It’s been a big year for London fashion.

They’ve got new It girls and top models (Georgia Jagger, Alexa Chung), London Fashion Week celebrated its 25th anniversary, welcoming home designers like Christopher Bailey, and the British Fashion Awards seems to be bigger than ever.

The BFA has collaborated with Grazia this year to launch a new style icon award, celebrating the fashion figure (from any part of the industry) who “most embodies the spirit of London…as a leading creative fashion capital.” At the Royal Courts of Justice tonight, one of 25 nominees — including Kate Moss, Alexander McQueen, Dame Vivienne Westwood, Anya Hindmarch, John Galliano, Pat McGrath and Hussein Chalayan — will be announced the winner.

And can you just not wait for the red carpet photos?

1) its gem of a super-duper multi-tasker, Christopher Bailey as its Chief Creative Officer (never before heard, and many times up from his previous position as Creative Director),
2) it just opened its first Burberry Brit and London stores in New York,
amongst many other exciting stuff.

but we just went through our stash of photos from the party, and we’re still reeling from the experience.

O no, we can’t let go, we’re pining in front of our autographed pictures of our Christopher Bailey. Are we hopeless fan girls, or what.

The site is a way for fans and fanatics to “interact with the culture of the brand and with the emotional aspects of the trenchcoat,” says designer Christopher Bailey. The site features a timeline which illustrates the history of the trench, but more fun is is impressive amount of pictures featuring people and their trenches and how diverse you can wear it. The pictures are a selection of pictures uploads by fans along with photos commissioned by online style guru the Sartorialist.

Christopher Bailey was obviously inspired by the military look, which is no surprise considering this winter is all about the military look. Everything looks so cleanly cut and well designed and I love the epaulets and other shoulder details, but with out it being over the top.

So here enjoy Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall -

Christopher Bailey, the man behind the magic at Burberry, must surely know a thing or two (or a thousand) about trenchcoats. The trench is arguably Burberry’s most notable and praised wardrobe item, setting precedence for other brands who can never quite match the subtle luxury that is presented with Burberry’s classic trenches. This season, Burberry looks to its past for inspiration, and brings the military into its current collection, along with many other blasts from the past. However, the looks are never outdated and are surprisingly modern and fresh for both HE and SHE.

Waterproof wool sounds like a perfect companion for winter weather, and the Victorian details, light silk dresses and earthy color scheme all make for a perfectly classic fall/winter collection.

Burberry Prorsum have unveiled a lovely little peek at their new menswear line for 2010. As you can probably tell military styling is a big influence – Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s CCO, has spoken of the new line:

Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey mined Burberry’s military heritage for the Prorsum pre-fall season with a battalion of weatherproof wool felt coats cinched with chunky belts, leather and shearling aviator jackets, and gabardine trenches. “This collection is anchored in history, and what you’re seeing is a roll-call of Burberry outerwear,” said the designer. “I love mixing different decades — but using modern fabrics.” He said the brand’s new social networking Web site, artofthetrench.com, got him thinking about the ways Burberry trenches have been worn over the years.

But there are soft edges, too, with Victorian elements, such as silk dresses overlaid with delicate lace and even lace-covered trenches. And Bailey easily brings hard and soft together: Wool sweaters have silky bow-shaped epaulets, while bows and ruffles take the edge off sharply tailored skirts and peplums add flourish to military-inspired suit jackets. Colors range from brooding dark greens and blacks to khaki and nude.

In an earlier post I mentioned my desire for a Burberry trenchcoat – having seen these designs I have to say I really want the very first one… far too cool for school. And too expensive for James, no doubt. Sigh….

I’m back after having spent 2 days in Berlin for…work. Wow, that was exciting! Kein leisure this time!

The Ritz-Carlton was hosting the Herald Tribune conference of the luxury industry in Berlin. This conference has been traditionally hosted in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo. But this year Suzy Menkes, the venerable fashion editor of Herald Tribune, picked Berlin because the flirt between luxury and technology is becoming something serious. And surely Milano, Paris or London felt a bit passé when it comes to technology.

It was kind of odd to talk luxury in Berlin, the anti-luxury town. Or the über-luxury town, if you think that a cleaner air, using the bike and nature at your doorstep are the real luxury now. But Suzy Menkes has antennas, and they are tuning in on new themes: technology, CSR. After all the New York Times offers one of the best online media experiences, we started to see during the US election campaign how its Lab was exploiting all the potential offered by multimedia and the mixture of graphic/text/photo/interactivity. Plus the US are pushing smart grids, greener technology: sign of the times. And Berlin is a good example of sticking to environmental commitments.

Technology + luxury is indeed an intriguing combination and the concentration of interesting speeches and conversations provided abundant food for thought. Not all contributions were equally interesting. Some speakers lost golden opportunities for sharing with the audience a deeper understanding of their approach to technology because they picked a standard, institutional presentation off the rack and delivered it without too much belief, thus lowering the momentum generated by lush video introductions. Or because they never answered to questions but just kept on pumping their message “we’re the best”. But they were just a couple of them. The majority of the speakers had prepared the material carefully, both conversation and multimedia content, has delivered the key messages with passion and answered in a candid way to Suzy Menkes’s questions.

My favorite speeches…

1. Christopher Bailey, Creative Director @ Burberry like a dj mixed effective visuals and music, lots of it, with pragmatic examples and clear messages. He’s really in tune with the times. He shared with the audience in a simple way many examples on how the company is approaching technology in an holistic way: be it environmental issues in the workplace, permanent videoconference facilities, wifi and skype, online activities, approach to social networks, and feedback from social networks. It’s not a matter on jumping on the bandwagon of the latest cool gadgetry. But of having a vision on how that brand could profit from technology, preparing a plan and rolling it out. Not being afraid of engaging into a dialogue, not sticking to the brand monologue bunker-mentality.

2. Natalie Massenet, CEO @ Net-à-porter answered in a candid way even tough questions such as “what is the % of merchandise sold online that is returned?”. It is about 25%, but the fact you can do it without fuss lowers the barrier to entry and encourages shopping. She approached the theme of discounts and outlets with grace but without hiding the truth. Very elegant, very impactful. Or, as Menkes said, Multinational, multilingual, multimedia…

3. Jochen Zeitz, CEO @ Puma delivered a very inspired and quite intimidating speech on the social responsibilities of companies, or rather, the responsibility tout court of companies and customers alike vis a’ vis the environment. He sounded a bit like a priest and sometimes a dash paternalistic, putting himself on a level above the audience. But apart from the form, the substance of the speech was there. My impression is that he is truly committed and is working with the objective to making a difference, starting with a different way to use packaging for instance. No cosmetic CSR, but a clear vision. He may sound idealistic, but ideals are not a bad thing to have and I trust the man is pragmatic too – after all he’s German, right? – and we will see the results down the road. The speech was carefully prepared, even if it was delivered like a sermon. Maybe the audience could have been spared the many references to Heidegger and Ralph Waldo Emerson, but very inspiring and deep nonetheless. The guy is honest and means what he says.

4. Jefferson Hack, Editorial Director, Dazed & Confused – during the coffee break Hack was rehearsing his presentation. I love to see this. It means the speaker is taking the audience seriously and has worked personally on his presentation, is involved and cares about the product and the customers he has in front of him. Hack started off with a powerful video (and sound, hey!) and carried on with an extremely lateral-thinking form of presentation, and clear ideas on smart media. Similarly as with music, we will consume media online and “buy the paper” in the same way as we “buy the CD” or the vinyl now: for its artwork, as a souvenir of the experienced we consumed somewhere else, online. At the end he showed he cared for the audience, signaling that a bunch of links had been prepared were available forthose who wished to further explore the matter of smart media. Competent and thorough, but at the same impactful and effective, without trying to please the audience or the moderator by means of cheap seduction. Rough edges.

I crossed later Hack at Grill Royal and couldn’t agree more with him on the theme of higher quality magazines. I buy far less magazines today than I used to 10 years ago. But those ones I buy, are of better quality and deliver something more than just the news or the odd fashion editorial. Think about Dummy, Monocle, Brand Eins. And Vogue Paris, which I still buy because of its clean graphic look, extraordinary art work and articles which are not shallow.

5. Ross Lovegrove, Designer, Lovegrove Studio – was able to deliver a presentation which bordered more on the philosophical divertissement than on the clear description of the role of technology in luxury. But he had won the siberian slot, the one around 3pm, and managed to keep the audience interested and entertained during the toughest moment of any conference: digestion. Was it because he mentioned that during his career as a cook he managed to add marijuana to any dish? or because he was very tanned and laid back? He loathes retrospective, he hates looking back and he only works on future/futuristic stuff. Still, objects become icons – and sell – also because they have the magic of aging well, epitomizing the Zeitgeist of their time. One should not despise the source of his cashflows, oder?

6. During the same module Adam Thorpe and Joe Hunter from Vexed dived deeper in the relationship between technology and the human body and discussed poignantly themes such as impact protection, moisture management, protection from pollution and visibility. We’re in smart materials territory, and the two bikers work on an array of projects also for other brands in order to develop materials with special properties and garments with ergonomic solutions to specific problems. I suggested to Adam to go and have a look to Otto Bock’s building across the road, an amazing buiding more fascinating than Prada’s Aoyama flagship in Tokyo…smart materials once more, with the difference that they deal with trauma recovery rather than avoiding trauma! Avant-après!

7. Alexander Reichert, Prada Transformer Project Architect, OMA together with Tomaso Galli from Prada. The Transformer is a fantastic giant toy and maybe you needed lateral risk-takers like the Pradas to make it a reality. Reichert’s project is a fantastic challenge which became real. On the one hand, I wonder about the financial implication and return of such a project. On the other hand, on paper it seems more interesting than Chanel’s cocoon-spaceship Art Container designed by Zaha Hadid, because it is truly innovative and capsizes, literally, the paradigm of building, making it truly…polyedric. Mongolian jurta, Eskimo boat, Indian Teepee, Scythian carriage, god knows how Reichert came up with the mega-toy. Reichert seemed quite shy (but very proud) in presenting his project, so some interesting slides got skipped because of his being maladroit. Tomaso’s communication skills were crucial in smoothing the creases. But as Reichert picked up a 3-d maquette of the Transformer things started to get better, he was more in control of the presentation and could share the 3-d idea behind it: a pyramid-shaped building morphing in a movie theater (rectangle), art exhibition (cross), special event (circle) and fashion event (octagon).….more tomorrow….

I guess living in Canada has its advantages and disadvantages. We get beautiful snowfalls and there

I guess living in Canada has its advantages and disadvantages. We get beautiful snowfalls and there are certain weeks during the winter in which everything is crisp and quiet at night. Walking out to find a beautiful, not-so-cold Friday night can be a great experience before ending up at a cozy pub for a night out with friends by a fireplace. Nothing like a great pint of Guinness and conversation while the snowflakes twinkle under the streetlights.

But a Toronto winter can also be a huge bitch and without the right thermal stuff or Gore-tex, one is literally left in the cold. Sometimes style is not a priority when your nose is falling off and the weeks drag on. But sometimes a hot outfit can bring some heat on a gloomy 30 below day. That is why I love this collection.

This will be my wardrobe for Winter 2009/2010. Burberry Burberry Burberry.

So more winter must-haves to come!

SO WE START OFF WITH EMMA WATSON’S GOLD OUTFIT THAT WAS DESIGNED ESPECIALLY FOR HER BY CHRISTOPHER BAILEY, WHICH SHE WORE TO LONDON FASHION WEEK:

(BTW I, Julie, love love LOVE Emma Watson. Yes I am a proud Watsonphile. I think it started out as a jealousy because she had the life I wanted but now it has turned into a full on, make my friends barmy, obsession. So expect to see the darling Miss Watson appear on this blog a lot. I can’t help it. I’m sorry.)

EMMA: I feel that dress doesn’t suit Emma, I’ve not seen a full body shot of her in it before.

JULIE: She looked awesome; I loved it. Plus Chris Bailey designed it just for her.

EMMA: It’s too short for her and cuts her legs off at a funny point. It makes them look odd.

JULIE: It’s a little bit short but it’s cute. I’m glad she wore colour seeing as normally it’s all black and blue, which is like me but I’m not on the red carpet.

EMMA: I think it might be the way she’s standing as well. And yeah, I know, it’s nice to see her in a bit of colour. She used to wear a lot of colour when she was younger; what happened?

JULIE: I know! Sad times.

(SPEAKING OF COLOUR, WATSON WORE A PURPLE VINTAGE DRESS TO THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN PREMIERE IN LONDON’S LEICESTER SQUARE, A BLUE CHANEL NUMBER FOR ORDER OF THE PHOENIX IN LONDON AND A BLUE AND GOLD CHANEL DRESS IN PARIS.)

EMMA: I still love that dress she wore to the PoA premiere; it was so haphazard and awesome.

JULIE: I know, so appropriate for her age. I mean, I wouldn’t wear it now.

EMMA: My favourite’s still the OotP one in London:

JULIE: I love the way she looked at the Paris OotP, but then her hair was gorgeous!

EMMA: Ah, the blue and gold Chanel.

JULIE: Facially, I think she looked the best there; her hair and face were amazing.

EMMA: Yeah, that one’s really nice, one of my favourites, but I still really like the one we saw her in at the London one.

MANY JOURNALISTS REPORTING ON EMMA WATSON HAVE COMMENTED ON THE CHANGE WE’VE SEEN IN HER SINCE SHE FIRST ARRIVED ON THE BIG SCREEN, ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHANGES BEING HER GRADUAL DESCENT INTO THE WORLD OF FASHION, GOING TO MANY FASHION EVENTS INCLUDING AWARDS, PARTIES AND FASHION WEEK.

JULIE: And I loved the BAFTA pre-party Chanel one, especially the Lanvin necklace.

EMMA: She doesn’t change her hair a lot to be honest, except to put it up and I don’t really like it like that. The picture just came up and yeah, she looks lovely; her make-up’s perfect.

JULIE: The actual BAFTA hair was good and her hair at the Chanel 2007 show was amazing! The whole look was so good.

EMMA: The leather one? You would love that. It looked awful.

JULIE: No, it doesn’t!

EMMA: I like her make-up, though.

JULIE: It’s awesome.

EMMA: It’s so completely different to how she normally dresses; it looks wrong.

EMMA’S FORAY INTO FASHION INEVITABLY HAD HER DOING PHOTO-SHOOTS. LIKE TATLER:

EMMA: What was the one where in one of them she had that white jumpsuit on and was leaning against a wall?

JULIE: Tatler, 2007.

EMMA: I liked that.

JULIE: Yeah, she looked older than usual.

EMMA: I really liked the lighting in those photos, and the white dress.

JULIE: The Chanel one on the cover? LOVED that one. I lusted after it for a very long time.

EMMA: I’m not sure if it was Chanel but it does look like it. It’s the one with the deep v-neck – or maybe it’s a wraparound – and she’s got her arms over her head.

JULIE: I’m pretty sure it was Chanel.

EMMA: Her hair looked lush in that photo shoot too, and I liked the grey and white shift with the pockets; I thought that was very her.

JULIE: The see-through one?

EMMA: The grey bit is see-through.

JULIE: I think I know which one you’re talking about and it was gorgeous.

EMMA: I don’t think it’d suit us though because of our figures.

JULIE: Fashion does tend to be made for smaller-chested ladies.

EMMA: Her hair is darker than usual here, right? She looks really sophisticated. I swear it’s not normally that dark, even in the movies.

JULIE: She dyed it brown – very brown.

EMMA: Very, very brown! It suits her, but I love her blonde.

JULIE: It looked good though. A lot of people thought it was a bit too much but I thought, Why not? She looked older than her years but in a good way, not in the Miley Cyrus way.

EMMA: Miley Cyrus’ hair is amazing! What are you talking about?!

JULIE: It is amazing, but she’s quite blatantly trying to be older than she is. What sixteen-year-old pole-dances onstage?!

EMMA: Well, yeah, very true. How old is she now?

JULIE: Sixteen.

EMMA: Still?! She looks crazily older.

JULIE: EXACTLY!

EMMA: It upsets me that I really want to look like a sixteen-year-old.

JULIE: You do look like a sixteen-year-old.

Inspired by Burberry’s new ’social networking site’, Art of the Trench, I met up w

Inspired by Burberry’s new ’social networking site’, Art of the Trench, I met up with my Italian friend Cristina for breakfast and a long-overdue trip to the Burberry Factory Outlet at Hackney Central (ah, the luxury of Bond Street shopping just five minutes away).

Having heard rumours on the net about Burberry disciples hunting out jackets for a mere £80, we had high expectations and fully intended to emerge dressed like the slightly smug, Sartorialist-snapped hipsters on the site.

The outlet is like a shining fashion beacon, almost temple-like, in the middle of a particularly non-descript part of Hackney. On arrival, we were asked to put all of our world belongings (apart from our purses, conveniently) in the lockers at the entrance. Usually I’d be horrified at the thought of being separated from my keys, phone and other handbag essentials, but it actually lent to more efficient browsing and I knew my possessions would be safe under the watchful eye of the burly security guards and stern Italian lady on the door.

Our hearts leapt when greeted by a large, checked, although slightly hideous bag at the front of the store, which was just £149. We were ready to scoop up some of the more tasteful pieces, however, the so-called bargain was more of a mirage than a taste of things to come. The bags that you’d actually want to have on your arm, from the runway collections, were priced between £300 and £700, although this was a mighty discount from the original £1000+.

Discounts range from a shy 20% up to a massive 70%. Cristina found a gorgeous silk and net cocktail dress in either brown or red that was reduced from £1230 to £120!

Burberry tend to go for one style of shoe for the catwalk shows, and low and behold, I spotted the black patent leather heels with ruched straps from the Autumn/Winter 08 show and the olive green lace-ups from the Spring/Summer 09 collection, all gracing the tootsies of models like Agy, Daisy, Irina and Sasha.

My tops picks of the trip included a delicate, iridescent silver mac for £150, some studded/warrior leather gloves for £89 and some incredible black lace-up, calf-lenth boots for just £200. Cristina hunted out a gorgeous silk and net cocktail dress in chocolate brown or berry red that was reduced from £1230 to £120!

There are some more affordable items like perfume gift sets from £29, checked wool scarves from £69 and a selection of purses and jewellery, including the square warrior cuff from last summer. The great thing about the Burberry outlet is that there are timeless, investment pieces that you buy for a snip of the price and can keep forever. The prices aren’t exactly cheap, but if you’re in the market for one excellent quality bag or trench, then you can upgrade from high end high street to luxury for just a little bit extra.

The outlet doesn’t offer refunds or exchanges, so make sure you’ve tried on your purchase, that there are no visible production faults and most of all, that you really love it. It can be quite easy to kid yourself into liking the best of the pile in the name of a bargain! Come armed with Christmas money and scour the clearance rails with a fine tooth comb for the real discounts.

Burberry Factory Outlet, 29-53 Chatham Place, Hackney, London, E9 6LP

Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 11am-5pm.

How to get there: Overground: Hackney Central Tube: Bethnal Green + 106/254 bus to Hackney Town Hall or 20 minutes walk.

That’s what IMG and The International Herald Tribune are trying to prove, anyway. Tomorrow and Wednesday, IMG and the IHT’s Suzy Menkes are hosting the annual luxury conference (this year’s title: Techno Luxury), which will feature speakers like Christopher Bailey, Frida Giannini, Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, and Alain Dominique-Perrin, from Burberry, Gucci, Hugo Boss AG and Compagnie Financière Richemont, respectively.

It’s IMG’s first time to jump on board as both host and sponsor for the event (they normally stick to Fashion Week-y things), which this year is being held at The Ritz Carlton in Berlin, a newbie fashion capital. Past conferences have been held in Moscow, New Delhi, Istanbul, and Dubai.

The conference’s website lists publishers, law firms, brand managers, importers, banks, advertising agencies, designers, fashion houses and communications firms as worthy attendees, so let’s hope they can all come up with something to get even rich people shopping again.

The wait is finally over, as today Burberry launched their new digital platform and social networking site, artofthetrench.com. The site features men, women and children displaying their unique trench styles (who knew you could wear a trench in so many ways), allowing users to upload their own trench photos, as well as comment on others.

Burberry’s Creative Director Christopher Bailey announced this morning that ‘Artofthetrench.com celebrates our iconic trench coat, capturing the emotional connection behind our distinctive outerwear heritage.”. Of course, there is no better way to kick off the celebration than a collaboration with the world’s most famous street style photographer, The Sartorialist, displaying his favourite looks from London, Milan, New York, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo and Venice.

So if you thought that the trench was just a bland cover up that goes with everything, think again, and make it your statement piece. With The Sartorialist only being the first of many collaborations, this site is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Here are a few of About your Dress’ favourites:

Burberry has launched a social networking site which celebrates its iconic trench coat. The Art of the Trench (www.artofthetrench.com) is a living document of the people around the world who wear the trench coat and is a collaboration between Burberry and some of the world’s greatest photographers, as well as participation from the world’s creative community. Visitors to the site are also invited to submit images of themselves or friends wearing the trench coat which Burberry will regularly look through and upload their favourites to the site.

For the site’s launch, Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey commissioned a collection of photographs of trench wearers around the world taken by photographer Scott Schuman – The Sartorialist, especially for the site…seeing all these photographs just makes me want a Burberry trench coat even more!

These are some of my favourite photographs from the site:

C’est une véritable pluie de récompenses qui s’abat sur la noble maison de couture depuis l’arrivée de Christopher Bailey à la tête de sa direction artistique ! Le 2 novembre dernier, Burberry a été désignée “marque de l’année” par le jury de l’ACE (Accessories Council Excellence), pour récompenser sa contribution à la création. Etant donné l’absence du D.A. de la marque au chevalier, c’est la top model Agyness Deyn qui a reçu le trophée.
