Torn between the gutter and the free hand out. Or were you simply curious? At first you didn’t seem interested, then we couldn’t get rid of you. No one could change your mind or for that matter distract you as you slinked down the sidewalk, ambled across the street and then onto the parallel sidewalk and then right behind us.

Without realizing it we switched sides of the streets and you were right there with us. Still, it was clear that the gutter was calling to you. Something was calling to you. You had this incredible sense of purpose. You were focused on something. I admired that. In fact I envied it a bit. It didn’t matter what you were after you were after something.

We sped up. It’s not that didn’t want to be near you or anything, we were just afraid that if you followed us then something would happen. You would end up in peril and all because you couldn’t stop. And you wouldn’t stop. You just kept going. I kept looking over my shoulder and there you were. Unfazed by my stare.

Soon we thought it best to try and ignore you. Although we were curious, it was clear that it was best if we paid no attention to you. As we got nearer to city center I glanced over my shoulder again and you were a small shadow in the distance. Either stopped or on your way back. I meant you no disrespect, but you can take it as you like.

After we were done we went back basically the same way we came and we saw nothing of you. Did you actually get what you were looking for? Folks who actually stopped for you? Did you find something better? I believe that you found your way into the gutter. Normally that is a cause for concern, but you’ll find your way.

Time is getting close for the long-awaited opening of extravagant and opulent Las Vegas entertainmen

Time is getting close for the long-awaited opening of extravagant and opulent Las Vegas entertainment and retail businesses galore. Not just ordinary businesses, but the most haute and opulent on the planet!

If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be up close and personal with $8.5 billion of opulent entertainment and retail establishments, then don’t miss out this December when CityCenter gradually opens up in Las Vegas.

With the economy tanking and only slowing recovering, most experts agree that further business casino and hotel developments down the Las Vegas Strip or adjoining properties will be on a hiatus for at least five years, more likely 10 years.

Las Vegas Backstage Access has written on the many unique CityCenter planned developments, but now has further updates to share. As casino area slots are being tested, finishing touches are being applied at the Aria casino-hotel tower.

Some restaurants are on the second floor at Aria, near Elvis Theater, or located in The Crystals, the nearby 500,000-square-foot retail, entertainment and dining district- a city within a city.

Oversize Elvis belt buckles cover the exterior of Cirque du Soleil’s Elvis Theater. Reportedly, a “big splash” for this is planned for Jan. 8, which would have been Elvis’ 74th birthday.

In terms of artwork, there is Maya Lin’s depiction of the Colorado River made out of recycled silver. Henry Moore’s woman and child reclining is also auspicious, purchased for about $5 million and now worth about $7.5 million– that’s just some of the $40 million spent on CityCenter’s artwork.

A prominent attraction at The Crystals, is Mastro’s Ocean Club, which is housed in a “tree house,” over the main floor, the 14-foot ice sculpture that magically re-form after a 90 percent meltdown and CityCenter’s version of Rome’s Spanish Steps.

There is something for everyone at CityCenter. It will surely be the Las Vegas center of attention for a very long time.

Morphoses in Christopher Wheeldon’s Rhapsody Fantaisie, photo by Erin Baiano

During its third season at City Center last week, Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company offered six ballets over two programs, along with behind-the-scenes videos of the dancers rehearsing at Martha’s Vineyard, live music, and a pre-curtain greeting from Christopher Wheeldon himself. There always seems to be a lot of fuss (both good and bad) over this three-year-old company – the “Ballet=Sexy” motto sparked interest in its first season, high-profile costume designers and dancers got attention in 2008, and this year’s uninspiring videos received criticism for focusing on butterflies and blueberries instead of on the choreographic process – along with speculation about how Wheeldon’s choices shape The Future of Ballet. Once all of the excess is stripped away and the expectations about Wheeldon filling Balanchine’s shoes are set aside, Morphoses appears to be a struggling dance company with flawed programs and inconsistent choreography – not unlike many other contemporary ballet troupes.

Last Friday evening’s program started out strongly with Continuum (2002), part of Wheeldon’s trilogy of works set to music by Gyorgy Ligeti. Featuring four couples, a thornily intriguing piano score, upside down scissoring legs and spidery hands, the work was structurally and choreographically similar to Wheeldon’s 2001 ballet Polyphonia. The geometric partnering was set within a meditative atmosphere that felt otherworldly yet grounded.

Morphoses in Wheeldon’s Continuum, photo by Erin Baiano

Paul Lightfoot and Sol León’s Softly as I Leave You, second on the program, was an insincere, angst-filled portrayal of the end of a relationship. Drew Jacoby and Rubinald Pronk are talented dancers, but this work, which used the unusual pairing of Bach and Arvo Pärt, mainly featured their high extensions and flexible torsos as they struggled in and around a coffin. They deserved better, and so did the audience.

Unfortunately, Wheeldon’s newest work, Rhapsody Fantaisie, was a lackluster close to the program. Set to a lush piano score by Rachmaninoff with a bizarre backdrop of windsocks by Los Carpinteros, six couples in deep red costumes swept through movement that combined ballet vocabulary with folk dance influences and imaginative lifts. But it was all a blur, rushing by so quickly with nothing and nobody catching the eye, except for the radiant Wendy Whelan in a duet with Andrew Crawford. Their pas de deux demonstrated how Wheeldon’s movement is most enlightening when it slows down and allows both the audience and dancers to pause and sink their teeth into his choreographic cornucopia.

Wheeldon recently confessed that he’s uncertain about the future of Morphoses, citing fundraising obstacles and the stress of managing a dance company while also choreographing for it. These are challenges faced by many choreographers who start their own companies, except that Wheeldon was already in the spotlight and gaining plenty of publicity when he founded Morphoses because of his time as a New York City Ballet dancer and resident choreographer. For Wheeldon to abandon Morphoses after such a short amount of time would be cowardly. There are countless other struggling companies – many of which have been around for much longer than three years – that have persisted with fewer resources and smaller budgets than that of Morphoses. The company has been extremely fortunate to have performed at Sadler’s Wells, the Vail International Dance Festival, and City Center over the past three years, and there are plans to tour to several cities internationally in 2010. Performing worldwide is impressive for such a young company, but perhaps Morphoses should focus on smaller, local projects before calling it quits so that Wheeldon can devote his energies to the choreographic process.

In October 2005 when Clarks first entered India, they had grand plans. As per this press release, they planned opening about 300 stores by 2006. It does not take an in-depth study to know that this did not happen.

In the light of this failure to expand, it is heartening to note that Clarks has entered into a joint venture with Future Group, India.

Future Group is an extremely successful retail group controlling impressive retail chains like Pantaloons and Big Bazaar, shopping malls like City Center, clothing brands like John Miller, and even consumer finance and insurance under Future Money.

The JV plan seems to be to roll out the brand in 2011. So there is still a wait before the shoes are available more easily in the country. They plan to make it a premier international footwear label. From the press release it seems like the design range will increase, and more ladies sandals will be available. Also, the manufacturing might be outsourced to some local names.

“There are some excellent manufacturers in India making this product and we are excited about working with them”

-Andrew Martland, Head International BD, Clarks

However, I just hope that the original designs remain along with new ones, and the strict quality specifications and customer care practice of the footwear company dont change much when launched by the Indian-UK JV.

“We believe that in this economic climate this price reduction is an appropriate step to take on behalf of our buyers so as to provide them greater flexibility in closing on their residences,” said Bobby Baldwin, president and CEO of City Center.”

Now come on Bobby. Just admit you’re losing purchasers right and left and you have to lower your prices and beg on your hands and knees [and say pretty please] to get anyone to close on a deal at this point. But will it work? IDK I’m no mathematician but if I’ve signed a contract to purchase for $1 million, now my price will be lowered to $700k but………according to Case-Shiller prices in dazzling Las Vegas have dropped a whopping 55% [remember they're knocking off only 30%] so why would anyone in their right mind take the bait and close underwater?

Maye the ultra rich are confident that home prices have bottomed. Case-Shiller says they are in the “process” of bottoming but hey, if you’re rich, what’s a few hundred thousand between friends, right? Chump change. My take? [waving my hand here] Cough up my earnest money Bobby. Your firm couldn’t close within the specified timeframe according to the terms of our agreement. I’m not buying underwater. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck……….I’ll just wait a year and buy a unit cheap – once the foreclosures kick in.

Every time i, start to write a new post i feel like starting it with my current status that, am idle

Every time i, start to write a new post i feel like starting it with my current status that, am idle not exactly, because am at least committed to some 6 hrs of work per day. But to call it a monotony, it is perfect i think. It’s true “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” – so here i decided that i needed a break !! Ofcourse, i have some fun in my own town but again not a great deal. Since 5 yrs i joined my course its only fun, fun, fun, idle, idle, idle and some work(very little). So am mentally alien to this concept of work and that too only work and no entertainment. My town you can count the spots or hangouts just in fingers. Same place, same street and same relatives’ houses only becomes a routine. So i decided to make one day trip to Chennai. I also had another reason, quite important too. I have to collect my 9th and 10th semester mark sheet, provisional certificate and transfer certificate. Next day morning by 7:30, am crossing Pondicherry city limit. Not just in five minutes i got remained that i have forgotten my no dues certificate for applying TC . I thought getting down from the bus is not a good idea so my travel continued. By 10.30 am i reached my college, started to walk towards my department. The best thing is, i just felt am returning to my college after spending a weekend in home. But, it’s not the truth, it’s no more my place. I said, it’s ok! I reached my department met some of my juniors and non- teaching staff, conveyed my regards and exchanged greetings etc., To my great surprise not less in 15 minutes i got my mark sheets and provisional certificate. Because, usually it will take some 15 times of 15 minutes for some work like that.

I had an appointment with one of my dearest seniors. We planned for a movie, lunch and shopping. I wanted to go to city center for the movie at 11.50 am and am still in college till 11.15. I was quite confused about the bus stops as in which side i should take 21G. I chose one and that was my wrong choice. Again i walked back and stood in the correct stop. While crossing i saw some 3 21G going. i kicked myself and felt i have stay a long time for another 21G. But, things worked for me a 21G came and i didn’t mind the rush and tried to make my way in the floating crowd. About Chennai the most common and prominent thing you can see everywhere is “crowd”. Now i got some trouble i didn’t have any loose change for the bus. I had only 50s, 100s and 500s. i thought the conductor will ask me to get down at the next stop . But this time as well the fortune worked for me, I got my 8 rupees ticket and Rs.42 as balance. Somehow i reached city center and was waiting nearly 45 minutes for my senior. She had some problem in her way to city center i think it’s nothing other than the traffic- the spoiler of good things door keepers smiled at us because we are entering the movie hall after 1 hr 15 mins.

Once the movie was over we went to have our lunch in KFC. After lunch i did a good shopping with my senior in Landmark and lifestyle, a satisfied shopping i would say with the cookies i bought to end the shopping. By the time i stepped out of City Center it is 7 pm. I got an auto from city center to vadapalani it took 45 minutes to reach vadapalani. I managed myself to board a bus ECR Pondy( My favourite route ). I knew it will be heavily loaded with passengers in a couple of stops. In Guindy the standing population was equal to sitting population. And when it reached Thiruvanmyur the standing population was more than sitting population. Bad time started for me when people tried to use me as one of the resting poles in the bus. I was dog tired after my full action packed day. I wanted to close my eyes to have some sleep. But i felt to close my whole body with a door to prevent people pulling and pushing. You can’t show your inconvenience in such case because its the condition where everybody is struggling for a small space to rest their feet. The day was becoming unfortunate, the way was blocked for some half an hour to clear traffic and to pave way for the CM who is returning to Chennai from Pondicherry. When i neared Pondy the standing population was less than sitting population so i could feel some fresh air. It was 11.15 pm when i stepped out of the bus. I could neither stretch my legs or hands i felt they were tightly clasped with the joints. I thought hereafter one day trip to Chennai is the worst idea i would think about. I call it a disaster with not much damage

The sixth annual Fall for Dance festival, where all seats are just ten dollars, kicked off this past week at City Center. Not surprisingly, the opening program, performed on Tuesday and Wednesday, included easily digestible crowd-pleasers that bring audiences to their feet and (hopefully) persuade them to attend dance performances more than once per year. But the evening also offered an inspirational work by Israel’s Ohad Naharin and a history lesson: This year’s festival honors the centennial of the Ballets Russes and is presenting recreations and reinterpretations of some of the company’s original works.

One of these works was Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun, as performed by Boston Ballet. When this landmark work premiered in Paris in 1912, it caused a controversy and shocked audiences due to its erotic undertones, sexually explicit themes, and the final masturbatory gesture. The original program notes summarize the simple plot: “A faun dozes; nymphs tease him; a forgotten scarf satisfies his dream. The curtain descends so that the poem can begin in everyone’s memory.” Moving with the two-dimensionality that Nijinsky drew from Greek and Egyptian reliefs and vase paintings, Altankhuyag Dugaraa shifted between boyish flirtation and an animal-like prowl as he pursued the nymphs. His brief encounter with Lorna Feijoo, during which they barely touched, lacked nuance even though it was filled with erotic tension. In 2009 the piece seems remarkably tame, but Faun was considered revolutionary and is now viewed as one of the first modern ballets. It certainly deserved to be included in the festival, but on Wednesday evening, it didn’t provide the rousing effect that one expects from a festival’s opening piece.

Paul Taylor Dance Company has appeared in the festival every year, and this time they performed a silly, often irritating work from their repertoire, Taylor’s Offenbach Overtures (1995). Blending theatrics and clumsiness, the cast of fourteen dancers mocked French manners and stuffy classical ballet. Laura Halzack and Orion Duckstein continually switched roles during their pas de deux, frequently leaving one of them hanging precariously in suspense while the other indulged in a solo. In another section that involved a duel between Michael Trusnovec and Sean Mahoney, mutual respect and adoration quickly replaced their machismo attitudes. Each section of the work is far too long to sustain interest, but this flashy, balletic spoof won the crowd over, and it certainly was an effective advertisement for Taylor’s three-week engagement at City Center this February.

The other standing ovation of the evening went to tap sensation Savion Glover and the OtherRz in The StaRz and StRiPes 4EvEr for NoW. One by one, the four musicians emerged from the wings, with each adding another layer to the John Coltrane-inspired jazzy sounds. The instrument that was center stage, however, was Glover, whose tapping seemed to take on a life of its own. While conducting and interacting with the musicians (his back was to the audience for the majority of the piece), Glover explored the rhythms and intricacies of the music to phenomenal effect. He was briefly joined by two other tappers, Marshall Davis Jr. and Cartier Williams, and their trio and solos showed innovation and a wonderful sense of musicality. It was delightful to see the tappers and musicians in such good spirits, clearly thrilled to be at the festival and engaging with one another throughout their performance.

Without a doubt, the most challenging – and thrilling – piece on the program came from Batsheva Dance Company. Choreographer Ohad Naharin’s B/olero is a richly textured duet for two women. To the unique sound of Isao Tomita’s synthesized version of Ravel’s well-known “Bolero”, Iyar Elezra and Bobbi Smith shifted between unison movements and phrases in which they echoed or fed off of one another. Soft, fluid torsos and moments of calm abruptly changed to aggressive, full-bodied attacks that ate up the space. The women were effortless as their articulate bodies transitioned between restraint and release. Although they remained deadpan throughout the work, the emotion embedded in their movement bubbled to the surface, eventually overflowing and captivating the audience along with the increasingly physical, interactive choreography. The catalyst for B/olero might have been unclear, but upon being swept up into this riveting work, it was impossible not to feel ecstatic. If only every Fall for Dance performance could be so inexplicably, wonderfully transformational.

City Center is having a nighttime event in the walkway between 55th and 56th Street. These parasols up on the ceiling look great; they are simple and colorful. If you open a parasol indoors, it’s not bad luck, is it?

I was most surprised by the use of Tomita’s version of Ravel’s Bolero for the Batsheva piece. I had his records when I was a kid from the RCA one penny for twelve Lps offer. I thought it was cool to have a Japanese electronic music composer. It was much later that I realized how campy & new age he sounded. Still I believe he predated Windham Hill music so now I will consider him cool again and look for some place to down load his music. If you wish to do the same my favorite albums as a kid were “Snowflakes are Dancing” 1974 and “Firebird Suite” 1975. I am behind in my posts but I really enjoyed Savion and Paul Taylor as well. I have seen better versions of “Afternoon of a Faun” though.
