These cigars are awesome!

It’s very difficult to identify any flavors in this cigar, but it’s a medium-bodied cigar that is VERY complex. One of the most complex cigars you will ever smoke. The aroma coming off this cigar is wonderful, too; very creamy and nutty. I didn’t know if I should smoke it or eat it!

They are pricey, but if you ever want to splurge, you must try one.

Price: $37.00

As I was packing cigars to take to Reno, I decided to do some housekeeping in the humidor and consol

As I was packing cigars to take to Reno, I decided to do some housekeeping in the humidor and consolidate some boxes. Imagine my dismay when I realized that I was dangerously close to dropping below 100 cigars in the house! I will admit that for an occasional cigar smoker like myself (fewer than one a day, and often just a couple a week) having 500 or 600 cigars in the house is maybe a bit excessive, but 100? Let’s think about this…potentially that’s only 4 boxes, in the days when there were 25 in a box – Tangent: A box of cigars should contain 25 cigars! The current trend of 20 cigars in a box is ridiculous…think about it. If you have a box of 25 and you smoke 5, you still have 20 left…the box of 20 cigars after smoking 5 you only have 15! I’d much rather have 20 than 15, wouldn’t you? –

Where was I…Oh yeah…so I’ve gone through the humidor and I have very few of the kind of cigars you can just grab to smoke without thinking, without worrying about where it came from and whether you have to review it. I’ve found that I have a good many nice cigars, some CAO singles from the IPCPR show in Vegas last year, a handful of Opus X, Ashton VSG, other high end Fuentes and a pretty good handful of Havanas. So I mentioned this dilemma to my wife, and do you think she was sympathetic? No! She wanted to know how long it would take me to smoke what I had on hand…I tried to explain that there were just some cigars that if I smoked I would probably never have in my possession again, either they just weren’t available, or were more than I general spend on cigars myself. Realistically, I suppose I do have a years worth of cigars on hand, BUT THAT’S NOT THE POINT!

Lately I’ve been making a mental list of cigars that I would like to stock my humidor with in the near future, you know, the kind of stuff you can just grab one on the way out the door, but something that you wouldn’t be embarrassed to share with a friend. First on my list is one of my “goto” cigars: Maria Mancini…I like the Corona Classico, Palma Delgado, DeGaulle, and the Magic Mountain. I’m down to a precious few of these and I’ve been stocking some in my humidors for 10 years or so. Next on the list is La Vieja Habano from Drew Estate. These are mixed filler and come in various sizes and wrappers. I’ve only had the corojo wrappers, but have enjoyed them. A bundle cigar I’d buy are the National Brand from Camacho. Once you get past the sweetened cap, these are as well constructed and flavorful as just about any premium cigar. I’m partial to the maduro robustos, but the natural corona is nice as well. I think I’d get a box of Santa Damiana No. 300 to have a nice mild but flavorful cigar on hand and Don Tomas Classicos are also on the list. Neither are in the same value category as the previous three brands, but not ridiculously priced either. I’d probably round out the assortment with a couple bundles of Jose Piedras in a couple sizes, just because it’s really nice to be able to grab a $2 Cuban cigar that tastes great. Mind you, the humidor restocking project is still in the dream stage until well after the holidays. I realize to some the pictures here seem to indicate that I have plenty of cigars, but don’t be fooled! Lake Meade may still have a lot of water in it even though it’s 10 feet down, but there are fish flopping around on the beach man! It’s just not acceptable to be under 200….or 300…sheesh…

Until the next time,

Craig

(note: in some circles this sort of story would costitute a mooch…not the case! Just going for some laughs! My wife laughed at me…)

BECAUSE the Young Gentleman recognizes that excellence and enjoyment come hand in hand and that moreover bespoke means handcrafted perfection intended for both form and function. A bespoke life is made for pleasure and the “very best” rarely come in the veneer of big brands.

The Young Gentleman will smoke a cigar for the sheer pleasure of life; it is twenty to forty minutes of bliss where the gentleman can forget about the day’s tribulations. A great cigar is a seamless balance between power and grace; it is fragrant and perfectly constructed so that the gentlemen need not strain himself on the draw.

The Place

La Gloria Cubana is such a cigar. It is handcrafted at Miami’s El Credito factory in the heart of Little Havana. Its creator Ernesto Carillo, to ensure absolute perfection in every smoke, meticulously examines each cigar. Seasoned rollers, hailing from some of Cuba’s most infamous factories, meticulously roll each stogie. La Gloria comes in various shapes, from a hedonistic Churchill to small petit-robustos perfect for a fifteen-minute coffee break.

The Series R is handcrafted for the aficionado and gentleman who enjoys a full-bodied and flavorful smoke. The Dominican fillers are fermented and aged for much longer than La Gloria’s ‘regular’ range, to produce aromas of pumpkin spice and espresso with every puff and delivered with a complexity that is hard to find in even the best Cubans.

I have been a smoker all my life; that is from the age of twelve. I filched cigarettes (Pall Mall unfiltered and Camel “straights”) from my parents. As time went on, I experimented with other brands of cigarettes and other tobacco products. It is no exaggeration to say I smoked a number of brands that, frankly, don’t exist in the marketplace anymore. That may be the result of the efforts of all you nonsmokers and anti-smoking types, I don’t know. Anyway, back to what I was saying. I tried smoking a pipe my sophomore year in high school and again in college (thought it would make me appear more erudite; didn’t know what erudite was, but I knew I wanted to appear so), but I was neither old enough nor experienced enough in life to appreciate them. Now, as I enter what could be (or once was) called my “Golden Years”, I have rediscovered the pleasures of cigar smoking. I’ve also begun re-examining (something that seems a natural part of the aging process) some of the reasons I began smoking in the first place.

One of the primary reasons I began smoking (and I believe this is true of nearly everyone who smokes) was to appear older, more “grown up” but as time went on, I became aware of a certain cache being associated with smoking. Smoking gave you the appearance of being an “outlaw”, one of the “bad boys”. Back in the day, bad boys didn’t carry automatic weapons, they were the outsiders, the ones who didn’t “play by the rules”. There was, I must admit, a certain attraction to that image; no doubt fueled by screen images of Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, James Dean and the like. That is not to say these screen idols initiated my smoking; I would have smoked regardless. Besides, when I started smoking, I had no idea who these people were. What I came to know was we shared something; a look, a mannerism, a way of carrying yourself. We all belonged to the same club and we all smoked.

Cigar smoking carries with it a similar image. Men who smoke cigars are affluent, influential, leisured; in a word, successful. I”m sure some of you nonsmokers and anti-smoking types out there would add, stinky, fat, lazy and ignorant. That’s okay. I don’t expect to find you knocking at my door or stopping by my tobacconist’s shop. Yeah, I have a tobacconist. It’s one of the benefits of being a cigar smoker. You can’t just walk into your local 7-11 and pick up a Perdomo Fresco. They are sold almost exclusively in specialty tobacco shops, and they aren’t sold in 5-packs; you buy them individually, or by the box. Buying a good cigar is not a spur-of-moment thing. It does require a bit of thought, perhaps a little experimentation. It’s something like buying a new sportsjacket or a good pair of shoes; it has to fit, not only you but your personality and personal style, as well.

The truth of the matter is when you decide to smoke — whether cigarettes, cigars or a pipe — you “buy in” to the fantasy associated with the activity. Cigarettes smokers are “bad boys.” Pipe smokers are seen as intellectual, erudite, somewhat standoff-ish. Cigar smokers are leisured, successful, influential. The air of exclusivity associated (to a greater or lesser degree) with each of these groups is part (I’d say a large part) of what draws people to them. I’m not saying any one of these activities is better, safer or healthier than another. That’s not the point. What I am saying, pleading for, actually, is allow me to indulge my fantasy (whether its fantasy or not) without recrimination or condemnation. There’s already enough of that to go around.

*This is a personal opinion blog. I don’t receive any recompense for what is written, it is not sponsored by anyone*

Hey all I am going to open this week with a cigar that is new to my shop. The New San Cristobal Seleccion Del Sol from Ashton Cigars. I hope some of you already know the San Cristobal name, well this is the same bled with just one slight tweak. The Del Sol features a Nicaraguan sun grown wrapper. This adds a slightly sweet flavor to the smoke as well as brings down some of the body of the original, but doesn’t lose any of the richness of the taste. I hope that you all enjoy this cigar the only place I know of that cares it is Stag Tobacconist in Scottsdale AZ. That is my home shop.
Well till Next week, happy smoking one and all,

sundays are supposed to be the silver lining.
set aside to eat gouda or walk to the sea or eat large plates full of brunch or to just sleep in past noon.
but sometimes they aren’t that. they are treated like any other member of the weekly family and squandered on routine.

so it seemed like a pretty swell idea to make sure it wouldn’t be that.
i e-mailed mel on saturday night about the idea of a grand list of ten things that are rad indulgences, and how about stuffing them into one day. a sunday.

she climbed on the bandwagon post haste.
and this was our sunday.

our top ten sunday.

1. smoke cigars from amsterdam.

2. eat chocolate chip pancakes.
one pancake didn’t get a smile because we didn’t have enough chips. ghetto.

3. have afternoon coffee with baileys and timtams.

4. make paper snowflakes.
emily says from the outside it looks like pre-schoolers live here.

5. write a typewritten letter to someone we love.

6. take a nap.
ok, so it was 10 minutes long, but still. mel took the top bunk, i the bottom. and we napped.

7. go take snapshots outside.

we wandered over to the cutest christmas tree lot on arbutus street. it had christmas lights strewn up and fresh cut evergreens waiting to wear tinsel and flannel-clad customers…we stuck our noses into the needles and it smelt like happiness.

8. go for a walk.
we followed the railway line that has been overgrown for what seems like decades. melissa almost stepped in poop.

10. enjoy multiple playings of the days theme song, “alright” by supergrass.

“we wake up, we go out, smoke a fag,
put it out, see our friends,
see the sights, feel alright…”

then, check everything off.

Madrid. Sunrise over the city. At any watering hole you will be able to observe the elder members of society sipping their cafe carajillo (strong black coffee with brandy), smoking, gazing at the television, making sexist jokes and holding forth on the day´s news. By lunchtime they will have moved en masse to the public squares and parks, weather permitting, where you will find them lined up on the benches smoking and passing comment on passing women. By mid afternoon they move back to the watering holes and can be found playing dominoes, pressing coins into the greedy-mouthed One Arm Bandits, smoking… well, you get the general idea. You can also find these elder statesmen at any construction site (not that there are many of those left these days), leaning in small groups with their noses pressed up against the railings watching the diggers, cranes and other heavy machinery with an almost child-like fascination. If you are vigilant, you can also come across them at any spontaneous parking event- again watching with interest, offering their advice, and sometimes even participating with excitable hand gestures and a general sense of entitlement. What would Madrid be without its army of Little Old Men? Well, quieter, less macho, less smoky, but also less amusing. I´m not afraid to admit it- they are one of my favourite urban animals and I hope they aren´t about to be made extinct.

In the past week I have been up and hobbling with the aid of my trusty stick, noting reactions to me (and it) in the streets. The most vocal passers-by have been little old men, as always gleefully outspoken and endlessly entertaining. My favourite comments came this weekend. As I made my way down from Tirso de Molina to Lavapies village I crossed one on the street, also walking with a stick, who called after me,

´My dear, you´re far too young to have one of those!´

and on Sunday I passed another one with two sticks, who looked me up and down and exclaimed as we crossed paths,

´Ah, you´re just jealous!´

There is nothing more refreshing than someone who will quite happily strike up a conversation or make a comment to a passing stranger without shrivelling with embarrassment at the possible reaction. That generally means someone not British. I love the fact that here you are never alone – even when some of the time you would prefer to be. Strangers turn to you in bank queues, bus stop queues, packed metro trains, and shop queues and say what they think. And nine times out of ten that someone will be one of these little old guys. So cheerfully un-self-conscious it is delightful. Nine times out of ten. The other time they are likely to make a comment, under their breath as they pass, like

´Nice tits.´ This, evidently, is not so delightful. This is the downside of rampant freedom of speech and respect for the elderly. I am perfectly prepared to accept a gentlemanly compliment (a ‘piropo’) which is traditional here, and meant as precisely that: a compliment. Many times I have been called ‘guapa!’ (‘pretty’) by an old gentleman with a beaming smile as I walk pass.

A half-Spanish friend of mine suggested a reaction she claims always works. An attractive woman who also happens to be stacked, she is constantly the butt of comments like this as she walks the streets minding her own business. And eventually she snapped. Once, she said she was squeezing her way off a crowded bus as one of these old men was climbing the steps, and he carried out what he thought was a fail-safe manoeuvre: rubbing up against her as she passed, and mumbling some deranged comment under his breath about her breasts as he did so, quietly enough so that no-one else would hear him. You see, the one out of ten has probably made a life´s work out of this, getting away with it all the time, counting on the shame and embarrassment, added to the respect for one’s elders, of the Good Catholic Girl. Not in this case. My friend exclaimed loudly so that the entire bus could hear her, something along the lines of

´How dare you! That’s disgusting! How dare you try and touch me up and say something so gross to me. You’re a disgrace-’ just as the doors slid closed and he entered the full bus, red-faced and publicly humiliated.

Inspired by her example, I found myself reacting similarly when a few days after she told me this a little old man walked past me in the street and muttered under his breath another tedious remark about my tits. Instead of hanging my head and scuttling away I stopped in my tracks, and shouted after him,

´How dare you! You´re a dirty old man is what you are. Would you like it if someone spoke like that to your wife- or your daughter? You should be ashamed of yourself….’ Result. Madrid streets are always packed, even at 3.a.m, and this was mid afternoon. Shoppers stopped to look, traffic slowed, people turned their heads to see what all the fuss was about, peering to get a look at him as he hurried away while I played the Catholic Shame card with gusto.

Thankfully, for every derogatory comment there are nine encouraging or friendly ones. Like the time, years ago when wandering the Rastro flea-market I caught a gypsy girl with her hand clearly in my coat pocket. I was quick enough to grab her wrist and pull her round to face me so I could giver her a mouthful. About the only thing you can do under the circumstances- I was certainly not about to smile sheepishly and let her walk away after being caught in the act. Who were my most vocal supporters? Gathering round, rolling up their sleeves and air-boxing? Yes, you guessed it again- the Little Old Men. ´Yeah- you go for it, girl! You tell her! Don´t let her get away with it, the thieving cow, good for you!´Another positive side to the outspoken society is that it is also a ‘Have a go’ society, unlike ours, where you could possibly be raped and murdered in broad daylight with no-one raising an eyebrow. Here, even elderly people will wade in and help you out if there is a public scene of any kind and they can see you are in distress.

So let’s hear it for Little Old Men. May they live long and prosper! As long as they stick to genuine compliments or comments about politics, weather, sport, and any other topic of general interest which isn’t my breasts. This is going to sound very chauvinistic, but I would far rather deal with a Little Old Man than his terrifying counterpart- the Evil Old Woman. Why? Watch this space and I’ll tell you.

While I’m normally a scotch drinker, I began drinking bourbon some seven or eight years ago as my sister is a Maker’s Mark girl. She likes it neat

When I discovered cigars, I found some paired really well with bourbon and not so well with the particular scotches I could afford so when I told my girlfriend I’d smoked the La Riqueza by Tatuaje and that Thomas at Grants had suggested enjoying bourbon with it, I guess she got a hint

The bourbon is very smooth and contains that little hint of sweetness on the back of the palate while displaying fruit and floral notes in the front of the mouth. It has the characteristic smoothness one would enjoy from a good bourbon all while being light bodied. I’m thinking it’ll pair well with my la riqueze or the Torano signature I just had and will leave notes for that when I can.

This is definitely a sipper to be enjoyed over time.

From the website:

In 1884, Paul Jones Jr., moved his thriving business to Louisville, Kentucky, where he opened an office in a section of historic Main Street called, “Whiskey Row.” Four years later, he trademarked the name Four Roses, claiming production and sales back to the 1860s. In 1922, the Paul Jones Company purchased the Frankfort Distilling Company, one of only six distilleries granted permission to operate through prohibition to produce Bourbon for medicinal purposes. Owing to Paul’s passionate direction and astute business sense, sales of the Bourbon flourished and Four Roses grew to be a preeminent brand.

In 1943, Seagram purchased the Frankfort Distilling Co. primarily to acquire the most noted and recognized name in the business at that time – Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Even though Four Roses was the top selling Bourbon in the U.S. in the 30s, 40s and 50s, Seagram made the decision to discontinue the sale of Kentucky Straight Bourbon here, and Four Roses was moved to the rapidly growing European and Asian markets where it quickly became the top selling Bourbon.

~~

The website describes the bourbon as mellow and I’d definitely agree. I had my flask filled with Wild Turkey earlier this week and that has more aggressiveness to it, possibly due to the slightly higher alcohol content. Also, Four Roses is not as aggressive and lacks the oaky characteristics that Makers has, but agan, all bourbons are different. Four Roses uses new white oak barrels to distill with so you’re not going to get a lot of oakyness in this bourbon IMHO.

But this is definitely an upgrade if you’re used to drinking Jim Beam or Jim Beam Black.

They are the ingredients to some overdue quality time off. Despite what others may tell you work can be stressful; and sometimes just downright overtaxing. This added to the difficulty of being away from my family during the holidays, I must admit that I have been at my wits end.

The past couple of days, and especially this evening, have been the longed for time I really needed to myself. I’ve had the opportunity to dedicate much needed time to prayer and study, enjoying the small mercies in life, and even had ample time to speak to my wife and daughter over the phone. Truly this has been a time of rest.

It is moments like these when I pause and reflect upon the grace and mercy of the Lord. This Thanksgiving I had much to be thankful for. My wife and my daughter, my job, my victory in the semi-annual PFA, the time of calm and restful relaxation, and -above all- the love of God which has drawn me to Himself.

Tomorrow my week begins all over again, but -thanks be to God- I am ready and well rested for the race that is ahead.

How were your holidays, and what are you thankful for?

Blessings!

Never ones to shy away from their freedom in Christ, reformers love their cigars. They also enjoy pipes, clove cigarettes, and cigarillos. In fact, most forms of tobacco are acceptable with the exception of cigarettes, of which there is a divide among old and young reformers. The old reformers who used to smoke cigarettes are now telling the young reformers they shouldn’t – but mostly for health reasons.

As a general rule, cigar smoking is relegated to testosterone laced “guys nights” and to times when the kids are sleeping and there is some serious theology to be read. As accompaniment, whiskey is preferred, beer is acceptable (only if it’s microbrewed, see #2), and coffee is a fallback for when you’ve had too much whiskey or beer.

Thanks to an old pipe and cigar smoking buddy of mine, Lyle Wallace, of whom I’ve shared many a smoke, for insight in the crafting of this installment.

Sunday started with coffee at Mel’s Diner at the Sands with Mark, Anita, Jim and Randall. We were expecting the rest of the gang to show up, but we only saw Gary and his family on our way out. We got packed up and Mark, Anita and I said our good byes as they headed back to California, and I went back to park myself at the CalNeva sports book for another day of hanging out with friends and smoking cigars. Notable smoked included Liga Privada T52, Saint Luis Rey Serie A and Camacho Candela.

The crowd was a little smaller today and I was able to hang out with some different folks: Bob C, Richard, Steve, Keith and Mike G, Mike H, amongst others. Some folks had bets on the football games, Steve S had to leave earlier than planned, but had to stay for the Patriots/Jets (I think) game as he had placed a multi-game bet and apparently the Patriots gave him some cause for concern (he was sweating…). The Patriots covered the spread and he cashed out and hit the road. Sunday evening those of us who were left all went to the buffet at the Eldorado which was just way too much great food. I had a piece of prime rib just to be able to say I had prime rib three days in a row. Hung out for one last cigar and called it a night.

I’m a pretty nervous traveler, so Monday morning I arranged for a 7 AM shuttle to the airport. I had a 10:00 flight to San Francisco so I got there plenty early. I sailed through security, found my gate and settled in for the wait. Reno Airport offers free wireless internet, so I was able to get some photos from the weekend uploaded to Flickr and catch up on some e-mails. The flights home were uneventful. It was nice to get home after a great weekend. Many thanks to Bob Greene for organizing H.A.R.D. for the 11th year. It was great seeing so many old friends and meeting new ones, many of which I had had e-mail contact with before. It’s always fun sharing cigars with like-minded individuals. Lots of thanks to Jenn for talking me into going and making it possible!

Until the next time,

I mean, really smoke. Without a doubt, the tobacco industry does extremely well here in Baghdad.

At my unit (and others here), cigars have become the weapon of choice against clean air.

We have a spacious smoking area where people hang out and smoke their cigars. It overlooks the lake, and is quite a nice rest spot given the cool temperatures this time of year.

I don’t know much about cigars, but I know for fact that Cubans are smoked here. You can’t get them legally in the United States, but apparently they are easy to come by in Iraq. I’m told they last a really long time and offer a sensation unlike any other cigar in the world.

To me, it’s all relative. I’m a non-smoker, so I don’t necessarily think about anything other than the icky smoke clouding my lungs. For the cigar aficionados here, they really enjoy taking an hour to enjoy one on the patio.

We al have a lot to be thankful for this year. Yes, no doubt it has been a tough year for many of us

We al have a lot to be thankful for this year. Yes, no doubt it has been a tough year for many of us. I am very thankful for my wonderful family and friends.

I am also very thankful for many of my cigar friends both at my local brick and mortar, Cordova Cigars and on Twitter and Facebook.

One in particular I would like to thank is Jose Blanco. I had the great fortune of corresponding with Don Jose and he is a great gentleman.

As many of you know I have been smoking cigars for 31 years now and while I have smoked some great cigars along the way they were few and far in between. Don Jose patiently worked with me to help develop my palate and completely change my smoking experience. I used to smoke 6 cheap cigars a day. I now smoke 1 or 2 great cigars a day.

The process started with a series of questions. ” How long does it take you to smoke a Robusto?” “What cigars have you tried?” “What do you think of this or that particular cigar?” And then the assignment. “Go get 10 La Aurora 1495 Robustos, 2 in each wrapper. They come in Connecticut, Ecuador, Cameroon, Brazil and Crojo.” This was easier said then done but after some searching I found an online sample pack that fit the bill.

I was told to 1 each morning, and 1 in the afternoon, in the order listed above and take notes so he could gauge my palate. I guess what he wanted to see if my palate was “color blind”. I was then to send him my notes so we could see where I was at. He also had some other brands for me to try.

Here are my notes for this tasting:

The Construction on all the cigars was perfect. and the taste much more complex than what I was smoking.

Day 1 Connecticut: smell at foot was sweet like swiss chocolate
Tangy Flavor with cookie dough notes
Subtle spices and mild pepper when exhaling through nose. Undertones were sweet.

Stopped at 1 1/2 inch left.

Day 2 Cameroon: Smell at foot was musky manure
Taste Sweeter less tangy than Connecticut. Wrapper oilier. Less pepper on nose.
Finish more pleasant than Connecticut.

Day 3 Ecuador: Sweet Manure Scent
Taste No tangy-nes Just mellow cinnamon taste. Bread taste.
Very good mix (for me) of wrapper leaf and blend. Very easy to smoke
Wrapper not as pretty as Connecticut but cigar tasted better to me.

Day 4 Brazil:Pre-light scent at foot Dates & raisins
Taste both Sweet and Salty at same time.
Stronger more Raw tasting than other 3.
Raw Rough Finish

Day 5 Corojo: scent meaty manure, smell sweeter at foot
Taste had sweetness on lips even before lit.
Taste hard to describe but it tasted like Indian incense smells. or sweet perfume on a woman’s neck. (see I still remember some things)
Around mid-point got a little strong for 1st cigar of the day. Had metal under tone and gave me the hiccups.
Beautiful room aroma.

Bottom line Don Jose told me that there was nothing wrong with my palate and that I should be patient that it takes time to develop.

His willingness to work with a total stranger was very humbling. His impact on my life is great. If your ever within driving distance of one of his seminars I would highly recommend that you attend.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
