When I first saw Infinity on the bookshelves in June 2010, I instantly knew it would be a great read. The exquisite colours on the cover contrasted beautifully with each other and immediately reeled me in. However, what really caught my attention was Ms. Kenyon’s name written elegantly at the bottom. Ms. Kenyon is and will forever be a well renowned author as I had seen her name on posters and frequently in the hands of readers, whether they were walking down the street or either taking the bus to work or school.

Sherrilyn Kenyon is a fabulous author who can only be described as a genius. Her magnificent story lines and intoxicating story plots will always keep you on the edge of your seat, gasping for more. Her riveting novels will appeal to everyone and anyone. If you’re looking for an extraordinary read that will satisfy your craving, definitely look for Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books.

The Chronicles of Nick is Sherrilyn Kenyon‘s first young adult series and, personally, I think that Invincible is infinitely better than the first book of the series, Infinity. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Infinity. However, aside from the fact that there was no sex and minimal swearing, Invincible felt less like a young adult novel to me. I may be the only one who feels that way, but there it is.

That being said, I just want to say that I really like that Nick has different adventures and trials with each book. In the first book, he and his friends had to take down a pack of killer zombies. In this book, killer demons are after Nick because he is the Malachai and they want his powers and soul. Looks like Nicky’s got a full plate! I wonder what he will come across in the next book, Inevitable.

One of my problems with this series is Ambrose. I’m still not sure how I feel about him, especially about him messing with Nick’s past and, ultimately, his future. I know that Kenyon is changing Nick’s past for a reason, but I don’t know why and I’m worried about what it will change in “the present.” Is it going to change Nick’s life? Is it going to change how Nick can deal with his powers? Will Nick already have control over his powers? Will Nick and Acheron still be friends? Who’s to say. I just hope that it doesn’t change a lot of what we already know about Nick from the Dark-Hunter series. Another thing about Ambrose is…Nick figures out who he is at the end! *GASP!*

Nekoda and Caleb are two characters that I’m also still not sure about. I want to like Caleb, and I actually do, but I still don’t know what’s doing with him. He’s relatively more honest than Nekoda about her aims, but who knows what’s going on.

Review:

I absolutely loved seeing other familiar characters in this book once Cherise started working at Sanctuary and in other circumstances: Remi, Dev, Aimee, Wren, Colt, Tate, and lots of others. Seriously. I got really, really excited and start squealing my ass off, and I’m pretty sure I scared my dog. But yeah, I loved seeing them. However, my absolute favorite character to see was…Savitar! I want his little Savy babies. Good Lord, I love that man. He’s quite possibly my favorite male character of the series–Dark-Hunter that is.

Review:

Nicholas Gautier (that’s Go-shay; don’t mispronounce it!) is fourteen, a poor scholarship kid at a prestigious private school, and it seems like he’s the punching bag of most of the jocks. His father is in prison on multiple counts of murder, and his mother works her butt off as a stripper just to keep a tiny roof over their heads and second-hand clothes on their backs. All of these things are strikes against him in high school–which is pretty much hell for him–and that’s before one of his classmates goes zombie and tries to eat another student.

Nick wears a smart mouth and an attitude as armor against those who mock him.
Kenyon has a gift for writing smart asses, and in a novel populated with teenagers, the snark really flies. I love it. Under immediate threat by zombies? Snark at your sibling, buddy, or classmate. Pop off at people who can, and probably will, kick your butt–it’s all good. In the midst of the insanity, Nick discovers that most of his high school’s football team is composed of shape shifters, and that soul sucking vampires, vampire hunters, secret societies, ancient gods–and oh yeah, demons–all exist. As it turns out, Bubba, New Orleans’ crazy zombie hunter, isn’t so crazy after all. Nick spends an awful lot of his time in Infinity trying to stay alive, protect his mother (who is blissfully unaware of the supernatural), and not get grounded–and not ticking his mother off is mighty important. There are times I think it trumps, for him, staying alive.

Nick learns that his heritage isn’t as straight forward as he thought it was, and takes the first steps toward exploring who he is, and can be. There are external forces at work actively trying to keep him on the straight and narrow path, just as there are others actively trying to turn him toward the dark. This skinny teenager is mighty important to a fair number of people for a variety of reasons.

Nonetheless, all he wants is to survive high school, not end up like his loathed father, and to make his beloved mother proud even though he finds himself strongly tempted to do things she’d never, ever, approve of. If you are familiar with the Dark-Hunter series, you already know much of this. If you’re new to the series, you’ll get to see the origins of a character that has been slowly developing–and getting into trouble–as an adult in the main series. I’d read nothing about Infinity before starting it, so I was nicely surprised by a bit of a twist that I won’t spoil here. I love it when books surprise me!

This is the first book in the Chronicles of Nick series, which is a spin-off of Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter paranormal romance series. Per Sherrilyn Kenyon’s website, the Chronicles of Nick will run until the story intersects with Nick’s first appearance in the Dark-Hunter books, and then he’ll get his own novel in that series. If you aren’t already familiar with the Dark-Hunters world that Sherrily Kenyon has created, I think Infinity is a good introductory novel. It is listed as young adult, so it doesn’t have the paranormal romance (well, the romance) trappings of the series that spawned it, but it is an excellent introduction to the mythos of Kenyon’s world. Like any prequel that’s written after a series has been established, if you move from Infinity to the Dark-Hunter books, you’ll have some knowledge of the characters you might not have otherwise, just as I, as an established reader, probably picked up on hints in Infinity that a reader new to the world might not get. There are trade-offs either way. I wouldn’t let worries about it being a spin-off series keep you from the story. Nick’s brand of Cajun smart-ass is entertaining and endearing, and you truly don’t need to be familiar with the other books to enjoy Nick Gautier’s story.

My Review:

This is the first book I’ve read by Sherrilyn Kenyon and I was really enjoying the action, drama and humor she is a great writer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about the ups and downs of Nick Gautier as he struggles with the life he was born into. Things really picked up when people began munching on one another. For a zombie book, this one was good not too much gore when it came to what the Zombies were doing. I also enjoyed the back and forth between the teen Nick and the Elder Nick. We definitely learn he is destined for something bigger than having a dad in jail. I couldn’t put this book down at all, had me in stitches with the attitude Nick has.

We don’t have a release date nor do we know who any of the cast will be. Sherri has no control over the casting or the music chosen. They will consult her, but ultimately, it will be in the hands of Amber. She won’t be writing the scripts as she says it’s not her area of expertise and she’s not vain enough to think for one minute that she could do a screenplay justice. However, she will be working closely with the script writer and production staff to keep the movies and TV shows as close to the books as possible.

As always, we will keep everyone posted as soon as we have more information.

It appears that Kenyon has signed up to a partnership deal with Amber Entertainment to bring her back catalogue to the screen. The first up for adaptation is the Chronicles of Nick which begins with Infinity and will be made into a movie. It’s the young adult spin-off series from the Dark-Hunter adult series which, according to nFamous, will be the second project, turning it into a TV show and the Were Hunters will become an animated series.

All of these series share storylines and characters who all appear in the Dark-Hunter Universe so it’s difficult to see how these books/series, most of which are not suitable for younger audiences (Were-Hunters into an animated series -for children, I assume? That’s not right, surely?) can be split up into separate projects. I understand Kenyon is to be a producer with Ileen Maisel (Inkheart, The Golden Compass) and will be consulted but won’t have full control over how her works are interpreted so it’s hard to imagine there’ll be much left of the originals once plotlines and character backgrounds have been untangled, unravelled, reconstituted and edited enough to be appropriate for the screen. Unless they plan to have some sort of continuity between projects but I worry there won’t be enough left for fans to recognise once we sit down to watch the results.

Amber’s previous projects include transferring the very popular Inkheart (movie) and The Golden Compass (movie) young adult books from page to screen, combined they have 77,000 ratings on IMDB.com with similar average ratings of 6/10, with many critics and fans panning the adaptations. Due to their negative receptions there were no movie sequels despite there being plenty of material as both were part of trilogies. We’ll have to wait and see if the Kenyon projects do any better.

I couldn’t even read halfway through this novel. It wasn’t atrocious, but to me, it was terribly offensive. (Well, that, and it’s kind of overdue a week at my library…)

Nick, an “ordinary” kid who has to scarf his way out of the gutter he lives in to attend some preppy school with what high class society calls “decent” people, finds that his life is much more complex than it(should) needs to be. Vampire, Werewolves, Zombies–Oh My!

However, I highly disliked the book,or rather the portion I read of the book, because of two main things:

a) The stereotypes that the novel places on people are extremely offensive to me. Jocks, Emos, Goths, Special Ed kids, nerds, hot chicks. I’m sorry, what’s the point of this book again? Oh, yeah. I don’t really care because there are so many typical stereotypes of teenagers and the horrible things that preppy catholic school kids do, that I’m just so engrossed in this beautiful novel! *eyeroll*

b) The writing. The author spelled things out to you in such a way that one would think that the reader was stupid. I felt stupid while reading it. Making your readers feel worthless is usually not what a writer aims to do.

However, I can’t say much against Sherrilyn Kenyon, as I have not read her other works, which might be better than Infinity. But I defiantly won’t be picking up the next Chronicles of Nick novel, that’s for sure.

My Rating: 10/10

Sherrilyn Kenyon wrote an amazing novel about killing zombies, high school love and an epic beginning of Nick Gautier!

Nick Gautier is fourteen and…well, the usual victim of the jocks’ shove-them-to-the-lockers.

He lives with his mother in a run-down condo, his father is in jail and doesn’t acknowledge him as his son. He loves his mother, and he’d die to protect her. Oedipal?? Not really.

He’s as sarcastic as nobody else could ever be, except his friend; Acheron Parthenopaeus.

He doesn’t believe in the supernatural, until he’s forced to be veiled in a full-frontal zombie attacks. Not dead, but half dead. Gross.

In Infinity, the first book of the Chronicles of Nick, Kenyon created an impressive character. Nick Gautier is charming and attractive in his own way that doesn’t require Kenyon to describe him as the usual prince charming with blue eyes and blond hair.

What I really like about Infinity was of course; Nick Gautier. To be specific, his personality and his ultra-sarcastic remarks. It’s mind-engaging and funny. He’s an extraordinary character and exceptionally interesting.

What I dislike from the book? The ending! Yes, I know this is book one…but to say that, means that I’m unsatisfied! I literally crave more of the pages (unlike Simi–a character who keeps craving human/zombie’s blood…). I really can’t wait until the 2nd book comes out in Japan. (But by then I’d probably be in Japan already….T-T I wish I still get the review copy anyway…can I..? LOL.)
