This is the perfect time for engineers experienced in rail design to consider a new job. If you are seeking advancement and your boss is not going anywhere, switching jobs is the only way to move up. And, the best way to take a leap in salary is to go to a new company. We have a number of rail clients who are looking for degreed engineers with good jobs. Civil, structural, power traction, signal and communications are all hot fields right now. If you want to take advantage of the ARRA stimulus funds going to rail, now is the time.

Why use a recruiter? For someone with a job, this means confidentiality, resume advice and someone to communicate with potential employers during regular businsess hours. Howley Associates is working with a couple of discreet experienced recuiters experienced in serving engineers and engineering consulting firms.

I come from a family of civil engineers, growing up I was the only one in the house who read books w

I come from a family of civil engineers, growing up I was the only one in the house who read books with more words than numbers in them. Needless to say, my love for literature was viewed in much the same way one would view a family member who decides to join the Hare Krishna- they smiled at my growing stockpiles of books and waited for the day the youthful indiscretion would be outgrown naturally.

I’m happy to report they stopped waiting years ago, probably after calculating that the odds were not at all in their favor.

Remember that scene in My Cousin Vinny where Marisa Tomei explains, “My dad’s a mechanic, my uncles are mechanics, my brother’s a mechanic..,” when asked what qualified her as an expert witness on automobiles? Well, I’m neither an engineer nor a mechanic, but in some ways the love of numbers rubbed off on me. To this day a math problem remains the best way to clear my head.

It does not, however, do anything for hang-overs. For that you need massive amounts of water and aspirin.

My dad’s favorite math parlor trick for us kids goes this way:

Think of a number between 1 and 10 and keep it to yourself

In your head, multiply the number by 5

Add 50

Subtract 2

Add 273

Add 63

Subtract 48

Subtract 144

Add 56

Subtract 126

Subtract 122

And finally, divide by five

This last number is the one you picked

This enthralled us to no end until about age ten when we realized he never could say what that selected number was. At which time he sagely pointed out that we learned math is all about relationships; operations have inverse counterparts that cancel each other out. I guess that’s a lot less daunting than teaching us calculus straightaway.

I appreciate its brilliance more now as I torture my own kids with the same “magic trick”. For one thing, as long as they don’t catch on right away, the problem can grow along with them. You can have them pick a number between 1 and 100 for instance. Or do exponents and squares. As long as you can keep the numbers straight in your own head, they’ll never be the wiser.

On second thought, you might actually want them to catch on sooner rather than later. If they’ve turned 25 and are still clueless, you’ve got problems.

I thought I would share this website with you which offers you the facility to visualise via your PC your driveway and garden using different features and materials. This came about because one of my clients who are Civil Engineers are also involved in Driveways and Paths. They asked me for some help with their presentation packs to prospective clients using this site.

With this website – see below for the link – you can upload an image to recreate a driveway in different materials and colours. The site also enables you to visualise your dream garden by taking you through different features you would like in your garden. So you can see before you buy! It has been very interesting to do and hopefully it will bring my client good results.

The website is www.marshalls.co.uk Marshalls are a UK manufacturer of stone and concrete and have a register of approved and vetted installers of gardens and driveways.

The American Society of Civil Engineers has issued a damning report card on America’s infrastr

The American Society of Civil Engineers has issued a damning report card on America’s infrastructure that looks an awful lot like my high school grades - Cs and Ds. Actually, ASCE only gave out four Cs, the rest Ds in 15 categories such as rail, roads, dams, transit, aviation, energy and wastewater. Average grade was a D which would boot out any student out of college.

The truth be told, I got mostly Bs, a few Cs and maybe one D. Wouldn’t it be nice if the nation’s infrastructure did that well?

The Report Card is an indictment of the nation’s infrastructure and its overseers (that’s us…), but should come as no surprise. Once you build it, you have to maintain it. The mentality of ignoring out these vital facets of our society ties into living beyond our means and slavish worship of Wall Street fortunes no matter what the consequences. We lost sight of what was important and only now seem to be realizing it.

Anyhow, the report card says it’ll cost $2.trillion to repair over next five years. Of course, civil engineers have a huge vested interest in seeing us spend gazillions on infrastructure. But all you need to do is drive under a few crumbling highway overpasses to know the report card is pretty damned close to the truth. If my kids weren’t already chasing their dreams in college, I might try to persuade at least one of them to pursue civil engineering.
