I know this sounds like an odd question, but with birthday, weddings, and the holidays coming up, this question struck me. Or maybe it was the holiday decorations up in a few places that prompted this thought.

I haven’t been big on gifts for about the last ten years or so. I think this started when I was married. I would really think about the person, their hobbies, etc., then find something they would like. I was often told I was a great gift giver. I can’t answer if that is true or not, but I sure tried. On the other hand, I would get things that seemed completely incongruent with who I am and wonder, why doesn’t my family know me enough to realize that I wouldn’t like a putter? I haven’t golfed since college with any regularity nor much desire. (By the way, this specific scenario never happened, but is reminiscent of a similar gift giving situation). This isn’t about being grateful or ungrateful – we all appreciate the gifts we receive.

To me the question is more about time and love. Instead of gifts, why not share your time doing things you love to do together? Why not take a trip. Or see a play. Or go to a museum. Or host a party. Or go to a wine tasting. Or go to a concert. Or go to Jazz on the Green. There a ton of things you can do to show that you care and instead of giving a trinket that will be forgotten, share some time and maybe an event together. The ultimate gift: make it a celebration and create a memory. There will still be times that a gift is more appropriate but in those times it isn’t, why not try it another way and see what happens?

I went to Michael’s last week for some mats and frames for my photographs. I was dismayed to see that all of their Halloween stuff is out already. Halloween? Seriously? It’s not even Labor Day yet! I also saw a whole aisle stacked high with boxes of Christmas stuff. That was even more depressing. I love Christmas, but I’m not ready to even think about Christmas for another three months yet.

One of my friends pointed out that a craft store like Michael’s is of course going to put out holiday stuff many months before the holiday in question. Craft projects can take awhile and there are probably many people who spend the entire fall working on Christmas crafts. But you know what? It’s not just Michael’s. Mark my words, we’ll start seeing Christmas stuff in the regular stores in September. Who needs to buy lights, ornaments, and decorations four months in advance? I’m saddened by our consumerist culture, especially around the holidays.

The last Harry Potter book’s ending sucked, I felt bad reading it because I don’t remember anything after the fourth book. It was really sappy (I mean come on, Albus Severus???? COME ON). Maybe Rowling got sick and decided to throw up sunshiny fairytale happiness on the last pages. gross

Yay I got a new phone. No more random missed calls and alarms not going off!

Sylvia, in regards to the ‘christma’ incident: Ok fine maybe I did misspell it, but while the internet was puttering along as I was publishing it, I tried to type in an ’s’ and failed. The intrawebs was too slow so I left it to correct later when I was not on the verge of smashing my laptop into the ground and yelling “WHY ISN’T THERE FREE INTERNET EVERYWHERE, WHY MUST I LEECH OFF SURROUNDING HOUSES LIKE SOMETHING IN THE LEECH FAMILY.” But since you pointed it out, I can’t change it because that is cowardly. I don’t know why, but it is in some way.

Found real love for Trader Joe’s. Yeah its a grocery store. But we won free stuff and ate a lot at the feeding trough – I mean sampling station. The people who work there are strangely energetic and yet, I find myself inexplicably drawn to this grocery store.

I inadvertently somehow destroyed my hard drive. Nooo! Not all my contraband and photos and TAMS downloaded episodes of Bleach that I saved since the TAMS era! Nooooooooo!

Something’s off when the tag has harry potter and grocery stores in the same post.

“Hello, this is OnStar, how may I save you, my child?”

Tired of annual Jesus-jacking, a Florida community has decided to fight back by installing GPS on the main players of the nativity scene. The extra security was the only step available, since bolting down the statues last year still allowed someone to whisk away the tiny Savior with amazing grace. Jesus won’t be the only one tracked wherever he goes; Mary and Joseph will also have those silent blinks in the night. The top holiday celebrity family also will have a plexiglas wall separating them from the riffraff, just in case. No word yet on whether Britney’s former bodyguard will be available to Mary, Little J and J-Pa, but Santa might want to take notice; he’s not the only one who can know if you’re bad or good, or if you’ve been spirited away for a holiday trip to the islands.

The NFL Network has decided to simulcast the Patriots-Giants game this Saturday on NBC and CBS in ad

The NFL Network has decided to simulcast the Patriots-Giants game this Saturday on NBC and CBS in addition to the NFL Network. The game is important because the Patriots are going for a perfect season, something not done since the 1972 Dolphins, who went 14-0. The Patriots would be the first to go 16-0. It’s exciting, but I find the details of how we got here interesting. My quick thoughts on it:

The NFL caved, despite saying they wouldn’t, by showing this game on free TV. So much for using this as leverage against the Cable companies.

This is good for football, but could be bad for the NFL Network. From what I’ve heard, their broadcasts are typically atrocious. I might watch and decide it’s a good thing I don’t have NFL Network at home.

What a shame to not have the best available broadcasters doing this historic game. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman of FOX get my vote, but Michaels and Madden (NBC) are close behind.

As we look forward to the final contest of the regular season, I’m reminded of Jesus’ birth. Jesus was born among us that he might pursue perfection Himself. He kept the Law of God perfectly, fulfilling it and taking the punishment that we deserved. In return, we receive His righteousness, forgiveness and eternal life. Praise God!

I’m back from my Christmas break, with lots of new DVDs to watch and not enough time… Sa

I’m back from my Christmas break, with lots of new DVDs to watch and not enough time… Sad, sad, sad.

In any case, we continued with Battlestar Galactica season 3 yesterday, watching “Exodus”, a double episode that ends life under Cylon occupation for the poor denizens of New Caprica. (Who’d have thunk, with a title like that?) The episode was exciting, with some fairly tough scenes in between – but the way they continued from “Precipice” was a disappointing cop-out.

Last thing we’d seen was Callie, running away after Jammer cut her restraints and told her to get out of there, and then we heard the sound of gunfire… Of course it was unlikely that the guns firing were actually the Cylon executioners cutting down, among others, Tom Zarek and Laura Roslin. It was unlikely that they’d kill both of them off in one fell swoop lifted more or less directly from The Great Escape. But they completely cheated with continuity and editing – when “Exodus” part 1 finally arrives at the scene, it’s plain to see that a) Callie isn’t running next to bushes or trees and b) by the time the guns start firing, she’s already been thrown to the ground by Chief Tyrol. There’s only one thing to say to such blatant cheating:

“HE DIDN’T GET OUT OF THE COCKADOODIE CAR!”

Anyway… While the episode fumbled on that one, it was very strong on characterisation. Especially Starbuck and Tigh get fantastic scenes. I never really liked Ellen Tigh as a character, finding her annoying more than anything else, but her last scene with Saul was quite heartbreaking; as was the expression on Kara’s face when she arrives on the Galactica with kiddo Kacey, whom she’s been made to believe is her daughter - and then Kacey’s real mother turns up, sees her child and takes it from Starbuck, crying and thanking her. You can almost see something inside Starbuck breaking.

It’ll be very interesting to see how (or indeed whether) the people who’ve escaped from New Caprica will re-integrate into life aboard the starship. Chances are there are fairly deep psychological scars, and it’s doubtful they’ll heal from one episode to the next.

P.S.: You gotta love Gaeta’s bitter quip to the quivering Baltar: “He believed in the dream of Gaius Baltar. The good life. Booze, pills, hot and cold running interns…”

Let me see what I got for christmas this year…..

I got a egg shaped digital clock, which I for the love of god cannot figure how to set the time and off the alarm. The instruction manual seems quite screwed. Probably takes an engineer to figure how to use it.

I got a bunch of driving theory books, from basic to advance. I got the point guys.

I got 2 Kamen Rider encyclopedias. Thanks Love

I got a whole bunch of chocolates and gingy

I got a pair of japanese chopsticks.

I got a Bart Simpson figurine bottle of body soap.

2 tee shirts. One of which is Hiro Nakamura

I got a USB cup warmer, from this girl, who gave me for last year’s Xmas, a USB cup warmer. Now I got 2. I kinda figured that she thinks its cold in Singapore , so if need be I can sit on them and warm my ass.

I have not been a good boy this year. Santa did not drop by. I wonder if he has been informed of my change of address. Either that or the rumours are true

Imperial Stormtroopers Arrest Santa, Emperor to take over Xmas

SANTA’S FACTORY, North Pole (Agencies) – An Imperial Stormtrooper commando broke into Santa’s Factory on the North Pole yesterday evening, killing an undetermined number of elves, arresting the owner and confiscating his sled. Joe Kwazansky, local spokesman for the Evil Galactic Empire in Los Angeles, appeared in a press conference this morning confirming the rumors of an Imperial takeover of Christmas’ celebrations. “The Emperor wants to assure His subjects that Xmas will continue as planned. The pug-nosed fatso, however, will pay for his crimes,” Mr. Kwazansky said amid the palpable shock in the press corps. Apparently, the arrest has occurred in connection with earlier reports on the manufacturing and stealth placement of Weapons of Mass Destruction:

Answering questions about the causes of this assault and Santa Claus’ detention, Mr. Kwazansky pointed out that Imperial Intelligence had proof of Santa’s production of WMDs at his factory located near the North Pole. “He is also a perv, you know,” he added, “a guy who goes around his house clad in red velvet and has underaged boys assisting him all day long. Illegal sex? Forced labor? You gotta be kidding. We have the patent on forced labor too. Ask the wookies.”

Later in the press conference, Mr. Kwazansky, 48 years old and still living with his parents, revealed that Santa may have been stealing industrial secrets from Imperial-exclusive defense contractor Sienar Fleet Systems. “And what’s with the bloody flying reindeers anyway?” he said, “how the Force do they fly? I bet they have Twin Ion Engines up their butts. That’s classified technology, people. Fatso is finishing his days in the Great Pit of Carkoon, I tell you.” The spokesperson left the stage laughing maniacally, muttering something about how Santa was going to suffer for all those years of coal back at the Imperial Orphanage.

Commenting on the strike, UN’s North Pole representative Kalle Jugercømmandersson said that “we don’t understand this act of unprovoked agression. The North Pole has been weapons-free since 1959, when Timmy the Polar Bear was killed by a drunk seal using a 38.” Then, he started sobbing, crying “and we are not little boys! We are little grown men!” out loud.

Lord Darth Vader was unavailable to comment at the time of this report.

There is something about seeing through the eyes of a child. All the expectations and pretensions fall away. All the significance and reverence disappears. Only the moment (and the bright and shiny) remain. While my Adult Self cringed at the $500 in “educational toys” discarded for wrapping paper and ribbon, my True Self rejoices. Crackling paper and colourful ribbon should be more appealing to a 10 month old. Save the gadget lust for later.

It was Jack’s first Christmas. I read him the passages from the bible that described the event. I was struck by the brevity of the bible verses that had spawned such a significant holiday. I was struck by the exclusion of the atrocity of Herod from our modern myth of Christmas. The slaughter of innocents to preserve a kingdom, the Wise Men as unwitting spies, don’t fit well with the iconography of the birth of the Prince of Peace.

I was most impressed by my son’s focus on the simple things. Jack received the most pleasure from the fellowship of the season. He was most enthusiastic at the companionship that is the wellspring of the season. He drank his fill of the attention lavished on him by the friends and family we visited yesterday. And therein lies the Reason for the Season, no?
