Sunday Recap (OBEY THE SYSTEM)

You MUST obey this system! Once again, my GFS told me to buy 3 points on the Spurs-Sixers game to make it -7.5, and the Spurs won by 8. It’s amazing how many calls I have seen like this.

Unfortunately, the system can’t call them all. I don’t blame it for missing the Timberwolves game as they were 0-12 ATS in their last 12 games, with a differential of -14.7. But lets not dwell on that too much.

I still had a winning record today in NBA. I went 4-1 ATS, 4-1 SU, and 3-2 O/U. Another solid night for professional hoops.

I went 4-3 ATS in the NFL in an up-and-down day. The good news is I went 7-0 straight up on my picks! And as for O/U, I was also 4-3, for a combined 15-6. Some of my teams looked good while other picks were disastrous.

Bret Favre looked like his natural self against a flat Bears team. Favre threw for 392 yards and 3 TDs (surpassing the 500 career TD mark) as Minnesota put up the most offensive yards the Bears have allow since 1982.

The Seahawks also looked strong against their NFC West rival, adding another chapter to their bipolar season. This team is tough to bet on because they’re either winning by 20 or losing by 20, and you never know which way it’s going to be. Apparently, they are mathematically still in contention for a wild card slot, although a lot has to go their way to make it happen. Winning games is definitely a start though.

Falcons lost QB Matt Ryan early in the game, which really hurt them. Once Turner left in the third quarter, any shot at the Falcons covering their spread was lost. These are the games you just gotta take.

Losing Westbrook has been a huge hit to the Eagles, both offensively and defensively. After only allowing 1 team in their first 7 games to score more than 20 points, the Eagles have now let the last 4 teams score at least 20. Losing their running game means more passing and thus less time the offense is on the field. Naturally, that keeps the defense out there longer, making them wear out more easily.

The run proved to be effective against the Browns for Cincinnati. I can’t blame them for abandoning the pass and just grinding out a low scoring game against a terrible offense. One thing to remember whenanalyzing potential plays is newcomers. The addition of Larry Johnson helped keep this a low scoring game, allowing them to pick up first downs run down the clock. I’m not saying I could have seen this coming but it’s something to keep in your mind when assessing similar games in the future.

All of those losses today were due to unforeseen circumstances and not due to a fault in my system. I probably could have been smarter about the Eagles game and just not played it but I stand by the other two picks.

Week 12: NFL

There are quite a few NFL games I like this week. So let’s just get right to them:

CIN vs CLE; CIN -13, u-39.5

Nothing about Cleveland has changed my mind about them. Sure, they put up a bunch of points against Detroit (more than they had scored in the previous 5 games combined), but that was against the Lions. And look at how many points they gave up. Cincinnati needs this game as a pick-me-up after their embarrassing loss to the Raiders last week. I’m seeing 31-6.

TB vs ATL, ATL -12, o-46

I must warn you, I don’t know if I’d play this game. I’m including it since my GFS is calling it but I have a feeling it is skewed toward Atlanta due to earlier season trends when Atlanta was doing well and Tampa wasn’t. Both have flipped a U. Well I don’t know if you could call the Buccaneers a 180 turn because they’ve still only won 1, but the fact that the Falcons have only won 1 in their last 5 gives me cause for concern. I still think Atlanta will pull it off but maybe not by 12. 28-21, at most 31-21.

CAR vs NYJ; NYJ -3.5, 0-41.5

Here we have another example of two team on crossing paths. The Jets started how and have slowly cooled to a simmer, while the Panthers are just revving up now and they seem to have met right at 4-6 records. I think the Jets are the better team, though, and Rex Ryan has had enough of losing to mediocre teams. As long as the Jets can control their turnovers, they’ll win. I may buy 1 point on this game, though, as I could see it being won by a field goal to make it 34-31. Otherwise, I see 28-34.

SEA vs STL, SEA -4, u-42.5

As a dedicated Hawks fan, this makes me nervous. Seattle is just the kind of ball club to lose to the Rams right now. I think the Seahawks are a much better team but they have too many mental problems right now. I want to take this one so bad as Seattle has the potential of a huge slaughtering, but I could see it going the other way as well. The most likely case I see is this game is a mess with tons of turnovers but the Hawks win it 24-17.

WAS vs PHI, PHI -9, o-40.5

Yet another one I’m on the fence with, but in the end I have to go with the stronger team. The Eagles haven’t looked good in 3 weeks now, while the Redskins beat the Broncos by 10 two weeks ago and nearly shut out the Cowboys until a late game drive put Dallas on the board to win the game 7-6. We may not see the full return of the Eagles as Westbrook is still out, but I think Washington’s inability to capitalize on their defensive success last week foreshadows their inability find any success this week. Eagles win 31-17.

Those are all the games I’m going to give you this week. I’ll write up an in-depth report the Monday Night game later. Best of Luck!

Notre Dame: A State of the Union

With today’s 45-38 loss at the hands of Stanford University, the Notre Dame University fighting Irish finished yet another regular season with an unimpressive 6-6 record.

Most everyone in the media wants to talk about the end of Charlie Weis’ short tenure at Notre Dame, but I want to look beyond the unimpressive record of 35-28 since taking the head coaching position in 2005. Weis started brilliantly with a 9-4 record in his first season including a trip to the Fiesta Bowl, a loss at the hands of Ohio State University, and a 10-2 record in 2006 which included a trip to a the Sugar Bowl, another loss this time to LSU. Though the bowl games did not go in the favor of the Fighting Irish, they had made consecutive trips to BCS bowls for the first time since the creation of the Bowl Championship Series. So the question remains, what happened to that success and who is to blame?

I say look no further than Notre Dame University. The University has remained separate from an athletic conference in football and because of this choice of neutrality the Fighting Irish football team has been doomed to mediocrity.

It is safe to say that the memory of the National Championship of 1988 is dead and gone in the minds of 21st century sports enthusiasts. Notre Dame has not been a National title contender since Lou Holtz left in 1996. Despite winning seasons in the tenures of Bob Davies, Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weis, the Fighting Irish have perennially faltered in big time bowl games and have never been in the picture for a BCS Title.

The coaches who followed Holtz all experienced success, but all failed to maintain that success and ultimately all met their fate. Though Weis has not yet been fired, it is speculated that the announcement could come as soon as this next week. I am here as a prophet of the truth, fighting against the mainstream media notions that the downfall of Notre Dame is the fault of Weis, Willingham and Davies.

It is nearly impossible for Notre Dame to be expected to compete for the BCS National Championship, and here’s why.

Notre Dame’s football program does not benefit from playing a highly competitive conference schedule because the program refuses to be a part of any conference. The benefits of this decision can be seen in the fact that the Fighting Irish enjoy national televised broadcasts of every season game thanks to contractual agreements with NBC. This also allows the Notre Dame football program to schedule whatever teams they so well choose to play with the bait of national exposure. The downside, however, is that Notre Dame lacks access to an automatic BCS bid that comes with a conference championship in a major conference such as the SEC or Big 12. The Fighting Irish play what, by many measures, is considered a very weak regular season schedule. This season Notre Dame played only two teams that remain ranked at this point in time, Pittsburgh University and USC. The fact that the Fighting Irish still managed only a 6-6 record shows that something is wrong in South Bend, and it isn’t the coaching.

Recruiting has become increasingly more competitive, and the top prospects want the opportunity to play a competitive schedule for a competitive program which has the chance to play for a National Championship–none of these things can be said about Notre Dame. The program lacks the draw of schools such as Florida, LSU, Alabama, Texas, USC or Ohio State because the Fighting Irish do not compete for a BCS bowl bid on a yearly basis, nothing is promised under the golden dome of Notre Dame. What today’s recruits have realized is that the glory days of the Fighting Irish have passed and not all the glitters is gold. Notre Dame has lost its high-profile dominance and success but still remains a permanent fixture in the media coverage of collegiate football. The past has past for the Fighting Irish, and the future does not hold the promise of success. Tradition only counts for so much, and Notre Dame’s tradition in the 21st century has been that of underachievers and bowl game busts, something no top recruit would willing sign on to be a part of. Even at Cincinnati, Rutgers, North Carolina and Pittsburgh there is the opportunity to play in a BCS Bowl every year. Not being a part of a major conference has hurt Notre Dame and will continue to no matter who is the head coach of the Fighting Irish.

So, before everyone looks to blame Charlie Weis or whoever follows him and inevitably leads the Fighting Irish to a 5-7 record at some point of his tenure, I urge us all to examine Notre Dame from a larger and more forgiving perspective. This is the case of a school that has lost its competitive edge because of its inability to stay competitive in recruiting and in the all important quest for a National Championship. It may be time for those in charge at Notre Dame to take some time and pray for the future of the University’s football program. The current predicament in which the Fighting Irish finds itself will not be resolved with a new coach or over time. It will be fixed when Notre Dame seriously examines its place in the college football hierarchy, or with the help of humanity’s head coach. Keep your faith, Notre Dame, because these days the luck of the Irish is just not enough.

Focus on Fountain Square came in 1999 during the Tyler Davidson Fountain Restoration. A Mural was Donated by Michael Burns & MuralPop.com as an expression of support and awareness to the people of Cincinnati. The Mural acts as a symbol for the start of an artistic movement at fountain in Beautiful Downtown Cincinnati. The Mural showed the people of Cincinnati how powerful art can be for a community. Various Businesses instantly noticed how much attention and awareness this mural brought the designer of the artwork, and they immediatly began supporting with goods and services. Before the Mural there was no City Money in the budget to restore the fountain, 3 Million Dollars was donated and raised as a result of this mural. Since 1871 Cincinnatians have viewed the Tyler Davidson Fountain, in its present location at Fountain Square and in its previous incarnation a block away at Government Square, as a symbol of Cincinnati. The Fountain, also known as the “Genius of Water” has presided over nearly 130 years of Cincinnati gatherings — from wartime victory celebrations and Christmas ice skating to summertime brown bag lunches. When green plywood barricades sprung up around our beloved fountain, the public backlash was palpable.

Enter civic minded artists Michael Burns and Erin Holubeck and photographer Mic Chandler, and a solution was born. Burns and Holubeck approached Willie Carden Jr., Facilities Superintendent Manager, with a proposal for a decorative and informative mural to encircle the fountain until the restoration could be completed. On May 25, City Council voted 6-2 to accept the donation and approve the design.

After extensive research and armed with historical photographs compliments of the Cincinnati Historical Society and excerpts of the dedication speech Henry Probasco delivered at the Fountain’s christening, Burns and Holubeck designed a mural that is both aesthetically pleasing and educational. The mural incorporates fountain and historical images, fountain history and the fountain itself in the design. The design is meant to flow around the fountain, with each mural panel leading to the next. From some viewpoints the mural and the fountain actually seem to interact. The information contained in the design serves as a history lesson about this beloved landmark, from its design inception to the current restoration project. Portals have been incorporated on the north and west walls to allow viewers to see the fountain and watch as the restoration progresses.
