpets…and lots and lots of laughs…

Love my church family!

Estaría bien no tardar mucho en mandarlas, el tope es el día 3 de Diciembre, se acabó el procastinar después de esa fecha.
Today is my two year anniversary on Australian soil. Woo hoo…let the bands play and the trumpe

Today is my two year anniversary on Australian soil. Woo hoo…let the bands play and the trumpets roar. Pop those champagne corks – let the festivities begin.

Nope, they’re will be nothing like that today.

It’s no special day. Today, I’m dealing with everyday life issues, still trying to really connect with life here so that it feels like home. Some days it does, others I feel like a complete outsider and I long for a time when I felt wholly connected. On the plus side, I get to experience fabulous weather, I’ve made some great new friends, we have just purchased a lovely home and my love for Chris is stronger and deeper now than it was two years ago (and at that point I never thought that could be possible). On the challenging side, I’m still adjusting to the nuances of Aussie culture, trying diligently to make substantial career inroads, missing my family, friends and familiar haunts and then there’s the constant juggling act trying to acknowledge the needs and sometimes conflicting priorities of a blended family that includes teenagers and the reality of old lives meeting new ones. No simple task I can tell you.

I look back over the past two years and can recall moments of fascination, exhilaration, validation, elation, serendipity, contentment, trauma, heartache, disappointment and frustration. I can see why my very wise friend Bill said, “promise me that you’ll give it at least two years.”

Is it what I expected? To be honest, I’m not sure what it was that I expected (or if I ever really thought the decision through). I think I may have had a rather romanticized view of what my great adventure down under might entail, but that’s okay. Maybe it’s what gave me the courage to do it.

What I can say with great surety is that it has been both more rewarding and far harder than I had ever imagined.

We’ll see what the next two years has in store for me. Whatever comes, you can bet I’ll continue to blog the milestones as they happen – all of it – the great, the good, the bad and the ugly. So stay tuned…and for those of you who have been with me for the ride so far, thanks for your support and interest, you’re a big reason I continue this blog.

Ya saben que los mods para los juegos de PC están a la orden del día y el de Resident Evil 5 es uno de los que, mmm… más llama la atención.

Regularly, when I am walking my dogs I get commented on by strangers how they have me stretched out. The strangers who say that are right because these dogs know how to make a walk that should be easy, into something that is a disaster for me. They probably get the enjoyment of sniffing or trying to chase birds, and that’s all that matters, a good time for my pups. I’m just glad these two are small, and if they were even a little bit stronger, I’d probably put my hands in the air and say FORGET IT. It sure gets frustrating when one wants to take his pretty little time to sniff one spot, and the other wants to chase every bird she sees. So whenever I get a chance to have extra sets of hands on our walks, I get excited as if I’ve won keno. Or maybe even more.

Hey everybody! Here’s an update about what’s going on in my life these days. I have the house to myself all weekend, and it’s pretty lonely I guess. Chris, Eric, and Jennifer went home last night – they were all here for two months, so it’s weird to have them gone. Megan, Shelley, and Kate are travelling in Huaraz, in the mountains. Ginene is volunteering in Cusco. Hyo is a girl who has been staying with us for about three weeks (not volunteering), and she’s visiting Santiago, Chile until Wednesday. So here I am, all alone in the big house. (That means I get to play music loud!)

I am coming home for Christmas! Hopefully I’ll be able to see all my friends and family, but my mom is quickly calling dibs on when she wants me around! Hopefully I’ll be able to make it up to Kingston as well.

Also, I’ve been working hard on grad school applications the past few weeks. I want to go into urban planning, and I’m hoping that if I get in my application early then I’ll have a better shot. If anyone has any grad school tips I would love to hear them!

I’ve been house hunting for the past several weeks as well, and found a very small number of houses that were appropriate. After submitting my findings to my boss, they’ve decided that unless I can find something this upcoming week, we’re going to talk our landlady into letting us stay for a while longer. Kind of an anti-climactic finish to my expeditions, but oh well. Other than the cockroaches this place is pretty good!

So that’s my life at the moment; it’s kinda boring. I would love to do something like go out to the movies but there’s nothing available! Anyone curious as to what is showing? 2012 (on 3 screens), A Christmas Carol (on 2 screens, both dubbed), Whiteout, “El Delphin” (a Peruvian movie), “Coco Avant Chanel” (a French movie, subtitled in Spanish), Planet 51 (on 2 screens, both dubbed), New in Town, Inglorious Basterds, “Le Silence de Lorna” (French), and Twilight – New Moon (on 4 screens)

This is a painting of a rusty bolt. Overall I am happy how it worked out. It is about 9 x 12 on hot press. The thing I am working on is to keep the washes really light and build up the values slowly in this manner. One trick that Rey Milici told me about is to alternate the layers of wash with cool and warm, rather than just repeating washes with the same colors. The background is alternated with washes of cad red/indigo and aliz crimson/indigo. I also mixed different grays depending on whether they were in the light or not. So the grays in the sun were warm gray – cad red/cad yellow/ultramarine, and the grays in the shade were cool grays mixed with aliz crim/lemon yellow/ultramarine. I probably will touch it up a little bit here and there, but it is pretty much finished. I alternated warm cool layers on the dark shadow as well. It makes it look a little more interesting than just using a flat black or gray wash.

I also photographed this in the sun (thanks to a suggestion from Leslie of Lesliepaints) so the colors are a little better, plus I was able to use a higher shutter speed so its not so blurry.

Below is the drawing for this painting. This is my new process. I had a photo I took of the bolt and I use a transparency with a grid on it that I tape over the drawing. Then I make the drawing based on that. Once I have the drawing I put a bunch of graphite on the back of the drawing and then trace the parts of the drawing I want on to the watercolor paper. The graphite on the back is transfered where I draw. I like this method because I can mark up the original drawing with notes like what colors I mixed or what the different values I am shooting for are.

Well, after 4 fun-filled days of shopping for everything carefully packed in luggage somewhere between Minot, ND and NYC, Chris’ mom flew home today… sans bag. Yep. Never found it. Wait, that might not be true. They may very well have found it. But since WE HAVEN’T HEARD A WORD FROM THEM IN FOUR DAYS, we’ll never know, will we.

Lost baggage? Understandable. It’s air travel. It happens. But to have such a poor communications system in place that not a proactive email, phone call or letter has come to Donna’s attention from the airline? Utterly ridiculous. Four days later, she’ll be filling out a claim form at her home airport without so much as a word frrom NWA or Delta. Now THAT is customer service and an attention to detail that makes me just want to fly with them every day.

And the irony? I continually get emails and letters from NWA and Delta as an elite status traveler reminding me how much more powerful they are since the merger, how many more cities are available to me, how many more flights are available to me, how much more they have to offer combined. Well, the only thing I really need from them is a clear channel of communicaiton and some respect, and it seems neither of those were drafted into the merger.

I have just started this project for my art foundation called Archiving and Collections. Now, i have in some kind of arty way (otherwise known as bullshitted) my way through and now i’m looking at journeys, so like maps ect, iv gone on walks taking photos and stuff like that.

I have been looking at Robert Rauschenberg recently and i have been reading about typography and i have decided to make some posters as part of my final piece for this module.

Here is my starting point for posters, i got to this by looking at the maps and simplifying the way the roads join and link. I did this onto different colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) and then decided to layer them to add colour and to make it look more interesting.

Mine and Chris’ families, to be exact.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to my family’s actual Thanksgiving supper due to some poor planning on my part, and a lot of traffic–but these are some highlights from a visit with a very small portion my family visiting from Colorado the day before Thanksgiving. I never get to see them, so it was really nice.

This photo is just awkward enough that I feel it deserves to be posted. These are two of my cousins. Jessey was not down to be an active participant in the picture-taking process, but my mom managed to get her in the background. I also like how mine and Madeleine’s feet are cut off. It adds a little… je ne sais quoi.

Mother and daughter. Tobia, my cousin Michael’s wife, and Madeleine.

This is lady, Michael and Tobia’s new dog. She is a mini-dachshund puppy, and she has puppy breath. Puppy breath is probably one of my top 5 favorite things.

And here is Colton, the newest baby in our family. (We’ve had 5 new babies on my mom’s side of the family this year, and Chris’ sister also had a baby.) That is my aunt Loey holding him. She is a proud grandma! And a good one, too. When my sister and I were little, she used to sit with us in the grass for hours and read us things like James and the Giant Peach.

–

I spent Thanksgiving Day with Chris’ family, who were all incredibly tolerant of my incessant picture-taking, as per usual.

I keep a gratitude journal and update it almost daily. It wouldn’t be hard for me to list out the things I am thankful for. But let’s give it a try, anyways.

I’m thankful for the family I was born into. The closest relatives I have in Houston is my mom’s first cousin, Tita Edith’s, family. Tita Edith’s kids, Anthony, Joanne, and Gino, are the cousins I grew up with and the cousins I will be connected to in the future. They’re pretty awesome human beings. Seeing them this past Thanksgiving was amazing and I’m thankful for them. We don’t see each other a lot, but I’m trying to change that and become more involved.

I’m thankful for the family I chose. I was able to see my great friend Chloe. Her mom and step dad were Mr. and Mrs. Clause for the Uptown Park Lighting Festival. Her husband, Chris, couldn’t go, because he recently had surgery on his collar bone and going through crowds wouldn’t have been smart. Chloe’s great Uncle George couldn’t go either, because of the crowds, as well. He has a walker and it would have been hard to navigate through the crowd. So Chloe invited me. I hadn’t seen her in awhile, since school has been taking up my life. And it was awesome to see her. She is one of the nursing school friends I am working hard to keep.

At the VIP section in front of Maggianos having appetizers. yum!

The fireworks after the Christmas trees were lit. Absolutely beautiful!!

Afterwards, I spent the night at Jackie’s. Her family was having a late Thanksgiving dinner. Jackie has a sister, Eva, who I love dearly. She is the type of person who has such an open heart. She knows that I am important to Jackie and has welcomed me in their family whole heartedly. Jackie’s mom and dad have made me feel welcome as well. I’m glad I was able to spend time with them, too.

I had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I had more than enough shares of turkey! And got to spend time with loved ones. The only time I spent alone was when I was driving.

I got my replacement phone today. It didn’t come with a SIM card, which defeated the purpose of getting my phone, but I just bought one at the TMobile store. I was able to get ahold of my loved ones through Google Voice. I had this phone number for my side business as a photographer. But it came in handy because I was able to text and make calls through the internet. If anyone needed to get ahold of me, they could text my Google Voice number and all the texts would go straight to my email. Pretty cool!

My great friend Lizzie’s wedding is tomorrow and I cannot wait to celebrate her and Nelson’s union. I asked many people to keep Lizzie and her baby in their prayers. And with the grace of God, she and her baby girl are doing well and are healthy! If that isn’t something to be thankful for, I don’t know what is.

When I woke up this morning, the first thing I saw was this angel’s face.
And having her in my life is absolutely a great blessing that I thank God for everyday. She has changed me in ways I could not fathom. I hope the start of the holiday season has treated you well.

Well I started watching this new (Well its not new, just new to me because I never used to watch it) show. And its really funny! Its called…

Family Guy

…and I love it! Okay, its not like my favorite show, but its really hilarious, so I thought Id share about it with you!

Family Guy is mostly about a dysfunctional family in a pretty crazy world. With spontaneous and sometimes stupid events this show will keep you laughing through the whole program. The Family has six members:

Peter the father, who is basically the main character of the whole show.

Lois the mother, who constantly tries to keep the family from losing control.

Stewie the homicidal baby, probably the funniest on the show.

Chris the son

Meg the daughter, and apperantly, nobody likes her.

Brian the dog who very often turns out to be smarter then the rest of the Griffin family.

I hope you will watch Family Guy if you dont already, its a hilarious show, and I highly recommend it.

Chris: One thing is definite and that is you’ve probably never seen anything quite like our next film. Again I’m Christopher Misch of Next Projection and this is a mini review of Sion Sono’s four hour Japanese epic melodrama, Love Exposure. This rather complex story centers around Yu, a teenage son of a Catholic priest who is good natured at heart but begins to rebel against his father after forced into confession nearly everyday. In the beginning, his confessions are lies as he makes sins up just to please his father. Soon these lies become truths, as Yu falls in with the wrong crowd. Together this bands of deviants pick fights, steal, and eventually learn the art of the ‘upskirt panty shot’. Yes, that right, I said ‘panty shot’. One day after losing a bet with his friends, he agrees to dress up as a woman and kiss the first girl he sees. It just so happens that the first girl he comes across is a stunningly attractive teenage girl named Yoko who he finds surrounded by a gang of thugs. Seizing the opportunity to impress her he comes to her rescue, still clad in women’s clothing, and together they fight off the gang. At first glace, Yu falls head over heels for Yoko and she with him; the only problem being that she believes she has fallen in love with woman and not a man. Underlying all this is a subplot that follows a member of a religious cult, who knows of Yu’s upskirt photographs and his feelings for Yoko and uses them as apart of her scheme to bring Yu and his family under the cult’s control.

This may sound like the most ridiculous idea for a movie ever, and by all accounts it is ridiculous, but it works. Even at four hours, it works. And I’m sure that even at the film’s original running length of six hours, it would still work. And the reason being Sion Sono’s exceptional script that fuses dramatic and comedic elements together so well while tackling issues of such as religion, perversion, love, and the contemporary Japanese family. Beneath all its eccentricities Love Exposure is essentially a standard melodrama, but that being said it’s also one of the funniest movies I’ve seen all year. It’s just hilarious how Yu and his friends approach this new ‘upskirt’ perversion of there’s as if it were a form of martial arts by taking training courses and including spins, summersaults, and flips into their techniques. Nevertheless, as entertaining and clever as this film is everything would have been for not if the performances didn’t measure up to the quality set forth by the other aspects of the film, but luckily they do. Both Takahiro Nishijima who plays Yu and Hikari Mitsushima who plays Yoko give brave performances; throwing everything they have into their respective roles and sure they are over-the-top at times but given the overall absurd nature of the film, the performances don’t stick out at all and in fact feel just right. Make no mistake about it, this is a special film. “SEE IT“.
