October 4th, 2007 – The Toronto nightlife scene glows remarkably brighter now that legendary New York nightclub guru Peter Gatien has unveiled his highly anticipated project, CiRCA nightclub. The club was poppin’ off last week, with Shaun Boothe’s “Hip Hop in 3D” event at Circa nightclub.  The night served not only as a raging party, it also premiered Shaun’s new video “Poor Boy” (a hawt and dirrrty track!)…the track is fantastic, the video really sets it apart from the regular ass-n-titty/money-money videos that saturate the hip hop market.  Part of the deal: 3d glasses handed out at the party – keep them if you were there!  The album artwork on the cd is done in 3D (and you can always use them for the Night of the Living Dead 3D remake, which never comes with the 3D glasses when you rent them, probably cuz people like Bobby steal them.)

They often say there are 3 sides to the story; one side, the other side and the truth. Shaun is an artist whose music speaks to that 3rd angle.  In a rap world of super-gangsters and pimps, preachers and revolutionaries, Shaun’s music is alien.  Discontent with the current state of what he sees as “1 dimensional” rap music, Shaun Boothe always brings the 3rd dimension out. When attacking a concept/subject he shows all the angles.

One of the really cool things Shaun’s done is his autobiography series.  He does a rap song sharing the life of someone famous, from all different angles, of course.  At the party we got to hear/see his rap and video for the lives of Mohammed Ali and Puff Daddy.  Now, these two celebs in particular have so many biographies and the like done about them.  Overdone you might even say.  But here’s where Shaun has done the unimaginable.  I don’t know how he did it, but he’s managed to put a freshness and – you guessed it – a new dimension on their remarkable lives.

If you missed it, I’m sorry.  Truly.

We are back from Cuba, refreshed and ready to go!  Speaking of fresh…come out this Thursday to Circa to celebrate the birthday of DJ Whookid, hosted by MTV’s Tika Simone.  Some of you may be asking yourselves “DJ Whooo???” but just stop yourselves right there.  You’ve definitely heard the man before…he’s 50 Cent’s dj.

Today GM adds another entry to his occasional Circa series, wherein he looks back to a particular snap-shot of Georgetown in an earlier time. Up next: 1980.

On the eve of the 1980 election, all of Washington was on the edge of its seat following the close race between Carter and Reagan. However, at least a few were out in the streets looking for some booze. And not just any booze: Canadian Club Whiskey.

The reason they were out on the streets looking is that Canadian Club hid a case of its liquor somewhere in the District. Where was it?

Start at a place that was named for America’s most important city. See where a bark takes you. From there, go to what you can’t miss. When you have arrived, face in the direction of a past scandal that was uncovered and made public. Turn in the opposite direction and make tracks for a nearby Metro station. Ride three stops.

Come up and then find the way to a famous ending. Continue in the most obvious direction, when you know the time is right. Before it’s too late, head for the nearest bridge that can take you over water. If it becomes impossible to continue in a straight line, go toward a body of water and find a spot with three banks. From the highest bank, go in the direction of a bridge. When you’ve reach it, walk back 100 paces and you’ll be right over the hidden treasure: a whole case of Canadian Club.

It’s all yours if you’re first to find the person in charge and say, “C.C. please” with feeling.

So where was that case of Canadian Club?

Nathans.

How’s that? The first paragraph has you go from the Washington Monument towards the Watergate then to Metro Center where you’d take the Metro to Foggy Bottom.

From there you’d walk to the intersection of M and Wisconsin, walk down to the canal and then back until you’re standing over the cellar door of Nathans. To get the whiskey, you’d have to go into Nathans and ask for C.C.

According to one account, the contest was won by a 20-something from Oakton, VA. When he walked in to Nathans to ask the manager for C.C., it was revealed that about a dozen people had come the night before asking the night manager, who had no knowledge of the contest.

Like the title says, M. Kawabata performs “THE PERFECT DRIFT” IMO of all times @ D1 Grand Prix in Circa on August 2009.

With an outstanding performance and skilled driving being displayed this places M. Kawabata in 1st place @ this event.

For a moment I thought M. Kawabata was going to completely loose control and spin out, but man does he know HOW TO DRIFT SIDEWAYS!!

This is some MAJOR STEERING ANGLE FTMFW!!

The facial expressions and reactions on the D1 judges were PRICELESS!!

Did you guys notice the S15 dash in M. Kawabata’s RPS13?

I thought that was pretty bad ass mod/custom work makes me wonder if I can do that in my 240SX S14…hmm…

It must be nice to be a D1 judge while sitting under a shaded area on a custom Bride seat to watch drifting all day long.

Watching this video sure makes me miss my old 91 Nissan 240SX S13 esp. having those Kouki tail lights…

In historical documents, it is not uncommon to see photos or other references to someone or something given with an approximate date such as circa 1900. (Words most often found near circa are B.C., A.D., photo, and a variety of round dates.) It may also be used occasionally in approximate recollection: “Circa 1975, I read a lot of Shazam! comic books.” But many people circle around this word uncertainly, not sure how it should be used. You may see signs on restaurants or stores declaring them to be “circa 1985″ or “circa 1997.” What’s that about?

Well, it seems they think that circa, in photos of buildings from a certain time, for instance, means not “about” or “around” but rather “established” or “founded.” So we have a bit of a semantic circus, as it were. But if circa – and circus, for that matter – makes you think of circle, then you’re at the origin: a Latin root referring to circles and roundness. Circa is taken directly from the Latin for “around” or “about.” And the two round c’s can only reinforce that effect.

Those two c’s were both pronounced [k] in the original Latin, though in English they have the tongue do a half-circuit in the mouth, from tip through middle (the /r/) to back. Another word that closely resembles circa has a similar pronunciational history, but with the added detail that it came from Greek but was passed through Latin to give us the c rather than k spelling: Circe.

What’s Circe? Rather, who is Circe: a sorceress whose place Odysseus (or Ulysses, in the Roman version) hung around for a while. Her name is from the Greek kirké, “falcon” (but is now said like “Sir See”). When Odysseus’s men arrived, they found what seemed like a circus menagerie of docile animals. In fact, they were previous visitors, drugged and transmogrified. Many of Odysseus’s men were soon thus transmogrified, too, but Odysseus was warned, and when he went to free his men, he was met by Hermes (in his pre-fashion-designer days!), who gave him a herb which would protect him from the spells of Circe so he could bargain with her effectively (which he did; the movie version of that part would be rated R or X). What was the herb? It was the holy herb moly (Greek molu). So by eating holy moly, he was protected from being transformed.

Which reminds me of Shazam! Its protagonist had only to invoke the name of the wizard Shazam to be transformed into Captain Marvel (good newsstand competition for Superman). It happens that characters in the Shazam! comic books liked to exclaim “Holy moly!” I read these comic books circa 1975, as I have said, but I did not learn until circa 15 minutes ago what holy moly originally referred to, before it became an expletive. And so I am come full circa, as it were.

Rock it at Circa this Thursday!

The Smirnoff Experience parties have always been insane, definitely something you don’t want to miss.  When you combine it with the Casby’s after party and Circa’s “house party” theme, it’s kinda a no brainer.  You wanna go, so just go, okay?

The Casby’s are Canada’s awards for independant and alternative music, so expect to see a lot of Canuck musical talent around (think hot artists, and hotter groupies who want to talk with them – there’s only so many of column a, and tons of column b – you do the math…clean up with column b overloads), plus some more special guests we are working on…will leak once it’s confirmed (if you like erotica, you’ll be pretty excited, is all I have to say about that.)

But music and sex aside (though really, that should be enuf for the average bear) you’ll want to come to see the impressive get up Circa will be in.  Seriously, I can’t even think of a word to describe the madness.  They’re going all out to bring you a sensational night.  I don’t want to spoil it, buuuuuuttttt……..think huge installations.  And considering this is Circa, which already has huge installations, I think you can just imagine how intense these will be, if they’re to beat their usual suspects.  There will be a full kitchen in the main room, a large garage on the stage, that opens up to have USS (and Autoerotique and Jainism) perform from the inside… a hot tub with balls. skate boarders doing tricks, rockband…and…

Two lucky ducky U&F’ers (remember that game Lucky Ducky at Canada’s Wonderland? I love organizing!  It makes me feel calm and together.  Some of my amused managers and co-workers have even called me hyper organized!  Because I like very specific items I buy my a lot of my own supplies for work, so some of the items cross over between work and home.  I thought I’d share some of the key tools I use to keep my organized for work.

Electronic

• iPhone – My iPhone is wonderful.  I currently have the white 32GB 3GS.  It’s great.  I have so many apps that make my work life easier, like OmniFocus and SplashID.  It also use my iPhone to listen to podcasts and music to keep me focused while working.  It’s a great little organizational machine for me!
• OmniFocus – This is like my second brain.  I record all of my to do items in here.  If it’s not in OmniFocus, it’s not getting done.  I’m diligent in recording everything that needs to get done in here.   OmniFocus was designed for the Getting Things Done system from David Allen & Co.  While I don’t strictly adhere to the GTD system, I do follow many of the principles.  OmniFocus is flexible enough allow me follow the portions of the system I chose and still achieve my goals.  I’ve been using it on my MacBook since the beta, and on my iPhone since the app was realized.  It’s a dream.
• SplashID – My company has not yet fully embraced the concept of a single sign on.  So I have multiple logins & passwords for work.  Additionally I need to access websites outside the company for various purposes.  SplashID gives me one central location to find all my logon IDs and passwords for each site or application.  My iPhone app syncs to my personal MacBook.

Analog

• Moleskine – I love using a Moleskine to take meeting notes for my short term projects.  They are also great when designing user interfaces.  I tend towards the Large Squared Notebook.  The size is just shy of half letter, which seems to work perfectly for me.  I like squared over ruled or blank.  It helps me keep my notes organized and my sketches aligned.
• Circa – Levenger, thank you for bringing Circa into my life.  I adore these notebooks!  For work I mostly use the Junior and Letter sizes.  I have a customized Junior notebook that I use for normal meetings.  All my current projects have either a Letter or Junior sized notebook assigned to them.  For some of my projects, I’ll even grab one of my leather foldover notebooks or zip folios.  I’ve found these are great for all day off site meetings.  They really keep me organized.
• Post-It Notes – My favorite Post-It notes are the Super Sticky ones.  I normally use the canary yellow ones because I’m a bit of a traditionalist and they stand out just enough for me.  I use them to take down super short term notes (like voicemail messages) or add an extra note to some printed pages (like which slides for a presentation I’m doing)
• Post-It Flags – Post-It flags are awesome!  I don’t know how I got on without them.  I use them in my Moleskine’s and my Circa’s.  I use them when I’m taking notes on something printed, to flag where I have questions or corrections are needed.  There are so many uses for these!  I normally use the small tabs because I don’t write on them.  But I have a large collection of colours for colour coding.

I love these tools that help keep me on time and task.  Each items has made my work life a bit easier and more organized.  I’m always ready to learn about new tools to fit into my system.  If I find any, I’ll be sure to share them.

As if there wasn’t enough already going on on the front of this card, I sent it to Andy in hopes of adding even more clutter, which he did.  1997 Circa sure was crazy…

On the front alone we’ve got his last name, team, name, position, and lots of lighting bolts.  It even has a quote from Braves manager Bobby Cox, who says that Ashby “… was a thrower… Now he is a pitcher – by very means of the word, he is a pitcher.” I’m not sure what that means, to be perfectly honest with you.  Sounds like he wasn’t very good out of college, but was turned in to kind of a good pitcher through coaching.  

I like the elaborate “A”s in his name.
