Selfish: Alan Entwistle

Entwistle was told he was a ‘manipulative man’ and must serve at least 21-and-a-half years in prison.

‘This was a chilling murder carried out mercilessly for your own selfish and self-centred reasons,’ said judge Anthony Russell . ‘You persistently stalked her and you told a number of people you would kill her.’

The 52-year-old yesterday admitted stabbing mother of two Claire Atkinson to death in April.

But Entwistle had been charged with kidnapping her and threatening her with a knife just a month earlier, Preston Crown Court heard.

The terrified shop worker told police her former partner of four years had vowed to kill her, telling her: ‘If I cannot have you then no one else can.’

Entwistle was remanded in custody by magistrates but released on bail five days later after an application to a crown court judge.

The ex-bouncer later coaxed the 31-year-old into his car as she walked home from work and stabbed her 13 times in the heart and chest.

Entwistle, of Fleetwood, Lancashire, then crashed in an apparent suicide bid in Thornton Cleveleys.

After the sentencing, Det Insp Phil Burke denied police had made any mistakes following the decision to release Entwistle on bail.

‘Our role is to gather evidence to put before the courts. We did nothing wrong at all. The court considers the facts and then make the decisions. It is not for me to comment whether that was right or wrong,’ he added.

Alan Entwistle, is accused of killing Claire Atkinson, 31, who died after suffering multiple wounds to the chest prior to a road crash in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire, on April 17.

Entwistle, of Custom House, Lane, Fleetwood, appeared in the dock at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

He spoke to confirm his personal details and that he understood the charge brought against him.

Magistrates remanded him in custody until May 7 when he will attend Preston Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.

No application for bail was made.

Entwistle, a former partner of Miss Atkinson, was arrested at the scene of the incident after the Hyundai vehicle hit a Land Rover Discovery.

Police were called by paramedics and it was established that her injuries were not caused by the impact of the collision.

Following her death, Miss Atkinson’s parents Grenville, 55, and Kath, 52, said they were “completely devastated” at the loss of their “precious and beautiful daughter”.

They said she loved her life with her sons, Harvey, nine, and Euan, seven.

Miss Atkinson had been stabbed in the chest several times before the car crash took place and the driver of the Hyundai was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Lancashire Police issued a tribute to Miss Atkinson from her parents Kath, 52, and Grenville, 55, brother Paul, 27, and his fiancee Sarah, also 28.

It said: “We are completely devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of our precious and beautiful daughter and sister.

“Claire was very outgoing with a bubbly and lively character and had a sparkling personality.”

The family said Claire loved her life with her sons, Harvey, nine and Euan, seven.

They added: “They have had their caring and loving mum, who they loved deeply and adored spending time with, taken from them at such a young age.

“There are large numbers of family and friends affected by this loss and we are still trying to come to terms with what has happened.”

The driver, a 52-year-old man who is thought to be Miss Atkinson’s former partner, remains under arrest at Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital after suffering minor injuries from the collision.

The driver of the Hyundai, believed to be Ms Atkinson’s former partner Alan Entwistle, 52, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Lancashire Police said he remained at Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital after suffering minor injuries from the collision. Once passed fit by medics, he will be questioned by officers.

A Home Office post-mortem examination has confirmed the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Detective Chief Inspector Dermott Horrigan, of Lancashire’s Major Investigation Team, said: “I would appeal for anybody who witnessed the crash to contact us.

“It is also important that we establish exactly what happened prior to the collision and I need to build up a picture of Claire’s last movements.

“This is obviously a very difficult time for her family and we have officers supporting them.”

Police are keen to hear from anyone who saw the blue Hyundai Getz, registration number EX05 CWA, in the area around Fleetwood Road North shortly before the collision at 1.10pm on Friday.

Two people who were in the Land Rover suffered minor whiplash injuries.
