One of my greatest friends is Joe. I’ve mentioned him before. He’s someone special.

And he’s also kind of this blog’s watchdog. When I miss a day (or three), or post something subpar, Joe’s the first one to let me know, whether through a scathing comment on a particular post, a verbal tirade on GMail chat, or an obscenity-laden phone call. Most of these responses center on his annoyance with the fact I call this the daily euneJeune, and I’m not exactly stringent about the whole “daily” thing.

I love it. Because it comes from Joe and he’s one of the few people out there in the world who knows me very well, and wants to be my friend anyway.

Also, Joe and I have two things in common: (a) We’re able to drink more alcohol than any two people at any bar anywhere, and (b) We’re most likely the funniest people you’ll ever meet. And, no, the alcohol has nothing to do with why we think we’re a goddam riot. Although it doesn’t hurt.

In any case, Joe and I have this routine of exchanging late night texts, mainly because each of us know the other is most likely awake and not sober. 99% of the texts’ subject material has to do with movie quotes. And of that 99%, probably 98% deal directly with the obscure black comedy, Clifford, starring Charles Grodin and Martin Short.

→ As we all knew it would, Antarctica has declared war on New Zealand. Tired of living in the shadow of its more “tourist-friendly” neighbor, the frozen wasteland has launched hundreds of icebergs in a desperate attempt to get some headlines. Some experts are saying it’s not an attack at all and probably has something to do with global warming. Other experts are saying there’s too much ice in Antarctica and it’s natural to jettison some of the dead weight. The same experts also suggested people get off global warming’s back. However, all the experts agree the iceberg assault will have little effect on New Zealand, prompting a disheartened Antarctica to go back to the drawing board.

→ Finally, MTV makes a show I would actually watch  – about a squad of young Italian summertime renters at the Jersey shore – cleverly titled “Jersey Shore,” and wouldn’t you know it? There’s a group of Italian-Americans that wants to block it. Of course.

→ No new posts until Monday. What with the holiday and all. Also, be careful out there tonight. It’s the biggest bar night of the year. And drunk idiots make it suck pretty hard. Just take the following advice: Make sure to drive fast and take chances. OK. It’s not really advice.

Next week marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. On November 10, 1969 Jim Henson’s creations brought their brand of teaching kids how to count and learn the alphabet. Sesame Street has the esteemed honor of being the longest running children’s program on US television.

To help ring in their 40th season, Sesame Street has enlisted the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christina Applegate, Kobe Bryant and Nancy O’Dell.

Then on November 10th children’s television longest running program Sesame Street is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a brand new program format and two new books. Over 30 stars will be in the shows this coming year including Cameron Diaz, Michelle Obama, Adam Sandler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kobe Bryant, Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Ricky Gervais, and Greg Kinnear.

Courage is the word of the day.

Picked up the recent issue of Women’s Health Magazine while at the airport the other day. It is one of my favourite magazines available at newsstands. It doesn’t make me want to scream like FASHION magazines do. Of course, since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, they profiled Christina Applegate. She has a pretty extraordinary story and I can’t even imagine taking the steps she did once discovering breast cancer at age 37 (yes that’s right – 37 years old).

One of the best stories in the mag is the exclusive interview with First Lady Michelle Obama. Go read it. Whatever your politics are, one thing is certain: Michelle Obama is going to leave a very impressive mark on the world. She has the character of someone like Eleanor Roosevelt and I greatly admire that.

Another courageous individual I came upon recently – Anna Grace. This remarkably talented little girl is using her musicality to spread a little joy and inspire people to protect the planet.

     Well-known actresses; Christina Applegate, Brooke Shields, and Tiffani Thiessen along with heart-throb “Twilight” actor, Kellar Lutz, sign the “Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare” petition called “Animals Matter to Me.” Supermodel Joanna Krupa also joins the list of stars throwing support behind the WSPA in raising awareness about animal welfare issues. The petition endorses a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, which urges adoption of an international agreement on the welfare of animals by the United Nations.

     The mainstream entertainment industry support brings vital attention to animal issues on a worldwide scale. We need to join the WSPA and Hollywood celebrities to promote global recognition that animals do matter. They can feel pain and suffering from abuse and neglect. We as thinking, feeling human-beings need to make it a priority to end animal cruelty everywhere in the world. We all must show support by signing the “Animals Matter to Me” petition at www.animalsmatterusa.org.

     World Animal Week is at a close, but we can still let the United Nations know that we understand the importance of all animal welfare. We have a responsibility to our animals whether they are companion animals in the home, or animals that supply crucial labor assisting families to survive and prosper. Animals matter to all of us.

     Over 1000 welfare groups in 150 countries have helped the WSPA build the world’s largest alliance devoted to ending animal suffering. Through its unique partnerships and programs, the WSPA promotes animal welfare concerns on a worldwide scale. This happens to all of my favorite shows. It started with Daria, then Freaks and Geeks, then American Dreams, then Arrested Development, then Swingtown, then Hole in the Wall, and now this.

With ABC’s recent cancelation of Samantha Who? I am left scavenging the syndicated clips of Married with Children from afternoon cable programming for my Christina Applegate fix.

Christina Applegate is best known for her roles as ditzy blondes like Kelly of Married with Children; but based on movies like Don’t tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, where Applegate’s summer is ruined after she hides the death of her babysitter and she is left to raise her siblings herself all break. She supports the ungrateful crew by lying her way to the top of a big design company, ala Michael J. Fox in The Secret of my Success, I know she is more than the quintessential early ’90s airhead.

Seeing Applegate’s genuine and flawless performance in Sweet Charity on Broadway in 2005 confirmed it for me, Christina Applegate is one of the greatest gifts television has given the American public. Miss Applegate, I miss your eternal gum gnawing, your glamour shots female mullet and your avant-garde problem solving skills.

I just knew that Christina Applegate also had an early stage of cancer…  These are her interview with Oprah about her choice and battle againts cancer… Interesting..

As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, Christina says she’s been vigilant about getting regular mammograms since she was 30 years old. In 2007, doctors recommended extra precautions. “My doctor said that the mammograms weren’t enough for me because of the denseness of my breasts,” she says. “He suggested that I get an MRI.”

Christina went in for her first MRI screening, which produced disturbing results. “They found some funky things going on [in one breast],” she says. Doctors told her they needed to perform a biopsy. Then, the excruciating waiting game began.

Christina continued to work and promote her sitcom, but the impending results were never far from her mind. A week later she says she got the phone call every woman dreads. “[The doctor said], ‘It came back positive,’” she says. “Right now I’m sitting here shaking remembering that moment.”

Doctors explained that the cancer was only in her left breast, and thankfully, they caught it at an early stage. Christina says she held back her tears and immediately went into survival mode.

The day after her diagnosis, Christina says she went in to see an oncologist and a surgeon. “I’m a Sagittarius,” she says. “We need things done now. So, for me, I had to get in now, and I wanted to have my surgery now.”

Within a week, Christina had her first lumpectomy. Doctors also did a biopsy of her lymph nodes to make sure the cancer hadn’t spread. Since the cancer was caught early on, Christina was told she’d need six weeks of radiation instead of chemotherapy.

Then, she received more life-changing news. A test for the BRCA gene—also known as the “breast cancer gene”—came back positive. “That sort of changed everything for me,” she says. “Radiation was something temporary, and it wasn’t addressing the issue of this coming back or the chance of it coming back in my left breast. I sort of had to kind of weigh all my options at that point.”

Christina was given two options…go forward with the radiation treatments and continue testing for the rest of her life or have both breasts removed.

Christina made the dramatic decision to have a bilateral mastectomy. “It came on really fast. It was one of those things that I woke up and it felt so right,” she says. “It just seemed like, ‘I don’t want to have to deal with this again. I don’t want to keep putting that stuff in my body. I just want to be done with this.’ … I was just going to let them go.”

Before she went in for her surgery, Christina says she staged her first—and last—nude photo shoot. “I made sure that I have close-up photographs of them from every angle so I can kind of remember them,” she says.

Christina’s tears finally spilled over the day she met her surgeon. “I met with my doctor, and I told him that was my decision,” she says. “He brought the surgeon in, and it was like it was the floodgates just opened up and I lost it.”

In July 2008, Christina went through with the surgery, which has left physical and emotional scars. “It can be very painful,” she says. “It’s also a part of you that’s gone, so you go through a grieving process and a mourning process.”

Before she went under the knife, Christina says the only mastectomy she’d ever seen was the one her mother received. “[Her surgery] was in the ’70s, and they didn’t do a very good job back then,” she says. “So in my own mind I’m thinking, ‘My God, I’m going to be butchered, and it’s going to be horrible. I’m never going to love that part of me again.’ … But I did a lot of research, and they can make some pretty boobies.”

Currently, Christina says she has saline expanders in her body, which will make way for the new implants. Though she’s proud of her proactive decision, she says she’s reminded of her loss every day.

“It doesn’t feel the same, and it’s hard to carry your purse,” she says. “I cry at least once a day about it because it’s hard to overlook it when you’re standing there in the mirror. When you look down, it’s the first thing you see. … So you’re reminded constantly of this thing—this cancer thing that you had.”

On the bright side, Christina says she won’t have to wear a bra ever again. She also feels victorious in the fight against breast cancer. “I have taken a very progressive stance in the rest of my life,” she says. “For that, I’m really grateful.”

Days after her diagnosis, Christina says she reached out to family and friends, including Melissa Etheridge, a Grammy winner and breast cancer survivor. Melissa shared the lessons she learned during the fight for her own life.

“The first thing she said to me is: ‘Christina, this is a blessing that’s happened to you in your life. Right now, you get to start over, and right now you get to change everything—the way that you deal with things in life, the way that you react to things. Fear can hurt you. Stress can hurt you. This is the time that you have this opportunity to change the way you eat…everything you do,’” Christina says.

Christina now looks at her health scare as a blessing. “I am a 36-year-old person with breast cancer, and not many people know that that happens to women my age or women in their 20s,” she says. “This is my opportunity now to go out and fight as hard as I can for early detection.”

As she’s learned, early detection may not come from a mammogram. Christina says she will fight for women to have access to MRIs and genetic testing, which many insurance companies won’t pay for.

Christina says her health scare has shifted her priorities completely. “[There's] this need and this desire to make every single day count,” she says. “I used to say … ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff—not even the big stuff.’ At the end of the day, none of it matters but your own joy, your own spiritual journey that you go on, God, your loved ones, your friends, your animals. These are the things you’ve got to cherish and love and embrace.”

How do I know this? Because she said it on her Twitter. Duh. Everything happens on Twitter.

Candy will be turned into a movie.  Stephanie Pratt has already decided who she’d like to play her in the film.  Ironically enough, when we read the book, we didn’t peg a Stephanie-type character.  Steph, do you think you may have to wait for the sequel for your character to appear?

“I would probably say Queen Latifah. I love her. I really love her,” she told MTV News back in August.  MTV told Stephanie that producers tend to want to get actors who are somewhat similar to the real life character they’re based on, for some odd reason.  ”Someone more in my age … does that mean Christina Applegate is too old to play me too?
