O Ministério Público do MS é inoperante.

So, is PR in its traditional perceived form dead? Not a loaded question in the slightest! Three thin

So, is PR in its traditional perceived form dead? Not a loaded question in the slightest! Three things have got me thinking about this – completing the CIPR Diploma, climbing Snowdon, and starting on the CIM Diploma.

The more reading I did around PR while studying for the Diploma (and the Certificate before it), the more I realised that PR in its strictest perceived form just does not – or should not – exist anymore. PR professionals (and I use that word deliberately) do not just wine and dine journalists or massage egos. Our role is – and should be – so much wider.

The PR profession (again, a deliberate choice of words) has a PR problem. While we may have developed professionally to offer clients so much more than the PR practitioners of the early 1900s with their publicity campaigns – we are not telling people about it. And, when we do, they don’t understand our jargon.

Our trip up Snowdon got us all thinking about what it is we actually do – what benefit do we offer our clients? Our vision, mission and values have been clearly defined for some time (has everyone seen our brand onion?) but how we crystallise that into a service offering that clients actually understand has been a longer process.

We subscribe to the CIPR’s definition of PR – it is about reputation; the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you. We feel this covers the holistic nature of the PR profession – defining your cause and then integrating your communications so that your messages and values are consistent across all media and to all audiences.

This is where the CIM Diploma comes into it. The reading I’ve done over the last two months has highlighted just how much we do that extends outside of the traditional realm of PR.

While we do not profess to be HR people or business management consultants, we do know how to use communications to achieve buy-in from all parties – internal and external – and how to use that for competitive advantage (the holy grail as defined by the CIM).

So, open to debate, “we are business communications problem solvers” – succinct and to the point? Or vague and yet more jargon? Does it actually accurately convey what we do? Or is it just another way of hiding behind words while we try to articulate clearly the value that we add?

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and when in the USA, pig out on turkey and all the trimmings at T

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and when in the USA, pig out on turkey and all the trimmings at Thanksgiving, Whoohoo!
I’m thankful I discovered running, and the friends that come with it, and also thankful that I’ve made it to taper time in fairly good shape.

What have I been up to? Our club, the LMJS, is organizing a training program for the Oakland Marathon and Half. The marathon program started last week, so now there are about 75 people following three training programs drawn up by little old me (with some input from others). Eek! I hope they’re doing OK. The weekly supervised runs will be plenty hilly, since the course has a major hill in it. I’ve run various bits of this course at different times. The uphill’s not too bad, but that descent down Lincoln is not be trifled with. It’s on concrete too. They don’t put asphalt on gradients that steep. The half-marathoners are starting their training soon, and I’m still working on those plans…

Today I’m taking a day off as part of my taper. CIM is the weekend after next, and I’m still thinking about a pacing plans For the first time I’m planning a negative split instead of doing it by muddle. I’m tinkering with a spreadsheet to get the splits out. I’m not sure if I’ll use a pace band, or try and memorize it all. The memorization trick would involve a set off offsets from 7:30 pace, hitting zero around halfway, then going negative. After mile 18-20 or so, it stops being a pacing plan, and becomes a schedule. “Hitting mile 20 in X equates to a finish time of Y” type of thing. Nice to know if you’re pushing to hit a particular goal.

Speaking of pace bands, I volunteered at the LMJS 4th Sunday Runs last weekend, and at the start Loraine showed me a small post-it note with three mile splits on it. Yup, a 5K “pace band”. It worked, and she got another PR, on her own this time. Good job, Loraine! Her husband, Dan, has been coming back from a knee injury that the docs seemed to think is degenerative, but maybe isn’t. He’s been running in a pair of Vibram Five Finger shoes, with good results. It looks like there’s something to this barefoot/minimal-shoe trend.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

When the crowd finally filtered into the dining chamber, I snuck back in, hoping the noise would have moderated. For my luck I found myself at a table with three third- and forth-year mining students, all women in mining. Over a terrible dinner of untouched lettuce leaves served the same huge size they were picked with some stringent vinegar thrown over for bad measure, and a dense breast of chicken over-cooked and subsequently kept heated for crowd-control, we chatted amiably about student life, working in Fort McMurray, choosing jobs by the random pick method, and the peculiarities of some of the university professors. As one student told me: I know about heap leaching now after two lectures–you pile the stuff up and sprinkle water and chemicals on it.

I joke. These three are smart and informed. They could easily take over the mining industry now and soon in the future. I asked them, “Why Mining?” The answers varied, but came down to the common: good scholarships, open places in the department, the opportunity to travel, and sounds interesting. Good enough for me.

After first year university I went to work the holidays in a uranium mine. They put me as a helper to the best driller. He made sure I pulled the fan up to the face where he was drilling as I mucked out behind him. I made money enough to return to university, but before I left is was called to the mine manager. He carefully explained that because of the location of the fan, I hade received excessive radiation exposure—about what you would get from six X-Ray. I suppose I survived and I have two daughters so it is OK. But the lesson, is that on the mines and at Teck, we are all our brother keeper when it comes to health and safety.

He warned about coming uniformed conclusions by telling these stories of the Olympics:

Teck produced the metals for the upcoming winter Olympics in Vancouver. When they “unveiled” them to me, they had TV cameras on my face to record my reaction. Now, I have seen many other Olympic medals and many are very beautiful. They opened the box on the new ones and all I could think was “They are bent and distorted. I could think of nothing to say, until in reply to a question I blurted out ‘I am overwhelmed.’” Only later was I shown a film that explains that the medals depict the Orca Whale and the bend represents the waves in which the Orca lives as part of an integrated pod. Now I see the beauty of the medals, for now I comprehend their symbolism. Point is defer judgement until you know more.

Then there was the time I took three Teck directors to the Beijing Olympics. They were all over seventy as were their wives. We asked if we could see something other than the women’s volleyball–did not seem quite appropriate for old men and their wives. Instead at the last moment I was told we were going to watch women’s weight lifting. My hear sank at the thought of 250 pound mustaches. I was however quite wrong, for the winner was a slim Chinese girl who was fast, precise, skilled, and professional. Point is once again we often make incorrect first judgements.

He proceeded to stories of flying to Toronto to persuade the heads of banks to finance Teck to the tune of $9 billion as it took over Fording Coal last year at the depth of the economic crisis. He told of putting his daughters to bed one evening between Christmas and New Year and then sitting alone in his study, wondering. “How are we ever going to get out of this.”

Don is positive on China: he says that ninety-eight percent of the Chinese are free to do what they want to do. Most do not care about the other restrictions. His opinion is probably a reflection of the fact that the Chinese are now major shareholders of Teck and a major purchaser of the coal Teck produces.

Don believes mining will continue to boom because of the inexorable push by the Chinese and Indians for a better life founded on more materials mined by Teck. Maybe we should all pop down and buy a few Teck shares before they go higher. Certainly, my opinion is that as long as Don is in charge this is possible.

I recently heard someone say, “We do a lot of advertising, but we really need to do some marketing.”

Aha! I think it is time for a brief explanation of what marketing is and what it covers.

The official definition from the CIM is, “Marketing is the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably”

This means that marketing includes everything from finding out what your customers want to providing it, telling them about it and making some money.

When you say you want to do some marketing, think about what you really want to achieve.

Do you want to identify your customers’ needs so that you can improve your product and service accordingly?

Do you want to develop a new product or service?

Do you want to communicate with existing customers to increase their loyalty

Do you want to promote your business to potential new customers

To achive these goals you may use a variety of marketing tools, including market research, direct mail, telesales, or even advertising.

Marketing is a much broader discipline than many people imagine. If it involves customers, it is probably marketing.

Introduction PowerShell version 1 provided good integration with WMI using the Get-WmiObject cmdlet,

Introduction

PowerShell version 1 provided good integration with WMI using the Get-WmiObject cmdlet, allowing you to easily retrieve and modify WMI instances, and call WMI methods, but PowerShell v2 has taken it, and many other things, a lot farther. One of those areas is eventing, and not just WMI eventing, but responding to WMI events is what I’d like to discuss in this article. Because WMI contains a large repository of information regarding a system’s hardware and software state, it is useful to understand WMI events, so that you can determine where they can fit into your environment. This topic is mostly geared towards systems administrators or engineers that are looking to do some advanced monitoring of their systems.

To get started with WMI events in PowerShell v2, I’m going to show you an example of how to use WMI events to detect DHCP lease changes. DHCP renewals occur infrequently, relative to the frequency of many other event types, however forcing a DHCP renewal is easy, and therefore makes for a good development example. Also, it seems like every other article out there uses Win32_Process instance creations or deletions for their WMI eventing examples, so I figured I would try something a little bit different. Keep in mind that DHCP lease updates are only one of thousands of potential uses for WMI events; I am simply attempting to convey the concept to you, so that you can figure out other methods of using it for your own needs.

About WMI Event Queries

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with WMI event queries (aka. notification queries), they use a syntax similar to this:

SELECT <Properties> FROM <EventClass> WITHIN <Seconds> WHERE TargetInstance ISA '<WmiClass>' AND <OtherCriteria>

Now, writing an event query is a little bit different from a standard select query. Why, you ask? Well, the system event classes you’ll work with respond to WMI instance events for all of the built-in WMI classes. In other words, they are responsible for a very large number of events. Because of this, you will need to write a query that provides extensive filters in order to avoid some inherent limitations of WMI. The main event classes of which I speak are as follows:

__InstanceCreationEvent – occurs when a WMI instance is created (eg. a Win32_Process being instantiated)

__InstanceDeletionEvent – occurs when a WMI instance is deleted (eg. a Win32_Process terminating)

__InstanceModificationEvent – occurs when a WMI instance is modified (eg. a Win32_Process uses additional memory, or deallocates some)

__InstanceOperationEvent – occurs when a WMI instance is created, deleted, or modified (any of the above)

These are the main WMI event classes you’ll work with, unless you have another specific need, for example: monitoring a 3rd party piece of software, or are looking to monitor installation or deletion of WMI classes (as opposed to instances of classes).

If you would like to test out writing an event query, you can use the Wbemtest utility, that is included with Windows 2000 and up (XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, 7, 2008 R2). Simply type “wbemtest” at the run prompt, or from a command prompt, then use the “Connect” button to connect to the “root\cimv2” namespace, and you should be presented with a window that looks similar to the below screenshot. Make sure that you select the “Asynchronous” method invocation option, as that will enhance wbemtest’s GUI performance during event queries; If you leave it at the default of “Semisynchronous“, you will probably find the GUI frustrating to work with, as it hangs during the polling interval.

WbemTest Utility (connected to root\cimv2)

To test out an event query select the “Notification Query” button, and you’ll be presented with a box to type your query into. For now, just to get you started, an easy query to type here would be:

SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 3 WHERE TargetInstance ISA 'Win32_Process'

Notification Query Window (wbemtest)

Once you’ve written your query, select “Apply,” wait the interval you specified (in the WITHIN clause), and you will start to see WMI event instances start to populate in the “Query Result” window. This window will remain open (and subscribed to events) until you close it. You can double-click on these event instances to open them, and then close the “Query Result” window if you’d like to stop polling for events.

Event Query Results (wbemtest)

Here is what you’ll see when you double-click on one of these events:

WMI Event Instance (wbemtest)

As you can see, the event instance contains a few useful properties:

TIME_CREATED – When the event occurred (we’ll talk about how to interpret this later)

SECURITY_DESCRIPTOR – Not sure what this is used for, but it appears to be NULL typically

PreviousInstance – The WMI instance in its state, prior to the event

TargetInstance – The WMI instance in its state, after the event occurred

By double-clicking on the PreviousInstance and TargetInstance properties (and then clicking the “View Embedded” button), we can view the WMI instance, and its properties, both before the event occurred, and after the event occurred. Because we have access to both of these states in an __InstanceModificationEvent, we can do a comparison to see which properties actually changed, and which ones didn’t. The __InstanceCreationEvent, __InstanceDeletionEvent, and __InstanceOperationEvent classes do not have the PreviousInstance property, because they are only dealing with a WMI instance in a single state, not a before/after state.

Property Editor for TargetInstance (wbemtest)

Object Editor for TargetInstance (wbemtest)

The above screenshot is a representation of the WMI instance after it was modified. Had we gone through and opened the PreviousInstance property, we would have seen a similar screen for it as well. On top of that, you can click the “Show MOF” button, which generates the Managed Object Format (MOF) syntax that represents that object. This is great for development and troubleshooting, because you can copy/paste both the MOF syntax for both PreviousInstance and TargetInstance into a text editor, and compare all of the different property values that changed. In fact, to save even having to do that, you can go all the way back to the __InstanceModificationEvent screen, click “Show MOF” there, and it will include the sub-instances (embedded objects).

__InstanceModificationEvent MOF Syntax (wbemtest)

For now, this concludes the section about WMI event queries, and how to test them using the wbemtest utility. If you have other questions regarding WMI Events, please review the resources available on MSDN.

Building Our DHCP Lease WMI Event Query

In this section, let’s talk a little bit more deeply about the WMI event query we need to create in order to detect DHCP lease changes. Remember, the goal of this article is to show you how to detect and respond to WMI events that indicate a change in the DHCP lease time. At any point, we can invoke a DHCP lease renewal by issuing the command:

ipconfig /renew

or (from PowerShell):

([wmiclass]"Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration").RenewDHCPLeaseAll()

Granted, the PowerShell method is a little longer, but it’s also more understandable, as we’re directly calling the WMI API to initiate the DHCP renewal, rather than going through a software utility. I just wanted to make sure you understood that, without “ipconfig”, there is still an easy way to do this through PowerShell. That’s the beauty of PowerShell … simple access to .NET and WMI objects! Anyway, we’re getting off-topic here.

Now that we know how to initiate a DHCP renewal, we can talk about how to write our event query in such a way that we can pick up on this event. It so happens that there is a WMI class called Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration in the root\cimv2 WMI namespace, which contains information about the network adapters in a computer (not restricted to only physical adapters). This class has some useful properties:

Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration WMI Class (wbemtest)

The “DHCPLeaseObtained” property is pretty self-explanatory, and contains the date & time that the DHCP lease was obtained on a particular network adapter. Now, keep in mind that you will typically see a number of instances of the Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration, but normally only the “real” network interfaces (eg. wired, wireless, or VPN) will actually have a non-null value for “DHCPLeaseObtained“. This will be helpful information for writing our WMI event query.

For our first attempt at writing an event query, we might come up with something as simple as this:

SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 3 WHERE TargetInstance ISA 'Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration'

After all, that query will return any changed instances of network adapter configurations, but what is the problem with that? Well, the problem is that we’ll get back events for a whole lot more than just DHCP lease changes. So then, how do we zero in the information we need? If you check out my (albeit high-level) original definition of a WMI event query, you’ll notice the “AND <OtherCriteria>” part at the end. Thankfully, we can dig deeper into objects’ properties, as part of our query, to determine a restricted set of returned instances. Because we already know that: 1) there is a DHCPLeaseObtained property, and 2) we have access to both a PreviousInstance and TargetInstance, we can construct a query that looks like this:

SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 3 WHERE TargetInstance ISA 'Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration' AND TargetInstance.DHCPLeaseObtained <> PreviousInstance.DHCPLeaseObtained

If you examine the above query, you’ll see that we’re further restricting the query, by only returning instances where the target instance’s DHCPLeaseObtained property does not match the previous instance’s DHCPLeaseObtained property. What this effectively gives us, is only events where the DHCP renewal time has changed, and nothing else! So, for the remainder of this article, the query directly above this paragraph is what we’ll use to detect DHCP lease time changes.

Before we go on, and now that we have identified the query to use, let’s test it out using wbemtest:

1.
This completes the current section, on determining the WMI event query to identify DHCP lease changes. Next, we’ll look at how to use all of this with PowerShell.

PowerShell WMI Event Cmdlets

Now that we’ve talked about WMI event queries, how to test them out by themselves first, and how to build our DHCP lease event query, we are ready to talk about the PowerShell cmdlets that allow us to easily put those queries to good use. The easiest way to get started with PowerShell and events, is to simply issue the command:

help *event*

Help *event* Command

From this command’s output, you’ll see that there are a number of event-related Cmdlets as well as a HelpFile to get us started. We’ll concern ourselves with just a few of these cmdlets however:

Register-WmiEvent – Registers an event subscription and allows you to specify a PowerShell ScriptBlock to respond to the event

Get-EventSubscriber – Retrieves a list of all current event subscriptions (not just WMI ones)

Unregister-Event – Unregisters event subscriber(s) (not just WMI ones)

Remember, for any PowerShell cmdlets, simply type the following to get full documentation on how to use it:

help <cmdletname> -full
help Register-WmiEvent -full

Register-WmiEvent Help

If you type “Register-WmiEvent” without any parameters, you’ll be prompted for a WMI class name. Unfortunately, for our purposes, this can be deceiving, because as we talked about above, we don’t actually want to register for all event instances, only certain ones. Because of this, we’ll need to specify the “-Query” parameter on the “Register-WmiEvent” cmdlet, which lets us set the event / notification query we want to use. Your event query can be stored in a PowerShell string variable also, but for the sake of this article, we’ll just keep it in-line with the cmdlet. Now technically, we could run this cmdlet using only the “-Query” parameter like this:

Register-WmiEvent without an action

Running this command yields a new event subscription, but what happens when an event is actually triggered? You guessed it, nothing by default. Actually, what this does is puts events into an event queue, so they can be retrieved using the Get-Event cmdlet, but for now we want an immediate response to our event. So, let’s un-register the event subscription we created and try again.

Unregistering PowerShell event handlers

If we want something to actually happen in response to these events we are subscribing to, we’ll need to specify an action using the “-Action” parameter on the “Register-WmiEvent” cmdlet. The action parameter allows us to specify a PowerShell script block to respond to events. This could be as simple as a quick “Write-Host” command, or we could call a pre-defined function as our event handler (eg. function “DhcpLeaseChangeHandler“). Let’s stick with a simple “Write-Host” for now though, and then call a DHCP renewal to test it out. I’ll talk about some more advanced options in the next section.

Our completed sample!

So that’s it! If you’ve made it this far, you’ve figured out how to register for WMI events and respond to them using a PowerShell script block! If you’re interested, stick around, and I’ll show you how to do some even cooler stuff in the next section.

Advanced WMI Event Handling

Alright, so you’ve made it far enough to figure out how to register WMI event handlers, but you want a bit more. Maybe you’re asking yourself: “Can I see information about the event from the script, like I did using wbemtest?” If so, then you’ll be glad to hear that the answer is “yes!”

To start off, let’s look at the help for the “-Action” parameter of “Register-WmiEvent“:

-Action <scriptblock>
Specifies commands that handle the events. The commands in the Action parameter run when an event is raised ins
tead of sending the event to the event queue. Enclose the commands in braces ( { } ) to create a script block.

The value of the Action parameter can include the $Event, $EventSubscriber, $Sender, $SourceEventArgs, and $Sou
rceArgs automatic variables, which provide information about the event to the Action script block. For more inf
ormation, see about_Automatic_Variables.

When you specify an action, Register-WmiEvent returns an event job object that represents that action. You can
use the cmdlets that contain the Job noun (the Job cmdlets) to manage the event job.

Required? false
Position? 102
Default value The event is added to the event queue.
Accept pipeline input? false
Accept wildcard characters? false

From this, we see that there are a few built-in variables that enable us to capture event information, with a reference over to the “about_Automatic_Variables” help file. The $Event variable sounds pretty promising, doesn’t it? Let’s take a look at that (in the aforementioned help file):

$Event
Contains a PSEventArgs object that represents the event that is being
processed. This variable is populated only within the Action block of
an event registration command, such as Register-ObjectEvent. The value
of this variable is the same object that the Get-Event cmdlet returns.
Therefore, you can use the properties of the $Event variable, such as
$Event.TimeGenerated , in an Action script block.

That sounds like what we’re after: information about the event that gets created. So let’s replace our “-Action” script block with the following: { $Global:MyEvent = $Event }. This way, when an event gets created, it will assign the event to the global $MyEvent variable, so we can play with it.

Checking out the contents of $Event

As we can see, the $Event variable (which we reassigned to $MyEvent) contains a PSEventArgs object. If we issue a few more commands to the PowerShell console, we can discover the underlying WMI event object, so we can retrieve relevant information from it.

The underlying WMI event object

Finally! We’ve gotten to the bottom of our WMI event object, and can now check out the WMI properties that we wanted to compare, in order to determine the differences between the different instances of Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration. Let’s take a look at the DHCPLeaseObtained property on both our TargetInstance and PreviousInstance. Also, let’s look at the .NET API to take the TIME_CREATED property and convert it to a readable DateTime format; It’s simple, trust me.

The underlying WMI Event Object

There they are … the two CIM_DATETIME values that represent our DHCPLeaseObtained values before and after the event occurred (that we triggered)! The TIME_CREATED property is a 64-bit integer that represents the number of 100 nano-second intervals that have occurred between 12:00:00 AM January 1st, 1601 and the time that the event was generated. Don’t ask.

This example shows that you can dynamically retrieve event information on-the-fly from a PowerShell WMI event subscription. This information could be used in other ways, such as sending an e-mail alert to an administrator, calling an executable, or just about anything else you could think of.

Conclusion

This article stemmed from my interest in learning about event support in PowerShell version 2.0. I hope that by portraying my experiences with PowerShell events, you are able to learn something as well.

This past weekend, a bunch of friends got together for a hilly 15.5 miles on trails at Griffith Park to tackle our 2nd to longest run before the California International Marathon next month. The run itself was beautiful and challenging at the same time. Part of training for CIM requires hill training. I am shooting for a 3:40 again since the course is a net downhill and hopefully doing all these hill runs will make the miles fly (yeah, we’ll see about that). After last week’s brutal 21 hilly miles in Palos Verdes, I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a 15.5 miler on trails. The course kept changing which made it more interesting, not to mention the entire course was so scenic. Sometimes we would be flying downhill or running single-file over loose rocks, trying to stay clear of the snakes! We marked the course with some flour that my friend brought in a big bottle since we all ended up splitting up and we sure didn’t want anyone to get lost in the mountains! In the end when the flour ran out, we had to get creative with rocks and sticks Here’s a photo recap of our run. It’s so much fun to run with crazy runners!

Photo shoot before the trails begin…everyone is looking happy and smiling

We have just returned from two days exhibiting at the Business North West Exhibition in Manchester. It proved to be a very successful trip with lots of people and companies interested in our qualifications and courses. It also proved very useful for meeting organisatiosn who will be able help us further with offering our qualifications to a wider audience.

As a general exhibition there were a range of companies both exhibiting and visiting ranging from website hosting and optimisation, graphic designers and professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). It would have been good to see the Institute of Sales and Marketing (ISMM) there but maybe next year.

The new CIM Diploma in Digital Marketing and Diploma in Managing Digital Media qualifications we a real success with many people interested in enroling on the courses, and with the first lot of workshops already booked it is expected to be a great success. Management also seems to be an area which is in great demand, particulalry in the public sector according to sources so we will be keenly pursuing this opportunity further.

Overall, the exhbition shows that despite economic circumstances there is still a real desire to be trained and gain qualifications in marketing, management and sales which is positive for us, although we must make sure we stay ahead of the game.

We hope to see you at our next event, CIM Live in London being held this Wednesday 4th November at BMA House, Tavistock House, London. For more information click here.

So it’s been a mental few weeks in Maro World. I’m finally feeling that there’s light at the end and the wild roller coaster of my life and thing are getting back on the right tracks.

Work has been particularly manic and now we’ve launched our new website – www.creationagency.com – all is looking snazzy and frexh. Regular updates and more tweets should get us some more client attention in the future and the office is really proud and buzzing with new ideas to blog about.

I’ve been studing hard to complete my Marketing Information and Research module of the CIM course. Some good feedback in my tutorial last night has left me feeling more confident that I’ve really now ‘broken the back’ of my proposal. With only 3 weeks until hand in though I’ve still got a lot of ground to cover.

There’s a fair few sporting events coming up on the calender too, which I’m mega excited about! Saturday we’re off to The Emirates to watch the Arsenal v Tottenham game which should be a great atmostphere! Then Sunday I’m zooming up to Manchester to play for Olney Ladies against Altrincham Kersal should be another great league encounter. So far we’ve been performing really well against some tough sides as we’ve gone up to North 1 in the RFUW leagues. I got my first try on our lovely new Doff’s Field last weekend so I’m hoping for more good play this Sunday – lets just hope my black toe doesn’t cause too much jip! (more to follow on that one)

Being a (College of Industrial Management) CIM student is way different from being just a normal KFUPM student. Taking real world challenge, leading, geting involved in real business activity and innovating in what they do is what makes them different. The university is the place we all discover our potential, talents and skills. No one has been born with a set of skills that makes him a super hero, instead everyone shall strike to obtain and gain the skills that put him apart from ordinary grads. Of course it can’t be done over night. We all have to work hard to prepare for the future.

The club offers many opportunities that can’t be found in many other clubs.

You are expected to be involved in the following:

- Empowering leadership skills and putting them in action in real world situations.

- Holding responsibility and taking care of something worthwhile.

- Teamwork and working within groups, and making efficient groups to gain most of it.

- Expanding and improving your productivity in work and life.

- Many other that you shall discover yourself.

- YOU WILL BE CERTIFIED BY THE STUDENT AFFAIRS FOR THE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES YOU ATTEND AND WORK ON.

Okay, so some of you may be versed in the world of the modern opera scene. Some of you may not know

Okay, so some of you may be versed in the world of the modern opera scene. Some of you may not know there IS a modern opera scene. If the word “opera” brings to mind 1-877-CASH-NOW commercials, well then…I’m here to educate you.

I’m Laura. I’m 26, I live (at this very second, at least) in Essex Junction, Vermont with my mother and her clinically insane boyfriend. I’ve been here a little over a month, which has been about 29 days of panicking about the fact that I live in Essex Junction with my mother and her clinically insane boyfriend, a fact which has both motivated me to change my location while simultaneously depressing me into an unshowered pile of quilts for three days.

Currently (at this very second, at least), I work for a bookstore which shall remain nameless (to protect my meaningless yet strangely necessary job, you see). Oh, nameless bookstore! You could be a blog unto yourself (and probably are, for many a quirky, retail-frustrated cafe server or customer service slave). I’ve worked for five stores over six years – quite the track record, I know – as I’ve dragged myself around the country in search of “higher education.” I’ve been a head cashier, an assistant cafe manager, music department manager, you name it, I’ve been forced to do it. I’ve argued with customers seemingly-endlessly about whether or not our cafe is, in fact, an actual Starbucks (answer: it is NOT. Read: NOT), I’ve been scoffed at for not being able to find a specific books with the following criteria: “it was blue, it was on that table about a year and a half ago, it had the word ‘of’ in the title and was about a girl” and/or recreating Dan Brown literature without actually having it being a Dan Brown book (I’m sorry, if you read the DaVinci Code, it’s over. When you get to the end of the book, then the book…is over.).

I have – count ‘em – two degrees in Opera. One from Penn State…WE ARE! Right. I would highly recommend the School of Music at Penn State to any 18-year-old with too many interests to narrow down to one, specifically if music is in the lead. I walked away from there with a Bachelor of Musical Arts (a made-up degree!) in Voice and Contemporary American Literature…so…a made-up degree in made-up subjects. Go me! Because there is no entry-level internship in being a pop star, I of course had to put myself farther in dept upon graduation, telling myself that it was because I needed more education in making loud noises. So it was off to the Cleveland Institute of Music to get my Master of Music. And THAT, my friends, is another post for another day…look for the heading “CIM: Spiraling Vortex of Sin and Lies.”

Upon graduation, there were, of course, just as many job offers flying at my face as there were the first time I graduated, and now we had the added factor of the Spiraling Vortex of Sin and Lies’s patented Self Esteem Obliterator, so my options were to stay in Cleveland and let alcohol and self-deprecation slowly eat away at my internal organs, or set out to new and bigger adventures, preferably ones further away from the Sin and Lies. So where to then? After many grueling hours of soul-searching, I decided on…drumroll…

The Big Apple.

Oooooof course. No one just DECIDES on the Big Apple – not anyone in my position anyway. Not in this economy either.

Unfortunately my lease was up before I could get my ridiculousness together, so I was out on the streets, trying to figure out where to work and live in the most expensive city in the US. So, with 90% of what I own in a storage shed in Cleveland, a pair of shoes and a pillow in my Hyundai Santa Fe (his name is Nathan), I began the 12 hour trek up through the mountains of New York state and over Lake Champlain to crash at my mom’s in the Green Mountain State.

There seems to be no end in sight (and thus no end in site…HA! Just one example of the hilarious you have to look forward to ). Here begins the chronicle of my seemingly-fruitless attempt at getting to the hub of the classical world, New York City.

évad is elég durva lett, szóval brr.

Azért általában megy a tv reggelente. Régebben a hétvégi reggeli program a H2O: Sellőmesék megnézése volt.

Kedvenc: “A hitetlen (The Believer)”

Investing in mortgages might not be as bad as many thought. Chimera Investment Corporation (NYSE: C

Investing in mortgages might not be as bad as many thought. Chimera Investment Corporation (NYSE: CIM) has already raised more capital on more than one occasion since coming public in 2007 when the mortgage arena was in the process of going from weak to bottomless. We were intrigued by its vulture investing intentions as it bought up distressed mortgages, particularly as it was tied to the very successful Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY). Despite the notion that Chimera became a vulture too soon and well before any bottom could be found in sight, Chimera must be doing pretty well again. Ditto on Annaly. This mortgage REIT status requires each to pay out 90% of its income and Chimera just hiked its dividend to $0.12 for the Q3-2009 period. Annaly also just hiked its dividend payout today to $0.69, which might actually be its highest payout ever.

Chimera is an externally managed by Fixed Income Discount Advisory Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY). We do not have the current ownership information as the data is now 3 months and 6 months old, but Annaly was a large stakeholder.

Chimera invests in residential mortgage loans, residential mortgage-backed securities, real estate-related securities and various other asset classes that go well into Alt-A in ratings. It generates income from the spread between yields on its investments and its cost of borrowing and hedging activities. If it is paying out 90% of its income as a dividend and it raised the payout this much, its investing must be paying off now.

Chimera’s closed down 1% at $3.91 today and its 52-week trading range is $1.53 to $8.00. Annaly’s stock closed down 0.2% at $18.70 today, and its 52-week trading range is $9.94 to $18.88.

Be advised that it will be difficult to tell if Chimera will be hiking its payouts or cutting them from quarter to quarter as it is in the volatile sector of mortgage REITs, is only about two years old, and is in a sector were earnings can and have fluctuated wildly. Here is Chimera’s dividend history:

May 28, 2009 $0.08 Dividend

April 2, 2009 $0.06 Dividend

December 26, 2008 $0.04 Dividend

September 16, 2008 $0.16 Dividend

June 10, 2008 $0.16 Dividend

March 27, 2008 $0.26 Dividend

December 27, 2007 $0.025 Dividend

Annaly’s dividend has also been growing but has a history of being volatile. Its past dividends going backwards and starting at June 25, 2009 are $0.60, $0.50, $0.50, $0.55, $0.55, $0.48, $0.34.
