Yeah, turkey day! Gobble, gobble, gobble! Macys Parade! Lets all gather around the table and give thanks before shoving our faces with food ’til our stomachs explode! Yay!

In reality we…. well you–’cause I’m not–are celebrating the bloody massacre of hundreds of Native Americans at the hands of the evil Pilgrims! Yay!

Don’t believe me? Here’s my pre-teen eternal crush Wednesday Adams, as embodied by the amazing Christina Ricci (how I hated David Krumholtz for he got to kiss her in the movie!), explaining it all in harrowing details and staging a rightful revenge fantasy.

Take that Pilgrims!

CLICK FOR TRAILER

What?

Johnny Depp is Ichabod Crane, an eccentric investigator determined to stop the murderous Headless Horseman. Christina Ricci is Katrina Van Tassel, the beautiful and mysterious girl with secret ties to the supernatural terror…

Where?

My hotel room in Fuerteventura

With?

Technically with the girlfriend, but she was asleep.

Why?

It was a movie that completely passed me by on its initial release…and DVD release…and every time it was on TV. So I figure I should give it a shout, no doubt it will be filled with the typical Burton-isms but you can usually rely in Depp putting in a decent performance.

Worth It?

Well it took up 100 minutes of dead time, and I don’t remember not liking it whilst watching it. Yet, it wasn’t what I would call memorable, to the point that I finished watching it about 40 minutes ago and I’ve already forgotten a lot of it.

As usual, Depp was pretty good albeit restrained, and the rest of the cast didn’t do a bad job. Apart from Casper Van Dien, but then I can’t blame him too much considering he lacks any acting ability anyway.

The gore was good, Walken was great, and the film was fairly forgettable. Definitely a Sunday afternoon post-roast movie.

Pénélope Pénélope nait dans une famille aristocratique sur laquelle plane une malédiction. L’a

Sleepy Hollow is a 1999 period horror film directed by Tim Burton. Based on the Washington Irving story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the film stars Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Sir Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Casper Van Dien, Jeffrey Jones, Ian McDiarmid, Michael Gough, Richard Griffiths and Christopher Walken. The story centers on police constable Ichabod Crane sent from New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village Sleepy Hollow by a mysterious Headless Horseman. The style and themes of the story take inspirations from the late Hammer Film Productions.

Sleepy Hollow had been in development since 1994 and was originally intended to be directed by Kevin Yagher. The film labored into development far enough for Burton, who had unsuccessfully worked on Superman Lives, to direct. The majority of the filming took place in England where the crew built an entire soundstage. Sleepy Hollow would be released with box office success and critical acclaim, grossing roughly $206 million worldwide and scoring a 73 percent approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Trivia:

The scene where Ichabod Crane crosses the covered bridge and hears the frogs underneath croaking “Ichabod” and “Headless Horseman” is a tribute to Disney’s 1958 animated version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1958) (featured in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)), in which Ichabod Crane, crossing a bridge, hears the frogs croaking the same words. Director Tim Burton, a former Disney animator, has cited the Disney version of the tale as his main inspiration for the look and style of his film. The scene of Ichabod Crane riding the Horseman’s horse backwards is also taken from the earlier film.

Christopher Walken, who plays the Headless Horseman, played a schoolteacher in The Dead Zone (1983), in the beginning of which he tells his class to read “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

Johnny Depp

The town Sleepy Hollow was created from the ground up in three months. At the time of filming, it was the largest set built in England and was put up in record time. The last set that held this record was built for Billy Elliot (2000).

The Western Wood was built on a sound-stage so everything, the weather, light, could be controlled.

The Windmill was too large to be constructed on a sound-stage because it was over five stories high. The sails alone weighed over 2 tons.

The final chase sequence on the coach in the Western Wood took three weeks to film.

The Horseman’s horse is named Daredevil, the same name of Brom Bones’ (Brom Van Brunt’s) horse in Irving’s original short story; the horse was purchased in Seville, Spain.

Christopher Walken’s character has no speaking lines, aside from a couple of “HAA”s to his horse and “shhhh.”

Director Trademark: [Tim Burton] [scarecrows]

This was originally to be a Kevin Yagher directorial project. Tim Burton later took over the project, with Kevin Yagher remaining on with co-producing credits among others.

Christina Ricci

The dress worn by Katrina Anne Van Tassel (Christina Ricci) in the last shot of the movie has the same pattern as Michael Keaton’s outfit in the climactic scene of Beetle Juice (1988) also directed by Tim Burton.

Tim Burton and the crew of the movie built the small town Sleepy Hollow complete with rooms, floors, and stairs. The town was dismantled after filming was completed.

Historically, Ichabod Crane was a very unattractive man. Johnny Depp wanted to add prosthetics to his face to make himself look ugly, but Tim Burton wanted to base the character on Crane’s more unattractive personality traits – his reported squeamishness and eccentricity.

According to Tim Burton, the opening shots of Peter Van Garrett were shot by Conrad L. Hall, who was a friend of the film’s director of photography, Emmanuel Lubezki.

Star Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, the horse that played Gunpowder, Ichabod Crane’s horse in the film, when he heard it was going to be put down.

While Tim Burton admired Andrew Kevin Walker’s original script, he hired the famed playwright and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tom Stoppard as script doctor. Stoppard did an uncredited re-write to tone down the violence of Walker’s script.

Ichabod Crane faints six times in the movie.

At the start of filming the three-way axe battle with Ray Park, Johnny Depp and Casper Van Dien, Casper Van Dien broke the index finger of his left hand. Although extremely painful, he carried on without telling anyone as he didn’t want his part cut short.

Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel were, reportedly, real people

Winona Ryder was offered the role of Katrina Van Tassel, but turned it down.

A mechanical horse, an updated model of one used in earlier films, was used for studio shots. The mechanical horse was originally developed for riding scenes with Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet (1944).

Johnny Depp did all of his own stunts for the final scene where he is dragged by the horse – he had bullet-proof clothing underneath his wardrobe.

This film features three sith lords from the Star Wars prequels, Ray Park (Darth Maul), Christopher Lee (Count Dooku ) and Ian McDiarmid (Darth Sidious).

During the last scene Ichabod, during his explanation to Katrina and Young Masbeth of how easy New York is to navigate, says, “The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down.” This is a line from the song “New York, New York” which is featured in the movie On the Town (1949).

Casper Van Dien in real life is related to the Van Tassels (Christina Ricci’s character’s family; she is his love interest in the film).

Casper Van Dien gained 30 pounds for his role of Brom.

The production notes on the DVD reveal that Johnny Depp based his characterization on the late Roddy McDowall (Fright Night (1985)), Angela Lansbury (The Mirror Crack’d (1980)) and Basil Rathbone (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) and others).

Liam Neeson, Brad Pitt and Daniel Day-Lewis were all considered for the role of Ichabod Crane.

Marlon Brando was sought as The Hessian Horseman.

Although the headless horsemen in the books and fairy tales is physically not allowed to cross the bridge, as it is known as a safe haven for the characters, in this version he can cross it freely.

Michael Gough came out of retirement to play Notary Hardenbrook.

Although Tim Burton claims the windmill scene was a reference to Frankenstein (1931), which he lovingly quoted in Frankenweenie (1984), a stronger link can be made to Will Hay’s Oh, Mr. Porter! (1937) which also featured a windmill but not a headless horseman.

This was the very last movie produced on laserdisc anywhere in the world.

During the promotional interviews for the film, Johnny Depp gave Sir Michael Gambon the ‘task’ of mentioning Claudia Schiffer’s knickers in every press interview. According to Gambon, when interviewed on BBC “Top Gear” (1978), he succeeded easily. Mind you, Gambon admitted that he lies in all interviews, so this may not be true after all!

Johnny Depp reportedly has never seen the film because he didn’t like the way he acted in the film.

The gown of patterned gray muslin worn by Jessica Oyelowo (Sarah) is the same costume worn by Billie Piper (Fanny Price) during the play rehearsal scene in Mansfield Park (2007) (TV), and by Thandie Newton (Sally Hemings) in Jefferson in Paris (1995). Sally’s gown is made from the fabric selected by Thomas Jefferson and Mrs. Cosway.

The last live action film of Michael Gough.

Johnny Depp initially wanted to play the character with a long prosthetic snipe nose, huge ears and elongated fingers, although his suggestions were turned down by Paramount Pictures as they felt the design to be too outrageous.

The cast and crew often said “The feeling one had walking around Sleepy Hollow’s sets, and in particular the town at Lime Tree, was almost as if you were walking around the inside of [Tim] Burton’s head.”

In the novel, the Headless Horseman was a man who lost his head from a cannon blast in an unknown battle of the American Revolutionary War.

This is the first adaption of Sleepy Hallow that doesn’t involve the actor of the headless horseman having to conceal their head in the cloak. Rather, to fit with the technology, the head of the actor is replaced with a blue screen mask and a CGI collar to match the flow of the robe.

If you haven’t already, you should check out this post by T. aka Ricky Raw, in which he skewers the recent “poverty porn” flick Precious. This passage struck me in particular:

I watched it in a predominately black theatre, and many of the scenes the audience was laughing or cheering at were disturbingly inappropriate, and much of that seemed deliberate based on how over-the-top the subject matter was presented.

Has anyone else noticed this trend of people laughing or cheering at movie scenes that are supposed to make the viewer feel uncomfortable? Two years ago, I saw Black Snake Moan, a film in the same exploitative vein as Precious, only focused on poor rural whites as opposed to poor blacks. During one pivotal scene in which the main character, played by Christina Ricci, physically assaults her mother with a shovel, some asshole two rows behind me was hollering hysterically through the whole thing. It was just one jerkoff, though, so I forgot about it at the time.

It happened again when I saw Watchmen, where a good third of the audience was driven to hysterics and cheering during the scene in which the Comedian attempts to rape the Silk Spectre. The film was already making me nauseous (the only movie that had ever done that to me), and watching the audience cheering on rape, violence, and brutality almost made me walk out out of sheer anger and disgust. I frankly wanted to take every single one of those faux-macho, hairy-palmed comic book geekazoids out in the backyard and beat the shit out of them, given them the beating their fathers should have given them. I managed to sit through the rest of Watchmen without starting any fights, but the dark, nihilistic gestalt of the film combined with the sick audience reaction put me in a deep depression. I spent the rest of that night in a dejected mood, drinking bourbon and watching Nostalgia Critic videos.

Has anyone else seen this phenomenon and been similarly repulsed?

November 15, 2009

Such a great weekend. Lisa’s party was so lovely. Her book is beautiful, the hardback and the paperback with its French flaps. Her poetry is lyrical and imaginative. The chocolate room was as romantic as a weekend in Paris. It was delicate and eggs with chocolate, truffles and cupcakes. It was the like the inside of the kind of room you wanted to go into as a child but you weren’t allowed. But here, you were. Allowed. In. Invited. A room you could walk into like entering a perfect egg. I loved this party. It was amazing.

Today I recovered a bit and spent time with my daughter who was visiting with her girlfriend. They were painting a room green. We don’t have a style or a reason for anything in our house, but there was a paint sale on green and it matched the green scarf I often wear when I go by that room. I feel pretty good about that room being green. We maybe will put a green candle in there. Hopefully there will be a sale on green candles. Problem is we have two writers staying with us and that room is not ready, so one will stay in my writing room and one in the sun room. Awkward. On the couch. We’ll apologize.

We’re thinking about prescription drug use and its overuse because we’re watching this movie Prozac Nation about these kids at Harvard. Harvard, how does anyone get privileged enough to go there? I don’t even know. Great Lou Reed music and Christina Ricci and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are so beautiful and ardent.

It’s very hard for me to understand depression. Elizabeth Wurtzell went to Harvard Sylvia Plath to Smith. They were very fortunate in many ways, yet they were clinically depressed. Being depressed doesn’t have a lot to do with how lucky you’ve been, it has to do with how you feel. Elizabeth Wurtzell was fired for plagiarism from the Dallas Morning News and she failed the bar exam, that’s the bad thing about being famous, all this stuff is on the internet. I like that Wikipedia says that she had a history of therapy and suicide attempts. I like how those two got wrapped up together.

A lot of people that I know are in therapy. My mother-in-law told me once when I had tried therapy for a few short weeks, not to tell anyone. Then I quit that therapy. It was a short lived thing, but as I said I’ve only been in therapy maybe 6 weeks of my whole life, but most people I know have been in therapy for years and years. They aren’t well even now, but they continue. Here is the thing with long term therapy. Like plastic surgery, if I saw someone with plastic surgery who looked 40 but was actually 70, I would think, sure, I’ll try it. But that hasn’t happened.

My friends in years of therapy don’t seem any healthier than I do. Well, that isn’t really saying much. This is such a sad movie. It’s a movie about a very mean person, it makes me want to read the book. In the movie, the narrator seems completely cruel to her friends, to her mother, to her boyfriend; she is so horribly self absorbed that you cannot like anything about her, you cannot feel sorry for her. The narrator takes Prozac, although it hasn’t been clearly determined to the audience that she is really depressed. She just seems like a person with no conscience; she’s just mean. I know people like this, there’s someone at my work like that. I assume most people have someone at their work who is mean for no reason.

In 2005 27 million Americans were using antidepressants according to USA Today. The idea according to the movie is that the Prozac covers up your problems so that you don’t have to deal with them. What exactly do Americans have to be so depressed about, you might ask? We are the richest nation on earth, and yet, we take the most anti-depressants. I wouldn’t want to be a therapist, or a psychiatrist and decide if people should be taking drugs or not. Some people need antidepressants. Absolutely. But as a nation, do 27 million of us need them? I don’t know. Hard to say. This was one slow movie, like watching a caterpillar become a butterfly. It felt like it took all summer, but in the end there really wasn’t a butterfly. Our narrator was still mean, but she was a mean writer. And, in my particular profession as an editor, it isn’t like I’ve never had a chance to meet one of them. But, at least she’s honest.

Tomorrow our event at the Geffen Playhouse. It’s going to be great. I look forward to seeing you there. Marc Acito, Annie La Ganga and Lionel Rolfe reading and discussing their work in one of the most beautiful spaces in Los Angeles.

There is nothing I love more than introducing people to the Hollywood gems that they somehow missed

There is nothing I love more than introducing people to the Hollywood gems that they somehow missed while growing up. Today, it was Heathers (1989). As I basked in the artistic genius of Winona Ryder I realized that her once over exposed face has been missing from tabloids and from mainstream movies for years.

Sure, this could be because studios are still cautious about hiring a shoplifter to promote their work, but bitch please that was way back in 2001. The world was a different place and she was still young and impressionable. It’s hard to pay for things when you are used to getting them for free.

Winona has been in the public eye since her early teens in the late ‘80s with movies like Lucas (1986) and Edward Scissorhands (1990); typically playing angsty teens, wannabe nuns, and sexually deviant liars. For the best of Winona I suggest you witness her genius in Mermaids (1990) with Christina Ricci and the great Cher. In Mermaids, Ryder wants to be a nun in order to depress her mother, unfortunately she is Jewish and fighting a colossal infatuation for Michael Schoeffling, better known to girls as Jake Ryan of Sixteen Candles(1984).

Currently Ryder is planning a comeback. She is scheduled to star in Black Swan (2009) currently in pre-production. Lord knows A Scanner Darkly (2006) did nothing but bury her career even deeper into its grave.

Winona, I miss the way you read your diary entries out loud, how you constantly critique “the Man” and your use of the five finger discount.

Winona Ryder, I miss your face- Shassie

The films listed bel0w are some of my favourites. They’re really a mixture of both horror and horror comedy. I don’t know many people who don’t like to watch movies, though there are some and so this list is definitely for the movie lover. You may find it useful if you ever find yourself at a loose end one night and can’t decide what to watch. Thanks for reading.

1)-The Monster Squad (1987) Smashing little film directed by Fred Dekker. Though it now has a cult following, there aren’t enough people who’ve heard of this gem. A group of kids are in a ‘Monster Club’ and have to save the world from the combined evil of Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, The amphibious Gill Man and initially Frankenstein’s Monster. Watch for a very deep moment when the kids encounter ‘Scary German Guy’.

2)-The Lost Boys (1987) Great vampire flick. New kids in town Michael and Sam move with their recently divorced mother, Lucy, to Santa Carla ‘The Murder Capital of the World’, due to the town’s vampire problem. Michael soon encounters David and the other ‘lost boys’ who are all vampires, before finally having to take them down along with the head vampire, Max. A classic which has not diminished with age. However, avoid like the plague the extremely poor sequel Lost Boys: The Tribe, which I wasn’t even able to watch in one sitting. A third film is in progress.

3)-Halloween (1978) John Carpenter directs the film which was the first in a long line of ’slasher’ films. Teenager Laurie Strode begins to see a sinister looking man clad in a white mask around her hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois. Soon she and her friends are being stalked and killed by this masked menace, who was revealed in later films to be Laurie’s brother, the deranged and evil psychopath Michael Myers. The film spawned 7 sequels and 2 remakes (Rob Zombies Halloween and Halloween 2), none of which were as succesful as the first.

4)-Friday 13th (1980) Counsellors at the Camp Crystal Lake Summer camp get stalked and slain in a variety of gruesome ways in this independent film directed by Sean S. Cunningham. Though not appearing in this film the later 10 sequels would introduce and feature the hockey masked serial killer Jason Voorhees. The original is still the best, though a few of the sequels had their good points. The saga went all the way to part 10, Jason X (Jason in outer space), before relaunching again in a remade Friday 13th.

5)-The Wicker Man (1973) Avoid the pointless, and abysmal, remake starring Nicholas Cage, the original is definitely the best. Police Sergeant Neil Howie arrives on the island of Summerisle, off the west coast of Scotland after recieving reports of the disappearance of one of the islanders, a young girl by the name of Rowan Morrison. Howie soon suspects foul play and becomes determined to discover what happened to the young girl while fighting off the buxom charms of a young Britt Ekland. However the truth is far more sinister as Howie realises he has been lured into a trap. Shocking ending that still shocks today.

6)-The Fog (1980) another John Carpenter classic, later subjected to an awful remake. The sleepy seaside town of Antonio Bay in California is preparing to celebrate its centennial anniversary. However, dead sailors lured to their doom on the rocks of the bay a century ago in order for the townsfolk to steal their gold, have now returned from their watery graves, hell-bent on seeking revenge.

7)-The Addams Family (1991) Genuinely good quality and humorous film spin-off from the black & white television series of the 1960s. Gomez and Morticia Addams (Raul Julia and Anjelica Houston) live together in their spooky Gothic mansion with Morticia’s mother, their two children Pugsley and Wednesday, the butler Lurch and a disembodied hand called ‘Thing’. However despite domestic bliss Gomez has a heavy heart over the years-ago disappearance of his brother Fester. But then, in the middle of a storm, Fester reappears. But, all is not quite as it seems. The success of this film made way for a sequel, Addams Family Values in 1993, which is just as good as its predecessor.

8)-Silver Bullet (1985) A truly creepy example of a werewolf film. The sleepy town of Tarker’s Mills, Maine, is given a chilling wake-up call when a werewolf goes on the rampage and slaughters several of the townsfolk before being defeated by young paraplegic Marty (Corey Haim). The film is narrated from the point of view of Jane, who is Marty’s older sister and feels burdened by the extra care that he needs due to his disability. A great film equalled perhaps only by other fine films in the genre such as ‘An American Werewolf in London’ (1981) and ‘The Howling’ (1981)

9)-Death Becomes Her (1992) Black comedy starring the talents of Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis. As the film opens ageing Broadway star Madeline Ashton is preparing for the opening of her new show ‘Sweet Bird of Youth’ however the play is panned and afterwards in her dressing room Ashton receieves a visit from her sad, frumpy friend and rival, writer Helen Sharp (Hawn). Helen is engaged to Dr Ernest Menville (Willis) and has come to share the good news with Ashton. However when Madeline steals him away from her, Helen’s life falls apart. Years later Ernest and Madeline, now unhappily married, are invited to a book party thrown by Helen to celebrate the launch of her book ‘Forever Young’. When they arrive Madeline sees Helen who is slim, youthful and succesful, everything Madeline is not. Soon though Madeline discovers the secret to Helen’s seeming eternal youth and then the fun really begins.

10)-Fright Night (1985) Great vampire film which was a sleeper-hit at the box office, becoming the second highest grossing horror film of 1985. Charlie Brewster lives with his mother in a typical suburban neighbourhood. That all changes one night when he sees two men carrying a coffin into the basement of the empty old house next door. When young women start turning up dead Charlie is convinced that the man next door, Jerry Dandridge, is responsible and is a vampire. At first he has trouble getting anyone to believe him, least of all his girlfriend Amy Petersen and ‘Evil’ Ed Thompson. They even rope in ageing horror film star and late night television host Peter Vincent in an effort to convince Charlie his suspicions about Mr Dandridge are unfounded. However, Charlie is quite correct about Jerry as the others are soon to discover. The film grossed $24,922,237 (£15,086,034.86) at the US box office alone. A decent sequel, Fright Night 2, was released in 1988. In it the sister of Jerry Dandridge, Regine, seeks revenge on Charlie Brewster and Peter Vincent for the death of her brother.
