Hell, a guy in a koala suit even hassles me about saving his species. Yet no one ever talks about saving rainbows, even though this cause may be more important than any other.

When I was a kid, we were told in church that rainbows were a symbol of god’s promise to never flood the earth again. My less religious friends were adamant that, no, there was gold at the end of them there rainbows, or at least a leprechaun or something. Now as an adult, they are the symbol of tolerance and gay pride. When did rainbows ask to be categorised? Why can’t we just let them be a cool thing that hangs in the sky around rainstorms?

Thankfully, graphic designer Chuck Anderson has rescued the rainbow from its pigenholed existence and started using the seven colours in marvellously unexpected ways. Such as in Lights for Drowning (above), which makes me feel like there’s a million parties going on and I haven’t been invited to any of them. Kind of like New Years Eve, where everyone is having fabulous parties yet at the same time wondering whether there was a better option somewhere else.

Anderson has released a new book, Wandering Off Into Space, which is full of his trademark surreal rainbows, trippy light effects and hypercolour spectrums.

So thank you, Chuck, for saving the rainbow.

Pride is usually a vice. However, Proverbs 17:6 says that it’s a normal and healthy thing for children to glory in their fathers. I do glory in you, Dad. I’m proud of you.

My Dad grew up in (and out) of a home split by alcohol and strife. When he was very young he was sent from his Michigan home to live with his (old school, authoritarian) aunt and uncle in Durango, Colorado. It was a tough time, but one God would use both to build Dad’s character and to give him a love for Colorado. He eventually returned to Michigan where, by God’s grace, he came to Christ at a Youth for Christ meeting on his 16th birthday. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. The Lord gave my Dad an insatiable appetite for the Scripture during his time in the military, an appetite that continues unabated to this day. The Lord also began the process of chiseling off Dad’s rough edges, like the time when Dad was witnessing to a friend and pointed to a Bible verse with his cigarette-laden fingers. An ash fell off and burned a hole in the Bible, giving the friend a reason to laugh hysterically and giving Dad a reason to quit smoking.

After his time in the Marine Corps, Dad returned to Michigan to attend Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music (GRSBM). While there, he met and won the heart of my wonderful mother. After finishing school, they wed, honeymooned in Colorado, and set their sites on returning to Colorado as frontier church planters. This they did, and without raising any financial support.

Dad’s ministry has been characterized by aggressive and innovative evangelism. He has led hundreds of people to the Lord Jesus Christ. One example is Bill Berg, a Jewish rabbi with whom Dad would watch our ballgames when we were young, always directing conversations to the OT prophecies of the Messiah. Bill eventually trusted Christ and committed himself to reaching fellow Jews with the truth that Jesus is the promised Messiah. That’s aggressive evangelism. You want innovative? “New Life Drive-In” ministered to literally thousands of people in Pueblo and Colorado Springs, showing feature Christian films like A Thief in the Night and A Distant Thunder for free to hundreds of families every Friday and Saturday night. (Yes, I did profess Christ almost weekly out of fear of missing the rapture. Call me scared…and scarred). “Guilty Yet Free” is a tract which Dad wrote to demonstrate the substitutionary death of Christ. It’s one of the best tracts I’ve ever read. “Camp Sonshine” is a day camp we ran in Colorado Springs for several years to reach young people with the gospel. “Discovery News” is Dad’s latest ministry idea, focusing on evidences of biblical creationism and history as an opportunity for gospel witness.

Dad’s ministry has also been characterized by tentmaking. He has supported his family over the years by designing church buildings. Despite having taken only a high school drafting class, Dad has designed hundreds of churches. (Two which many readers will be familiar with are Tri-City Baptist Church in Denver and Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, NH.) Dad’s ministry has extended beyond his own local churches, then, as he has ministered to hundreds of churches (including Tri-County Bible Church) on a consultant basis.

Finally, Dad’s ministry has been characterized by generosity. I’ve never known a more giving man in my life. I’m humbled by him. He’s perpetually poured money he really hasn’t had into needy ministries and families. Money has been a tool for Dad, never a trophy or treasure.

Last Sunday my Dad resigned from the pastorate at McCarol Bible Church in Denver, the fourth church which Mom and Dad either planted or “replanted” during their four decades of ministry together in Colorado. The first was in Widefield (Widefield Bible Church), the second in Pueblo (New Life Bible Church), the third (which my brother Jeff pastors) in Colorado Springs (Grace Bible Church), and the last in Denver (McCarol Bible Church). By God’s grace, all four of them are preaching the gospel today—a record that is all too uncommon in American church planting.

Dad has also pastored three sons, all of whom, by God’s grace, know the Lord and are serving Him in vocational ministry. Mom and Dad weren’t perfect, and neither were we. Indeed, there was a time during our teen years when we were in full-fledged rebellion, and they wisely stepped out of the ministry in order to shepherd us. Despite some rocky years, their godly influence made a lasting impression on their sons. Today, Jeff pastors in Colorado Springs, where he has been active in church planting. He has also been used of the Lord to preach to thousands of pastors in Uganda and India each year. Dan has been involved in three church plants in Brazil. He’s among the most faithful and effective missionaries I know. And I’m a church planting pastor in Ohio.

Dad, as you look toward new and exciting ministries in the days ahead, I want you to know that I’m proud of you. By God’s grace, you’re 7 for 7. You’ve poured your life into 4 churches and 3 sons, and all of them are continuing on for Christ. That’s God’s grace, but it’s God’s grace working through a godly man. You’ve committed what you’ve learned to faithful men, thereby multiplying your ministry. On more than one occasion, those churches (and sons) have lashed out at you. Each time, I’ve been amazed by your willingness to “take it” and, when necessary, move on for the good of the Kingdom. What a legacy you’ve left. What a trophy of God’s grace you are. I thank God for you. I’m grateful for the grace He has shown to me by allowing me to grow up under your instruction and example, and for allowing me to fellowship with you now. I’m grateful for the heritage my daughters and their 12 cousins have received.

“The glory of children is their fathers.” (Proverbs 17:6)

NoPattern (a.k.a. Chuck Anderson) is one of my fave artists ever. One of his prints, “Places You Can’t Imagine”, hangs above my bed.

Now, his website has (huzzah!) a promo for a new book of art, design, illustration, and photography he’s releasing, called “Wandering Off Into Space”,with (boo!) absolutely no details other than it’s coming in December 2008. It’s already the 17th. I need it now. I don’t need to know anything about it. If it’s from Chuck Anderson, then it’s awesomeness is guaranteed.

UPDATE: The book is now totally up for sale for the crazy reasonable price of only $25. Considering the quality of his work, Chuck is basically giving thie shit away for free. I’ve already ordered mine, and so should you. Right now. Plus there are some gorgeous new pics of the book as well. As if this wasn’t already all incentive enough, it’s been announced that a portion of the proceeds from the book are going to Invisible Children.

Yesterday was a very hectic day work wise, we had a lot of running around to do and not enough time

Yesterday was a very hectic day work wise, we had a lot of running around to do and not enough time to do it. We are in the process of choosing the hats that we’re going to print but the processes we want to use on them are just not available here in the U.S. The processes you see in today’s popular hats are ones that need to be done during the making of the hat and cannot be done after the hats been assembled. We really like to buy American if we can, but sometimes its just not a possibility. Check these out:

There not set in stone yet but we’ve got a few designs besides these that we’re thinking about making.

We recently received confirmation from 2 artists who are going to come on and do some design work for us, Chuck Anderson is a brilliant artist and photographer, the pieces he creates and his use of light trails in his work is really amazing, I don’t know how he does it. He’s worked for some major companies like Nike, Reebok, and Burton, check out his site, there is a Snow Boarding Jacket there that he created for Burton that you may have seen during the X Games a year or so ago called “Light Camo”. We also are happy to say that another artist has agreed to come on as well, Derek Lea is an award winning author and artist, he does all his animation and art work using Photoshop which is needless to say extremely difficult. Please view the sites of both these established artists, we are privileged to have the opportunity to work with them, I cant wait to see what they come up with.

I’m not exactly talking about new shapes and sizes necessarily but a few posts from friends and emails from other people reminded me that there have been so many interesting designs (some of them available to the great public) for the dull products that make our every day life.

Pepsi – which I’m not a fan of but who held a contest called ‘Design our Pepsi Can‘, inviting just about anyone to design a new can for their old products, Pepsi and Pepsi Light/Diet, doing the same for Mountain Dew (which sadly isn’t available in the UK) with their ‘Green Label Art’ (found out about this US thing from a guy that hangs out on an old design/nonsense forum, Chuck Anderson)

Coca Cola – who have released Diet Coke special editions designed by Patricia Field (with Sex and the City) in Selfridges & Co stores. Some interesting stuff going on for Coke Light (EU Diet) in Belgium all around this fashion thing. Like the ‘Coke Light Style’ from Romania a while ago. Some pictures of it over at psalmplasma if I’m not mistaken, along with a 30″ video. Also in Belgium, this artist called Wim Devoye has been doing some can designs…pretty creepy, yes. Obviously goes against all the stuff Coca Cola has been doing.

Beck’s – “that German beer” that’s been all about choices and you holding the key and such, with a ‘what would you choose’ campaign in various countries.

Absolut – Again, exclusive to Selfridges with ‘Show Your Colours‘

Then if you fancy seeing a neat Q-Pack design for a beer bottle in Romania, with a football included:

Any others that I’ve missed? I don’t remember any special designs seen in supermarkets but if you know any, would you kindly point them out?

I was reading ESPN magazine this morning and I was advertised to. It made an impression. Mountain Dew’s greenLabelart campaign crossed seven amazing artists to design six customized labels for Mountain Dew. Haze, Dez, Chuck Anderson, Peat Wolleager, Scott Lehardt, Danny Davis, Troy Denning are the great designers. BBDO New York is the brilliant agency that pushed for this idea. Mountain Dew, good for you for spending the budget because there’s no way this was cheap.

First, the art in the print is so eye catching it made me stop while reading a sports mag.

Then not an hour later I saw the Mounatain Dew: Drinkable Art spot and I noticed it. It made me remember the ad I just saw–to me this was a little crazy. These costumes were cool, the art was cool, and the direction kept me watching.

By then I had the ole laptop out so I went to greenLABELart.com. The music was nice. The movement was smooth. But what really stopped me where the first three words I read. INSPIRATION, EXPRESSION, CREATION–you got me, I’m staying and playing for a little while. Checked out the video on the side, pretty cool. It profiles the individual artists, and show them working on their designs–very smart, BBDO. These six different styles mesh on the shelf and dominate any the bland world of soda labels. These bottles all look great together.

Great creative. Great Campaign. Great Everything. Kudos.

To avoid colours ones life, then to be revealed to such vivid, unseen, flowing visuals is an experience to behold.
