African Independence Wins Best Documentary at San Diego Black Film Festival

The documentary African Independence that I’ve been lucky enough to be the Creative Director, Cinematographer, and Editor for has finally been released. First stop: San Diego Black Film Festival. The festival was great and I enjoyed watching all the different films. At the end of the festival we walked away with Best Documentary Film and Best Director. Day 61: Aquarium of the Pacific

This looks like a great place to visit if you are ever in Long Beach, California. I’d love to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific if we get the opportunity prior to setting off on our Pacific Ocean row from Monterey Bay. But better still, if you happen to be about between the 5th March and May 2013, then you’ll be able to learn all about the beauty of sharks at some special lectures with underwater cinematographer Richard Theiss:

In a series of three lectures, underwater cinematographer Richard Theiss and sculptor Victor Douieb will discuss their personal experiences with sharks, shark conservation, and their work documenting sharks. Sharks: The Beauty of the Ocean Predator, an exhibit of Douieb’s shark sculptures, will be on display at the Aquarium from March 5 through May 5.

Mike and Annie booked us in April because they heard about us through a friend.
The wedding was in Louisville, KY and the reception was a place we had done one
last year. We knew then this was going to be a special day more then usual. When
the day arrived and we started filming in a church that was over a century old,
I almost cried a little seeing the happy couple in that church. It was a moment
for me because of their moment. The reception was a blast. Mike and Annie’s
parents were involved all through the night and the whole evening just lended
itself to great video. Thanks Mike and Annie for trusting us.

Matt and Kayla booked us from a refferal we did for another couple. We were
happy to help and we never met them until the day of. They were so awesome and
the family was very open arms towards us! Matt and Kayla look so great together
and they really know how to throw a party! This is actually may be the wedding
were we filmed the most open dancing ever! It will be a hard edit in terms of
which shots to use from so many great ones, maybe I will use them all. This was
also our first ceremony in St. X Church. Wow! It is simply stunning inside this
gem. Thank you Matt and Kayla for allowing us to capture your day.

Day Two Filming

This morning we went to film again. We had the whole day to do it because most of us only had lessons in the afternoon. We were meant to meet at college at 9:00am although I was about 20 minutes late due to traffic. So the girls went to the filming location and did a couple of shots.

Originally we all took part in the filming, but then Yas, Emily and Sofia decided to only have two people in the film. I agreed with them because there wasn’t really any point in us all being in the movie. Another possitive aspect of this decision would be that there was actually someone to play the cinematographer role.

Yas and Sofia were the two people who were acting, me and Emily were the ones filming. It did work better just having two people in the opening scene because you can focus more on two characters rather than four in a 2 minute movie opening. The stroline was now changed. We would now see Sofia sleeping in the background after Yas’s short vlog at the beginning. We then see Yas coming in a abandoned barn with some wood. She drops the wood on the floor and wakes Sofia up as there is someone else there. They grab their things and run away.

La Salle d'Attente (The Waiting Room) | [Silent Film Cut]

‘La Salle d’Attente’ known as The Waiting Room is a short film about a room that you arrive at after death. Originally the room was meant to have two doors to represent heaven and hell however, we were unable to shoot in our original planned room so we had to work with what we had. My role in the film was that of cinematographer, I tried my best to shoot with the equipment I had, as you can tell some shots are hand handled and a bit static. However, ignore that and enjoy.

A cinematographer or the “Director of Photography” as it is sometimes referred to in the credits, is the person responsible for the overall look of a given shot.
After the director of the film has said what the should should look like, it is the cinematographer’s job to plan on the camera angles,lighting setups, number of cameras used in a given shot, in order to achieve a good-looking shot.
The cinematographer is both artistically and technically competent, and usually works along with the director, lighting crew and even camera operators in order to properly film the given shot.
