Chapter 14: “Who Will Inherit the Hereafter?”, added to the sidebar
.
Chapter 13 discusses verses 94-96 of our surah.
.
This is another silly idea put forward by Muhammad to the Jews, and it definitely qualify as “humiliating to human intellect”, as per Salomon Reinach:
.
If you alone are destined to be with God in the hereafter, then you should all desire death, and be united with your god?
.
The Quranic reasoning is that the Jews fear death because they know that Allah’s chastisement awaits them when they die.
.
In this chapter I show how preposterous this claim is:
.
- The Jew never made this claim
- Islam does make this claim in regards to Muslims (they alone will go to heaven)
- According to Jewish principles, non Jews may also merit the abode in the hereafter.
.
It is all laid out for you, and may be accessed through the link to Chapter 14 in the “Pages” menu on the right.

Vision is a difficult thing to pin down. It’s a mental and heart picture of what could be and what s

Vision is a difficult thing to pin down. It’s a mental and heart picture of what could be and what should be, it’s the energizing motivation that moves people to pour energy into a project, into a church, into a life.

January is vision month. Everyone is at it. People start going to the gym, a vague plan based on a vague awareness that they should be looking after themselves more for some reason. The vague vision is probably part of why people attend only vaguely once February arrives. People make New Year’s resolutions, again based on some vague awareness of what should be, or what shouldn’t be in their lives.

Why do people come to church? Is it the habit of a lifetime and that habit happens to bring them to the same church as you? Is it a vague awareness of what should be, and so they vaguely attend the church you attend? Or is there a crystal clear vision that energizes, mobilizes and invigorates? I suppose there are three types of churches that come to mind:

1. The “Yes we have a vision, but I’m not sure exactly how to define it” church – This is the church that has some statement somewhere, perhaps something relating to the three functions of the church, or something vaguely connected to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. But if it is undefined (or impossible to remember), what value does it have? If we don’t know it, why should anyone else? If we don’t know it, we aren’t energized by it or committed to it and it is borderline irrelevant to the life of the church. January is a great month to clarify with crystal precision the vision of the church.

2. The “Our vision changes each year” church – This is the church that chooses a vision verse for the year, preaches on it in January and then may or may not return to it during the year. It is worth asking what difference this makes, and why a clear “what could be and what should be” picture of the preferred future of this church is not articulated and re-articulated regularly.

3. The “We resist contemporary approaches to vision statements” church – This is the church that puffs out the chest and makes statements about the biblical vision for all local churches being a local expression of the same global vision which is articulated in Scripture. Agreed. But if people are coming to church because of habit, or because it is the nearest option with the right denominational tag, then perhaps it’s time to articulate clearly what that biblical vision for all churches is . . . for your church.

There are other churches too. The “We’ve never thought about it” church, and perhaps even the “clear and compelling vision in place and regularly re-articulated” church. What kind of a church are you in? January is coming, vision month. What’s the plan?

I’m lying in bed. I was about to watch some Stargate SG-1 and fall asleep, but I paused it and started praying first. Now sometimes, I pass out while praying and then miss whatever I was going to watch completely, but I was a bit baffled in these past couple minutes.

I prayed God would teach me to pray prayers of intercession for other people. I admitted that I might be able to pray well around people, but I that I have not been an avid prayer in my personal life. And all of the sudden names and faces of people I haven’t talked to in forever started coming to my head as to who to pray for. So I did. I also had a couple of minor ideas as to what to pray for, but for the most part, I just prayed prayers of blessing and direction.

Alright, now off to the stargate.

I did not know about this happening in Australia… Assyrians, a Christian ethnic group whose homeland

I did not know about this happening in Australia…

Assyrians, a Christian ethnic group whose homeland lies between northern Iraq, Syria, western Iran and southeastern Turkey, say hundreds of thousands of their people were killed by Turks during and after World War I.

The Sydney memorial was approved for installation in Edensor Park despite a request by Foreign Minister Stephen Smith that the proposal be rejected.

Mr Ozge yesterday denied the Assyrians’ claims of genocide and described the council’s stance as "very offensive".

"It hurts the Turkish Australians living in this country and it is an attempt at destroying the harmony of the two communities living in Australia side by side," he said. "We are looking into whether we can do anything, legally or otherwise."

The Local Government Association says it recognises that genocide took place.

However, the state and federal governments do not recognise that claim.

Riot police were deployed to keep the peace between Turkish and Assyrian groups outside the council chambers as the decision was being made last Tuesday.

Hermiz Shahen, secretary of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, yesterday admitted his group had not consulted the Turkish community over its plans, but insisted it had not been their intention to clash with them over the statue.

"There is no mention of the Turks on the plaque; that is part of our respect for the community here," Mr Shahen said.

He said the statue was dedicated to the "souls of Assyrian martyrs".

Behold, the dwelling of God is with humankind. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them, and be their God. Revelation 21:3

INVITATORY & PSALTER

Lord, open our lips,
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm 100
Jubilate

Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands;
serve the Lord with gladness
and come before his presence with a song.

Know this: The Lord himself is God;
he himself has made us, and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
go into his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and call upon his Name.

For the Lord is good;
his mercy is everlasting;
and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

Psalm 97

The LORD is King; let the earth rejoice; *
let the multitude of the isles be glad.
Clouds and darkness are round about him, *
righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne.
A fire goes before him *
and burns up his enemies on every side.
His lightnings light up the world; *
the earth sees it and is afraid.
The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, *
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
The heavens declare his righteousness, *
and all the peoples see his glory.
Confounded be all who worship carved images
and delight in false gods! *
Bow down before him, all you gods.
Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, *
because of your judgments, O LORD.
For you are the LORD, most high over all the earth; *
you are exalted far above all gods.
The LORD loves those who hate evil; *
he preserves the lives of his saints
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light has sprung up for the righteous, *
and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted.
Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, *
and give thanks to his holy Name.

Psalm 98

Sing unto the LORD a new song, *
for he has done marvelous things.
With his right hand and his holy arm *
has he won for himself the victory.
The LORD has made known his victory; *
his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.
He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, *
and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; *
lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing.
Sing to the LORD with the harp, *
with the harp and the voice of song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn *
shout with joy before the King, the LORD.
Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, *
the lands and those that dwell therein.
Let the rivers clap their hands, *
and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD,
when he comes to judge the earth.
In righteousness shall he judge the world *
and the peoples with equity.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE LESSONS
Proverbs 8:22-30 (NRSV)

The LORD created me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of long ago.
Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth -
when he had not yet made earth and fields,
or the world’s first bits of soil.
When he established the heavens, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always.

Canticle: First Song of Isaiah
Ecce, Deus
Isaiah 12:2-6

Surely, it is God who saves me; *
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, *
and he will be my Savior.
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing *
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say, *
Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;
Make his deeds known among the peoples; *
see that they remember that his Name is exalted.
Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, *
and this is known in all the world.
Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, *
for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

John 13:20-35 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.”

After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, “Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.” The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. One of his disciples – the one whom Jesus loved – was reclining next to him; Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. So while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. After he received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “Do quickly what you are going to do.” Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. Some thought that, because Judas had the common purse, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival”; or, that he should give something to the poor. So, after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Canticle: The Song of the Redeemed
Magna et mirabilia
Revelation 15:3-4

O ruler of the universe, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done, *
surpassing human understanding.
Your ways are ways of righteousness and truth, *
O King of all the ages.

Who can fail to do you homage, Lord
and sing the praises of your Name? *
for you only are the Holy One.
All nations will draw near and fall down before you *
because your just and holy works have been revealed.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us by your Holy Spirit.

Collect of the Day: St. John, Apostle and Evangelist

Shed upon your Church, O Lord, the brightness of your light; that we, being illumined by the teaching of your apostle and evangelist John, may so walk in the light of your truth, that at length we may attain to the fullness of eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for Peace

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Please offer your own prayers and supplications here.)

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.++

All the presents have been opened. The last Christmas cookie has been eaten. The tree is dropping needles all over the wood floor; and you go back to work in the morning. Bummer, right?

It’s hard to return to office routines after the holidays. We’ve enjoyed late-night games of chess or pinocle, seen the new movie releases — eaten, drank and made merry with no thought to alarm clocks, deadlines or unfinished projects on the job.

Why can’ t we linger here a little longer?

Even the shepherds had to go back to work. The herald angels found them on the job that first Christmas — out in the field watching over their flocks. They were told a Savior had been born in Bethlehem, and they set out to see for themselves. But the shepherds didn’t camp at the manger anymore than we can.

They returned to the fields where their flocks were waiting. They went back to work.

Each of us has a field of influence and responsibility. Maybe it’s sitting in front of an office computer, seeing patients in a hospital, caring for children in daycare, managing loans at a bank or moving mail at a post office.

Wherever we’re expected in the morning, what will be our attitude on arrival? The shepherds returned to work, “glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen.”

We’ve enjoyed bounty and blessing this Christmas. Why not imitate the shepherds, and take a spirit of gratitude back to work?

“All praise be yours, my Lord, for Sister Death, from whose embrace no mortal can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those She finds doing your most holy will: by you, Most High, they will be crowned.” -St. Francis of Assisi-

one of the things that i adore about Christianity (besides the obvious) is its weirdness factor. for those that may think Christianity is lame or lightweight take a gander at the pictures below.

what you’re looking at are photos from the crypt of the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini in Rome, Italy. once upon a time between 1626 and 1631, the Cardinal Antonio Barberini of the Capuchin Order commanded that bones of the Capuchin friars be exhumed and transferred from Via dei Lucchesi to their new home in the church crypt. they decided to arrange the bones of these saints into these Baroque and Rococo (not to mention grotesque and jaw-dropping) displays as a Memento Mori (or Remembrance of Death). the crypt contains the remains of about 4,000 friars buried between 1500-1870. they are divided into five chapels: the crypt of the resurrection, the crypt of the skulls, the crypt of the pelvises, the crypt of the leg bones and thigh bones, and the crypt of the three skeletons. it is said that the Capuchin Monks come to this place to meditate and pray before going to bed for the evening. a plaque on one of the chapel wall reads,

“What you are now, we once were; what we are now, you shall be.”

i think we can all freely admit that this kicks proverbial ass! creepy? hell yes! awesome? fuck yeah! Marilyn Manson is a stupid gimmick. give me a Coat of Arms made from the actual arms of monks any day. JESUS IS LORD!

St. John declares that words make us human. That words, even, make us exist. It is words, and not

St. John declares that words make us human. That words, even, make us exist. It is words, and not pictograms or tools or logic or emotions. And so St. John is the patron saint of writers.

I mean St. John the Evangelist, theoretical author of what is known as John’s gospel. I don’t know or care who wrote the thing. The prologue is one of my favorite pieces of literature. (St. John also theoretically wrote Revelation, but Martin Luther and I don’t approve of Revelation.)

“In the beginning was the word.” And part of Jewish, and Christian, creation tradition has held that the world was made with words. This “God” or “Lord” character speaks to make things be.

At the art museum here, we have a stained glass window that was made in medieval Europe, showing St. John holding a cup with a snake in it. The story is, St. John and his buddies were captured by some bad guy, and the bad guy forces St. John and his buddies drink poison. This bad guy must be building the grand tradition of unnecessarily elaborate execution techniques honored in “Austin Powers” with my favorite “sharks with lasers.”

St. John is so uber powerful that he drinks his poison, and then his buddies’ poison, and he’s fine. Well, maybe he has a little food-poisoning type digestive discomfort, but the point of the story is that poison cannot kill him. He is a badass.

Some people find St. John’s gospel a little airy. Some people say that Jesus’ feet never touch the ground. I don’t see that. What I see is a writer who had an experience of the Christ, rather than Jesus the man, and painted a more abstract picture. The author struggled to find any language that would put the power of a Christ figure into focus. Any language that would contain the experience at all. St. John’s gospel explodes the Jesus notion into the Christ idea. It says, you have no idea what this Christ thing means. You have no idea how big this is. You have no idea the force of love over ambivalence, confusion, or loss.

When I was in Rome last summer, I searched all over the Vatican City for a St. Giovanni Evangelista medal. I’m not Catholic, and I have never bought or owned a medal, except, perhaps, the Libra medal that my step-grandma bought me when I was little. I don’t think that counts. In each little shop, I walked past the counters of rosaries and small towns of statues to bins of medals. ”St. Giovanni,” I told the salesclerks. They nodded. ”Evangelista,” I added. Their lips pursed pessimistically.

Only at one spot, directly across the street from St. Peter’s, did I find a silver St. Giovanni Evangelista. He wears the usual Bible-person type robes, and he has a book in his lap. His buddy animal (the patronage goes on and on) is the eagle, so an eagle perches on the book. St. John and the eagle are both too tiny to have real facial expressions, but I think the eagle looks like he’s thinking, “Whassup?” I bought the medal, and put it on immediately.

At my church, St. John is the right-hand side of the triptych. Christ in the middle, St. Peter on the left. St. Peter holds his keys, which always makes him look like an annoying older brother. Jesus left me with the keys, y’all, so, watch it! St. John, as usual, has his snake cup. He take the poison for himself, and for anyone else who’s feeling weak. That’s what makes him such a good man to have around, not just for writers, but anybody who runs into a bad guy now and then.

One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. — Proverbs 29:23

Recently, I intended to read a particular book only to discover that it wasn’t on my bookshelf as I had thought! My friend Karen posted a blog some time ago based on a book that she was reading, Brokenness by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, which caused me to want to read that book. So I took my 20% coupon and membership card down to Barnes & Noble and picked up the book. I have been very blessed by it! I would have blogged about earlier topics if I hadn’t been so busy or so sick. Today, I really want to hold onto what I read, and I find that writing is the easiest way for me to achieve that! So here goes…

The purpose of this particular chapter is to help the reader see areas in his/her life that may need to be submitted to the Lord. It gives characteristics of a proud person vs. characteristics of a broken person. As I read through the list, I thought that each one of them sounded like things that we all fall into occasionally just because we’re human. Well, duh!!! We are, in our fleshly, natural state, proud! I’ve mentioned many times how all my sins seem to root themselves in pride and this list just proves that!

I could share with you the proud characteristics that I most identify with. I could quite easily confess specifics in each category, but I think that is for me to deal with in my personal prayer time and pertinent relationships. Instead I want to share with you a couple of the characteristics of broken people that made me think, “I want to be more like that!”

Broken people reverence, encourage, and lift up those that God has placed in positions of authority, and they talk to God in intercession, rather than gossiping about the faults they see in others.

Hmm… This includes pastors, my husband, political leaders, law enforcement officers, my boss, and so many more. Often I respect those people. I usually accept and submit to their authority. But do I reverence, encourage, and lift them up? Do I intercede on their behalf?

Broken people are motivated to be faithful and to make others successful.

What?!? Seek to make others successful!!! Yes, if I’m seeking to make myself successful, that is still focusing on me. Does that mean that I shouldn’t do my best at everything that I do? No. I should still do all things with excellence and integrity, but I should be putting others ahead of myself. That’s definitely not a natural thing to do!

Broken people know that any praise of their accomplishments belongs to the Lord and that criticism can help them grow into spiritual maturity.

Okay, the whole praise belongs to the Lord thing is sort of easy. Not that I don’t sometimes take all the glory. I do, but in my heart I always know that He really deserves it all. But I’m not so good at taking criticism. Perhaps remembering the outcome of the criticism (spiritual maturity) will be just the sugar that I need to help that medicine go down!

Broken people are concerned with being real; they care less about what others think than about what God knows — they are willing to die to their own reputation.

Wow, I don’t know if I’m willing to die to my reputation. I’ve worked pretty hard at making sure that my reputation is one of being kind, helpful, hard-working… Am I willing to admit that my proud heart isn’t always kind but sometimes even thinks hateful thoughts? Could I confess that sometimes my acts of service are in hopes that I’ll get some praise and glory? Is it possible to acknowledge that often my hard work is so I will be lifted up? Yikes! This one is tough, but if I truly want to “walk humbly before my God,” then it is His reputation that I must be concerned about. Not my own!

There are so many more points that I could ponder, but this little brain can only take so much in one night! So, why would I want to be “broken?”

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. – Psalm 51:17

But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. – Isaiah 66:2a

Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will exalt you. – James 4:10

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:3

I was listening to a ministry online on Sunday and throughout the broadcast they kept singing a song

I was listening to a ministry online on Sunday and throughout the broadcast they kept singing a song called “You make all things new”. It so ministered to my spirit.

The Bible is clear that we have to forget the pass in order to move forward. Last year I went through the same “trauma” twice and it’s made me very fearful about making a big step next year. But I do know one thing. I feel an urgency in my spirit to make a change. I keep telling my family and close friends that whatever changes are going to be made will be made in the month of January.

Often when we make our resolutions and we start making plans for the next year we sometimes give ourselves 6 months or so to get started. But this year I cannot afford to do that. I know I am have to do some radical things and let the chips fall where they may.

My fathers sister thanked me for taking care of my Dad and I so appreciated it but I also took that as a “graduation” speech. Sometimes people (especially family) will allow you to just keep doing what you do and meanwhile life is passing you by.

My Dad had 8 children. Seven are still alive and well and it time for someone else to pick up the ball because I’m about to drop it. I’ve done all that I can do and it’s time for something new.

When you find yourself in situations and there has been no change, YOU must make the change and that is what I’m about to do. God is making all things new.

Isaiah 43:18-19:

18 Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old.

19 Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fig leaves together around their hips to cover themselves. Genesis 3:7 (NLT)

The need for devotional thoughts began here. Up until this point, the relationship of creation to Creator was perfect. And after this point, well, notice how sudden, subtle and complete was the Fall ~ notice, too, how far reaching…

Not only do I regularly find myself in the same brutally unholy morass into which Adam and Eve plunged themselves, but I have seen whole ministries built with this error as one of the keys to the foundation.

When Adam and Eve rebelled in the Garden of Eden, they felt shame at their nakedness ~ not at their disobedience. This is the beginning of humanity’s very long history of feeling still justified in the sin, while ashamed at the consequences.

Naturally, this leads to an unfortunate reality: we regularly repent of the result of our sins, rather than our actual sinfulness…

O Lord forgive me! Once again I find myself so deeply in need of your mercy that I don’t know where or how to even cry out… I’m not even worthy of begging from you… Lead me, Lord, in your way… Speak, please, for your servant is listening…

It’s days before Christmas
and, just as I thought
There’s no wrapping done
and gifts still to be bought

Decorations are meager
just a small, tiny tree
not much red and green
for my roommate and me

But last night, we went shopping
just me and the boys
We found lots of stuff
candy, jewelry, and toys

Zipping all over town
from Costco to Fry’s
Finding new gifts
brings delightful surprise

Being oh so excited
about a great find
Each purchase, it puts us
in the best frame of mind

By the time we got home
I had aches in my head
Barely got in the door,
went directly to bed

A few hours later
I unpacked the trunk
and excitement renewed
as I surveyed my junk!

Chocolates for some
and pictures for others
Spam for my dad
Best Buy for my brother

And some secret gifts
that I bought on the sly
The ones who’ll receive
will be very surprised

I am finally excited
for Christmas this year
Can’t wait for the happiness,
joy, and good cheer!

Well, with the exception of two hate-filled, swearing-laden days, we are having a fabulous Christmas

Well, with the exception of two hate-filled, swearing-laden days, we are having a fabulous Christmas. I won’t bother getting into specifics about those two days, except to say that my sister-in-law (whom I have briefly mentioned before) was at the center of it all and that it ended up working out in the end. This was our first year to have Christmas Day all to ourselves. I made a blueberry breakfast bake for that morning, and then I made my first Christmas dinner which we ate at 3:00, right after changing out of our pajamas. It was absolutely luxurious. We even had snow – snow – ALL DAY on Christmas Eve. It made driving dicey, but it meant we had something like our sixth white Christmas since weather recording started in the 1800s. It was so fun watching our two-year old black lab running around like a maniac in it. We even saw her taste some.

Before the season is totally over, I realized I hadn’t shared our family Christmas countdown with you like I had our Thanksgiving one. This one works the same way: We tape a big piece of white paper to my son’s bedroom door and number it from the first through the twenty-fifth. At the top it says, “Helping Others Means Helping Jesus… Our Advent Countdown.” Then, again, rotating and using the color marker that corresponds with each of us, we write something nice that we did that day. The idea is that we are preparing a warm place for Jesus by striving to do good acts for others. We try to remember that while these things can be physical (‘I helped my friend clean up’), they can also be spiritual (‘I prayed for broken arms and legs’). I got the idea from a book which suggests that the list be cut into strips between the numbers, and then the paper is crumpled to make a warm patch of hay for baby Jesus in the manger. I like the idea, but it’s a lot of work and the sentimentalist in me likes saving the list in our “Keepsake Bible.”

I have been thinking of all of you and hoping that your Christmases have been beautiful, rejuvenating, and holy as well.
