I did my first real professional video shoot in my new home green screen studio today.  I hired the teenage daughter of a friend to come in and do some typical stock footage type stuff (talking on a cell, texting, etc..).  It went pretty well.

I had done some test shots earlier in the day to check my lighting.  But somehow it changed slightly and I have some green screen lighting issues in my shots.  Fortunately, Keylight in After Effects is really easy to use and works very well. I was able to use it to get a decent key and then put the result back on top of a clean green solid.

The HF11’s poor low light capability is still and pain-in-the-ass.  When she changed into a darker shirt midway into the shoot I ended up with a bit of noise in the dark areas.  If you resize the video down to SD it looks great, but you can clearly seen the grain in the HD footage.  I need to overlight the subject next time and step down the exposure slightly.

Betti Propaganda criou o estande da Redeimóveis na Feira de Imóveis 2009, que começou na quarta-feira, 4 de novembro, e vai até o próximo domingo, dia 8, no Estação Embratel Convention Center, em Curitiba. Com o tema “Túnel do Tempo”, o espaço mostra um pouco da história da publicidade de imóveis no Paraná, desde a década de 1950. Além de painéis com anúncios em placas, jornais, revistas e nos próprios imóveis, a exposição conta com dois televisores que exibem um breve documentário sobre a evolução da publicidade no segmento.

Depois de assistir ao vídeo, o visitante é convidado a fazer uma pesquisa de imóveis da Redeimóveis através de monitores de plasma touchscreen. Ao fazer a busca, a imagem da pessoa é gravada, e é produzida uma animação, que pode ser enviada para o visitante por E-mail. A visita pelo estande termina com o atendimento pessoal de corretores. Fundada em 1993, em Curitiba, a Redeimóveis é uma associação que reúne as imobiliárias Thá, Galvão,Galvão Vendas, Cilar, Cibraco, Futurama, Estilo, 2000, Paraná Brokers, Habitec e Razão.

I just purchased a sofware program that gives you the power of performing chroma key picture and video layering. This product is a three layer software so if the photo degenerates in the proccess you can add a third layer of the same picture and erase the first layer to revitalize the finished product. Now I’m not a video or photography pro, I’m a audio specialist. I have my own recording studio with Digidesign’s Pro Tools. But I can see using this aoftware for myself to make videos to promote my studio. It has pro features that a novice like myself can understand and incorporate. Try the demo or at least watch the video’s they provide on each version. there is a full, pro, video, and photoshop plug in version. I don’t have photoshop, like I said I’m still a novice in the video and photo world, but I’m thinking about purchasing photoshop just because this program is that cool. Utilizzo della tecnica Chroma key per simulare il volo di Superman nelle riprese del film “Superman returns”

Il Chroma key (letteralmente chiave cromatica, ma un termine italiano più preciso è intarsio a chiave colore) è una delle tecniche usate per realizzare i cosiddetti “effetti di Keying” (come il Luma Key o chiave di luminanza ed il Matte), effetti speciali usati in ambito televisivo e cinematografico, ad esempio per le previsioni del tempo o le scene di volo.

Il chroma key permette di unire due sorgenti video, sfruttando un particolare colore (appunto il “colore chiave”) per segnalare al mixer video quale sorgente usare in un dato momento: supponendo di avere un video di sfondo e il video di un presentatore che si muove su uno sfondo uniforme di colore chiave, la consolle video trasmetterà in uscita il video del presentatore soltanto nei punti con un colore diverso dalla chiave: nei punti del video in cui c’è il colore chiave, invece, la consolle userà il video di sfondo. In altre parole, il colore chiave viene interpretato dalla consolle video come “trasparente”.

Il chroma key si usa per ambientare soggetti e oggetti su sfondi “virtuali”, aggiunti separatamente e successivamente utlizzando per lo più materiale completamente elaborato in digitale, con l’ausilio della computer grafica, integrato con i movimenti dal vero degli attori.

La tecnica del chroma key ebbe una prima versione con il Blue Back (alle scene con gli attori venivano integrate scene girate altrove). Viene realizzata attualmente tramite il cosiddetto Green screen (in precedenza Blue screen, derivazione del Blue Back). Originariamente si usava il blu come colore chiave, ma attualmente si è passati al Pantone 354 (verde), perché più adatto alle telecamere digitali.

“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” (è questo il titolo originale) è un film diretto da Terry Gilliam, basato su uno script di Gilliam e dello sceneggiatore Charles McKeown. La pellicola è il 14° film di Terry Gilliam, l’ultimo dopo Tideland, Il mondo capovolto del 2005, e segna l’ultima interpretazione di Heath Ledger, scomparso il 22 gennaio 2008 durante una pausa delle riprese. Per ovviare a questo problema sono intervenuti gli attori Jude Law, Johnny Depp e Colin Farrel che hanno recitato per interpretare le tre trasformazioni di Tony nelle varie dimensioni dello specchio di Parnassus. I tre attori hanno inoltre deciso di donare tutti i diritti sulla pellicola alla piccola Matilda, figlia dell’attore scomparso.
Il film è stato girato tra Londra e Vancouver, con molte sequenze realizzate con la tecnologia Green screen.

Il film narra la storia del Dottor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), affiancato da Anthony “Tony” Shepherd (Heath Ledger); quest’ultimo si trova ad affrontare un viaggio magico in uno specchio che il Dottor Parnassus ha avuto grazie ad un patto con il diavolo Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), il quale pretende l’anima della giovane Valentina (Lily Cole), figlia di Parnassus.

Il film è stato presentato fuori concorso al Festival di Cannes 2009, insieme al primo trailer internazionale ed ora è nelle sale dal 23 ottobre 2009 in Italia, mentre negli Usa lo è già dal 18 ottobre a causa del grande successo ottenuto appunto a Cannes.

Chroma Keying is one of my favorite functions when it comes to shooting video. It does however make you lazy, as you can find yourself relying on just shooting in front of a green screen rather than searching for a suitable location.

I could spend hours (and have done) playing with different effects, both with the subject standing in front of the screen or with the back ground, changing it so that you place you subject in different locations.

I use Apple’s Final Cut, and this is what I do to ensure my Chroma Key looks good

1-   Add Colour Smoothing 4:1:1, Chroma Keyer and Spill Suppressor (Green/Blue depending on what background you are using).

2-   Turn off Colour Smoothing and spill suppressor (for the moment).

3-   Adjust the Chroma Keyer take out as much of the background as possible and use the slider functions (Thin Edge, Smoothing and Enhance) to fine tune the colour.

4-   When you are happy with the result use the Colour Smoothing 4:1:1 filter and just turn it on/off to see if it helps the overall output, if it doesn’t just leave it off.

5-   Finally use the Spill Suppressor to take out any green from the subjects face or features, and use the slider to adjust this.

You should now have a good looking Chroma effect.

Muita gente já ouviu falar sobre o chroma, mas poucos sabem como e quando usar e de que forma uma filmagem em chroma ajuda ou atrapalha em uma gravação.  Hoje, esta técnica é muito utilizada em filmes e seriados de TV, com a finalidade de simular fundos, e consequentemente economizar dinheiro nas produções. Por exemplo, se for necessária uma gravação de um ator em Paris, porque enviar toda a equipe para a França?? Grava no chroma!! Se tem uma tomada dentro de um carro, a parafernália para fazer essa gravação como aluguel de carros, câmera car e preocupação com trânsito, fica melhor solucionado de for gravado em estúdio com um fundo azul.

Por falar em fundo azul, o choma pode ser da cor que você quiser. Só que as cores mais usadas são verde e azul, pois normalmente na gravação estão os atores, cenários e diversos elementos em cena. Essas duas cores são mais fáceis de recortar, já que a pele humana se aproxima de uma tonalidade vermelha. Caso o choma for vermelho, irão sumir alguns braços, cabeças e pernas… Eu particularmente prefiro o azul, pois o verde é muito claro e fica com uma espécie de “stroke” em volta de todo o recorte. Para que haja uma melhor interação entre o fundo inserido e a gravação do chroma, esse recorte tem que estar impecável, sem moires, sombras e nuances de cor. Outro ponto que determina um bom recorte é a iluminação na gravação. Chomas com penumbras, e sombras criam diversas tonalidades que difilcultam na hora do recorte.

Se você quiser fazer um chroma em casa, é necessário um pano ou lona de preferência azul ou verde, e uma boa iluminação nesse fundo. Além disso, os softwares caseiros adequados para o recorte são Final Cut Pro e Adobe After Effects. Este último possui uma qualidade melhor para esse tipo de efeito, já que na paleta de efeitos “keying” é possível obter ótimos resultados com recortes conviscentes. Além disso, o After Effects dispõe de uma série de pluggins para o recorte, como por exemplo o “Keylight” do grupo de pluggins The Foundry. Outro bom programa de composição para este efeito é o Fusion que tem quase todos os pluggins disponíveis tanto para After quanto para Inferno e Flame. Na Rede Globo todo o material produzido em chroma é recortado, composto e finalizado nos programas de composição da Autodesk (Inferno, Flame e Flint).

Tem um cara no You Tube chamado Mark Apsolon que ensina diversas formas de fazer um chroma key, desde qual material comprar, como esticar, como iluminar, free softwares, efim… É só pesquisar que está tudo ao seu alcance!! Abaixo vai um vídeo dele.

Even though I started shooting and editing video some 10 years ago – I can honestly say that I still have a lot to learn.  The “learning” part of my craft has been non-stop.  I continue to learn as technology constantly pushes us all in that direction.  But I love it.  I love raising my bar every chance I get.  And these days, even though the learning curve may be steep in certain aspects of video production – it’s also a lot easier to access information and help than it was 10 years ago.  Again – thanks to the volumes of information online – at the click of a button.

I love the editing process of video production because this is really where I craft the story.  I can get totally lost in the story and how I can mold that in whatever direction I choose in the edit room.  But I’m not a professional editor and I have the utmost respect for what a pro brings to this part of the process.  So I lay down my rough cut – to get the storyline down and then hand it off to a pro to take it to the next level.

I’m editing a recent shoot that was quite challenging on all accounts.  A lot of what was shot, was shot on “green screen”. Green screen or “chroma key” is the process of removing a background color, – green for video – blue for film – so that the “subject” or “object” can be placed into another background in post. There is a lot of info out there on green screens so I won’t go into it in depth, but the biggest thing you need to know is how to properly shoot green screen so you won’t have a major melt down in post – or won’t have to spend a fortune for an editor to clean up your mistakes.  

A couple of tips for shooting on green screen:

•    Turn off edge enhancements or sharpening in Picture Profiles – in camera menu
•    Create a new Green screen Picture Profile w/o sharpening
•    Keep subject lighting off background
•    Keep background lighting off subject
•    Keep green screen as far away from subject as possible
•    Minimize seams, wrinkles, folds
•    Even out your green screen lighting within 1/2 stop
•    Brightness level should be about one stop under key light on your subject.
•    Light your subject complimentary to your inserted background
•    Don’t use dimmers – changes color temp toward red – not good for keying
•    Create an edge or separation light – keep it subtle!!
•    Watch out for reflective objects and surfaces (CAR SURFACE) that can pick up green screen

So if you’ve successfully shot a good clean composition as described above – then of course you need to put things together in post. This used to be a tedious process and would involve a lot of work in post production.  But thanks to some incredible plug-ins available – you can get a pretty amazing “key” without a lot of hours in the editing room.

I found a product that really helped me out.  DVmatte Blast and DVmatte Pro from www.dvgarage.com. These plug-ins will work inside Final Cut Pro as well as Motion.  I chose to work within Final Cut.  I was amazed by not only how easy it was to use but by the price as well.  DVmatte Blast was $99 but I purchased DVmatte Pro for $199 because it gave me more “tweaking” options.  And as always whenever I need to learn a new piece of software – I went to http://www.lynda.com.  So instead of laboring with greens screens in post for an entire day – I got the job done in a matter of a couple of hours – and I had a lot of compositions to make.

I love to learn but I also like to lead some sort of a personal life – away from the computer.  And these days – thanks to a little help from my “friends” I’m achieving a nice balance.

Once only available to Hollywood and BBC weathermen, it’s now possible for anyone to use green screen or chroma key technology.

Chroma key is a technique for mixing two images or frames together, in which a color (or a small color range) from one image is removed (or made transparent), revealing another image behind it. This technique is also referred to as color keying, colour-separation overlay, greenscreen, and bluescreen.

This video was made using a couple of Sony HDD Camcorders, on one of them was screwed a 37mm adapter with a ring of green LEDs.

I sat on a sofa in front of a screen which is not green (but you can use green) but has reflective beads to reflect the green light back into the camera.

Using Apple’s iMovie 09 and switching on the Advanced Tools option in preferences allows you to add your green screen footage over exisiting footage.

Has quite a bit of potential to making short videos more interesting and adding learners and practitioners over exisiting footage to explain stuff.

Das plötzliche Auftauchen und Verschwinden des „Geists“ lässt sich über zwei BiB-Spuren und verschiedene Videos erreichen.

Wichtig ist, dass ihr zwei Versionen der betreffenden Szene besitzt – einmal ohne „Geist“ und einmal mit ihm. Damit später beide Videos perfekt „übereinander“ passen, nehmt diese Szene am besten mit einem Stativ auf, das sich bei der Aufnahme der beiden Videos exakt an der selben Stelle befinden sollte.

Importiert beide Videos in PowerDirector und positioniert das Video ohne Geist auf der Haupt-Videospur. Zieht dann das Video mit dem Geist auf eine der BiB-Spuren und trimmt es in kurze Abschnitte (wie auf dem Screenshot zu sehen ist, habe ich die kürzest mögliche Dauer gewählt – 0,2 Sekunden). Wiederholt diesen Schritt beliebig oft und positioniert dann die verschiedenen Fragmenten in unregelmässigen Abständen.

Damit der Geist authentischer wirkt, habe ich mich entschieden, ihn etwas „durchsichtig“ erscheinen zu lassen. Dieser Effekt lässt sich über Chroma Keying erreichen. Geht dazu folgendermassen vor:

1. Doppelklickt auf das Video mit dem Geist (auf der BiB-Spur).
2. In dem sich dann öffnenden Fenster klickt erst in das Kästchen neben der Pipette und „Chroma Key anwenden“.
3. Klickt danach auf die Pipette. Ein weiteres Fenster wird sich öffnen.
4. Hier wählt nun durch einen Klick auf eine bestimmt Stelle (sprich: Farbe) der angezeigten Szene die Farbe aus, die später im Video durchsichtig sein soll. (Wie ihr in meinem Screenshot sehen könnt, habe ich mich für einen etwas dunkleren Ton als die Hautfarbe meines „Geists“ entschieden).
5. Über den Schieberegler im selben Fenster lässt sich die Intensität des Effekts einstellen.
6. Mit einem Klick auf „Schließen“ sollten dann die ausgewählten Veränderungen auf das Video angewendet werden.

A YouTube video was brought to my attention this afternoon. I have been helping students with folios and photos over the past few weeks and so it was quite apt.

The video is called Visual Effects: 100 Years of Inspiration.

It is a collection of clips and making-of footage from notable visual effects films of the past century. It is very appropriate for classroom use and is a good introduction to media/film or studio arts.

Did you guess the films that the clips came from? I must be a movie buff because I guessed most of them. It is an amazing array and the time span is really so short and the changes have been so immense. However, the ingenuity of the human mind always seems o be able to come up with new and alternative ideas. Many of our students in the visual arts areas have wonderful imaginations and often have wonderful ideas and then have to think up alternatives that will fit their budget and the schools resources.

The use of video editing is a powerful tool to bring into the classroom.  I envision having students create newscast and news repots using video.  However, I would love students to be able to use a green screen and add images or video of historic events to the background of their news cast.  Students would then be able to pretend like they are at the actual event they are reporting on.  Through my searching, the best FREE program I found is called WAX.  Through this program you are able to create videos using green screen/chroma key.  Once you figure out how to use the program it is very simple.  Included is a video that shows how to add the chroma key to any video you desire.
