The final performance by Adam Lambert certainly raised eyebrows and caused ABC to edit out sections of Lambert’s performance in the west coast broadcast. Some felt it was too racy and inappropriate for television. This is the same show in which Janet Jackson’s opening performance had Janet grabbing one of her dancer’s crotch as she pushed him forward in the If dance routine.

Lambert comments after the show questioned whether there was a double standard when others have pushed the envelope on several of the AMA shows. As mentioned above, this show contained a similar act by Janet and other performances were risqué for example Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and others.

Why does our society react to seeing two men in a moment of intimacy? The reaction to heterosexual intimacy on performances is cherished, female same gender intimacy is exciting to men, yet male same gender intimacy is offensive and scorned. I remember several years ago attending a movie (I believe it was Madonna’s movie) and in the scene when two guys kissed, the audience gasped. It was shocking to hear and see the reaction – but here again it was a clear message that it was wrong.

We must remember that reactions to a movie or the Lambert also have a direct impact on the many LGBTQ individuals in our society. Even our youth, who may be struggling with understanding their identity, receive negative messages by the reaction to Lambert, or the gasp in the movie theatre. This not only hampers their identity development, but it reinforces in society that the LGBTQ is less-than and it is okay to look at the community with distain.

Quite frankly, Lambert is right — there is a double standard and it lacks the valuing of valuing of different identities. Our society does not comprise of heterosexuals only. There are many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, same gender loving, queer, down-low, (or any way one defines their sexual and gender identity) in our society. So we do need to find a space that all identities are valued and none are subjugated by the majority.

It is homophobia and heterosexism in our society that inhibits our celebrities from expressing their identity. Lambert was very out throughout American Idol and it is probably because of his comfort that he was selected American Idol. The message, like so many that we receive, is that it is not okay to be non-heterosexual in this world. The message that Lambert received Sunday night was that his performance was not okay. The fact that LGBTQ are not visible in entertainment, sports, politics, etc. is a sign that our society is too hostile. If we were more welcoming and accepting, more people would feel comfortable in living their lives fully.

Because Lambert’s performance was viewed in a heterosexual prism, many view it as inappropriate. Many in the LGBTQ community probably cheered Lambert for having the guts to perform and be comfortable with his identity. Clearly this is probably the first male performance of its kind. Isn’t it sad to think that in all these years no LGBTQ performers felt comfortable to express their identity? Look at how most performers on these shows and in concerts celebrate their heterosexual identities. Why is it okay for them to celebrate their heterosexual identity and a gay performer cannot celebrate his identity? Do we honestly believe that men don’t kiss each other? Why is it right for one group and not the other?

Simply put, the majority of any group general sets the “standard” for other groups. This is the root of social injustice. Powerless minority groups seldom have the power or involved in these decisions. Change is necessary for inclusion. Similar to the issue of same sex marriage, our society needs to broaden its world view and realize that sexual and gender identity is very broad. Heterosexual, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender individual are all Americans. We all have a right to be included, valued as equal citizens, and free to express ourselves. Instead of defining the minority group (LGBT) as “wrong” — we need to find ways of valuing the broad diversity of sexual and gender identity.

Realize it is not long ago that performers of color had challenges as well. People did not value and include people of color. While there are improvements we have to careful on how other “minority” groups are targeted in our society.

So I encourage our country to reflect on your reactions of Lambert and then ask yourself why you are having a reaction. Do you react the same way to performers that identify as heterosexual and have similar performances? If not then there is clear double standard and probably reflects your personal feelings about the LGBT community.

The long-awaited filming of Burlesque [1], Christina Aguilera’s first movie, have finally started, so her public outings are rarer than before. She was recently spotted out in Los Angeles with her husband: they went to Osteria Mozza, one of her favourite Italian restaurants. What hits us is her brand new haircut. I must admit I have loved it since the first time I saw these pics: Christina looks so much younger and fresher with this bob and parted bangs. I’m a fan of long hair, but this haircut really suits her. Of course she didn’t get rid of her trademark platinum blonde, but made it even blonder.

She wore a very simple, yet cute, outfit: she paired black leggings with a black t-shirt and a black leather motorcycle jacket.

Her Christian Louboutin Calypso pumps are to die for, and so is her clutch, one of the many Balenciaga bags she owns.

This is a Cherche Midi clutch in black pleated leather and suede. Balenciaga bags are the best, in my opinion, but this style doesn’t convince me much, maybe because the beautiful pleating is not emphasized by the black leather. Christina looks a bit pissed off in this pic, cute! Her make-up is focused on red lips as usual, while her eyes are barely made-up.

Christina is a huge Louboutin fan, but she was not the first to sport Calypso pumps.

The forerunner was Blake Lively, who wore the same version (black with glittering blue cap toe) in October 2009 with a gorgeous Victoria Beckham dress.

Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron wore the same style but with a different colour combination – red and black with glittering green cap toe.

This week’s Musical Monday is inspired by yesterday’s Women’s Half Marathon.  With over 5000 women, there was a whole lot of sweat and estrogen.  I’ll have a full race report a little later today, but in the meantime enjoy these tunes which best describe my experience.

Whenever I interview a musician, I can hardly wait to get to my favorite part of the interview is asking an artist about the inspiration behind his or her songs.  The inspiration for songs is as imaginative as can be—some stories are silly, some are lovely, others aren’t all that special—but they’re all interesting.  This is why I love the latest Chicken Soup for the Soul Book: The Story Behind the Song.

I know, I know.  I usually stay away from sloppy, emotional stuff, and Chicken Soup books can definitely fit that category, but this book is different.  It offers a look into the minds of contemporary artists from a variety of genres, such as Jewel, Christina Aguilera, Kanye West, John Legend, Rick Springfield, Iggy Pop, Tom Higgenson of Plain White T’s, Ann Wilson of Heart, and many, many more!

For example, did you know that “Jessie’s Girl” was written about a cute girl in Rick Springfield’s stained glass class, the guy’s name wasn’t actually Jessie, and that it was the catalyst for his career?  How about the fact there’s a real Delilah who inspired “Hey Delilah” by the Plain White T’s, but Tom Higgenson never actually dated her?  I have learned all sorts of interesting facts about some of my favorite songs—“Livin’ On a Prayer” by Bon Jovi, “Operator” by Jim Croce (yes, I’m a dork!), “At Seventeen” by Janis Ian, “Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett, and “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx.  And I finally know what “Sister Christian” (Night Ranger) is all about!  That in and of itself is worth the price of the book.

America’s Next Top Model has featured two shoots heavily inspired by the theme of “Circus”. Cycle 7 saw the models portraying the different characters who are often part of a touring circus.

Cycle 13 saw the models participate in a “Circus” themed shoot – but this time it also featured members of CIRQUE DU SOLEIL – a Canadian entertainment company, self-described as a “dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment.”

I’ve only ever been to the Circus twice in my life.

The first time, I went to see a touring Circus company in my local park and have very few memories of the whole experience as I was young. HOWEVER> I was fortunate enough to go to Las Vegas a few years back and went to see Cirque du Soleil’s “Mystère” at the Treasure Island Hotel. It was insane. I can’t explain how unreal and SURREAL the whole spectacle was. The performers perform like i’ve never seen anyone perform. They are able to move their bodies in ways I didn’t think were possible. They’re the best actors. The best dancers. The most innovative and creative beings. It’s such a journey – seeing their art live. I strongly suggest that all of you check out a Cirque du Soleil show once in your life!

Christina Aguilera is reportedly inviting fans to join in her bash New Year bash in  Las Vegas – for a price. 

The singer will allegedly play the role of the hostess at the December 31 party at Tao nightclub in Las Vegas.  

The star was apparently throwing open the entry for fans with tickets costing $150. The tickets to the lavish party purportedly include entry into the club, food and an open bar.

Last Saturday, Kristen and I were talking about the music history workshops we taught with some bad-ass GRCA alums for the Girls Now! conference. As you can imagine, it’s hard to pare down nearly a century’s worth of female contributions to popular music into a 75-minute PowerPoint presentation and have it be fun and interactive as well. Thus, we made sure to include many music videos and performance clips that hopefully engaged our girl attendees. One such clip was Christina Aguilera’s Grammy performance of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” apparently beloved by Patti Smith. Afterwards, Kristen mentioned that it was possible to do an entire section on cover songs and wished we had more time to highlight and discuss more interesting examples.

Too right, Kristen. In fact, I think I started this section of the blog to cull together noteworthy cover songs, as I think covers are fascinating. What does song selection and interpretation say about the artist? How do their personae, generic alignments, and identity markers give the source material new meaning? What does it mean for Solange Knowles — aka Ms. “Fuck the Industry (Signed Sincerely)” — to cover an indie rock song like Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is The Move,” which was originally inspired by Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire and includes a sample of “Bumpy’s Lament” in her version? What does it mean for Cat Power to adopt the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” as a signature song and create several arrangements of it ranging from stripped-down folk to soulful rave-up? How does Tori Amos blow apart Eminem’s misogynistic murder fantasy in ”‘97 Bonnie and Clyde” by orienting herself as the dead wife in the trunk?

Continuing why I hope to be an on-going discussion, tonight I selected two songs originally recorded by James Brown and Sam Cooke. ”It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” has always seemed to me to be an ode to chauvinism. ”A Change Is Gonna Come,” however, is an anthem for social change that came to define the Civil Rights Movement. But think about what additional meanings these songs may have when performed by Christina Aguilera and Sharon Jones.

Baila con Christina Aguilera y la penetra toda la senectud por las nalgas firmes. ¿Se puede ser más soberbio? Y atrás Charlie Watts, el batería mudo, el que arranca con fatiga y después encuentra su ritmo constante. Detrás de su mirada quizá no hay más. Nunca dijo nada y tal vez no tuvo qué decir o se lo calló o ninguna de las cosas. El único que dejó sus canas libres al ritmo de una batería discreta, como si fuera una figura del museo de cera. Con el público, al que mima y guiña el ojo o regala una púa. Tiene ese gesto que atrapa por la bondad del más malvado, el canalla que todos deseamos ser y que matamos por timidez o frustración. Ese tipo debería ser el más antiguo del cementerio para contar todos los excesos que llevan a la tumba y es al revés, la fosa se muere de hastío echando al cielo la más aburrida flor. Un cigarro prohibido vuela escupido por su boca y fabrica un solo de simpatía por el diablo. Y viéndole ¿Quién va a sentir lo contrario? Sólo cuando acaba el último bis con el Satisfaction pide desesperado su bata, muerto de frío, como un cadáver que se mira a un espejo. Después los cuatro van a sus camerinos, acaban su trabajo y se separan rumbo a sus casas, restaurantes de moda, antros o prostíbulos de lujo. Han cumplido su contrato y seguirán haciéndolo hasta que el rock and roll sea un sueño que un día ocurrió. Antes de que se les despegue la piel de la cara la música les cartografiará por siempre jamás.

I’ve lost nearly a whole years worth of photos because Chris’ HDD decided to jump off the top of the CPU and break. Oh bye me. Bloody waste of time if you ask me! There’s some other stuff too that I don’t really want to go into but basically, letting stuff get too much isn’t a good thing.

I have some good news though! Scarlett Jarvis was born at 22:55 yesterday evening weighing 9lb 8oz! After Kayleigh texted me yesterday, I was up until 5am and was awoken at 7am from a text she sent me, informing me of the news! I read it half asleep and having only 2 hours sleep! Haha. I woke up at 11am thinking that I had dreamt it! I was so happy! gonna go to the hospital to see them tomorrow as she’s coming home Friday morning. Also pleased that she wasn’t born on a Wednesday so she’s now “full of grace” and not woe which is nice as her mum is a classy young lady and someone that I love very much! <3

FRANKENSTEIN IN 3D! It was weeeiiiiirrrrrdddd! Kinda cool in parts though. The film was campy, cheesy, 1973 horror and was really funny and a bit porny tbh. Boobies everywhere. Actually, anything on TV in 3D is just odd. It works ok, it's not brilliant but cool all the same. I had to wear my glasses over the top of the 3D ones so I could sit further back and not in front of the screen, holding them on my face!

Onto something new now:

BURLESQUE starring Christina Aguilera and Cher! Started filming a few days ago and we're getting candids of Xtina on set already!!! She looks amazing! And there’s a video here.

I’m so excited for this film (mainly because I’m a stan)! Really looking forward to going to see it in the cinema! Mind you, I said that about Sex and The City and The X-Files but I never went to see them THIS I definitely will though.

Ahh, Darla <3 I love her so much. I completely forgot that she was the first EVER vampire you see in the Buffy pilot until I watched them all. Bless her, she shared Connor's soul and staked herself to save him. My favourite episode of Buffy/Angel is the "Fool For Love"/"Darla" crossover. You learn a lot about Angelus, Darla, Spike and Dru. Amazing.

"Has Cordy been a bad, bad girl?" and the Magic 8-Ball says, "Definitely". Haha. I love Lorne. I really hope I honour Andy Hallett in my story. Actually, I hope I honour all the people who inspired my "gang".

I love Wesley. I love his evolution. As he said, "my throat was cut and all my friends abandoned me". That's a good excuse to rebel Plus, Faith tortured him in season one so he had his reasons!

Aww! DARLA! I love her. She was such a sad character. Always felt really sorry for her, especially when she revealed that she couldn’t remember her real name after 400 years of life. She was already 200-odd when she sired Liam and therefore turned him in Angelus. She was dying before The Master changed her and when Wolfram & Hart brought her back as human, she started to die again. Then Dru turned her back She’s trying to convince Connor not to kill the girl now.

Skip is telling them that everything happened for a reason to bring the whole story together. It makes sense when you think about it all and the way it happened.

Depois de Christina Aguilera ter sido vista em um show da banda brasileira Cansei de Ser Sexy, o novo CD da moça me deu mais curiosidade ainda. Para quem não sabe, ele vai se chamar “Light & Darkness”.

Na produção e nas letras, além do mestre Ron Fair, a loira contou com a ajuda de ninguém menos que as bandas britânicas Goldfrapp e Ladytron, da cantora australiana Sia Furler e do DJ africano Premier. Em entrevista ao Ryan Seacrest, ela disse que Mark Ronson, de “Back To Black” de Amy Winehouse, e Christopher Tricky Stewart também estarão no álbum. Esse último ficou conhecido por produzir sucessos como “Single Ladies”, da Beyoncé.

Agora, a maior novidade para mim é que, dizem, Aguilera vai regravar em seu CD “My Favourite Game”, faixa de “Gran Turismo”, quarto álbum da banda sueca The Cardigans, da lindíssima vocalista Nina Persson.

O álbum deve chegar às lojas no primeiro semestre de 2010.
