http://deliver.citrix.com/go/citrix/ehvexpress

Pool up to 1 Terabyte of disk space

“Thin Provision” storage to your virtual machines. See how much capacity it saves!

Speed up application performance using surplus server memory to cache I/Os from the virtual SAN

Snapshot: Instant Volume Cloning and Fast Disk-to-Disk Backups

It amazes me in this day and age that something as fundamentally simple as the clipboard in a window

It amazes me in this day and age that something as fundamentally simple as the clipboard in a windows environment can have issues, but it does happen… Especially in a multi user environment.

If you experience clipboard issues with office, Lotus notes and other copy and paste capable programs you have have a session memory issue!

The session View size and pool size have a massive part to play in 32 bit citrix environments, these size options dictate the amount of graphical memory that can be assigned to each session. The ceiling for these options in 32 bit are just 16mb, which rediculously low in modern days.

Taking equal parts of graphically heavy applications like Office 2007 and Known citrix killers like lotus notes, it really isn’t long until these limits spill over into horrible clipboard and copy / paste disasters. Take one step further and implement Microsoft App-V and you are in serious trouble.

If alike me, you run an environment that requires all the above nasties, help is at hand. After 12 months of continued troubleshooting I’ve found a happy medium of 64mb between low limits and too high limits.

To test the same, simply bash these off the following command lines and reboot, waving goodbye to your horrible clipboard issues:

reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management” /v SessionPoolSize /t reg_dword /d 64 /f
reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management” /v SessionViewSize /t reg_dword /d 64 /f

Disclaimer:

We currently run with 10gb of memory, allowing us to allocate this extra 112mb of memory per user. If you require these options, consider a lower value or upgrade your ram capacity

Recently I ran out of storage space on a Citrix XenServer because a number of local virtual disks ha

Recently I ran out of storage space on a Citrix XenServer because a number of local virtual disks had become orphaned and deleting them proved to be a little difficult, so, I thought it might be useful to share what I found lest others suffer the same issue.

I think the problem occurred because I removed disks which were attached to some VMs which had been created from templates, because I was using them with Provisioning Server and had run the XenConvert stage to copy the hard disk to the vDisk. This was so I could test that they worked without local disks, but didn’t want to delete them in case there was a problem.

I found two methods – the “hard” way and the “easy” way. Guess which I found first?!

Method 1.

From a console shell prompt run the command:

xe vdi-list

Note that vdi is short for “virtual disk image” in this context. This should result in a display similar to the following with one entry per storage item so will include ISO images as well as virtual disks. Note that this will list all items, not just orphaned ones. Pipe the output to “more” or redirect to a file and use “vi” or similar on the file produced to find the oprhaned items.

uuid ( RO) : cb5781e0-c6f9-4909-acd6-5fd4b509d117

name-label ( RW): Vista master for UIA

name-description ( RW): Created by template provisioner

             sr-uuid ( RO): 72cc0d44-bea7-6c15-cf8d-c2965ca495b2

        virtual-size ( RO): 25769803776

            sharable ( RO): false

           read-only ( RO): false

Fortunately, I knew the name of the disks that were orphaned so passed their uuid values as an argument to the “xe vdi-destroy” command thus:

xe vdi-destroy uuid=cb5781e0-c6f9-4909-acd6-5fd4b509d117

The storage space freed up by deleting the disks will eventually be realized but to force this, you can manually instigate a re-scan of the containing storage repository. For this, we need to know the uuid of the storage repository which we have in in the “sr-uuid” field in the original “xe vdi-list” command above:

xe sr-scan uuid=72cc0d44-bea7-6c15-cf8d-c2965ca495b2

Method 2.

Add the disk to an existing VM and then delete the disk from the “Storage” tab in XenCenter for the VM when it is powered down

I hope this is of use to someone?…

Don’t get me wrong, picking the right technology is extremely important–just ask any manufacturer! And much of the technology, like virtualizing desktops, has matured and CIOs are more confident to deploy. But not having the skilled people and honed processes are, in my estimation, an order of magnitude more important.

According to HP’s research, the biggest barriers or inhibitors to virtualization are: upfront costs, staff training/experience, gaining approval from corporate management, and infrastructure planning.

At World Wide we recognized the importance of people & processes, so we offer a variety of services including virtualization consulting that assesses an organization’s “operational readiness.” It includes an examination of the “as is” infrastructure as well as the management tools and processes. Steve Chambers, a Cisco virtualization evangelist in the U.K, says that Cisco has put this “readiness assessment” in a framework called VOMA (Virtual Operations Management Assessment). VOMA is about “institutionalization of technology across six dimensions:”

Management Processes

Organization

Governance

Technology

People

Metrics

via ViewYonder » Poor IT hygiene is a barrier to technology adoption.

The field of players is expanding and CIOs now benefit from more virtualization infrastructure choices than ever. Experienced CIOs know, while the technology is important, capitalizing on the benefits of virtualization is more about the people and the process.

I had an earlier post, Stand Up and Get Ready, that was more about manufacturers and resellers being ready for the economy to turn. I now ask CIOs and IT leaders as a whole….

Are you virtualization ready? More importantly, are your people and processes ready?

Enviroman (Oliver Sills, Product Manager for AppSense Environment Manager) was in the office the oth

Enviroman (Oliver Sills, Product Manager for AppSense Environment Manager) was in the office the other day, pestering me about signing a petition to change the Environment Manager “colour” from green to Tangerine – something to do with some UK footy club. I told him the Budgie Smugglers don’t look any better in Tangerine, so stop sitting on my desk

Just about then the phone rings, it was a Solution Architect from a large software company. “Tell him about Personalization”, Environman whispers in my ear. I covered the phone, told him to go way, and went back to the call.

Turns out one of his clients was trying to deploy 600+ Virtual Desktops, and it had just dawned on them that Policy, Profiles and the User Personality had become a nightmare to maintain when using a Non Persistent Pooled Desktop environment.

Think about it – each user, every time they log in, has a brand new base model PC.

This Client did a Proof of Concept – easy – P To V a couple of desktops, load a client, connect in using RDP – jobs a good’un – look Mum no hands – I’m doing VDI

So then they ticked all the boxes, app compatibility – tick, ease of use – tick, centrally managed and deployed – tick, user acceptance – tick, user personalization – tick – hey, not so fast.

You CAN have a tick in that box if you are talking One to One, dedicated hosted virtual desktops for a small number of users – otherwise, you need to think again.

It’s like when I started talking to the Aussie market about AppSense back in 2004 “Yes I hear what you say, but I’ve only got 5 servers – it’s not a problem” 6 months later “Yes I hear what you say, but I’ve only got 10 servers – it’s not a problem” 6 months later “Our farm is out of control, now we have 15 Citrix servers we now understand what you guys were on about 6 months ago”

As we always say – we don’t hold a grudge – and we don’t ever say “I told you so”. After all we’re from AppSense – we’re here to help

Virtual Desktops are starting to ramp up, and unfortunately with some clients projects, the devil will be in the detail.

Like the client we are now helping, they thought the “Profile Stuff” built into the VDI solution would be the easy bit. “There’re tools built into the base product” they say – yes there are, but those built in tools can be compared to other in-built free software like NTBackup – yes it will backup a file, but it’s not granular enough, and it just won’t cut it in an Enterprise environment – that’s why companies invest in a Third Party backup products.

AppSense is exactly the same. Built in “Profile” tools or features are o.k. for a simple small deployment where one size fits all, but the reality is most organisations will need more. The reason for this is simple, profile management tools are there to solve profile issues such as bloat and logon times.. they are not designed to be cross platform, cross delivery mechanism personalization solutions, not to mention the need for policy action control also.

It’s just not as easy as saying “We use Roaming Profiles and redirected folders” – try reimaging every PC in your business, every morning, and see if it causes a few hassles for users.

So we keep plugging away out there – educating the market in advance, some clients “get it” up front and they’re the ones with the smooth running, no surprises VDI projects.

As for the rest of you – we’ll be here, happy to answer questions, happy to show and tell – all with passion and enthusiasm.

After all – we’re from AppSense – we’re here to help

I recently wrote “How to Carry Your Office on a Stick,” which showcased the best ways to install portable applications on a USB flash drive. But what if you’re the type of person that doesn’t like to carry a flash drive around or happens to lose or forget it? The solution then might be a desktop in the clouds. This idea of an online or virtual desktop that you can access from any computer has actually been around for years, but continues to evolve with time. Here are some of the best ways to host your desktop online today.

Free Web Desktops

If you’re not interested in hosting your own virtual desktop or are not quite ready to invest in an expensive corporate class solution like the ones offered up by Microsoft (s msft), WMware (s vmw) and Citrix (s ctxs), then you might be interested in some of these free web desktop offerings. These services provide extremely easy do-it-yourself solutions that even the least technically-savvy individuals can set up.

iCloud from Xcerion provides a super-slick web desktop that you can set up in a few minutes. Its free public version provides 3GB of online storage for files and documents, and plenty of free applications such as a Twitter client, instant messenger for many services, email, calendar and much more. You can also add free widgets to your desktop, just like your regular one. It’s a neat product, but one issue that Simon highlighted when he wrote about it earlier this year is a lack of browser support.

EyeOS is another cloud desktop, but it’s a little different because it’s an open-source platform that you can either install and run on your own server, or you can create a free hosted account. One of the big advantages this one has — besides being able to host your own online desktop — is that you can actually create Word documents and spreadsheets with the included web applications. You can save your documents on your virtual desktop or download them to your local computer. Another interesting aspect is the fact that you can even build your own EyeOS web applications thanks to its open-source development platform. There is a helpful wiki for developers too.

G.ho.st stands for Global Hosted Operating System and it also offers a web desktop where you can run applications and store files that you can access anytime from anywhere.

One of the best things about G.ho.st is that it offers live connection to Google Docs (s goog) and Zoho Office apps which means you can work on your word documents, spreadsheets and presentations all from your web desktop. There are also many other slick web apps and widgets that you can add to customize your desktop. You can save files on your 15 GB G.ho.st drive and even share files or folders with others. I especially like the ability to share files with non-G.ho.st users by making them public.

There’s also a G.ho.st lite version which is actually a mobile device version of the platform. This is exciting because it means you can access your files on your virtual desktop from your smartphone.

Self-Host Your Own Virtual Desktop

The concept of self-hosted virtual desktops isn’t new by any means, but the technology has matured over the years and has now become more affordable for smaller firms. The biggest self-hosting desktop solutions were originally from Citrix and Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services. Thankfully, the incredible expense involved with establishing virtual desktops has steadily declined through the years.thanks to newer services like like VMware’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Citrix has also unleashed its own open-source virtual solution with its Xen Hyperviser product line.

It definitely is cool technology and one of the missing pieces for a complete dynamic desktop solution. Pete Blum, the Product Manager for XenClient, posted a couple of nice introduction videos discussing the various features of XenClient.

Hi, Citrix Receiver is a new lightweight software client that makes accessing virtual applications a

Hi,

Citrix Receiver is a new lightweight software client that makes accessing virtual applications and desktops on any device as easy as turning on your TV.

Much like a satellite or cable TV receiver in a broadcast media service, Citrix Receiver allows IT organizations to deliver applications as an on-demand service to any device in any location with a rich high definition experience.

As long as employees have Citrix Receiver installed, IT no longer has to worry about whether they are delivering to a PC in the office, a Mac at home, or an iPhone on the road. This approach radically simplifies desktop management for IT and gives end users far more flexibility and independence in how and where they work.

I used the following steps to install Citrix Receiver ( Client ) on my Fedora 11 box

Download the rpm file of Citrix Client ( Citrix Receiver ) at http://www.citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/details.asp?downloadId=3323&productId=186&c1=sot2755#top

On the shell issue the following command :-

su

< root password >

yum install openmotif

Note :- openmotif libs are required for Citrix client and they are not present in newer Fedora installations

cd < directory where the citrix RPM file was download >

rpm -ivh ICAClient-11.0-1.i386.rpm

SELinux needs to be in permissive mode or disabled.

I referred http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=221173 and executed the following commands

mv /usr/share/fonts/cjkuni/fonts.dir /usr/share/fonts/cjkuni/fonts.dir.old

mv /usr/share/fonts/cjkuni/fonts.scale /usr/share/fonts/cjkuni/fonts.scale.old

Finally from the Fedora menu I can start the Citrix receiver .. Eureka !!!!!!

We recently had a problem after a Citrix rebuild where we were seeing thin clients intermittently di

We recently had a problem after a Citrix rebuild where we were seeing thin clients intermittently disconnect from the citrix servers. Nothing in the event logs, just a lovely error on the Thin Client (Igel) reporting a Driver protocol error. The users could immediately reconnect, but 10-15 disconnects a day was getting a bit annoying for poor Joe Soap.

The problem was very difficult to track down due to absolutely no logging or even acknowledgement of the problem in any event logs.

We found that the reinstall was enabling the advanced IP features in Windows server 2003 involving TCP Offloading from the Nic to the CPU, Citrix and particularly thin clients do not like this feature one bit.

To disable these options, enter the following keys into the registry and reboot.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
“EnableTCPA”=dword:00000000
“EnableRSS”=dword:00000000
“EnableTCPChimney”=dword:00000000

On a side note, I’ll be disabling these keys going forward on all server builds, its not a nice feature to implement unless the application is aware of the offload.
