Finally, I have plucked up the courage to write in my blog post! I guess I was finding it difficult to find subject matter, but I was surfing the web, looking for something nice to get my sister for her birthday next week, and I came across the Chumby.

The Chumby Is a cute little gizmo that is like a cross between an alarm clock and a computer. It is designed to be versatile and hackable but that does not mean you have to be a computer genius to work it close to its full potential. The Chumby, put simply, is your window into the internet.

There are two Chumbys – the Chumby Classic (picture above) and the Chumby One (picture below).

The Chumby connects to your domestic Wi-Fi signal and is similar to a little customizable computer, that has all your internet “needs” readily available at your fingertips. You download Widgets and navigate to them on the Chumby’s touch screen. There are over 1500 widgets available for the Chumby, form Email, stocks and weather to Facebook, internet radio (and a FM radio on the Chumby one), and google- all free. You can have all the information; News, Blogs, flicker, Facebook, myspace… Everything! without any distractions, except maybe form the music from Pandora playing in the background.

Sadly, my little sister wants an American Girl Doll, and not a Chumby… looks like I am going to have to save up for something twice as expensive that is completely useless!

The Chumby classic goes for just under $200 and the better but boxier Chumby One goes for just under $100.

Gli elettrodomestici sono capaci di fare: A) qualcosa che uno non ha voglia di eseguire a mano (lavastoviglie), B) qualcosa che uno da solo proprio non riesce (frigorifero). C’è però una terza categoria, che ha a che vedere con l’ibridazione: il fenomeno per cui uno prende una bestia e la fa accoppiare con un’altra simile ma non uguale, e insomma ottiene il mulo.

Uno nemmeno ci pensava, prima, che gli potesse servire, poi lo vede e dice: «Beh, non male questo mulo».

Ecco, il Chumby è un mulo, un ibrido, un mescolone sapiente di molti altri affari, che non fa niente meglio degli originali ma fa tutto benino, tanto che si finisce per volergli bene. Lui ci mette del suo da subito, perché si presenta come un incrocio morbidoso tra un navigatore satellitare, una radiosveglia e una borsa in pelle per il tabacco da pipa.

Il Chumby è tozzo, molle, ricoperto di pelle, e arriva addirittura in un sacchetto di juta: nasconde la sua natura digitale e ostenta le cuciture.

La prima volta che l’ho preso in mano l’ho ciancicato un po’, come fosse un gattino, e vedo che la stessa cosa hanno fatto tutti gli amici a cui l’ho mostrato. Davanti sembra la tv dei Teletubbies, dietro ha due altoparlanti, un tasto di reset, la presa di alimentazione e due porte usb. Da schiacciare ci sono solo un tastone tipo radiosveglia sopra, nascosto nel morbido, e lo schermo. Lo schermo è luminoso e touch, e quando lo accendi comincia a chiedere delle cose, tipo che ore sono e dov’è una connessione wireless.

Ecco, se non hai una connessione wireless il Chumby non funziona. Se ce l’hai, bene (anche se la prima volta si diventa un po’ matti con l’impostazione, ma poi, quando funziona, funziona per sempre).

Il Chumby ha le stesse opzioni di posizionamento di una radiosveglia: comodino, scrivania, cucina, al limite anche bagno, se ci state molto. Sul mio comodino il

Chumby ha dato le previsioni del tempo, ha monitorato lo stato di Facebook, Twitter e FriendFeed (un’altra roba per spettegolare tra semisconosciuti), ha fatto da visore di video scemi di YouTube che non ti devi neanche alzare dal letto e poi da radiosveglia snob.

Cos’è una radiosveglia snob? È quando uno non vuole sentire le radio nazionali come buongiorno – manco per sogno! – e allora col Chumby può decidere di farsi svegliare dalle notizie della Cbs, della Bbc, del telegiornale indiano o dalla musica di una delle radio che affollano la rete a milioni.

Ciò che entra nel Chumby è a discrezione dell’utente, che può andare in una pagina personale su chumby.com e scegliere i widget, i programmini da inserire nella macchina. Ce ne sono milioni, alcuni cazzoni e altri deliziosi. C’è talmente tanta roba che una ragione per dire a voi stessi «no, non è una scemenza inutile, non ho buttato via i soldi» la troverete di sicuro.

Un po’ come quel contadino che si accorse tardi della storia infuocata tra l’asino e la cavalla e, insomma, poco dopo dovette trovare tante cose da far fare al suo nuovo, inedito quadrupede.

After about an hour of playtime with the final version of the squishable $180 Wi-Fi widget ball chumby, I want one on my desk. Is it essential gadgetry? No. It’s not meant to be. Until you’re addicted to it.

If you’re not familiar with the basic premise, chumby is a Wi-Fi gadget with a touchscreen centered around widgets. Think little snippets of the internet that it automatically picks up after you’ve subscribed to them, kind of like mini-channels. Like Chuck Norris facts. Or the weather, or MySpace, which has a pretty rich widget actually—you can add or delete friends, check out pictures or whatever. You don’t pay a monthly subscription for access, BTW. [read]

[Andrew Rapp] sent in this project called Droplet. He’s been doing work with Xbees and Arduinos together and built this little toy. He describes it as “sort of like a Chumby”. It has built in services for Twitter, Google Calendar, News, Gmail, etc.  You can download the full source code and plans on his site. His next planned revisions include possibly running it from a sheevaplug, making a nice case for it, and utilizing the unused pins of the arduino.

そういうの、意外とないような気がするし、どんどんやって欲しいというか
製品におけるブランド価値自体も、人々の注目を浴びることによって、上がっていくんじゃないかと思うんですけど

37- به دیگران این اجازه را بدهید که بر مبنای پلاتفرم و اطلاعات شما به صورت قانونی ، بتوانند همکاری کنند . بهترین مکان برای شروع ، جایی است که شما تا هر میزانی که امکانپذیر است به مشترکین خلاق خود مجوز فعالیت روی محصولاتتان را بدهید تا جایی که با قانون حق انحصاری اختراع یا کپی رایت منافات نداشته باشد . متاُسفانه ، تجارت های قرن بیستم و مدل های مختلف آن در ارتباط با قانون و سوابق قضایی دچار مشکلاتی هستند و شما همیشه مجبور هستید به عنوان مرجع به پیشگامان بازار نگاه کنید تا ببینید آنها با مجوزهای IP چگونه کار می کنند .

این خیلی مهم است که همواره به خاطر داسته باشیم این دوران ، دوران حفظ برخی از حقوق است نه همگی آنها . پس با فراغ بال در مورد آنچه مال خود شماست به دیگران مجوز بدهید . قانون کلی موفقیت اینست : از هر دست بدهی از همان دست پس می گیری (هرچه بیشتر ببخشی ، بیشتر نصیبت می شود) تا زمانی که معنی اعمال کنترل را بفهمی . به همین خاطر است که تمام ابزارهای آنلاین اینسان همگانی شده اند. از زمانی که   ضرورتاُ   “IP as a service”  و محدودیت های دیگر کمرنگ تر شدند و به راحتی و سرعت می توان از مجوز ها و قرارداد ها گذشت .

38- محصول خود را طوری طراحی کنید که تاثیر شبکه ای پر قدرتی داشته باشد . حقیقت تاُثیرگذاری شبکه را قبلاُ به اندازه کافی شرح داده بودم و باز تکرار می کنم که مهمترین نکته در لیست است . با یک نگاه پایه ای ، متوجه می شویم ابزارهای وب 2.0 بخاطر آن موفق شده اند که از تاُثیرات شبکه ای به عنوان اهرم اصلی استفاده کرده اند . این یک دلیل واضح و پرمعنی است که شرکت های پیشتاز اینترنتی در چشم بر هم زدنی اینقدر بزرگ می شوند !!

اندازه گیری تاُثیرات شبکه و نحوه هدایت آنها همچنان یکی از دانسته های بسیار ضعیف و تا حدی بحرانی باقی مانده است . مخصوصاُ در رقابت های آنلاین !!

در یک کلام : رقابت کردن در زمینه تاُثیرات شبکه ای بسیار دشوار است (مخصوصاُ چون تحقیقات در مورد آنها نشان داده ، بسیار پرطرفدار هستند ) بجای آن نوعی از اطلاعات یا بازار آرام و جدیدی را برای محصول خود پیدا کنید و این شما باشید که اطلاعات به دیگران میدهید .

39- در مورد web 2.0 حالت ها و مدل های مختلف آن اطلاعات کافی کسب کنید . اصول زیر بنایی وب 2.0 شناسایی و جمع آوری شده اند .هر کدام از اصول ، باید جداگانه و به دقت در هنگام طراحی محصولات مورد توجه قرار گیرد تا از تاُثیرگذاری شبکه نهایت بهره برداری را بکنید . تیم فنی و توسعه دهنده شما باید نسبت به این موضوعات آگاهی کافی داشته باشند و دقیقاُ بدانند که چرا اهمیت دارد و از این طریق میتوان محصولاتی طراحی کرد که نتایج آن برای تجارت شما موفقیت به همراه داشته باشد .

این محصولات بسیار شبیه محصولات Enterprise 2.0 (این کلمه به معنای بنگاه اقتصادی است ، اما ترجمه فارسی که دقیقا منظور نویسنده را منعکس کند ، نمیتوان برای آن ارائه کرد ، چون منظور نوع خاصی از محصولات تجاری آنلاین است -مترجم )هستند : نوع دیگری از محصولات با اصول طراحی شبیه که آنها را موفق تر می کند . و همانند بقیه نکات ذکر شده در این لیست ، این ابزار را واکنشی استفاده نکنید ، آنها باید بطور هوشمندانه ای برای مقاصد خوب استفاده شوند .

40- در محصول خود مجموعه ای منسجم از تجارب اجتماعی را طراحی کنید . سیستمهای اجتماعی تمایل به ایفای نقش بیشتری از تأثیرات شبکه ای دارند (نسبت به سیستمهای غیر اجتماعی) . اگرچه هیچ سایتی نباید بدون دلیل خوبی شبکه اجتماعی باشد ، اما اینگونه به نظر می رسد که اکثر ابزارهای آنلاین از اجتماعی بودن می توانند بهره بگیرند . در واقعیت این گفته به چه معناست ؟ بطور کلی ، ابزارهای اجتماعی به کاربران این اجازه را می دهند تا متوجه فعالیت های کاربران دیگر شده و نتیجتاُ تشویق شوند که عکس العمل نشان دهند ، با یکدیگر فعالیتی را شروع کنند و در خلال این تشویق ها و رقابت ها مهارت های مشارکتی اجتماعی شان تقویت شود .

برای طراحی معماری یک محصول اجتماعی طرحهای هنری زیادی وجود دارد ، اما علم مربوط به آن در حال تکامل و زیاد شدن است . تکرار می کنم ، شما می توانید سایت های موفق را نگاه کنید و بررسی کنید که آنها به چه کاری مشغولند ، مخصوصاُ باز خوردهای اجتماعی شان را . اما بهترین نقطه برای شروع ، استفاده از پروفایل کاربران ، لیست دوستان ، جریان فعالیت های روزمره ، پیام های شرح وضعیت (status msgs) و فعالیت های آنلاین اجتماعی همانند وبلاگ نویسی و اشتراک گذاری فایل است . بررسی کنید چرا facebook و شبکه های اجتماعی دیگر بر تجربه شما در ارتباطات و روابط اجتماعی تان اینگونه تاُثیر گذار هستند ؟

41- مدل تجاری خودتان را مشخص کرده و طراحی محصولتان را بر مبنای آن انجام دهید . ابزارهای آنلاین بسیاری با این هدف که باعث جذب ترافیک بسیاری شده و پس از آن توسط یک علاقه مند به قیمت بالایی خریداری شوند ، تولید شده اند . در مقابل هستند محصولاتی که صادقانه کاربران را شارژ می کنند تا در بحران نیفتند . زمانیکه راه های برون رفت از بحران را مجسم می کنید و یا حتی مدل نهایی تجاری تان را برنامه ریزی می کنید ، قبل از انجام هر حرکتی بهتر است بدانید شرکت های نوپای بیشماری با جدیت و شدت زیادی مشغول به کار هستند و همگی در این اندیشه هستند که چگونه می توانند تجارت خود را در آینده نزدیک به موفقیت برسانند . مقاله Andrew chen را در مورد چگونگی ساختن یک کمپانی نوپای ارائه دهنده خدمات اولیه بصورت مجانی ، بخوانید که یک مثال خوب است برای طراحی مدل تجاری و چهارچوب هایش . در مورد شرایط اقتصادی و رکود حال حاضر وقت صرف کنید و مطمئن باشید که می توانید به مردم و تجارت ها در این فضای خاص اقتصادی کمک کنید .

42- روش های رشد در آینده را همواره مدنظر داشته باشید . در حالیکه بهترین محصولات وب اکثراُ توسط بهترین طراحان و با یک دیدگاه روشن و شفاف از خود ، محصول و صنعتشان تولید شده اند ، در دیگر سوی این معادله ، کیفیت طراحی های بعدی در یک محیط باز می تواند رشد کند (منظور وجود این قابلیت است که ارتقاء محصول براحتی انجام پذیرد) بدین معنی که محصول شما همانند اکوسیستم قابلیت فطری پذیرش چندین مرجع مختلف را داشته باشید ، علی الخصوص آنهایی که قابلیت ارتباط پذیری از طریق چندین نقطه با گسترش دهنده های خارجی و یا اشخاص حقیقی داشته باشند .

هر یک از ابزارهای وب در صورتیکه قابلیت رشد درونی یا گسترش پذیری توسط پلاگ این ها(plug-ins) ، ویدجت ها(widget) ، ابزارهای متن باز(open APIs) ، ابزار های همکار ودیگر را توسط یک شخص سوم داشته باشند، براحتی قابلیت رشد و پیشرفت خواهد داشت . ایجاد و طراحی یک محصول خوب در قابلیت رشدپذیری ساده و چندین ورودی پذیرفتن آن نهفته است .

همه اینها در حالی است که همچنان میزانی از کنترل بالا به پایین وجود دارد ، مخصوصاُ در ماهیت ابزار . اما در نهایت ابزار شما به یک ابزاری بسیار بزرگتر و پخته تر از داده های خام اولیه تبدیل می شود . محصولات drupal و facebook مثال های خوبی هستند که هزاران پلاگ این و ابزار آنلاین توسط اشخاص دیگر به آنها اضافه شده اند و از این طریق توسعه دهندگان به فعالیت مشغول شده اند .

43- این قسمت تماماُ مربوط به قابلیت کاربردی محصول است ، کاربردی و قابل استفاده بودن  . در خلال این مقاله به این نکته اشاره کرده بودم اما می خواهم آنرا در رده های اول اهمیت قرار دهم . هیچ چیزی بیشتر از این مانع پذیرش شما نمی شود که کاربر متوجه طرز استفاده از محصول شما نشود . و هیچکدام از مطالب این فهرست مهم نخواهد بود تا زمانیکه طرز استفاده از محصول شما مشخص بشود . شایع ترین مشکلی که توسعه دهندگان وب پشت در پشت به ارث می گذارند ، آنکه تجربه کاربران را جدا در نظر می گیرند .   اگر شما سرمایه گذاری برای راه اندازی آزمایشگاه قابلیت های استفاده از محصولتان را نمی پذیرید ، پس اعضای خانواده ، دوستان و آشنایان را برای بررسی قابلیت های استفاده از محصول بکار بگیرید و ببینید آنها در اولین برخورد از محصول شما چگونه استفاده می کنند .

پس از هر تغییری که در محصول خود می دهید ، این آزمایشات و بررسی ها را تکرار کنید تا از این بابت خیالتان راحت شود . در این بین شما با فرضیه های زیاد و غیر قابل تصوری روبرو می شوید و آنچه از نظرات و دیدگاه های کاربران می شنوید ، پیش از  آنکه بخواهید سرمایه گذاری بیشتری کرده باشید ، دیدگاه شما را تغییر می دهد . پس همواره در کنار تجربیات استفاده کنندگان از محصول خود باشید . و این مسئله حتی اگر شما یک کمپانی توسعه دهنده ابزار های وب هم هستید ، کاملاُ مهم و قابل توجه است .

44- امنیت موضوعی نیست که بعدها راجع به آن فکر کنید . نکته ناراحت کننده آنست که اکثر شرکتهای نوپا و موفق ، باید زمان زیادی را روی مقوله امنیت صرف کنند  . مخصوصاُ اگر با عامه مردم سر و کار داشته باشید ، هدف فایل های کینه جویانه زیادی قرار خواهید گرفت که script kiddie  نامیده می شوند و یا با هدف دستیابی به اطلاعات مشتریان شما ارسال  می شوند . آسیب پذیری نرم افزارها بسیار زیاد هستند و زمینه ابزارهای آنلاین تحت وب ،  بسیار وسیع . شما فقط مشتریان محصولات خود را ندارید ، بلکه ابزارهای مختلف ، ویدجت ها ، ارتباطات وب معنایی ، ابزارهای شبکه های اجتماعی ، و نقاط زیاد دیگری برای حمله به شما وجود دارد .  زمان و هزینه جداگانه ای برای ارزیابی آسیب پذیری های روزمره تان در نظر بگیرید . شما نمی توانید یک پخش شدن اطلاعات مشتریان را در نتیجه فرصت طلبی و استفاده از ضعف های امنیتی تان برای کشف اطلاعات کاربران توجیه کنید و نهایتاُ با کاربران زیادی روبرو خواهید شد که شما را ترک خواهند کرد .ابزارهای web 2.0 نیاز به سیستم های امنیتی منحصر بفردی دارند ، از محدودیتهای طبقه بندی اطلاعات تا جلوگیری از فاش شدن اطلاعات باارزش کاربران . حتی اطلاعات کاربرانی که دیگر به آن نیازی ندارید و می خواهید آنها را از بین ببرید هم بسیار مهم است و باید سیستم شما یک قابلیت منحصر بفردی داشته باشد تا اطلاعات از بین رفته به هیچ عنوان برگشت پذیر و قابل بازیابی نباشند . این اطلاعات توسط نرم افزاری که موارد شکایت و در تضاد با کپی رایت را بررسی می کند ، قابل ردیابی است .

45- بصورت دوره ای و قبل از آنکه سایت بالا بیاید ، فشار را روی سایت امتحان کنید . این یک مثال معروف در تجارت است که مشکل بعدی دقیقاُ بعد از یک موفقیت با ارزش در انتطار شماست . قبل از اجرای کامل سایت ، همه قسمت ها را کامل در آزمایشگاه امتحان کنید . در عرصه web2.0 این یک مشکل معمولی است که سایت ها در اولین خیز ترافیکی ، زمین می خورند(از کار می افتند) . این زمان بدترین لحظه شکست خوردن است ، چون بهترین شانس شما برای اثر گذاری شبکه ای است و ممکن است شانس شما برای موفقیت ، برای همیشه کاهش یابد . تمامی محدودیت های حجمی خود را بدانید و خود را برای بدترین حالت ممکن آماده کنید .

46- برای اتفاقات ناگوار همیشه آماده باشید و از اطلاعاتتان back up تهیه کنید . این یک حقیقت غیر قابل انکار برای هر محصول آنلاین هست . هر چند وقت یکبار پشتیبان تهیه می کنید؟ آیا پشتیبان هایتان را امتحان می کنید؟ آیا از آنها خارج از دسترس نگهداری می کنید؟ اگر پاسخی برای این سؤال ها ندارید ، شانس شما برای ادامه دادن در سختی ها و مشکلات زیاد نیست .

47- محصولات خوب وب خیلی فراتر از وب می اندیشند .آیا شما یک ابزار (widget) برای ویستا یا مک بر روی کامپیوتر های رومیزی دارید؟ ممکن است شما از پیشنهاد یکی از ابزارهای خود به کاربران adobe AIR منتفع شوید . به معرفی و حضور در دنیای سرگرمی و بازیهای کامپیوتری اندیشیده اید؟ چطور است به RFID (امواج رادیویی) یا GPS متصل شوید ؟ نوآفرینانی که خارج از چهارچوب فکر می کنند ، می توانند حتی وسیله ای اختراع کنند که احساس را برانگیزد (مثل chumby یا آیفون/آی پد)

اگر فقط یک کلام مطمئن وجود داشته باشد ، آنست که نسل جدید نوآوری در وب به آنچه امروز وب می شناسیم شباهت کمی دارد . محصولات آنلاین موفق در آینده ، از مزایای “نرم افزاری با قابلیت های بیشتر از یک ابزار معمولی” برخوردار بوده و قابلیت هایی بسیار متنوع ، کاربردی و جدید را حتی خارج از حد انتظارات ارائه خواهند کرد . یک محصول web2.0 فوق العاده معمولاُ بر اساس یک محصول قدیمی تر وب به عنوان چهارچوب کلی برای طراحی ساخته می شود . برای درک بهتر نگاهی بیندازید به Doritos crash the superbowl canpagn

48- همواره به حاشیه های وب جاهایی که قسمت ها و ایده های جدیدی پدیدار می شود ، نگاهی داشته باشید . همیشه در آن قسمت ها اتاق های زیادی برای بازیگران جدید با ایده های ناب در انتظار است . جاهایی هستند که تأثیرات شبکه به طور کامل اعمال نشده و سهمی از بازار برای تسخیر شدن آماده است .

Shriraj Gaglani, a senior director of business development for Broadcom,  thinks Chumby will get consumers psyched about accessing the web through their TVs.

He likens the Chumby platform to a cell phone’s application store and says, “What we’ve felt we lacked in the ecosystem is the critical mass of apps and services that can leverage broadband televisions.”

For anyone who recalls the Chumby as a countertop device for accessing widgets, you’re thinking of the right company. It’s merely joining a growing pack of those looking expand its efforts beyond hardware to become a platform. In January it signed a similar integration deal with Marvell (s MRVL) to get its widget platform onto digital picture frames. It’s one of a handful of integration deals Broadcom has inked with software vendors to port their content to its chips. As broadband reaches more devices, deals between chipmakers and software vendors like these are becoming increasingly important.

For anyone who recalls the Chumby as a countertop device for accessing widgets, you’re thinking of the right company. It’s merely joining a growing pack of those looking expand its efforts beyond hardware to become a platform. In January it signed a similar integration deal with Marvell (s MRVL) to get its widget platform onto digital picture frames.

Such heightened integration efforts are a natural outgrowth of adding broadband to phones, TVs, set-top boxes or even picture frames, because when you add broadband, you add the Internet. And as the mobile world has shown, no one wants a bastardized version of a “mobile web” or a “TV web;” they want the real deal. So that means the chips powering these devices need to be smarter, and have the right software to deliver a web-like experience on a screen that doesn’t belong to the PC.

Other examples on the TV side include Intel (s intc) teaming up with Yahoo (s YHOO) to deliver Yahoo’s television widget platform on the chip giant’s semiconductors for set-top boxes. Sigma Designs, a competitor in the digital television space, also has a deal to port Flash Lite properly to its chips. Broadcom does, too.

With that in mind, Broadcom’s decision to add Chumby is a nice way for the platform to gain traction in TVs or in set-top boxes, because it won’t have to go to each television maker to get integrated into the device (though notably the TV makers can disable the Chumby integration on their Broadcom chips if they feel like it).

Shriraj Gaglani, a senior director of business development for Broadcom, also thinks Chumby will get consumers psyched about accessing the web through their TVs. I’m not sure if an App Store-like option will make the difference given that most consumers in the U.S. get their TV programming and set-top boxes from a cable provider that may disable such functionality. Broadcom has integrated other platforms on its DTV and set-top box chips but cannot disclose them. When I asked if Broadcom was integrating any platforms built by MSOs or carriers into its chips, Gaglani declined to discuss it.

Aside from making a bet on delivering the web to televisions, this deal underlies the prominence of Adobe’s Flash platform for viewing video online. When asked if Broadcom has any integration deals with Microsoft’s (s MSFT) Silverlight platform (a competitor to Flash), Gaglani said, “We don’t have anything to announce on that.”

I’m one of those people who dreams of the days when, upon waking, a pleasant, synthesized voice announces the weather, our schedule for the day and all that business (think Jarvis in Iron Man or S.A.R.A.H. in Eureka).

If I wanted to have my computer talk to me in the morning, I could do something like this. However, there’s no way to have my MacBook rattle off the weather or my agenda (although, if I told it to say “School: 8:15 AM to 3:45 PM. That is all.”, it’d probably be right 90% of the time). Also, if you’ve played with your Mac’s speech settings lately, you’ve probably noticed that none of the voices really fall into the “pleasant” category.

Considering that Pipe Organ is the zenith of our current progress in the synthesized voice field, it might be best to stick with a less chatty morning briefing system for the time being. Short of hiring a personal assistant (I would totally settle for my own Pepper Potts), Chumby seems like a pretty slick system. Basically, you keep the cute little duffer by your bed and it makes a lot of noise when you tell it to (i.e., it’s an alarm clock) and then it plays a stream of information including weather, your email inbox, Facebook updates, Google Calendar agenda, and, of course, Chuck Norris facts. In theory, it sounds pretty swell, but there’s a couple things that make this $200 alarm clock sub-par.

The biggest problem with the Chumby is its internet connection. Since basically everything is stored on the Web (rather than on the device itself), the Chumby can only do four things without an internet connection: 1) display the time, 2) do its whole alarm thing, 3) play music from your iPod or computer and 4) be cuddly. This wouldn’t really be that big of a deal if the internet connection wasn’t so flaky. My Chumby loses its connection much more often than my computer or iTouch and when I try to reconnect, it frequently doesn’t work.

Even when I can get the Chumby connected, another problem presents itself. At 6:00 AM on a weekday in the pitch black and freezing cold of a winter morning, I suddenly find that squinting at my calender or the weather isn’t as fascinating as I thought it was (especially when the latter is easily summarized as “damn cold”). Granted, this isn’t really the Chumby’s fault, but I can’t help but think that a nice big LCD monitor next to my bed would improve on the concept.

The default clock (i.e., the only one which works without a Web connection) isn’t too hot either. It’s low contrast and fairly small, so I can’t see what time it is from across the room (without my contacts, at least).

Of course, Chumby has his good qualities, he can play Pandora (often haltingly due to a poor wireless connection), he can play music from my iPod (although, it doesn’t work with my iTouch, just my old Nano. Oh, and it can’t play anything with DRM). My Chumby’s coolest function (arguably) may also be the creepiest: With the right widget, you can view the feed from random security cams around the world.  While the footage of snow-covered Helsenki streets isn’t exactly exciting, there are some more interesting feeds mixed in.  It’s great preparation for a career as a security guard.

Really though, after seeing just how bad things can get when S.A.R.A.H. malfunctions, maybe I should be counting my lucky stars that the cute little Chumby doesn’t holler at/try to kill me when it malfunctions.

Remember the Chumby, the Internet enabled multimedia player, touch screen device that looked a little like an alarm clock? Well now you can also get your hands on a Nabaztag, an Internet enabled plastic rabbit!

The Nabaztag communicates by flashing lights and actually speaking to you, it can read you news, emails, and even books.  Amongst many other things it can even send out emails and text messages on your behalf.

The Nabaztag is created by violet who have created a series of Internet enabled products which aim to bring us a truly augmented reality, giving us the benefits of the digital world in the real world.  If they have their way everything in our lives will be connected to the Internet.

If you’re from the UK you still can’t buy a Chumby, but the Nabaztag is widely available. Or you could just wait a few years when you’ll struggle to find products that don’t connect to the Internet.

Chumby as an e-learning platform

Imagine a free Open International WORLD University with the greatest technical minds as teachers.  It is free. All you  have to do is subscribe to the graduate course in ‘Human Anatomy 201′ or ‘ Networking Course 201′.  The content is delivered on a Wi-fi gadget that you have to buy.

The student subscribes to Learning ‘Widgetized’  Feeds from different universities. His Wi-fi device (chumby) delivers daily lesson plans, Flash based graphics, PowerPoint’s, video presentations, multiple choice questions, quizzes, webinars,  his university face-book page, related blogs from other students or teachers.

Student also recieved upgrades and free e-learning content from different websites that ‘it’ THINKS the student may be interested in. It becomes the educational advisor to the student. An artificially intelligent device powered by corporates and universities.

The  student reads his or her study paper while brushing their teeth or eating breakfast. The wi-fi e-LEARNING PLATFORM is always connected.  Chumby becomes an intelligent educational co-coordinator delivering only related content from wikipedia, different blogs and suggesting other university subscription’s that can be added to the personalized  study ‘page’ everyday.

Subscription for 20 dollars a month, and the cost price of 200 dollars for the open source device. Not bad,  considering the student can hold a full time job and take his ‘lessons’ with him to Starbucks, office, place of work or the kitchen!

There is another possible scenario! The student can choose where they want the e-learning feeds. Imagine chumby technology embedded in the HDTV’s,  mobile phones, Blu ray players, Refrigerators and picture frames.

Chumbification of gadgets  make them a multi functional e-learning and entertainment devlice  delivering widgets, entertainment, educational webinars, widgetized university content and educational Flash video presentations. The Chumby gadgets automatically pick up ‘related’ widgets on your specialized subject of study.

The educational content providers can deliver multiple choice quizzes online or have the students e-mail their papers.  Students go to local colleges or universities for their practicals or clinical for only four hours a week. Chumby gadget informs them every day of the hours they have put in, their scores, percentage of course completed and the progress of their fellow students.

Unfortunately, not many educational institutions, universities and e-learning platform providers are  thinking about providing content through open source platforms.  Delivering free or subscribed content on a students television, mobile phone or a chumby gadget is too new to grasp. It may cost too much.

It is true that ‘freeing’ the content may not make enough money.  After all, education is also a ‘business’.  However, with intelligent marketing and longe term goals, widgetizing existing e-learning content and offering it through subscription which is ‘fed’ on the electronic device everyday can make money in the long run.  Cost reduction will happen through fewer tenured professors, repetition of  some  content, and having the students pay for the quizzes and practicals or labs. By charging for certifications and exams and NOT for the content. The electronic gadget manufacturers can also sponsor part of the ‘course’. After all, their gadgets will sell as a multi-functional device that delivers entertainment, education and news.

Sir Howard Stinger, CEO of Sony Corporation at his keynote address at CEO said, “The lines between CE, IT and entertainment have been blurring for some time. We must now accept that this fusion is reality – and that today’s devices must be created to interact seamlessly across our industries.”  He also said “our products must be multi-functional…so that consumers can access,manage and organize many different types and sources of content”

Everyone has the right to an education. We are alarmed at how American kids are not interested in maths and science.  If content is delivered in a format the generation X and Y are used to, chances are they might be interested in pursuing higher studies.

Generation Y are handling laptops, wi-fi gadgets and consumer electronics from a very young age.  They will NOT be satisfied with traditional campus education. My three year old prefers to color e-books on computer rather than use crayons.

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Chumby unveiled their latest prototype. It’s a network connected digital picture frame that runs Flash widgets. Just like the current Chumby model, they’re publishing the software and hardware under a license designed to let you hack it. They let us borrow one of their open chassis evaluation kits to teardown and photograph. We’ve got more pictures, full specs, and the schematics below.

The new version has an 800×600 LCD touchpanel. They’re still using an open source Linux backend, but they’ve updated the UI. Chumby widgets are now managed on the device. Before, users had to log into the website and then have their chosen widgets pushed down to the Chumby. The software is designed so that it could be a user’s primary photo management application. It instantly recognizes inserted memory cards and lets users drag and drop photos into the widget playlist. The device integrates seamlessly with PhotoBucket letting you easily upload new galleries. You can send these to other Chumby users (Chums) as well.

Keep in mind that this is just an evaluation kit, so it’s mounted in a generic wooden photo frame.

On the left side are stereo speakers connected to the onboard amplifier. The large orange ribbon at the bottom contains all of the display electronics. The lower connector on the right edge powers the backlight. The upper four wire ribbon is for the touchscreen. The cutout at the top is for the USB WiFi card. The coincell holder is battery backup for the real time clock. There are two control panel buttons along the top.

The board includes several headers to make debugging easier. The pins in the lower left provide a serial console (detail). The larger grouping is the CPU JTAG. Next to that is an MMC port for the initial boot image. The cryptoprocessor also has a JTAG connector.

Flipping the board over you can see the optional video camera daughter card.

The silkscreen next to the RAM on the front side says this board version is Stormwind v8.0 revC.

The front side of the board is where most of the interesting bits are. The reset and user buttons are located in the upper left. Next to that is an SD card socket and a CF card socket. The power jack and microphone are on the upper right corner along with the amplifier circuitry. Below the CF is a TSOP socket holding a Hynix HY27UF081G2A-TP memory device. Under that is the main processor, a Samsung S3C6410. It’s a 533Mhz ARM11 CPU. To the right of the chip, are two Hynix RAM chips. This new Chumby can be built with 2-8GB of storage. Below that is the Novatek NT39703 display driver. The crypto processor is left of there. The headphone jack is located in the lower right corner of the board. The board’s lower edge features three USB ports. A USB WiFi card is plugged into one of them. We assume not integrating WiFi means they don’t have to deal with FCC approval; they just use an approved card. The USB and memory cards are controlled by the Alcor Micro AU6350 located next to the camera module.

There was no must-buy Christmas electronic gift this year. No new iPhone refresh, no tickle-me-elmo – nothing! There is a gadget out there that has been flying under the radar, and it is probably one of the coolest open-source pieces of hardware to hit the market (or at least to hit your bedroom dresser) in a long time. The Chumby is a touchscreen in a plush housing, with a built in accelerometer, some speakers and a wifi card. Running on an open-source platform, it is essentially iGoogle on your alarm clock. Like waking up to your favorite Pandora station? Like waking up and seeing updates on your Flickr account, local weather, sports scores, RSS feed updates, Facebook wall? Its all right there. Widgets have finally made their push into the bedroom. At $200 each, the Chumby isn’t the cheapest alarm clock on the market, but it’s certainly the coolest.
