After Lausanne, it’s now the turn of Geneva to become 365 days long the dream of Circus World in 2010.

We’ll touch classic music with the collaboration of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Ensemble Instrumental Romand and the Music Festival.
We slide into pop music, jazz, techno and rock circus with scenes of the Chat Noir, Ella Fitzgerald and the Lake Parade.

All summer long, between the Bastions Park, the Rousseau Island and squares, we’ll dream during free circus shows.
The entertainments of four continents, such as the clown world, dance, magic, tightrope walkers, comedians, street theatre, art performance, trapeze artists, jugglers and unique discoveries will make children and adults dream.

We’ll vibrate with world previews of the Théâtre de Poche, Théâtre les Montreurs d’images and Théâtre des Marionnettes of Geneva.
We’ll be bewitched at Théâtre Am Stram Gram, the Théâtre de Carouge and the Théâtre du Loup which cavorts in the forest.

The Geneva festivals will be under footlights to give dizziness to each of us, in order to perceive the circus in the magic wealth of these discoveries.

We navigate with the UNO and the Cern, to present the circus with children of the world, and science. 34 countries vibrate with us, in this demonstration of unlimited multicultural frontiers.

We’ll shiver with fireworks, at the Fête de Genève or the musical movement of Nina Rota, Cesare Sterbini and Nicola Frize.

Several exhibitions will present the face of the circus between dreams of Grock Château de Penthes, the Kabuki Theatre of Japan and circus scenes Fundation Baur, with wild street posters, evocating the Circassian contemporary art. Every moment, Palexpo will make us vibrate to enter into these gardens of World Circus.

Circus schools will do pirouettes on a trapeze, constantly delighting the child who becomes a magician of the ball.

Passing by the archeology at the Roman Museum in Nyon will let us discover the archeological authenticity of the beginning of street theatre in antiquity.

The cinema will drive us in the sawdust with La Strada, Clowns, Freaks Cac Voltaire and the unique film “The tears of the clown” of Victor Sjöström, 1924 Bio , as well as cartoons Cinématou.

The horse, this noble fellow, will amuse us by his trot and gallop under the sound of flamenco.

In 2010, 15 Geneva municipalities will vibrate on the circus stage, letting us discover the Circus of insects in Carouge, or Assis par terre the richness of a show in Meyrin, or clownish music in Onex. All hearts of Versoix will beat in measure to delight the circus dreams.

The University Hospital of Geneva will enter thru the door of discoveries, to thrill all patients by a smile. The circus will go towards them. Almost as many ways of expression serving the same art.

All the benefit of our Circassian dream will go to a humanitarian purpose, allowing children and mothers to get drinkable source water

During 365 days, Geneva will be lightened by all fires.

Si le Cirque Plume devait être incarné, alors je décide qu’il serait Kristina Dniprenko, dompteuse de roue allemande dans le dernier spectacle du Cirque Plume, L’Atelier du Peintre. Je m’explique.

Vendredi 6 novembre, espace Chapiteaux du Parc de la Villette.

L’Atelier du Peintre, dernier spectacle imaginé par Bernard Kudlak, fondateur du Cirque Plume, débute dans quelques secondes. J’attends cet instant depuis de longs mois. L’enjeu est de taille. Dans le “générique” du spectacle, une phrase résume mon expectative: “Chaque artiste a créé son personnage et a participé par son talent, son inventivité, ses improvisations, à la création et à la richesse de chaque moment de ce spectacle”. Beau résumé d’une histoire, celle du Cirque d’aujourd’hui.

En 1968, le Cirque est moribond. Il n’a survécu ni à la guerre, ni aux nouvelles règles d’urbanisme qui l’exilent loin du centre ville, en périphérie, ni à l’avènement du siècle de l’image, qui le cantonne à une succession de démonstrations spectaculaires,  toujours plus dangereuses et vaines de sens autre que la performance, avant de l’oublier. C’était alors le temps des numéros d’une vie. C’était le temps des Auguste et des clowns blancs. Le temps des circassiens de père en fils, de mère en fille, propriété exclusive des mystérieux gens du voyage. Et puis, dans les années 70, comme pour tout art qui s’essouffle, une forme nouvelle nait des cendres du modèle moribond ainsi que du vent de révolte du moment. Le Cirque Nouveau. Archaos et le Cirque Invisible font leur apparition. Le cirque devient un métissage invitant artistes de tous bords, il se re-invente, bouscule les codes et se libère des traditions circassiennes. En 1884, à sa création, le Cirque Plume s’inscrit dans ce mouvement.

“Chaque artiste a créé son personnage et a participé par son talent, son inventivité, ses improvisations, à la création et à la richesse de chaque moment de ce spectacle.” Cela veut dire que chaque artiste qu’invite Bernard Kludlak participe à la création globale du spectacle, à l’enrichissement de son propos. Dans le Cirque Nouveau, tous les spectacles de se ressemblent pas, tous les numéros ne se suivent pas. Ils s’imbriquent et se répondent pour devenir une exploration de la vie et de l’homme, comme tous les arts majeurs. C’est cela, ainsi que la poésie qui en a fait la réputation et la spécificité, que j’attendais du Cirque Plume lorsque la salle a plongé dans le noir.

Et pourtant, malgré mon désir d’aimer, les premières minutes de L’Atelier du Peintre me déstabilisent. L’exposition des premiers tableaux – au sens propre comme figuré, puisque c’est là le sujet développé – attise certes ma curiosité, me fait sourire, mais mon imaginaire, lui, reste coi. Je retiens mon souffle, légèrement angoissée. Les espoirs et les déceptions sont si intimement liés. Et puis, subitement, les lumières rougissent, les instruments empruntent au jazz ses notes chaloupées et Kristina Dniprenko entame une danse amoureuse avec sa roue. Grâcieuse, légère, sensuelle, l’artiste n’impose rien ni ne démontre. Au contraire. Elle laisse vivre sa rencontre avec l’instrument, comme le peintre et son pinceau. La musique s’accélère enfin, plus saccadée, plus violente, plus passionnée. Kristina et sa roue embrassent l’air et la poussière dans un corps-à-corps charnel. Enfin, Kristina, l’oiseau aux plumes rouges, se pose sur le plateau du Cirque Plume et s’éloigne, tenant gracilement sa structure d’acier. Moment de suspension. Et le spectacle, sur la pointe des pieds, fait enfin son entrée dans mon cœur.

Plume n’est pas ce qu’on s’imagine. Plume n’est pas une histoire. Plume n’est autre que ceux qui l’habitent, parmi lesquels quelques êtres magiques, beaux, poétiques, et qui sont les portes ouvertes sur notre imaginaire.

Le bavardage caricatural d’un artiste de théâtre contemporain décrypté nous permettra sûrement de comprendre pourquoi, sans raison apparente, José Manuel Cano Lopez, dès mars 2008, a entrepris de diffamer nos écrits et s’est appliqué, avec Alan Poquet et François Nicolas Joannès, à nous a barrer l’accès de son festival de théâtre au Grand Pressigny. José Manuel Cano Lopez avait-il peur que le vide intellectuel qui anime sa pratique artistique devienne visible? Une radio à Prague, par exemple, demandait à José Manuel Cano Lopez ce qui le fascine tant chez Don Quichotte (écoutez-le avant de lire la suite).

Le directeur du Plessis théâtre, l’artiste de théâtre contemporain a de l’humanité plein la bouche, comme si un charcutier se nourrissait d’andouillette. Le faiseur de pièce de théâtre, celui qu’on appelle le metteur en scène, n’est pas précisément un homme ordinaire. Ce serait notre Tirésias national s’il avait l’envergure d’un tragédien grec, si son procès récent contre un auteur vivant ne lui donnait plutôt l’allure d’un comique du théâtre des bouffes. Au moins le théâtre de la Riche, son théâtre du Plessis, sauve-t-il les apparences du temple. Mais ce ne sont que des apparences, pourquoi veut-il aussi diriger un théâtre au Grand Pressigny, côté jardin? L’intention serait sûrement louable, n’était le foin de José Manuel Cano Lopez, de la Compagnie de théâtre José Manuel Cano Lopez et frères, sœurs, et cousines.

Et moi alors?

Car monsieur Cano Lopez, grand littérateur, sait pourquoi Don Quichotte fascine le peuple des charcutiers et des chômeurs. Ceux qui préfèrent se taire plutôt que de se faire écraser par les moulins. Don Quichotte «fascine parce que c’est la figure de l’humanité, explique notre représentant du théâtre national, c’est à la fois quelqu’un qui rêve d’un monde meilleur – c’est toutes les utopies du bonheur – et à la fois quelqu’un qui rêve de l’amour impossible. Donc partant de là, tout un chacun à travers les siècles, l’époque que l’on vit, quelque soit sa culture, n’a qu’une envie: celle d’être heureux et d’aimer.»

Vous avez bien lu, Don Quichotte n’est qu’un abruti monté sur une bourrique, un imbécile qui croit qu’Alan Poquet est là pour sauver l’humanité, donc, partant de là, chacun n’a qu’une envie, celle d’être heureux et d’aimer. La logique de Cano Lopez passe par des souterrains où le commun des mortels n’a pas accès. Mais nous, qui sommes et qui ne sommes que des humains logiques ordinaires, nous bravons les interdits. Même si le journaliste de Radio Prague anticipe sur le sens du poil, il invite le grand homme à remettre une couche: «Est-ce cela qui vous a fasciné vous, car s’atteler à l’adaptation d’une œuvre telle que Don Quichotte, c’est un sacré défi!»

Le grand homme de l’art ne se démonte pas. Non seulement il avait le sentiment mystique de participer à l’art pharaonique des embaumeurs, de participer aux rites sacrés des anciens tombeaux, en plus, si on lui donne l’occasion de laisser entendre, en ce mois de mars 2008, qu’il risque la censure du gouvernement de Nicolas Sarkozy,  (un sacré défi), ou mieux, la coupure du robinet des subventions, voyez s’il «Faut être gonflé, s’enfle-t-il aussitôt, c’est ce qu’on dit en général.» En général et en particulier.

J'ai une chance?

Tout autre aurait simplement souri en se disant que le théâtre de Chaillot vaut bien le théâtre de verre, que celui de l’Odéon n’a rien à envier aux abbesses et que faire du théâtre comique avec Molière, c’est ni plus ni moins intelligent qu’en faire de l’absurde avec monsieur Camus; au minimum pouvait-on dire que ce n’est pas plus dangereux, en tout cas, que de faire du pain pour les gens du canton, ou ramasser leurs ordures le jeudi matin, comme d’humbles corvéables de la commune du Grand Pressigny. Pas de quoi se prendre pour Bruce Willis.

Mais voyez-vous, monsieur Cano Lopez vous le dit, ne vous le redira jamais assez, alors, si vous n’avez pas compris la première fois écoutez, il va vous le redire, pour bien que vous fassiez la différence entre votre profession minable  et son théâtre beau classique: «Je suis metteur en scène français, mais je suis né en Andalousie. Quand des Tchèques m’ont proposé de faire une création à Hradec Králové, ce qui m’a posé question c’est: comment ça se faisait que quelqu’un comme moi se retrouve ici en République Tchèque? Quelles pouvaient être les raisons secrètes de vouloir passer deux mois ici, en dehors de l’envie de découvrir un pays et de travailler avec des acteurs que j’admire beaucoup.»

D’une, le grand homme oublie un peu le rôle des actrices, comme on verra, dans ses raisons secrètes. Deux, on aimerait savoir pourquoi les artistes comme lui, contemporains, on besoin de raisons secrètes sous prétexte qu’ils prennent l’avion plus souvent que les autres. Et je vais vous répondre. Si Don Quichotte est suivi comme une ombre par l’humble Sancho, c’est pour que les auteurs fantasmés par les grands metteurs espagnols puissent être entourés de femmes. Et non de moulins à vent, comme on le pensait jusque-là. Et si on me demandait pourquoi moi, qui ne suis pas assez bon pour le talent du grand Cano Lopez, je me retrouve à gratter dans la banlieue parisienne, en exil, je pourrais abuser le monde et dire, comme monsieur Lopez, que c’est à cause de l’Europe! Car il faut bien qu’elle se fasse, l’Europe, n’est-ce pas?

Comme auteur vivant je n’ai pas trouvé ma place au Grand Pressigny. Et la raison n’en est pas du tout secrète. Oui messieurs-dames. C’est le général Poquet qui a ordonné de dire que j’étais mauvais et malveillant, sur la recommandation de ce Grand Artiste. Écoutez  encore le grand prophète andalous, maître du spectacle, de la lumière et des songes:

«Immédiatement je me suis interrogé sur: est-ce qu’il y a une culture européenne? Qu’est-ce qui nous rassemble? Entre Français, Espagnols, Tchèques? La figure de Don Quichotte s’est rapidement imposée comme l’espèce de figure emblématique de notre envie à tous de vivre un monde meilleur et un amour idéal.» Ceux qui ont voté non à l’Europe que Sarkozy nous a remis à Lisbonne, sans passer par l’Andalousie, ne savait pas ce que le Grand Metteur savait, que le personnage de Cervantès, Don Quichotte, est une figure éminemment européenne. En plus, le Grand Metteur compte bien sur elle pour financer son petit théâtre en Touraine. Alors, allons-y, l’abruti sur sa bourrique deviendra le symbole de l’Europe, s’il faut!

Et Cervantès, là-dedans? Pas un mot. Les spectateurs sont priés d’admirer l’Europe en marche, celle qui fascine Cano Lopez qui connait bien le personnage vu que prendre les rasoirs électriques pour des micros sans fil est une maladie typiquement espagnole, qu’on voit souvent dans les théâtres de poche que fréquentait José Manuel à dix ans: «à cause de mes origines je connais bien le personnage de Don Quichotte. J’ai déjà fait une mise en scène il y a 20 ans là-dessus. Ca m’a donc permis de prolonger cette réflexion-là. Cette pièce, c’est un émerveillement, le fait de travailler sur des rêves, on est dans une aventure extraordinaire, humainement parlant, dramaturgiquement parlant. Mais c’est aussi un spectacle totalement onirique. »

Les acteurs

C’est très gonflé, dramaturgiquement parlant, ce spectacle, on croyait que c’était la version réaliste d’un con suivit d’un baudet, c’est en réalité le délire onirique d’un schizophrène déjanté. Je suis déçu, je préfère le théâtre romain, antique, les bancs des amphithéâtres. Totalement onirique, on est quand même rassuré, c’est pour ne pas parler ouvertement des réalités politiques et de la vie des autres, au cas où des oreilles de Nicolas Stazi traineraient dans la salle du théâtre de Hradec Králové. N’oublions pas que depuis qu’il a monté Garcia Lorca, José Manuel Cano Lopez est un résistant.

Et Cervantès? Toujours rien, mais les auteurs européen? Car le journaliste n’est jamais en reste pour en remettre une couche, dès fois que José Cano Lopez irait trop loin dans la dénonciation du pouvoir Maoïste: «Vous évoquez l’aspect onirique, il y a aussi tous ces auteurs européens qui évoluent dans la pièce, Büchner, Shakespeare… Comment construisez-vous la pièce?»

On avait déjà senti que les propos de Cano Lopez était un empilement de clichés, on peut être tout-à-fait rassuré, grâce à cette question on est à présent certains que le Grand Metteur en Scène Andalou atteindra la fin de l’interview sans attirer l’attention du KGB. Et surtout, en agrémentant son dossier de subvention à Strasbourg de quelques Noms propres  fumeux, tous mâles, tous auteurs, et surtout tous mort, car si je n’habite plus le Grand Pressigny c’est bien que pour Cano Lopez, le principal défaut est d’être vivant.

Et quand on réfléchit au vide abyssal du discours auto-légitimant de ce grand gourou, c’est normal, et aussi quand on voit le nombres de femelles (les fameux acteurs) qui jouent dans la pièce, ça rétablit l’équilibre: «Les personnages de ces auteurs qui interviennent, ce sont des personnages féminins. On va rencontrer Ophélie, Elvire, Marguerite de Faust, Marie de Woyzeck. Ce sont des personnages qui peuplent les rêves de cet auteur qu’on a appelé T.M. qui va s’identifier à Thomas Mann puis à Don Quichotte».

Dans les rêves de Cano Lopez, quand on est un auteur, vaut mieux être mort, donc. Mais quand on est un acteur, mieux vaut être une actrice. Merci monsieur le journaliste, je comprends mieux pourquoi ce grand metteur ne m’aime pas et, tandis qu’il montait son Don Quichotte à Prague, vérifiait régulièrement sur internet pour savoir ce que j’y écrivais, me trouvant finalement très peu à son goût. C’est que, vraisemblablement, il pressentait chez moi la capacité de ne pas prendre ses vessies pour des lanternes et ses plats à barbe pour des casques de Mambrin. Ôte-toi de mon chemin!

Que monsieur Cano Lopez me pardonne, si j’avais su alors qu’il était en proie à de tels vertiges, mon approche n’aurait pas été la même. Pas la fleur au bout du fusil en tout cas, comme dans cet article du Bondy Blog, écrit en juin 2008, alors que depuis plusieurs mois le grand homme de l’art méditait déjà de se payer ma tête…

Ce qui ne tue pas rend plus fort, il ne s’est pas payé ma tête. Ce grand Metteur sera désormais mon modèle et a bien mérité que, reconnaissant, je me paye son portrait. Je le remercie d’exister afin que les artistes honnêtes puissent admirer l’oeuvre immortel du grand Molière en la personne de son Tartuffe. Quand ils voudront désigner ce qui leur fait horreur dans l’art contemporain, ils auront désormais non pas un, mais quatre mots pour le dire: José Manuel Cano Lopez.

Alegría means ‘joy’ in Spanish. Alegría was fantastic! it was so so so magical and surreal, watching the whole thing live. and we got really good seats too! ok, the seats were those leftover seats, but it was better than most places. The show was a good way to celebrate the end of my first essay, which I spent 2 hours on, just doing citations (6 citation pages, the horror!!!!)

we left our place at 5.30pm. we were going to meet Gabe at Barakat because he was at Marble Slab Creamery with his friends. We had to introduce Ashley McCallan the white girl Shawarma. it’s those pita kebab things we ate at Mekah and I ate the paper. I DID NOT EAT ANY PAPER THIS TIME!! must be proud. (: Roochi couldn’t/didn’t want to join us because she has to study for her exams, so Gabe joined us instead. We got a 4-pack deal, so it’s cheaper than buy individual tickets.

Did I mention that I love this girl? She is the most random person I know. And to think that I never spoke a word to her during O-Week, now she’s my personal confidant.

Hop, ce weekend, c’était la convention de la jonglerie organisée par l’école de cirque de Bruxelles. Ce dimanche c’était la cloture sur la Grand-place avec des courses, dans concours & le lancé d’objets final. Après s’être battues durement avec le trafic bruxellois, on ast arrivées à la Grand-place. Sur le coup je me suis dit que mes photos étaient toutes proutes, mais finalement je ne suis pas si déçue que ça. Je m’excuse auprès de ceux qui n’aiment pas le noir et blanc, mais je suis encore et toujours dans ma phase carrée et noir&blanc.

C’est vendrediii ! Bientôt le weekend pour certain, déjà pour d’autres. Alors, qu’est-ce qu’on pourrait bien faire ce weekend ?

A Bruxelles, de aujourd’hui jusqu’à dimanche 16h, c’est le cirque à Bruxelles. Des workshops, des spectacles, des animations, … Il y en aura pour tous les goûts. En plus, dimanche, de 13h à 16h des jongleurs vont se battre pour gagner des prix (je n’ai pas très compris de quoi), mais en gros, ça va bouger ! Alors, si vous avez le temps, pourquoi pas y aller ? Surtout qu’ils n’annoncent pas de pluie pour dimanche (du froid, oui, de l’eau, non )

And, félicitations to Daddy for receiving the award! Though, can someone explain to me (in detail) what this award is?

Plus, I’m experiencing time warp problems. I fly through 12 time zones with no problem, but returning one hour for daylight savings has caused my body clock some masalah. Like, I’ve been waking up at 7am (which used to be 8am) everyday for the past 2 days. Sigh… Must re-adjust that one hour.

p/s: Next Thursday, Reema, Ashley, Gabe (Reema’s friend) and I are going to watch Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria.

Jeudi soir je suis allée voir le match de basket entre l’Entente et le club de Vilnius. Ce fut un beau match, mal engagé par l’Entente, puis terriblement disputé au cours des deux derniers quarts temps. Même si l’équipe d’Orléans a perdu, elle n’a pas à rougir du résultat obtenu.

Ceci dit, ce n’est pas sur les aspects sportifs de la rencontre que j’aimerais revenir mais sur leurs à-côtés.

D’abord une interrogation de béotienne : pourquoi les organisateurs des rencontres de basket se sentent-ils obligés de nous infliger une musique aussi forte? Ils ont peur qu’il n’y ait pas d’ambiance ou quoi? En plus, tous les spectateurs sont abondamment pourvus de boudins gonflables “ville d’Orléans” (tout un symbole…) qui font un bruit terrible quand on les choque les uns contre les autres. Effet sonore garanti. Côté spectacle, outre le match proprement dit, on a eu droit pendant l’entracte aux lancers de ballons d’un Superman bondissant, qui visait le panier de basket en sautant sur des trampolines; on a pu également admirer les trémoussements de joie d’un poussin en peluche géant sensé mettre le feu au stade; enfin, le bon public s’est réjoui en attrapant au vol des tee shirts lancés par des jeunes gens énergiques. La classe.

Ensuite un constat : la salle du zénith était pleine, disons à 95%. A vue de nez, il y avait entre 200 et 300 places libres. On est loin, très loin, très très loin des 10 000 places promises par le futur Très Grand Equipement. Surtout, j’aimerais bien savoir combien de places PAYANTES ont effectivement été vendues. Ce n’est pas là une remarque de pure forme mais un question essentielle pour qui s’interroge, comme c’est légitime, sur la rentabilité de ce l’énorme machine qu’on nous promet. Déjà dépenser plus de 70 millions d’euros pour ce truc, cela mérite réflexion. Si, en plus, il faut que chaque année on remette quelques millions d’euros sur la table afin de faire tourner le joujou municipal, nous frisons  l’irresponsabilité politique. Personnellement, je me pose de plus en plus de question sur la pertinence même de ce grand cirque, dont les coûts pharaoniques de fonctionnement risquent à terme de plomber les finances de la ville.

Enfin, une remarque de pur bon sens : le stationnement aux environs du zénith était, jeudi soir, totalement anarchique, avec des voitures partout, garées souvent n’importe comment, à perte de vue et  les parking d’Auchan pris d’assaut. Tout cela pour un peu de moins de 5000 spectateurs SEULEMENT, et ALORS QUE LE ZENITH EST DESSERVI PAR LE TRAMWAY. Qu’est ce que ce sera à l’Ile Arrault? Combien de parkings supplémentaires faudra-t-il construire? Où? Combien de nouvelles voiries devront-elles être aménagées en plus d’une passerelle annoncée sur la Loire (pour les voitures?)? Quelle est la cohérence écologique de tout cela? Et la cohérence urbaine? Je m’interroge…

Enfin, heureusement, nous avons les CMA et le forum citoyen pour en discuter. Ca me rassure…

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

Darren and Steve are best friends. They are also opposites in almost every way. Darren is the good kid, works hard in school, makes good grades, etc. Steve is the teenage punk from a troubled home that is apt to get into trouble. After finding a flyer for a traveling circus of freaks, the two decide to attend… and both of their lives are transformed.

During the show, Steve recognizes the magician to be a vampire from one of the many books he has on the subject. Darren, on the other hand, is far more interested in the unique spider that works with the magician/vampire.

When the show is broken up by local citizens and police, Darren and Steve are separated. Darren finds himself outside the dressing room of the magician/vampire, and decides he wants to see the spider again. Inside he finds the spider, but hears someone coming down the hall and grabs the spider and sneaks into the closet.

The magician/vampire and a friend step into the room and shortly thereafter… and so does Steve. Steve confronts the magician/vampire, and tells him he wants to be made a vampire, that he has nothing else to live for. The vampire sends him away.

When he gets the chance, Darren makes a run for it, and goes home, with the spider.

The next day, Darren takes the spider with him to school and meets up with Steve. The spider, accidentally freed from its cage, bites Steve, leaving him near death.

Darren makes his way back to the theater where they saw the show, hoping that the vampire can help Steve. The vampire makes a deal to help Steve, in exchange for Darren becoming his assistant… and a half-vampire.

Thus begins Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. This movie is an obvious foundation for other films planned for a series based on the Cirque Du Freak books, which is both good and bad. Good, in that it is trying to establish a world and we are introduced to a lot of characters so that we get a feel for that world. Bad, in that many of those characters are given little time to truly establish themselves.

But, if the film does spawn the sequels, that will be forgiven, perhaps even lauded as we don’t have to deal with the problems of introducing so many characters with each subsequent installment.

The real basis of the story, though, is the rivalry between two sets of bloodsuckers – the Vampires and the Vampanese. Vampires, in this setting, are the “good” guys – they still drink blood, but they only sedate their victims, they don’t kill them. The Vampanese, on the other hand, are violent and bloodthirsty, and power hungry. There has been a long tentative peace treaty between the two groups, but it is now threatened.

I’ll admit that I knew nothing about this film going in. I had seen one commercial for it, and decided to see it just because of the planned theme for this week. And, though the film had a lot of faults, I was pleasantly surprised overall.

This isn’t really a vampire film, though. There are “sorta” vampires in it, but it is almost… vampires sifted through Tim Burton’s brain and then highlighted with Harry Potter-ness… if that makes any sense. The film is more of a quirky fantasy than anything in the realm of horror. Because of that, a lot of people will be immediately turned off of the film. Me? I’m rather proud of myself. When I realized what this film was going for, I thought, “Oh, okay. Well, I’m not exactly the target audience, but let’s see what happens.”

And, sure enough, I’m not the audience for this film. I can’t imagine rushing out to get the DVD for it when it comes out, or even going out of my way to see it again… but I did find it enjoyable.

Yeah, I could talk about the shortcomings of the film all day. I could tell you that Chris Massoglia, who plays Darren, is essentially a clone of Ashton Kutcher and that his performance seemed disengaged. I could complain that the other freaks of the Cirque didn’t get anywhere near enough screen time, and that the large number of name actors were generally wasted in the film.

But, you know what? That is a bunch of nitpicky kinda stuff that, while accurate, didn’t really stop me from enjoying this movie. The effects for the movie were pretty cool, even if some were a little too obviously computer animated. The makeup on this film was stellar, though, top notch stuff that really made this world come alive.

And, though they had limited screen time, the cast of freaks were really good. Jane Krakowski as Corma Limbs was bizarrely perky.

Orlando Jones as Alexander Ribs was… well, Orlando Jones. (Orlando Jones seems to be himself in most things.) Ken Watanabe had an amazing presence as Mr. Tall, and Patrick Fugit was so fantastic as the Snake Boy that I’d like to see an entire movie based on that character.

And, there is Salma Hayak… being all Salma Hayak and hot and all.

The most amazing performance for me, though, had to be John C. Reilly as Crespley, the vampire. The role is so completely against type for him, but he manages to completely own it.

His turn as the weary, cynical vampire is enough for me to recommend this movie to anyone I know. He delivers some of the best lines in the film that range from dark, wry humor, to an almost sad melancholy, and delivers them well.

Honestly, other than when he appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and tore into Kevin Costner about when they both were doing For Love of the Game, this is my favorite thing John C. Reilly has ever done!

(And, by the way, if anyone knows where to find a clip of that, I’d be forever grateful to have it!)

For me, this movie was an unexpected treat. It won’t appeal to everyone, as it is definitely aimed toward mid-teens, but it wasn’t bad. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that I wouldn’t mind seeing this film get some sequels, if only to expand on this world and to see the actors in supporting roles get a chance to shine.

I’m giving Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant three out of five Running Steves.

If nothing, this film has made me want to seek out the series of books on which it was based.

to take my whole family to the theatre yesterday afternoon.

 i absolutely LOVE creativity in any form. and i LOVE exposing my children to it.  i want to get their creative souls flowing and dreaming.

we have a world class facility here in Lufkin called the Angelina Center for the Arts.  it has a beautiful and amazing theatre space called the Tom Temple Theatre (named for the man who funded and pushed for it) that has seen and will continue to see world class performances due to the tireless efforts of the Angelina Arts Alliance.

we had the privelege to attend a matinee performance of Cirque Mechanics production of Birdhouse Factory

it was an amazing show full of machines, acrobatics, trampolines and brilliant story and choreography.  the story was told using laughter, hand gestures and the word “Hey”.

i loved watching my 2 1/2 year old and 4 year old be entranced by the lights, sounds and movements of the show.  it was wonderful.  my favorite thing was when the trampoline crew was doing a very intricate, choreographed routine with split second precision and my 2 1/2 year old says, “I can do that”.  the trampoline, juggler and german wheel were the highlights of the show for me.

so it was great to see such a wonderful production and spend time with my family on a lazy Sunday afternoon in Lufkin.

As for this random post, I would like to share my night of being the bouncer at the cirque event. It was a really fun night, although I spent most of the night outside, I got to drink lots of free drinks, almost won a raffle prize (they uttered # 34 but it’s almost close to #33 too right. Haha. The “number thirty—….” was the really exciting part). I also got to eat lots of fruits and waffles.

The Ants was great too, it’s a drink made out of sugar, which tasted a bit like honey, YUM. As the bouncer, I got to know the other bouncer (I called him Kuya, but for others he was the door guy who looked like a man from the marines, he was wearing this white kind of soldier uniform with gold tassels at the side). I also crossed my arms from time to time (whenever my classmates would enter. Haha) and bounced the night away.

The only thing I regret did not know that I will be assigned the task of being the bouncer ahead of time if I had known; I would have worn my bouncer shirt, instead of wearing party clothes…so as to achieve the full bouncer effect. Haha.

Here is the schedule of children’s training sessions planned by Cirque Pistil for the All Saints Holiday period:

From October 27 to 29:  10:30-12:30/1:30- 8 years and over – 12 € per day, 30 € for the three-day session

On November 3rd and 4th: 10-12:30 – 4-6 year olds – 8 € per class or 14 € for both
