Hi All,

Yeah nah the title doesn`t have the same ring to it like Fedde Le Grands song but it got played a few times today on my travels north, sounds fully sick mate, so much bass pumpin out my subs! Dad wants me to grow up but that`s not going to happen! Anyway I shot this on Christmas day early in the afternoon, was so stoked the fountain was working and no one was around, would have preferred a little less cloud behind the city but it was just good to get out shooting. I am staying in Geraldton for the night with friends, which has been good as the kids are still over the moon about Christmas, it was good seeing all the presents they got and being able to hijack their quadbike as I am the bigger kid!  But also seeing the pictures on the fridge with santa, the tree and a bin full of wrapping paper basically all the stuff (by my own choice) I missed out on this year. Unfortunately there are no waves and tomorrow is going to be about 43 deg! I was definitely amped for waves after watching my old Billabong movie collection the past few days. Anyway hope everyone enjoys their day and takes care of themselves with this warm weather.

I really liked the way the light was coming thorough the scallop boats and reflecting on the water. I did a series of these paintings and will post them over the next few days.

After another hour of meddling with this cityscape painting I think I have made significant progress. Mainly I just went over the draft colors/lines working towards a more finished product. I am also playing with the idea of having various areas of the painting being in different stages of unfinish. That is some areas will be done, some will be just sketch lines, and others somewhere in between. I think this helps to create visual depth and emphasis although I doubt it shows up much in a jpeg. Here are some shots of my progress:

First I add the middle tone, in this case grey. Second I add the dark tone and third the highlight. I do a little finishing/blending then repeat the process until I am happy with the way it looks. I’m going for a dirty, rough look so there is very little blending. I’m also trying to keep the brush stroke direction really obvious to increase the rough look.

This is a shot of the lower right hand corner. You can see some of the blending, rough layer, and brush stroke at work.

This is the center of the painting. I am quite pleased with how this is turning out as it will be the stage on which I paint the figure chasing his own heart.

And this is more or less what the painting looks like now. Sorry for the bad image quality on this one. I think though, that it is clear that some parts are more finished than others. I hope there is a nice flow between darker and lighter areas. The dirty look should be pretty clear or else I’m not doing my job right. All that remains now is more tightening up before adding the figure. I am beginning to wonder if the piece is evocative of any feeling or if the look of it conveys anything beyond a visual. I hope there is some cold, dreariness coming through. This piece will hopefully be wrapping up soon. Please stay tuned!

Almost from the beginning, the interpreters have been struggling with my name – which I thought to be pretty straightforward. So for the past two days, they have been trying to come up with a good Afghan name for me. There was Zahara, a popular Shi’ite name – and one that would have worked well with my Hazara looks, as well as Zagrab (spelled hopelessly wrong, I know), which means “beloved.” Last night, after dinner in the interpreters’ dining hall, they christened me Mina (Me-NA), which is Pashto for “love.”

And maybe it’s just me, but I believe that there’s something immensely powerful in the act of naming or renaming. For one thing, to be given a name or nickname is a sign of acceptance and belonging. But it also signifies reinvention. In every country that I’ve lived in, I’ve gone by a slightly different name. And in every country, different aspects of my personality have come out. Of course, that many be more of a product of the differences in culture than anything else.

But there’s also another reason. When I go travel or am abroad, the experience that I look for is one of maximum immersion. I want to lose myself as completely as I can in the local culture, so that I can just disappear and blend in and absorb. And a name is part of that process.

Kabul, Afghanistan.  Who wouldn’t want to lose themselves (figuratively) here?

Happy Christmas to my little sister Janine who is currently getting her master’s at Wayne State. She requested a monster attacking Detroit for the holidays, and I am more than happy to oblige her.

Architecture and cityscapes are new for me to paint. I’ve avoided doing them in fear that I didn’t have it in me since my natural inclination is primarily nature and figurative. It’s taken me several months to finish this one … was stuck on trying to make it more realistic and at daylight. Even in art, the artist must let go and allow the piece to speak. I’m glad I listened.

Street – Ponta Delgada No. 1 is a photograph from my Sao Miguel – Azores Series. Many streets in Ponta Delgada are paved in a mosaic of black and white stone. The designs around Ponta Delgada vary between geometric and organic designs. This was one of my favorites that I saw during my time in the Azores.
