Our whole team has worked hard and is dedicated to improving the site for our global community. The last several weeks have been very busy here at Allvoices HQ.  The whole team is working hard and is dedicated to improving the Allvoices experience for our growing and valued global community.

One of our main focuses is making the site as fast as possible.  We are are tuning many areas of the system to make it faster, better, and stronger.  This includes lots of under-the-hood fixes and a revision to the site layout and design.

The new design will be released in the coming weeks.  The new layout will make the experience faster and easier to find the news that matters to you whether it’s local news, latest cellphone contributions or global news shaping the world.  Stay tuned for new developments.

Welcome to the re-launch of the allvoices blog. I am Kathy Jacobs, the new Community Guru here at allvoices.com  My job? Connect all of you with allvoices. Report problems that you have with the site. Share news about the site and the company. Encourage people to join and report. Advocate allvoices to the world and the world to allvoices.

Nice little job, huh? At the end of my first week, I am already feeling great about the whole thing!

For those of you who don’t know me:

I am a former small business owner. I am a social media geek. I love connecting people with the tools they need, the people that can help them, and the events they need to attend. I am a news hound. I still read the newspaper just about every day, but I also get news from many different online sources. My involvement in newsgroups, user groups, conferences, and social media has brought me here. I believe in making a positive difference. My personal tag line for the last decade has been:

I believe life is meant to be lived. But:
if we live without making a difference, it makes no difference that we lived

I think we all need each other to survive. More than that – I think we need to understand each other better in order for the world to survive.

For those of you who don’t know allvoices:

allvoices is citizen media. Our goal is to get you involved in the news. Not just the big things, but all the news that matters to you. We want you to join, to report, and to talk about the news. We want you to share your news directly via the site and via your mobile phone. We are looking for new content. We aren’t looking for copys of things others have reported – if the story has already been reported, we want you to share your take on it.

In the near future, I will be sharing the personal stories of Amra Tareen and Erik Sudelof, the founders of allvoices. Both of them come to citizen media due to news events that affected them personally. Like me, they want to use allvoices to make a difference in the way that people get thier news.

In questo blog se ne parla spesso del potere che acquistano gli utenti della Rete in relazione all’informazione (già il nome del blog dice tutto! ). In questigiorni, navigando in Internet, mi sono imbattuto in una iniziativa di YouTube riguardante il giornalismo partecipativo che, quindi, non potevo non citare. Riporto un articolo di Webnews, uno dei migliori che ho trovato sull’argomento:

“Il più grande portale per la condivisione di video online ha da poco avviato una nuova sezione, interamente dedicata al citizen journalism, l’attività informativa svolta in prima persona dai cittadini in tutte le parti del mondo. L’innovativo canale lanciato da YouTube mira ad aggregare e segnalare alle centinaia di migliaia di utenti del portale i migliori contenuti realizzati per raccontare le notizie spesso trascurate dai grandi mezzi di comunicazione.

Ogni giorno sono infatti migliaia i video caricati dagli utenti a puro sfondo informativo. Spesso meno conosciuti e sopraffatti dalla popolarità dei filmati creati per puro svago e divertimento, i piccoli reportage – confezionati direttamente da chi è coinvolto in prima persona nella notizia – raccontano realtà affascinanti e ignote dalle enormi distese africane alle grandi realtà metropolitane densamente abitate, passando per la miseria delle baraccopoli e delle loro genti dimenticate. Armati di strumenti spesso rudimentali, i fautori del giornalismo partecipativo vanno alla ricerca delle notizie sul posto, riportando in auge i reportage di inchiesta, ormai in via di totale estinzione e sostituiti dall’immobilismo del desk.

La nuova responsabile per le news assoldata da YouTube avrà dunque il compito di riportare in luce le storie raccontate sul portale con i meccanismi del citizen journalism. Un incarico non semplice, che potrà essere realizzato con sufficiente meticolosità solamente con l’aiuto delle centinaia di migliaia di utenti che ogni giorno frequentano YouTube.

Anche se, in una scala differente ed esclusivamente orientata ai nuovi media, è difficile non scovare una certa analogia tra l’iniziativa da poco lanciata da YouTube e l’esperienza di Current TV (ne parlavo QUI), il canale televisivo voluto dal premio Nobel Al Gore. Recentemente lanciata anche in Italia sulla piattaforma satellitare Sky, l’emittente televisiva basa i propri palinsesti sui contributi multimediali inviati dai suoi telespettatori che hanno anche modo di votare i filmati migliori sul sito Web di Current.

In misura più contenuta, ma con la forza di un bacino molto più ampio di utenti, anche YouTube sembra compiere i primi passi nel crescente, e sempre più fecondo, settore del giornalismo partecipativo. Avviata quasi in sordina, attraverso il passaparola della Rete, l’iniziativa del portale di video sharing potrebbe rivelarsi particolarmente efficace e, sicuramente, meno dispendiosa dell’ambizioso progetto portato avanti da Current TV“.

Che dire? Dopo il blogging, le piattaforme di giornalismo partecipativo come FaiNotizia e altre, l’arrivo in Itali a di Current TV, adesso anche Youtube si apre all’informazine fatta dagli utenti. Forse finalmente qualcosa si sta muovendo in questa direzione e probabilmente presto si potrà sfuggire ai filtri editoriali, ai condizionamenti politici, economici e ideologici che condizionano l’informazione!
Sono troppo ottimista?

Sembra essere un buon momento per il Citizen Journalism. Il cittadino-reporter sarà una delle figure più importanti dei prossimi anni e anche il web si è accorto di questa rivoluzione antropocentrica, aprendo nuovi spazi dedicati alle notizie provenienti dal basso, che entrano di diritto a far parte dei nostri palinsesti.

Il primo esempio che voglio citare è YouReporter, piattaforma tutta italiana dove l’utente può inserire foto e video che diventano notizie. I materiali possono essere ripresi gratuitamente anche dalla Tv e dai siti d’informazione per integrare articoli, servizi, reportage etc… a patto che venga citata la fonte. Insomma, un luogo virtuale dove viene dato spazio ad uno sguardo locale che rischia di non entrare mai nell’agenda setting.

Un’altro esempio illustre è quello di YouTube che ha deciso di aprire un canale dedicato esclusivamente al citizen journalism, chiamato Citizen News: lo scopo è quello di aggregare video di informazione vera e propria che potrebbero perdersi nel marasma di c…..e di cui è pieno il portale. Per concludere e giusto per rimarcare che qualcuno alla RAI si salva, Gianni Minoli e RAI Educational hanno deciso di lanciare un nuovo format, Citizen Report, basato sul contributo degli utenti della rete, che possono raccontare le proprie storie. Finalmente un esempio serio di interazione tra la rete, gli utenti e la televisione.

Il palinsesto (e anche noi) ringrazia.

Citizen News è il vlog di citizen journalism realizzato da YouTube. Praticamente è la stessa cosa di Current TV ma con un numero di potenziali contributori assai maggiore, eppure anche qui finora le notizie non sembrano granché interessanti. Però la direttrice del canale, Olivia, ci piace molto.

Citizen News é o nome do canal criado pelo You Tube para potencializar a produção colaborativa dos seus usuários. Em formato de videoblog, os conteúdos noticiosos serão agrupados e apresentados.

Importante passo do You Tube para destacar a própria “estrutura colaborativa” que alimenta o site. Iniciativas como essa explicam os motivos para que jovens da América Latina preferem a internet à televisão.

Os diversos canais criados no/pelo You Tube rompe com o “aprisionamento espaço-temporal” que a grade de programação estabelece com a audiência, altera a própria lógica do cidadão “aparecer” no noticiário (geralmente três princípios: quando ele é a notícia, quando ele é atingido pela notícia ou quando é fonte para a notícia), a co-autoria embaralha tais princípios, ora o cidadão é notícia, faz a notícia, é fonte, um mix que coloca em debate os próprios critérios de noticiabilidade dos mass media e os valores que configuram o jornalismo como uma instituição social. Para quem pesquisa o jornalismo colaborativo é uma excelente “objeto” para analisar a relação dos gêneros televisivos com o jornalismo open source.

Ken Krushel  knows what television network news is all about.

He was senior vice president of Strategic Planning and Business Development at NBC where he oversaw new media development, including digital broadcast, digital cable television and Internet activity, and designing the company’s “digital strategy” as it related to the migration from analog to digital broadcast.

Almost two years ago, I met him at the Eurasian Media Conference in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We were both speakers.

There we laid out plans for a website that would present a different kind of news – created by independent videojournalists around world. An open platform that could get beyond the time, cost and intellectual limitations of conventional television news.

We built a site called Citizen News.

Then we went out to try and raise money for it.

It was not easy.

We were late. After Youtube and just as newspapers were starting to migrate into video.

We talked to everyone in Silicon Valley. (If you’d only been here six months ago, we would have funded it).

No one did.

But Ken never gave up on the idea of a new kind of video online journalism.

He begged, borrowed, cajoled for content. He worked selflessly for free.

He continues to do so to this day.

It’s more than a labor of love. It’s driven by a deep belief on his part that television journalism can be much much better than it is; that there is enormous potential here that we are just beginning to tap into. That the web and video can provide a new and different platform for a much wider spectrum of voices.

It’s more than a business decision. It comes from someplace deep inside and an intense dedication to making the world a better, more interesting and better informed place.

Citizen News may never make a profit.

But its an awfully good idea, and its in the hands of a very driven and dedicated man.
