If you’re like many people, your monthly cell phone bill has been creeping higher and higher over time. The addition of second and third lines, family plans, text and data messaging has provided big leaps in functionality at the cost of just modest additional fees … but those fees do add up.

Today, just in time for the recession, the average monthly cell phone bill for Americans, at nearly $80, is as high as it’s ever been. So it’s no wonder that new suppliers have been nosing around this market for awhile now, including those offering VoIP phone services over the web at a fraction of the cost.

And now Wal-Mart has gotten into the fray. On course to become the low-price leader in seemingly every imaginable consumer product and service, Wal-Mart has decided to roll out a new wireless cell phone service called Straight Talk.

Instead of the plethora of “complicated, convoluted and confusing” contracts that seem to be so common in the industry, Wal-Mart’s Straight Talk is offering just two plans – and neither of them requires a signed contract.

One plan offers unlimited minutes, texting and mobile web user for $45 per month. A cheaper, $30 monthly plan allows for 1,000 voice minutes, 1,000 text messages and 30 megabytes of web usage. Consumers may refill their monthly balances by buying refill cards at Wal-Mart stores or by registering online.

And what about those irritating “add on” charges that always seem to add $10 or $15 extra to your monthly bill? Wal-Mart’s aiming to limit those as well. For example, 411 directory assistance calls are free.

A pilot program, conducted this summer partnership with TracFone Wireless at 234 stores, was so successful that Wal-Mart has decided to introduce the program nationally in time for the holiday shopping season. In fact, the rollout begins this week at 3,200 Wal-Mart stores across the country. Wal-Mart is promoting the service as one that will save consumers ~$500 a year.

Considering how cost-conscious people are at the present time, the promise of savings like that are enough to encourage even those families saddled with early termination penalty clauses in their service contracts to ditch their current suppliers.

Here’s a prediction: It won’t be long before Verizon and AT&T begin to offer similarly discounted and/or no-contract services to their customers. Now, if only they had done so before … they might actually have higher customer satisfaction scores than their current mediocre (or worse) ratings.

Serioulsy?  – in case you “lose it” as Cingular has done with so many of my attempts to contact them and discuss my really old, now archaic and first cell phone account – I will post this here for you.

Dear Sir or Madame,
 
You seem intent on asking me to pay over a thousand dollars for a cell phone bill that was supposed to have been stopped at $400 around 2004/2005 when I have a cellphone bundled into my home phone and Internet service. If you were to go back to AT&T you will see that for years – literally years, I had an overpayment /credit on my record as an attempt to pay this outstanding bill. They had agreed to close my account and freeze the bill until they contacted me and explained exactly what I was being billed for as their cell phone bills were unintelligible to me. I believe we called it auditing the account and the bill.
 
Obviously the issue was never resolved and Cingular or AT&T never called and resolved my complaint. It seems they wrote me off as debt and sold me.
 
Just this winter I finally used the credit as I closed out my home phone and Internet service with the company. I felt no guilt about this as the money had been sitting there for years and already collection agencies were contacting me.
 
If you care to rescind your new and impressive bill back to the original size from which the collection is derived and at which point AT&T dropped their end of the agreement, I will pay immediately.
 
However, seeing as I have, for years, attempted to pay them directly and they did not accept the payment, I am happy to bear the dark mark on my credit because everyone who asks me about it seems to know someone who has had this type of run in with that company.
 
Do not call my place of employment or any suspected family or friends. You know how to reach me and the terms under which I will concede.

Wow, I so do love my Verizon Wireless service where they are prompt and responsive. You should try that!

Have you been ripped off, scammed, screwed, or mistreated by Bank of America, Chase, or the so called Credit Reporting Agencies such as Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, or AT&T or Cingular or Dell Financial (division or connected to Dell Computers) or Time Share companies.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE:

Is there a true credit reporting place that is consumer friendly, pro-consumer, and not in bed with the companies that rip you off?

Where do you go if you have a credit report or experience to report about a company or agency that has ripped you off?

Do you suspect that there are companies that have employers who get away with taking your money in the name of the company that they work for or control? Do you suspect that companies look the other way and do not mind lowering your good credit and trash you and get away with it in the name of charging you more?

Looks like the nation’s largest carrier spent a staggering $86 million to upgrade its wireless network in Sin City last year, surpassing the estimate of $46 million which was initially forecast.

If you’re in Vegas any time soon and don’t have a good wireless signal, Cingular probably wants to know about it after spending so much in upgrading the level of service there. Just don’t count cards on that new Windows Mobile smartphone, ok?

I get these questions every day. “You get like a new phone every month… blah, blah, blah. What should I get?” Well, believe it or not, the same phone isn’t perfect for everyone. There are things YOU need to analyze:

• PRICE

• FEATURES

Carrier:

In America we have four major carriers. Chances are you have either AT&T, SPRINT, T-MOBILE, or VERIZON. Some phones are only available on certain carriers or exclusive to one carrier. Which means you can’t get an iPhone on T-MOBILE, VERIZON, or SPRINT. Unless you want to pay a cancellation fee, you’ll have to stick with a phone available for your carrier.

Price:

Just because a phone is expensive does not necessarily mean it’s the best. Honestly, my favorite phone only cost me $160 off contract. It is only $20 on contract. Set a budget for yourself! Another thing to note is cost of a monthly plan. As everybody’s needs differ, the cost of plans on vary. My advice is to go to billshrink; they’ll help you pick out a great plan according to your individual needs. If you’re wondering, I’m on T-MOBILE and pay $135 monthly for 2 lines, 1000 minutes, wireless insurance, unlimited messaging, and unlimited data (for both lines).

Features:

This is probably the most important factor. Phones today have so many features. It is all about what you intend to use your phone for. If you only use your phone for calling and the occasional text message, there is no need to buy the hottest phone and spend a small fortune doing so. It’s like buying an oven and only using it to make TV dinners. Makes no sense, right?

Next, you have to make sure the phone’s form factor is right for you. There are three major form factors: flip, bar, slider. Bar phones tend to be the most sturdy, then flips, then sliders. If you’re driving and talking, which I do not condone, sliders and flips are probably your best option. I have a G1, which is a big phone. The size and the qwerty full keyboard is perfect for me because I have big fingers/big hands. Don’t be afraid to go to the store to just try out the phones. The way they look online as opposed to the way they actually look can be quite shocking.

Almost every phone has messaging and a camera on it, so don’t worry about that. Do you intend to use your phone as an mp3 player? Get a music phone. Do you intend to use your phone as your primary camera? Get a phone with a great camera. Do you intend to use your phone for extensive messaging? Get a Blackberry. Do you want a phone that is aesthetically pleasing? Get a cute phone. It’s simple really. Go to the stores and play around! Use my damn guide, yeah?
