After spending the weekend in London the daily routine bites harder than it usually does. Neverthele

After spending the weekend in London the daily routine bites harder than it usually does. Nevertheless the good thing is I actually don’t have to fight it back because this week I’m participating in seminars in four star hotels with three courses work (geek) lunch including a ‘free’ Brussels skyline. The only thing that makes all of this less glamorous is the fact that I caught some nasty tube germs, so I have to sniff my Vicks inhalator quite often (and we all know that doesn’t even come close to sniffing coke at Canary Wharf).

So it only takes one teenage dream in a teenage circus to realize that all that glitters is not gold. This is with the sole exception of everyone who was going through (late) puberty in 1994. Because back then busses still had a glittery name (e.g. “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”) and were good for an instant cult hit at theatres instead of nowadays’ delays.

Anyway, there’s a stage musical based on the original story of two drag queens and a transsexual on a bus trip across Australia running in London’s Palace Theatre. Let it be clear that if you prefer Oscar Wilde over Thai brides doing unspeakable things with ping-pong balls, all of this might just not be your cup of tea. Moreover everything in the stage version is overstated. Even the gags became cruder and more camp. Actually it’s all about an eye-poppingly extravagant spectacle. If this is your thing you might definitely want to check it out.

For those visiting London shortly I also recommend the Pop Life exhibition at Tate Modern. The show takes Andy Warhol’s statement that “good business is the best art” as a starting point in order to examine the ways in which the Pop art movement has built up its own brand and personae since the 1980s. In doing this it focuses not only on the fame, fortune and the links between them; but it also tries to distil a whole chapter of modern times in which a particular kind of art turned itself into pure commodity. It’s a deeply superficial show full of glitz and gloss.

At its centre stands – obviously – the figure of Andy Warhol (the dull, hyper-energetic narcissist who proclaimed that art needed to get out into the world and amongst the people – hence the quote). What more can be said than this: mainstream enough for everyone to know and eternally enough to be impossible to ignore. The revelation of the day might have been the Jeff Koons’s room. Albeit as a extremely raunchy interlude consisting of a giant plastic sculpture of Koons humping his porn bride while being surrounded by various photographic close-ups on the walls showing the latter licking and lapping at her where it counts (I’m trying to be cryptic here). Of course we were also bound to come across a few bits and pieces from Damien Hirst’s ‘Beautiful Inside My Head Forever’ spectacle of 2008: the calf in formaldehyde with gold hooves! The gem-studded butterflies! Whole rows of diamonds on shelves! Next on is a gallery entirely treated to the colorful and lovable cartoon characters (inspired by the anime and otaku lifestyle) of Takashi Muraki, trying to integrate that peculiar “Japanese-ness” into Western (art) structures.

Taking my post from last week into account and with all of the above, you should’ve booked your train seat to London by now while bearing the following in mind: “if you’ve got no kind words to say, you should say nothing at all”. Here’s your song for the week: The Maccabees – No Kind Words.

Bye-

Harvey Nichols

(by the way: WIFI gab’s for free!

Wieder etwas gelernt…

The view from my office today: watching leaves as they fall from the trees, realising that Winter is

The view from my office today: watching leaves as they fall from the trees, realising that Winter is just around the corner. I have to admit that lately, I often spend such a long time thinking about how to express myself that I forget what I wanted to write down in the first place. And since I don’t find the time anymore to write a decent blogpost I’ll keep it short this time.

This weekend I’m in London again. When I come to think of it there’s always been something about seeing the Union Jack that has conjured up all these fun scenes of swinging sixties, friendly-sounding bobbies and musicals. Okay, London was never love at first sight and even now I still don’t have those larger-than-life feelings about the city (contrary to other people). But the truth is that I really came to appreciate England’s capital more than before.

I think it’s the contrast within London that is most fascinating. It has some of the most beautiful open spaces (“London’s lungs”) and yet some of the streets in the old parts of London are so narrow that it’s almost impossible to see the sky. Moreover there’s the diversity. London has always been a city of many cultures and many faiths. Its residents reflect a wide range of national, cultural, racial and religious backgrounds (the result of a history which has included invasion and expansion). Moreover the different communities are part of the mainstream contemporary life. They not only have helped build today’s vibrant Britain, but have also contributed to its economic, social, democratic and cultural development. Again, clearly much can be learned from their experience.

Anyway. In order not to become a total bore I’ll stop here and end with a nice track I stumbled upon this week. It’s everything we love about guitars and boys. Bloc Party might not want to stay on hiatus too long with these boys around: Two Door Cinema Club – I Can Talk.

Bye-

Trolleygirls on tour again. Diesmal in good old Europe.

So, dann wollen wir also mal.
