When someone asks you what you do for a living, do you want to be proud of what you say – or do you only care about the $$ sign on your next paycheck? My personal favorites are “The Chicken Sexer”, “The Dog Food Tester” and “The Professional Whistler” – who I’m pretty sure I met a few years ago oddly enough. Anyway, the one that really caught my attention was “The Odd Job Journalist”. Yes that’s right, someone actually gets paid to write articles on other weird jobs -how ironic is that? Must be a pretty fun job though, and in the end, isnt that what counts? My theory in life is to do what you love, because in the end, that’s when you’ll be you’re happiest.

Social Media. It’s been buzzing around for a while now, but what exactly is it? I wasn’t really sure either so when I got asked to start doing some research and integrate this into my company, I figured I better take action. Last Friday   attended a social media presentation at Mcgill, by Jeff Scott. It was very interesting to see what tools are out there to help you ad your company broadcast itself, and sometimes, it’s completely FREE!

Applications such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are 3 of the biggest Social Media tools available right now. Advertising on Facebook costs next to nothing AND can give you thousands of impressions. Linked In connects you to  the business world and is your business network. You can refer people to jobs, post your own CV, and converse with other business professionals to learn more about a certain field. What great system! Twitter is something else too! And no, its not just about knowing what your next door neighbor had for breakfast. In fact, Jeff told us of one case where someone used it in a crisis situation and had his friend bail him out of jail when he was all traveling in Egypt. Companies also have to keep in mind that monitoring is very important. Finding out what people are saying about your company in blogs, on Twitter or wherever it might be, is important for you to know, and if need be, react! For example, the two videos posted above were posted on Youtube. The first is of a very bad parking job of someone running over a Hyundai car, caught by the parking lot security camera. The second, is Hyundai’s response via Youtube once seeing this video. A classic example of monitoring,  finding something on social media and responding via Social Media! How cool is that!

Social Media is everywhere now and to keep a competitive advantage and be visible to your audience, you’ll most likely have to start getting on board with this. Good luck and have fun! This is only the beginning.

Voor de tweede keer werd de Unicefwinkel geopend in de aanwezig van heel wat politieke mandatarissen op de Vismarkt 5. Tot en met donderdag 24 december wordt de tijdelijke shop gerund door vrijwilligers van enkele serviceclubs en kan je er dagelijks van 10 tot 18u terecht om wens- of eindejaarskaarten of andere speciale hebbedingetjes aan 5 euro per stuk te kopen, ten voordele van de WASH (WAter-Sanitair-Hygiëne)-projecten van Unicef België in Rwanda en Congo.

“Het pand op de Vismarkt werd ons gratis ter beschikking gesteld door de heer en mevrouw Souvereyns. Wij hebben dit helemaal terug in orde gebracht door de muren een laagje verf te geven. Vergeleken met waar we vorig jaar zaten, in de Koning Albertstraat, valt het hier nog beter mee qua onderhoud”, aldus initiatiefneemster Christa Jouck.

Na toespraken van Bert Mertens, directeur van Unicef België, en bestendig afgevaardigde bij de Provincie Limburg, Erica Thijs, mocht burgemeester Hilde Claes het lint doorknippen.

Vorig jaar werd meer dan 27.000 euro ingezameld door de verkoop van wenskaarten. “Dit jaar willen we dat getal minstens evenaren”, verduidelijkt Christa Jouck nog even hun doelstelling.

If you want to be a good entrepreneur, take notes from this guy.  He started from the ground up and created one of the first commercially successful personal computers. He is also one of the best presenter’s I’ve ever seen. If you look at this youtube video, you can see how natural he is and how he really enthralls his audience. He understands the importance of design and knows that aesthetics plays a vital role when appealing to the public. This understanding is demonstrated every time he makes a presentation.

Among being the co-founder and CEO of Apple, Jobs also founded the computer platform development company “NeXt”. Presently, he is also a member of Walt Disney’s Board of Directors. Fortune Magazine named him Most Powerful Businessman of 2007. What an accomplishment! And what a Role model for young Entrepreneurs!

As this is the first blog entry, I’d like to give a little background of our group. We are six individuals who came together to work on a 4 month long project in our Direct Response Marketing Class. Most of us did not know each other before, which is always risky, but I think our group dynamics work perfectly together. Everyone wants to do well on our project so we are working together efficiently to make it happen. Our task is to work with Matt Hill to help him increase the stickyness and the traffic to his site Swimming with Sharks. It has proved to be very interesting working with someone who has done this for a long time. We all have great ideas, and not only to we say them, but we are including them in our project and are trying to implement them.

I am really happy that we had the opportunity to take on this project. With the economy these days, more and more people want to open up their own business, become their own boss, become an entrepreneur. This website will help people with this vision do that. And while we work on it, we are learning a lot ourselves.

But before figuring out how to become an entrepreneur, one should figure out if they are cut out to be one.  I will leave you with an article from the Wall Street Journal “So, you want to be an entrepreneur?”

Hi Steve,
I hope you are doing well…

So I’ve been applying for jobs lately and I wanted to an internet search on myself to see what the employers might find. I found some interesting stuff… stuff about our relationship… stuff I wrote to you… stuff that may have at one time been published on myspace or twitter or some other social networking site????? It all seems to be deleted now, ’cause I did an extensive search trying to find the original posts and I couldn’t find a thing except for the expired links with beginnings of letters I wrote to you. For all that was going on during that time, I wouldn’t expect you to keep anything confidential. And even if you did publicly post stuff for a time, I wouldn’t be mad, although it is a tad bit hurtful and maybe a little confusing.. I’m just kind of curious about whether or not this is true. Sorry to ask these questions about shit from so long ago. I don’t really care all that much, and I don’t want to bring any drama into either of our lives again. I’m not asking you to explain anything if you don’t want to; It’s only just honest curiosity.

I don’t have a myspace account anymore … As of 3 months ago. And I don’t tweet about my relationships. I fo keep a wordpress account (but it’s password protected). I used to have a live journal account around the time we were dating, but have since moved all the posts to my wordpress account.

I deleted my LJ account, and now only use Twitter, Facebook, auduiboo & wordpress (sometimes interchangeably). I have not, nor do u plan to release any notes, letters, or private info from when we were dating.

I loved you then incredibly – was hurt, and delt with it personally, but would not mire the memory with gossip or by posting subjective commentary. It pains me to think that you think I might have – or if it IS online, I would also like to know how this happened.

At present, I have no invested interest in talking about our relationship back then. We tried that, and u went vague on me – so I just decided it was better left unsaid.

My interest now consists of building a sustainable healthy plutonic relationship with you and your family. Let me know if u have realized u are madly in love with me, and want to shoot the moon – that may change things; (but I would like to remind you that you are married now, and things have changed for both of us).

Steve, I didn’t try to bring up any bad memories. And this did not start with me “digging in your personal blog” – I googled MY name. I googled MY email address. Your blogs showed up. I simply asked you what the deal was – no accusations. I don’t give enough of a shit to accuse you about this stuff. But these blogs were written by you. And that’s a fact. And that’s why it has to do with you.

I hope that you can understand my reasons for questioning what I found on PUBLIC internet about me. I agree that I don’t have the right to read everything that has been written about me. But when it gets public, it becomes my business. Just as public online statements are now the business of employers.

I mentioned that the links were expired in my first email. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn’t stuff out there that I didn’t find – stuff that IS public. I don’t care what you write about me in your private shit – that’s your business.

And you were reminding me that time had passed? Why? And with these words?? And I quote:

i didn’t instigate this “conversation”. i have mentioned that it is irritating; that it is accusatory, and that it is inflammatory. perhaps you don’t understand what “shoot the moon” means. perhaps you don’t understand that i am being a bit sarcastic at times. of course you haven’t fallen madly in love with me – yer friggn married! plus: we can’t even talk about the past without me getting irritated – cus you left and didn’t explain it.

don’t lecture me about what is and isn’t public. if you can find it – and you don’t need a password, or it isn’t hidden in someone’s personal property – it’s public. so … yeah. your name is public. your future boss is not going to care about such things. they are looking for people who are knocking off banks, joining in cult activity – slamming drugs, boozing it with hookers – GENERAL DEVIANT BEHAVIOR -that sort of thing.

My naivety?

You obviously don’t know how the job market works these days. If I read our story about me, I wouldn’t hire me. I’m studying this shit in school right now and employers judge you more than you think by what they see/read online. It’s not just about deviant behavior – it’s about overall character. And the competition is fierce these days.

How could I have better asked you about this? I thought I was being as delicate as possible in my first email. I tried very hard to be non-accusatory and polite, because I didn’t have any angry thoughts and I didn’t want it to come off like I did. But I guess it didn’t work. Please tell me, how could I have brought this up without making you mad?

I never once said you did anything wrong. I wasn’t mad.
I just thought I had a right to know if there were any public statements about me.

Excuse me for wanting a good job. Excuse me for being curious about public information about me. Excuse me for wondering if letters I wrote to YOU had been shared with the www. Excuse me for wondering about the horrible things you might be inclined to publicly say about me.

Like I said, I wasn’t mad. But your judgment of my initial email has sparked some irritation and anger on my side. And now you’ve left me wondering. And ONLY NOW have I become suspicious from your most recent email. So, if you do have anything that is public and incriminating to my character, I’d like to ask that you please remove it. It may bring great pleasure for you to share the intricacies of our past, but it is hurtful, demeaning, and unethical as far as I’m concerned. That’s the last you’ll hear from me about it. You know where I stand.

One last thought: why poke at me for leaving you without an explanation? I explained the best I could a few years ago when we first reunited. Not sure what you meant when you said I got all vague – I tried to be as straightforward and honest as possible. You said you don’t want to talk about the past, but if you have any questions, I urge you to ask and will do my best to answer them. But if you don’t have any unanswered questions, then don’t poke at me. After all, a “sustainable healthy plutonic relationship” cannot be mastered until all of the skeletons in the closets are out and destroyed. And it really can’t be had if you make me feel bad about what I did; or if my existence in your life still makes you feel bad about what happened.

Ball’s in your court. If I can’t spark a conversation that will make us both happy, then I certainly won’t try.

I am simply going to ask, what specifically did I write, which you believe to be slanderous or detrimental to your candidacy as a new hire? GOOGLE ’s got the best spiders out there. Go find it.

Find a statement that is “publicly accessable” that you find atrocious. Let me know what that statement is. I will review its value.

I am not in the habit of being censored on my private blog; (which is password protected), nor I don’t plan to be anytime soon – but I’ll take into consideration your limited knowledge of HR departments.

In the meantime, I have a request of you: write down the story of how we broke up, the events preceeding with regards to persons we know both have mutual acquaintances or friendships with, the evil deeds you think u did, I did, anyone else did. Be specific and accusatiry & deliberate. Be bold.

We will bury our stories at an agreed upon location / time.

If that will make you feel better, I am all for it. I just can’t promise that it will be anytime very soon. That’s quite a homework assignment that will take much mental energy.

Or maybe I will just forward you the emails I’ve already written to you. The ones you presumably shared on your personal blog. Contrary to what you may believe, there is not much more to my side of the story.

But I think you are right. A meeting, where we share the gooey details and bury (I’d rather burn them) our stories, will be good closure to all of this. And perhaps a new beginning, too.

But don’t try to judge me of being ignorant of HRM – or anything else for that matter. If you want to try to be friends with me, you can’t take cheap stabs at me like that. We both have to remember that we’ve both changed quite a bit, and you really have no clue about who I am now or what experiences I’ve had or what I know about HR or anything else. And I for you.

Maybe, after we bury or burn our old selves, we can have a formal introduction of our new selves.

On further recollection i think i behaved badly. i still think that you came off accusatory, but i could have handled this back and forth much better. we don’t need to meet up or burn papers. i’m good. i just don’t like anyone telling me what i can and can’t do with what i write – since i don’t really share it with anyone anyways.

My “blog” is basically a bunch of stuff i have online = so it doesn’t get lost. people have little to no access to the majority of the posts. It caught me off guard that you had access to even the first couple of lines. but i guess Google Spiders are quick. maybe i was moving the files around, and they were public for a second or two.

Also, i don’t like you coming into my life acting like you know me. we *are* friends, but with an asterisk. We should probably find little ways of figuring out who the other person became; but I don’t want to talk about our past relationship. i may have gotten defensive. sorry.

i do hope that you get the job your looking for. i don’t mean to be so curt. I also don’t think that anything that i wrote that is out an available to read (ie: the few sentences Google picked up) are damaging or any serious libel; but if you do, let me know what you think i ought to do to rectify the situation.

Christa ist Legende in der legendären Erikastrasse, eine der letzten Strassen in Hamburg, wo mit einer Ausnahme nur inhabergeführte Traditionsgeschäfte zuhause sind.

Es liegt genau neben Curry Queen und beide sind eine wunderbare Symbiose miteinander eingegangen. Curry Queen stellt bei schönem Wetter seine Tische vor Christas Ladenfront (und es ist fast immer schönes Wetter in Hamburg) oder sie hilft auch mal dort aus, wenn die Bedienung ausfällt, und im Gegenzug beliefert sie den Laden auch mal mit Waren. Christa weiss alles und kennt jeden in der Strasse seit Kindesbeinen an. Wäre sie nicht so jung, hätte ich sie fast als Tante Emma Laden für den qualitätsbewussten Anspruch genannt. Aber wie gesagt, ihr fehlen noch bestimmt 20 Jahre dafür.

Der Laden gehörte ursprünglich ihren Eltern. Mehr Tradition geht nicht. Aber sie unterhält sich fliessend nicht nur über Pasta und Pastrami, über Schokopralinen und Schnoopkram, sondern auch über Bits & Bytes. Sie selber war nämlich auch lange IT-Beraterin in der amerikanischen Computerindustrie. Gott sei Dank macht sie jetzt etwas anderes. Feinkost. Gut für uns alle.

Nach der Currywurst bei Curry Queen einfach mal bei Christa die Deli-Tüte für zuhause einpacken. Kaufbefehl! Schade, dass man Christa nicht auch eintüten und mitnehmen kann. Sie ist das Beste in ihrem Laden.

Lebensläufe sind wie Flussläufe. Sie mäandern, nehmen auch mal eine Stromschnelle, mal stauen sie sich auch, fliessen durch Gebirge und münden in anderen Flussläufen, in Seen oder auch im grossen Meer. Sie sind keine geraden Kanäle.

The second act caught my attention more than the first. Up until this point, the narrator had been used to provide both smooth transitions into the scenes and comic relief. However, here he added much more depth to the meaning of the show by breaking the wall between him and Race McCloud. He left the audience thinking about how we are all the narrator of our own life, and it is up to us to make it as interesting as we want.

The style of the play was like a comedic comic book…on stage. You usually see more of this in film or cartoons, but it was really interesting to see it performed by live actors. Many of the actors portrayed multiple characters very well. I was not too impressed with Fiona Kearns’s acting skills as Cookie McCloud, but she did okay for such a young actress.

This unconventional adventure story is filled with crazy characters, a fun plot, and often cheesy, but funny jokes. If you’re in the mood for something different, comical and enjoyable, The Unlikely Adventure of Race McCloud, Private Eye is sure to please.

I really enjoyed reading Ralph’s post about the different types of schools and what you can learn from attending these schools. I agree with him that they teach a person to do business, the law and how to cook, but not necessarily how to be a business person, a lawyer or a chef.

The moral, in my opinion, is that every professional school should implement a mandatory stage.  Practice and hand-on learning is the best experience you can get and it prepares you for the outside world. A person can be the smartest person in the room when it comes to exams and theory, but when the time comes to show their smarts in the real world, it can be the total opposite. When going into the work force, employees look for experience more so than grades.

This leads me to talk about the terrific Co-op program that JMSB offers to its students. I started off my University degree in this program. It has brought me to where I am today. My first work term was at Revision Eyewear (http://www.revisioneyewear.com/). It was such a success that I was offered the job of Marketing Coordinator at the end of the semester and I graciously accepted. I have been working at the same place now for over a year and have learned so much about Marketing and the business world in general.

Det var helt underbara tjejer jag var ute med den 24/10..
Ja då när jag hade min barnfria helg… den första på många, många år.
Ville inte förstöra den genom att dricka och sen bli bakfull
Vilket jag alltid blir… så jag var nykter och inte illa det faktiskt.
Dom tre senaste gångerna har jag varit helt sober…
så varför inte fortsätta med det.
Funderar på att avge ett nykterhetslöfte för resten av mitt liv.
Fast jag ska kanske ta mig en fylla först… ja för sista gången… Haha

Lite snacks bjöd Angela på. Vi sitter hos henne och förfestar.

Vi gick till Bishops Arms sen och var där till det stängde.

Eftersom jag var nykter så hade jag ju det väldigt trevlig med att lyssna på alla väldigt intelligenta samtal som pågick runt omkring mig..Hahaha
Men kan få till väldigt invecklade diskussioner om det mesta..Haha

Skönt att vakna nadabakrusig då på söndagen..
Men jag började på att bli sjuk då… Inte kul!!
Förkylningen sitter i fortfarande lite genom hostan.
Men den börjar ge med sig nu… Hostar nästan ingenting längre.

Ja det var en mycket givande helg…
Fick vila och bara vara… så underbart faktiskt.
Det är inte ofta sådant händer.

Har hittat sladden ni så jag har massor med bilder.
Kanske lägger jag ut dom i kväll… kanske i morgon…
