The Perfect Nerder (R)

Ed Butkins (Jon Heder) and Eric Van Euytven (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) are two certified geniuses and members of Mensa, with an obsession for television crime drama (CSI, Law & Order, etc).

Together, they comb through hours of their favourite shows, piecing together the ingredients for a perfect murder. Their target? Arch-nerd-rival and current president of the local Mensa group, Eugene Sawchuk, (Quentin Tarantino), known for having an IQ 2 points higher than their own.

Over time, Sawchuk catches wind of the scheme and decides to try to eliminate his two rivals by giving them a ‘dose of their own medicine’.

Final scene features an over-the-top Tarantino-esque massacre involving all three nerds, several bags of toenails, semen and random DNA samples, anthrax-laced soda pop and a booby-trapped elevator.

"You're under arrest. No, really you are. Stop laughing!"

One of the hottest names in comedy in  is Judd Apatow, who is a producer on Superbad. Better still, the writer and one of the stars is another hot name, Seth Rogen (who starred in Apatow’s Knocked Up).

It is the waning days of their senior year and best friends Seth (Hill) and Evan (Cera) have passed through their high school years unremarkably, not cool enough to hang with the “A” crowd and as a result, score with the girls, but not quite dorky enough to be all-out geeks. There is a little tension in the air between them, however; Evan has been accepted to Dartmouth whereas Seth, who is not quite as smart as his friend, could only get into a state college.

They are going through their last weeks being put upon by jocks and wishing they could go to one last party, when they are invited to one by Jules (Stone), one of the cooler girls in school. The problem is that Seth has bragged that they have a fake ID and can get liquor for the party, so Jules is expecting them to. Making things worse, Becca (MacIasaac), a girl Evan has had a crush on, like, forever, is expecting him at the party too.

They might be okay though; their truly dorky friend Fogell (Mintz-Plasse) has gotten himself a fake ID which labels him a 25-year-old organ donor from Hawaii named McLovin (no first name). Seth is pulling his naturally curly hair out by the roots, but Fogell – er, McLovin – is confident. He goes into a liquor store, gets the items on the list provided by Seth and Evan, brings the bottles to the front counter – and gets cold-cocked by a robber.

The case is being investigated by two cops you won’t ever want to see pull you over – Slater (Hader) and Michaels (Rogen). They convince Fogell that they’ll drop him off wherever he wants to go and that they believe he’s a 25-year-old organ donor from Hawaii named McLovin. This forces Seth and Evan to improvise, leading them to the party from Hell. In the meantime, Fogell goes on a ridealong that makes “Cops” look like the “Donna Reed Show”.

This isn’t for the sensitive or the easily offended. The humor can be crude and sophomoric, and four letter words are used with great abandon. That said, this is easily one of the funniest movies of recent years. Some of the gags and jokes were laugh-out-loud, fall-out-of-your-seat, pee-your-pants funny.

The young actors do some really good work here. Mintz-Plasse, who looks like what Stewie from “The Family Guy” might look like when he grows up, is memorable as Fogell, getting not only the smarts right but also the awkwardness and false bravado letter perfect. It’s hard to believe he was only 17 years old at the time of filming. Hill has a great deal of potential, but he was unfocused at times and I wound up kind of getting sick of his character after awhile. MacIsaac is cute, sexy and does one of the better drunk seduction scenes you will ever witness.

Superbad was something of a surprise hit – although in all honesty Columbia’s publicity department pushed it hard. If you can get past the swearing and bodily fluids, you’re probably going to dig it big time. If not, well, there are reruns of I Love Lucy on TV Land that will suit you better.

WHY RENT THIS: Laugh-out-loud funny. Genuinely “gets” teenagers. Walks thin line between sentimentality and maudlin without falling off the rope.

WHY RENT SOMETHING ELSE: Extremely crude and sophomoric. Final third drags in places.

FAMILY MATTERS: Are you kidding? This is crude, lewd, rude and proud to be that way. Lots of filthy language, plenty of sexual situations and the unrated cut on the DVD is even farther afield than the theatrical release. Not for the kids in any way shape or form even though some of the more mature boys will want to see it.

TRIVIAL PURSUITS: The lead roles were named for co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

NOTABLE DVD EXTRAS: There are plenty in the extended unrated 2-disc DVD edition. There is a practical joke played on Jonah Hill as well as a faux documentary on actor Michael Cera, a staged interview in which Hill loses it during an interview with a snooty British interview, improvs done in the police cruiser with “special guest stars” including Justin Long, Chris Kattan, Jane Lynch and Kristen Wiig, as well as the traditional Apatow feature “Line-o-rama” in which lines of dialogue from the film are read by different actors.

FINAL RATING: 8/10

Lo scopo per tutti i giovani è quello di catturare un dragone per dimostrare l’avvenuta maturità.

L’obiettivo è l’area nota come “Wild Dragon Cliff”.

Kick-Ass tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero.

As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name — Kick-Ass — assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There’s only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Cage).

Awesome! It doesn’t look nearly as violent as the comic book. However, I’m sure that the movie will live up to the hype and the amazing pre-release reviews.

This teaser really misrepresents this movie, or at least the comic-book.  I’m not saying this is a bad teaser, but there’s no doubt that the movie will be significantly more gory and hard-core.

But on to the story.  This is based on a very, very new comic book series about a teenage kid who is bored and depressed (what a unique teenager) so he decides that he should become a superhero.  Things don’t go well, he get’s destroyed.  This comic doesn’t hold back, it may at times look like a comedy, but when people are getting beat-up or killed it doesn’t edit anything.  I hear that the movie does the same thing, and I hope that’s true.  But until we get a red-band trailer we’ll just have to hope.

Pues si, a pesar de que mientras escribo estas líneas la web oficial de la película todavía marca 2 días, 8 horas y 44 minutos para que el trailer del film fuera visto por todos nosotros, va y se le adelantan, y ya podemos ver un adelanto de casi 2 minutos de la nueva película de Matthew Vaughn, “Kick-Ass”.

De primeras era una película que iba a pasar desapercibida por el publico ya que ningún estudio quiso financiarla por la calificación que el guión presentado a las grandes productoras requería, pero eso no tiro para atrás a los responsables del film que decidieron financiarla de una manera independiente a las majors hollywoodenses y así tener pleno control sobre el material. El siguiente reto era encontrar una distribuidora, y de eso se encargo la magia de la Comic Con de San Diego, ya que tras proyectarse varios minutos del film, los fans que acudieron al evento enloquecieron y fue entonces cuando los ojeadores de las majors vieron que esta película tendría tirón y fueron muchos los que se quisieron hacer con los derechos de distribución, que finalmente Lionsgate logró.

Ya está aquí Kick-Ass como se nos había prometido, con un primer trailer divertido, dinámico y descacharrante que anticipa buenas vibraciones respecto a la película de Matthew Vaughn. Ahora viene una pequeña ola de superhéroes autoparódicos (recordemos también a Defendor) de cuya base pretende ser inspiración este filme sobre un friki que decide convertirse en justiciero pese a no tener ningún superpoder, conociendo en su labor a otros que como él, se han vestido los leotardos y han decidido tomarse la justicia por su mano. Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Mark Strong, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Xander Berkeley, Lyndsy Fonseca, Omari Hardwick y Clark Duke forman el reparto.

Voici un film que j’ai vraiment envie de voir, car ça m’a l’air d’être totalement barrer cette histoire d’adolescents qui se prennent pour des super-héros alors qu’ils n’ont aucun pouvoir.

The Trailer for the adaptation of Mark Millar’s recent miniseries Kick-Ass is out early on Traileraddict.com (click link to watch.)

The spiritual successor to Millar’s other recent adaptation, Wanted (which you can read about my feelings on here), the Kick-Ass movie tells the story of Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a skinny comic nerd who decides to put on a costume one day and go out and fight crime as Kick-Ass. A video of him posted on You-Tube inspires other citizens to put on their own outlandish costumes and join him in his often humerous, and sometimes downright terrifying, attempts to save the world.

It’s an interesting look at how superheroes would work in the real world (spoiler: they don’t). Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake), the trailer makes it look something more along the lines of a Judd Apatow movie. That is to say, nerds and awkward moments abound. If you look closely, the character Red Mist in the trailer is played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin from Superbad, an Apatow produced film).

Si hace un par de días comentaba que hacia mucho que no hablaba de esta adaptación, parece que la campaña para publicitarla comienza a moverse rápido, ya que han lanzado la web oficial y en ella han colgado una cuenta atrás, que en el momento que llegue a su fin, podremos ver el trailer del film.
