Newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo reports that the Brazilian Minister of Mines and Energy, Edison Lobao, revealed today in New York that at the height of the crisis Brazil almost bought Citibank:

"We could have bought and could have had great profit, in addition to prestige," he said. The minister said the decision not to acquire the bank was made by the government as a whole.

Mr. Lobao said that before the U.S. government had bought a third of Citi, the institution sought the Brazilian authorities. He said he did not know the "fair price" which was discussed with Brazil, but, considering the size of the country’sreserves, the country could have purchased a share of the institution.

In late July, Citigroup completed the exchange of securities of $60B that made the U.S an owner of a third of the bank. All the $ 20.3B in preferred stock and hybrid securities and equity securities issued publicly by Citi were exchanged in the offer for common shares, while the federal government shifted about $39.5B of preferred stock for new bonds.

Last summer, I went on a trip to the Dominican Republic. I had paid off a big chunk of my debt on a CitiBank credit card to pay for my expenses but I knew I would not be back home in time to pay the bill and so I left instructions to the SU to make a payment to the credit card when my paycheck was going to be credited to our account. She messed up the payment and I tried to catch it in time but a snowball of epic proportions prevented that and my APR went through the roof at 29.99%. No matter how much we called and pleaded, they would not bulge on my oldest credit card, no matter the fact that I had that credit card for 9 years. For a whole year, my APR was going to be 29.99% unless I was able to show that I was a good payer and that they could trust me once again.

I figured that after a few months of paying more than the minimum and some unlubricated back hole pounding, they would relent and lower the APR a bit especially since the holidays are approaching. But that was without counting on CitiBank’s humor. A couple of weeks ago, I received a letter from CitiBank saying that my 29.99% APR was becoming my definitive APR. Just now, just before the holidays, I am branded as an untouchable. “Go play with the others. We don’t care about you and don’t need your business. We already got your money, so who cares about you?” It was nice when all those dicks went crying to Capitol Hill asking for billions of our dollars to bail them out when they could not manage their business properly. It was nice when the government had to help them and bail them out because “they were too big to fail” while us, hard-working, decent American tax-paying citizens are held hostage by a bunch of thieves in suits. Of course now they don’t need our money so they will not try to sweeten the deal and give us a break. What for? “We can do very well without your few thousand dollars. Go get a Discover card!”

So, after being a customer for 9 years, someone in India closed my account without trying to negotiate a thing. It was a great card and I was happy with it but this is way too much.

Cheers, CitiBank and thank you for nothing.

Til then…

CitiBank Strikes Again

Most consumers are aware that the credit card vendors are raising their rates, lowering limits, enacting fees, and just outright closing accounts of their card holders before the new law comes into effect in Feb. 2010. Credit card holders must always remember that the credit card vendor will never look out for your interests; only their own. You are their meal ticket and they want you fattened up. This is all about making money off of (or taking from) the consumer and enriching the banks.

Now comes CitiBank with their latest attempt to appear as the white hat good guys riding in on their white horses to offer the card holder a way to reduce their interest rates. By using circular logic they offer you a reduction of the interest rate (that they just jacked up) if you regularly spend more. (I smell a trap at the pass awaiting all who enter there.)

Please read the linked article below and be aware that this is probably just the first of many more schemes and gimmick offerings by the credit card industry to get deeper into your pocket and keep their hand in there longer.

This is Money Under Your Futon’s 101st post! To celebrate this occasion and thank our readers, we are announcing our new e-mail address: moneyunderyourfuton [at] gmail [dot] com. Please feel free to send us your money-related questions, and we will try to respond to them in future posts.

* * *

It is hard to make money off your checking account. With a few exceptions, such as ING’s interest-paying Electric Orange account, most checking accounts give you no more cash than what you have already deposited into them. And some don’t even offer that, as their maintenance fees slowly chisel through your balance. But sometimes a bank promotion can transform a regular checking account into part of a relatively generous program.

With Citibank, for example, you can earn ThankYou points every month simply for having a checking account with a debit card and direct deposit. The ThankYou Network allows for point accumulation through several services and merchants, including Citibank and Expedia, though the fastest way to earn points is usually through one of Citibank’s credit cards tied to the program. But Citibank also gives its checking customers monthly ThankYou points for coupling the account with at least any two other services, such as having a debit card, direct deposit, or online bill payment. The monthly points range from 25 to 1,200, depending on the type of checking account and the number of services linked to it (click here for a table detailing the points per account type and number of services).

You can also earn even more ThankYou points if you use your Citibank debit card for purchases. Although the credit card offers tends to be more generous, Citibank has jumped into the bank trend of linking debit cards to reward programs in an attempt to attract more customers dropping credit cards in response to the crisis. For purchases made with a Citibank debit card, you can earn 1 ThankYou point for every $2 spent on signature purchases (i.e., a purchase that requires your signature on the receipt) and 1 point for every $3 on purchases using your PIN.

If you already have a ThankYou Network account, make sure to get points for your checking and debit card use. Call customer service (1800-THANKYOU) to link your checking account to the network. And if you have a Citibank checking account but are still not in the ThankYou Network, consider joining it and reaping rewards, especially if you use the other partners in the network, have a high-end account for which you can get a lot of points per month, or use your Citibank debit card frequently.

With the current low interest rates on savings account, you may find that your checking account gives you more bang for your buck.

“I’m so irritated,” said Susie Denton of Denton Properties, on Foothill and Commonwealth. “We’ve been affected, it’s delaying our business. Our phone lines are down, I can’t contact my clients and they can’t contact me.”

A construction worker, who wished to remain unnamed, said the power line was cut during construction at around noon.

The worker added a technician came to the scene 20 minutes after the incident and left shortly after 3:15 p.m. The technician planned to return at 7 a.m. Wednesday to “fix the problem.”

What is a recent Washington Post article (which I was hipped to by The Gen X Files blog) saying about GenXer attitudes in light of the current recession?

They’re antsy and edgy, tired of waiting for promotion opportunities at work as their elders put off retirement.

Huh. Doesn’t sound all that different than before the recession or during the last recession or before that one too. But there is something that’s different compared to when GenX workers were the age that Millennials are now. And that is this:

A good number of them are just waiting for the economy to pick up so they can hop to the next job, find something more fulfilling and get what they think they deserve. Oh, and they want work-life balance, too.

That’s right. Screw loyalty! To any company anyway. Because we’ve learned the hard way that such loyalty will get you nothing in the end.

I learned it long before I entered the work force, when I was witness to General Motors attempts to force my father out of his job as an engineer before he was ready. He worked for GM for 35 years but that mattered little because it was cheaper to higher a younger person who would work for less. I say attempts because my old man is stubborn as hell and he wouldn’t budge until he got a good retirement package, even when they demoted him to a basically a data entry clerk. Of course, years later GM reneged on their deal to provide health coverage to my father and mother for the rest of their lives.

I learned it again when, in my first foray into the corporate world, I (along with others) was booted in order to balance a budget. Of course, it wasn’t put that way but it didn’t need to be said.

More recently, I learned that there is no loyalty in the economic world when CitiCard arbitrarily hiked my APR from 12.24% to 17.99%. No real reason was given for this increase, although later I was reminded of the bill that goes into effect in Feb. 2010 that cracks down on the credit card companies; they’re all uping their rates before that law goes into effect. Fuckers! And it didn’t matter that I’d had a CitiCard for 17 years, that I’ve always paid my bill on time, that my wife also has a CitiCard, that our mortgage is through CitiBank or Citigroup or whatever the fuck they call themselves. And this is a company that was given government bailout funds.

But enough ranting. Because this whole situation has me wondering. What will come of GenXers being put out of work and not being afford the oppor5tunity to return to the same level again. Perhaps a resurgence in creative endeavors, not just technology-driven but in terms of art and Literature, music and movies, poetry etc. Certainly family cohesiveness will become stronger. Which is to say, as the article notes, Generation X is tought, resiliant, creative, and we’ve been here before. So bring it!

Citibank is pursuing an important element of public relations by building community relations. The past year has been tough for Citibank as it lost millions of dollars during the financial meltdown. Of course, Citibank’s own practices contributed to the losses so we should not feel too bad. Citibank is helping to feed hungry New Yorkers this year:

“City Harvest, the world’s first food rescue organization dedicated to feeding New York City’s hungry men, women and children is joining forces this holiday season with Citibank. As part of “Our Promise to New York,” Citibank will contribute $100,000 to help City Harvest rescue and deliver close to 400,000 pounds of food to feed hungry New Yorkers this Thanksgiving.

The partnership commenced earlier this month with a three-week-long food drive in 106 Citibank branches throughout the five boroughs. The food drive continues through November 14. By encouraging their customers and the local community to donate, Citibank hopes to collect 20,000 pounds of nonperishable ingredients for City Harvest to distribute to community programs around the city. Suggested donations include instant mashed potatoes, stuffing, canned green beans, canned yams, cranberry sauce, canned gravy — and all of the other ‘trimmings’ for a Thanksgiving meal.
This community relations publicity came shortly after Citibank announced new fees for its customers. Customers with checking accounts will how have to pay $7.50 a month if they do not maintain a balance of $1,500. In the past the fee was waived if customers set up direct deposit of paychecks or two automatic bill payments. http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local-beat/Citibank-to-Increase-Checking-Fees-69817797.html So there was some bad news for some constituents of Citibank as well.

Questions to Consider

What problems and/or benefits do you see in mixing these the positive and negative messages?

Is the community relations effort a logical action for Citibank—consistent with business? Why or why not?

What is the value of have the two figure skaters at the event?

Do you see any problems about announcing a filming of a PSA about Citibank’s community efforts? Why or why not?

Why does the new fee create a negative impression when it is a legal business practice?

How do you think the recent financial crisis will color constituents’ perceptions of any action, good or bad, taken by Citibank?

Citibank, starting Febuary 2010, will begin to charge customers who have less than $1,500 in their c

Citibank, starting Febuary 2010, will begin to charge customers who have less than $1,500 in their checking account an annual fee of $90.

But one Citi manager admitted the extra fees will be a tough sell, and likely will send many of his less-well-off customers to rival banks.

“Some are regular working folk who are trying hard to make ends meet and to pay their bills,” said the manager. “Fifteen hundred dollars is a lot of money. Many don’t have that kind of balance in their accounts.”

Fees are lucrative to banks. Pulling an extra $90 a year from its customers’ pockets may not seem like a lot of money to a bank, but multiply it by thousands of accounts and the dollars quickly add up.

“When this is aggregated, it can be highly significant,” said James McNulty, a finance professor at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

And if Citi finds that customers don’t flee, other banks might be tempted to copy it, said Peter Cohan, a management consultant. “If it turns out that this bank makes a lot more money from the move, other banks will start to do the same.”

But some of the more “customer-oriented” of the nation’s 8,500 banks may be tempted to attract new business simply by advertising the fact they do not charge maintenance fees, Cohan said.

He also warned that the Obama White House would not look too kindly on banks “trying to squeeze pennies out of the poor.”

With the rise of “free checking” offers, most bank customers pay very little in bank fees. About 70 percent of consumers spend $3 or less in monthly fees for checking account maintenance and ATM access, the American Bankers Association says.

And 56 percent pay nothing. That’s up from 52 percent in 2008, the ABA’s survey found.

Citibank’s move to boost fees comes as two of its main rivals, Bank of America and Chase, are taking an opposite tack, by curbing charges for overdrawn accounts.

Bank of America recently announced it would simply stop imposing fees on customers who overdraw their accounts by less than $10. It’s also limiting the number of fees for individual overdrafts to four per day.

Chase is eliminating overdraft fees on debit cards unless customers opt in. Customers who agree to the fees will be allowed to overdraw their accounts; those who do not agree to the fees will be declined if they try to overdraw their accounts.

Chase will also stop charging fees when accounts are overdrawn by less than $5. The changes come as Washington lawmakers push proposals to eliminate what critics say are unfair bank charges and fees.

(Kraft) today decided to directly approach the shareholders of Cadbury in a USD 16.3 billion hostile takeover bid. The two firms have been in negotiations since September when the Kraft made the initial offer to the Cadbury management. After the negotiations were not fruitful the Kraft management today decided to roll the ball in shareholder’s court.

The offer values a Cadbury share at GBP (£) 7.17 each which is a 26 percent premium to the price before Kraft made its original proposal. The offer is against the earlier expectations of the market analysts who had hoped that the current offer would be higher than the earlier bid.

Cadbury shares saw a 1.72 percent dip on the London Stock Exchange after the announcement was made but still managed to close above the bid price at £7.63 apiece. Kraft meanwhile seemed confident that the offer was fairly priced as the price was 13.9 times the value of Cadbury’s Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA).

The Cadbury’s management meanwhile seemed confident in their analysis of the situation when they claimed that the current offer is lower than September offer since Kraft’s share prices had dropped by 4percent since September.

“The repetition of a proposal which is now of less value and lower than the current Cadbury share price does not make it any more attractive,” Roger Carr, the company’s chairman, said in a statement. “As a result, the board has emphatically rejected this derisory offer and has strengthened its resolve to ensure the true value of Cadbury is fully understood by all.”

Source: nytimes.com

Analysts believe that the merger is a good and rational choice for the American manufacturer which will gain inroads in high growth markets like India, South Africa and Mexico with Cadbury brands like trident gums and Dairy Milk chocolate. Meanwhile they also noted that Kraft will have to raise the offer to at least £8 per share.

While the two firms still debate the issue the ball is now in shareholder’s court.

Irene Rosenfeld, the Kraft boss, took the battle to shareholders saying: ‘We remain convinced of the strategic merits for both companies of combining Kraft and Cadbury.’

In a direct challenge to Cadbury executives she said her proposal offers the ‘best immediate and long-term value‘ for Cadbury shareholders.

If the bid is successful, it will be one of the biggest mergers of the year. As of now both the firms are readying forces for a battle that may stretch for months, with an army of investment bankers and lawyers.

I’m reading Zag – a little book with the thesis that to succeed you not only need to be

I’m reading Zag – a little book with the thesis that to succeed you not only need to be good – but you need to be different from everyone else that is good. It’s a nice way to look at things.

Unfortunately for author Marty Neumeier he picked one bad example – a hazard when you write any business book to be sure:

So when my local bank bought a fifty foot outdoor poster emblazoned with the tagline “Nice. Since 1878,” they’d have been better off putting their money in a savings account.

…Citibank positioned their bank as the anti-bank with the tagline “Live Richly,” and headlines such as “For a guaranteed return on investment, try buying flowers”

Ouch. Citibank has since hit the wall hard, and a “nice” bank is very hard to find these days – especially in the USA.

Citi’s greed-oriented slogan was always bad – not just now, but when the book was published in 2007. Who wants to bank with someone that is encouraging its customers to blow money? It’s not a good look, and it was a pointer to gaps in the values of Citibank – gaps that ultimately resulted in the collapse.

It’s a lesson we can all learn from – being different and being good is not nearly as important as doing business in the right way and for the right reasons.

Incidentally – the Zagbook website is well worth a look – a great example of book promotion. It’s missing the vital component though – the ability to interact with the author.

Rarely do I invite guest speakers to come to talk to my university classes whom I barely know or hav

Rarely do I invite guest speakers to come to talk to my university classes whom I barely know or have never met. Usually they are people I am confident will deliver a good talk to my students because I have gotten to know them in the last several years I have been teaching in Kazakhstan. Last night was that special exception when my masters class was treated to Australian dry humor with Russell Banham speaking about his journey from Australia to working at Deloitte in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He had sage advice to deliver concerning his work experience but also about life values.

Russell began with a question about what happened in December of 1974, long before these Kazakh students had been born. They guessed and guessed but all were wrong. That was the date when Russell started working for Arthur Andersen accounting firm. If the blow-up at Enron had not happened in 2002, which impacted Russell in Brisbane, Australia, he claimed he would probably still be working for Arthur Andersen as a life-long employee. However, what is interesting with most competitive accounting firms is that mid-50s is the age of retirement from being a partner, but you can return as a mentor consultant for the same firm. Russell’s dry humor went right over my graduate students’ heads when he admitted, “I’m 55…I know I don’t look it.” To me, Russell looks like a happy, knowledgeable professor with distinguished, graying hair.

Kathy, his wife, was sitting in the back of the classroom with me and we both laughed. I believe people with dry humor need others around them that “get it,” Kathy has gotten it over 27 years now. To live in Kazakhstan for any length of time, you NEED a sense of humor. What was funny was that Russell, in an e-mail exchange, had initially asked me what his wife had “volunteered” him for. Never having met him, I didn’t know if this was a stern rebuke of my not letting him in on what I expected from him or if he was simply dashing off a quick note to me. E-mail messages sometimes have a strange way of getting things more complicated with even a simple inquiry. So I rattled off in my e-mail back to Russell all the different speakers he might know and what the titles of their talks had been: Chevron – “Change Management,” Citibank – “Effective Management,” Nestle – “Values and Principles” but I added that our speaker from Nestle had brought bars of chocolate.

Naturally, the competitive Australian which Russell no doubt is, and not wanting his organization of Deloitte to be outdone, did one better than Nestle. Russell brought Deloitte baseball hats as a gift for each of my students. Thanks Russell!!!

We’ve had some GREAT speakers in my English Speaking and Listening class and next week we will have our final speaker of the semester with Julia Connelly talking about her passion.

CATS, the second longest-running musical in Broadway history, will have a limited run at the Cultura

CATS, the second longest-running musical in Broadway history, will have a limited run at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) beginning July 24, 2010. This production will feature Tony winner Lea Salonga as Grizabella, and an international cast that will primarily come from Australia, and the United Kingdom.

CATS is one of Broadway’s British imports, which first opened in London’s West End in 1981, was truly phenomenal – the production at the Winter Garden Theatre ran for 18 years. The musical won numerous awards including both the Laurence Olivier Award and Tony Award for Best Musical.

Grizabella is a former Glamour Cat who has lost her clout and sparkle, and now only seeks to be accepted by the “Jellicle Cats” society, whose members are anxiously waiting to be reborn into a new life.

“I’ll be playing Grizabella (aka the non-dancer part). As for what attracts me to her, besides the big song? Grizabella is The cat that shone in the spotlight once upon a time, and doesn’t anymore. She’s scraggy, dirty, ugly, and relives the Glory Days in her mind. It’ll be interesting to play someone that once shone, and no longer does,” noted Lea.

The show, based on the OLD POSSUM’S BOOK OF PRACTICAL CATS by T.S. Eliot has music by musical theatre master Andrew Lloyd Webber (The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard). Its musical numbers include the hit song MEMORY.
