As reported in National and local media outlets, over €3 million of Cigarettes were seized by the Revenue’s Customs Service in Monaghan. Revenue sources say that they believe the 9 million cigarettes originated in Malaysia however the Blarney Times believes that this may be the start of the latest miscarriage of justice. Our inside source on the inside, Mr John Player, says that the 9 million cigarettes were hand rolled locally in an attempt to generate badly needed jobs.

A local councillor said, “This is obviously another cynical government ploy to keep Monaghan down. First they close our hospital, our army barracks and now they claim that a local artisan cigarette producer is actually importing them illegally. Incredible. Have they no shame?”

We have contacted high profile TD Martin Ferris Sinn Fein for advice. Martin has a lot of importing experience from his activities in the 1980′s. In the meantime the Blarney Times will keep flying the flag for Monaghan Entrepreneurs.

HM Revenue & Customs

12 million cigarettes seized on Tyneside

More than twelve million counterfeit cigarettes have been seized by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) from an industrial recycling unit in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

HMRC officers discovered the illegal haul, which is estimated to be worth around £2.2million in unpaid excise duty and VAT, on Wednesday afternoon (20 July) during checks on industrial sites and storage facilities across the region.
HMRC’s Head of Detection for the North East, Michael Connolly said:
“This was a staggering amount of cigarettes to uncover in one place and shows the scale of this type of crime. Each year the British economy loses over two billion pounds in duty from the sale of illicit tobacco, money that is ploughed straight back into funding other criminal activity in our neighbourhoods.
“We are determined to target the criminal supply chains that flood local communities with these smuggled products. If you know of someone storing or selling illegal tobacco goods in your area you can call the HMRC hotline on 0800 595000 to report it.”
Investigations into the seized cigarettes are continuing.
