The "borders" of Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland

Culture and ethnicity are linked. Modernist, Ernest Gellner in “Nations and Nationalism” state that blood, language, and historical ties are not important. Rather, the idea that we want to live together is more relevant. I have to advocate Gellner’s modernist view. I agree that people must want to live together; otherwise the struggle for new lines to be drawn or for independence resurrects itself. Take a look at Somaliland where clans formed a “nation,” Gellner is essential to nationalism and his literature is the bible of the modernist This self declared republic has few discernable cultural, ethnic, linguistic or religious differences, the usual markers hiving one group off from another, between those wishing to secede and those in the state of being divorced.

Historically, the clan system enabled Somali people to form their own independent governing structures or even their own traditional states. Historical or traditional polities are outcomes of highly complex co-evolution of clan systems, social norms and pastoral society. This evolutionary process however must have been unequal in the areas inhabited by Somali people. For instance, recorded evidence that some areas in Somalia had a very advanced governing structures (Sultanates / Kingdoms in Obbio, Hafun, Taleeh, Hadaftimo and  Hargeisa) while other areas remained less developed or under Arab Sultanates. (Some of these are mentioned in Luigi Bricchetti Robecchi’s Journeys in the Somali Country1890-91 ). Today however, there is empirical evidence of similar patterns of emergence of traditional polities in the nation that was Somali Democratic Republic. (Puntland and Somaliland).

The emergence of alternative polities in Puntland and Somaliland after the collapse of Somalia is very important to understand. Both Puntland and Somaliland constitute the re-emergence of traditional independent (or quasi independent states) in contemporary Somalia. This does not mean that I particularly support or justify the legitimacy of any but a mere practical truth on the ground one that must be understood for what it is and even used to foster stability in  southern Somalia.

Today’s regional authorities or regional polities are based on collective conventions and pacts achieved through clan systems. They also offer diverse and alternative institutional arrangements to cope with the failure of the former Somali Democratic Republic.

However to make use of any diversity of institutions, I attempted to dissect, understand analyze and attempt to replicate the process that leads groups to organize and eventual formation of regional polities.

It is equally important to acknowledge that these two northern states came to being and continue to exist practically with no support from the international community. (This is particularly true in case of Puntland). On the other hand,   the international community, (primarily the UN) spent an enormous effort and material in constituting a central government for the entire country that was Somalia. Many of these attempts failed and the last attempt to constitute a central authority for Somalia is on life support.

Puntland and Somaliland, for instance, employed diverse institutional arrangements, that included civic organizations, former security forces, intellectuals, extensive of clan based discussions (led by traditional clan elders) to form a collective pact to govern their affairs. This created Puntland in 1998 and Somaliland earlier in 1992.

Though not conclusive, there is compelling evidence that it is highly likely that today’s Puntland (and to some extent Somaliland) are historical outcomes or contingencies of the local traditions to self-governance that predate modern day Somalia.

Today’s Puntland for instance is made of several traditional sultanates that existed in the area prior to the colonial era. It is this long tradition of self reliance and local administration that enabled these regions to constitute functional authorities. It certainly is not random chance that the both Puntland and Somaliland have emerged while many other peaceful remained trapped and eventually consumed by the Somali Civil War.

As in the pre-colonial era, the success of clan sanctioned agreements have become empirical reality and a solid ground that can ascertain a respected representative authority; indeed clan sanctioned agreements are empirically grounded accomplishments that endogenously bring people together – just as it were in the pre-colonial era but perhaps with a modern twist of quasi-state entity.  Both Somaliland and Puntland are exemplary empirical evidence of how an authority is distributed to sub-clans through a bottom up functional organs nominated by the clan orders or projected by them.

Political rivalries have never been too bitter for me until that Monday evening news.

The convoy to file Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu’s gubernatorial candidacy in Maguindanao was stopped by armed men believed to be from the rival Ampatuan clan. According to reports, these armed men abducted and massacred members of the convoy that could be believed as the worst political killing in the country’s history.

Among those who were killed were journalists and Mangudadatu’s wife and two lawyers and journalists. As of today, the death toll has reached 57 people.

Maguindanao has been a center of intrigues on poll-related issues. During the 2004 elections, issues that Pres. Gloria Arroyo cheated stemmed from the region as she questionably won over seven municipalities on a big gap against the late Fernando Poe, Jr. Incidentally, the ruling Ampatuan family previously promised the president a landslide win over the territory.

Another issue that has regained much attention is the proliferation of paramilitary groups serving political clans and dynasties in the South. Political platforms were just a piece of the competition, the rest relies on the “guns” factor these politicians hold.

The president is therefore dared to take action against the alleged suspects who are one of her staunch allies. How will she deal with it? After all, these were the people who helped her covet her position today.  On the side of the police, how do they deal and answer the onslaught of criticisms that they were allegedly involved in the death of innocent people?

Will there be someone to take advantage of this crisis and step up to oppose the two feuding political families? There can be a number of scenarios that can unfold, but the main goal is to give justice to those who were killed.

Also, as a consequence of the Maguindanao massacre, the country has again proven itself to be a dangerous ground for journalists to practice their profession. Despite the provision in the 1987 Constitution that guarantees the freedom of the press, can journalists really gather news freely when threats to their lives increase?

As what I have learned early on in my journalism education, in a democracy, the press acts as the 4th estate that checks up on the government. But how can these people check on the people involve if they are persecuted and reined by the people they are suppose to guard?

No news is worth a journalist’s life. True enough, but the quest to uncover truth and new information cannot hinder a good journalist to keep pursuing it.  Ironically,  the Maguindanao massacre was not even an event where these journalists are to report anomalies linked to politicians. Journalists, who were part of the convoy, are there to cover the filing of Esmael Mangudadatu’s Certificate of Candidacy.

As we move to modernize our elections, this barbaric act takes us back to days of the savages. May this incident do not only mark our history but may it give lessons to all of us. These politically-driven inhumane acts should be stopped. Let the battles on gaining government positions be left on platforms and ballots, not on guns and display of wealth and power.   May justice be served to those who were killed by this senseless feud.

A long time ago sometime in the 2007 era of Robloxia many people band together for common purposes and these were called clans. By 2008 there were 2 major clans called Swarm and Elite Wing. These two clans fought in a war for control of Robloxia. This war was called Pre-Rowar I. While fighting a new clan appeared called Orglock appeared. Once they started fighting Pre-Rowar I ended and Rowar I began. Orglock made a temporary alliance with Elite wing and together they won the war. The outcome was this Orglock grew in massive numbers and became Orglock Emirpe and Swarm collapsed. Elite wing also assumed dominance for awhile. Orglocks felt that as a sting on their pride and warred with the Elite wing in Orglockian War. The war ended when Elite wing and Orglock empire became allies and peace sanctioned for awhile. Many old Swarm members banded together and became a clan called 101st. Meanwhile another clan appeared called Ninja clan declared war on Elite Wing. After several major battles Ninja clan began to crumble and eventually fade and they began a small guerilla warfare group called Elite tigers. Orglockians began trade tech with the Elite Wing. Many Orglockians didnt like this and unrest began in the Orglock empire. Soon many Orglockians seceded from Orglock empire and became Umbrella corp. Umbrella corp declared war on Elite wing which began the Umbrella-Aerial war. Meanwhile Elite tigers fell after their own unrest became Star Republic and began trying to build a powerful airforce. Umbrella-Aerial war ended and they became mutual allies. 101st then split in half after its co-leader Lordnathan seceded from them and took half the clan with him and created the x-101st. X-101st crushed 101st smoothly and swiftly in 101st civil war. X-101st grew in great number and Umbrella corp broke peace with the Elite wing and became allies with X-101st in fear of war. By the end of 2008 going into 2009 Elite wing slowly began to fall because of X-101st hired attacks on them, Decaying of their most powerful allies and a long cold war with a small clan called Elite ninja snipers which zapped their resources. The Star Republics was abolished after members surrendered to x-101st in fear of attack. A x-101st member named Caleb10909 seceded from x-101st and took half of its members with him and formed Robloxian Elite Forces or REF. REF declared war on x-101st and started the First X-101st cvil war. Also Elite ninja snipers collapsed and became Scarlet warriors. During the first x-101st civil war many smaller clans appeared and joined either side. Eventually the first x-101st civil war ended and peace began between REF and x-101st. This peace lead to the crumble of the Camo Ninja Clan by Scarlet warriors after the Camo Ninja Clan had tried to resurrect Ninja clan. The collapse of Bloody Wing Organization which had been created to destroy Elite wing this collapse lead to the creation of Hedgie Corp and M.O.R who warred with each other until they made peace. Another collapse happened after the clan EMG which had been made to destroy x-101st was re-organized and made Phoenix Corps. Peace between REF broke after large amounts of riots and several conflicts with smaller clans. The Second X-101st civil war began. Another clan called United Soldiers appeared to destroy R.E.F but they did it through small skirmishes. A clan called R.A.F appeared who was a ancient enemy of Scarlet Warriors began to declare war on R.E.F. They made an alliance with x-101st and all ell broke loose. R.E.F bashed and battered R.A.F badly which lead to Kinglime’s succession from R.A.F and taken several members with him and with many others created United Clan of Roblox or UCR. UCR gained huge power and made an alliance with M.O.R which broke after UCR assault on MOR headquarters. MOR and Scarlet Warriors and United Soldiers declared war UCR and fought them at thier Skyship beta which ruined their trading capability and at their underwater base. Meanwhile Hedgie Corp and Phoenix Corp fought x-101st at their recruitment center. Many people fearing destruction banned together and formed X-501st to counter act x-101st actions. Finally the Second X-101st civil war ended and Rowar III began when UCR and REF broke their treaty. Rowar III lead to Phoenix Corp peace with x-101st and x-501st begining major bashing along R.E.F at their recruitment center. Eventually under a treaty and a small skirmish Kinglime was removed from power over UCR and Benblue10 became their king. Rowar III was finished and a new war between the new crumbling UCR and X-101st began. This war was called X war. X war lasted only for 2 months and at its end Benblue10 lost power as king and THPG was made the king of UCR which was only half of what it used to be because many members seceded and made smaller clans. X-101st, R.E.F and UCR made peace with each and joined a peace clan called Robloxian Coalition. While peace existed Elite Wing began to try and recover its self and Phoenix Corps grew to great power and was recognized as a super power by 12 clans. Also a new clan called Deathwish lead by Ultimatehobo appeared and became the 5th most powerful clan in robloxia. Ultimatehobo faced a major problem because he had angered 4 different clans and was fight in the war none as Rowar IV. This war started like this. Deathwish insulted Hedgie corp so war started between them and Hedgie Corps ally MOR eventually Hedgie corps other ally Scarlet warriors joined in along with Phoenix corp who seeked to crush them. Eventually UCR learned of this and seceded from Robloxian Coalition as well as X-101st and sides began to strike up and Rowar IV began. Although the secret treaty of recruitment was made after THPG left UCR and Dboot98 took power of UCR. The treaty was made between Lordnathan and Dboot98 so that they simply fought for money. Meanwhile X-501st began to seize control of the forums.

I have undertaken this little piece of research to know more about the place I hail from. I have presented below the little information I could gather about my roots.

The Story of Serangolam

The People of Serangolam are linked with the towns of Karappangadu and Selperi. Once upon a time, 7 devoted Sri Vaishnavas from Kooram and Kidambi set-off on a pilgrimage. On one nightfall, they stopped at the place now known as Karappangadu. That night, they had a dream – in which the Lord directed them to an anthill (marked by a flying Garuda) in which they were to find a deity. The Lord directed the Sri Vaishnavas to build a temple and chant the Divya Prabhandam for HIM. Thus, the town of Karappangadu was formed.

As days went by, the families from Karappangadu settled in the near-by areas. They got settled in Peravurani, Nammankurichi, Idaikadu, and Serangolam – came to be called “The Pancha Gramams” along with Karappangadu.

So in Serangolam, there are Iyengars from Kooram, Kidambi, Karappangadu and Selperi. Serangolam nicely unites the people of different origins.

I know you hate them. Well most of you do. But the concept I never got is WHY? Sure there have been rumors that Lordnathan online dates, But what if the rumors are fake. They DID spawn-kill until Nathan redid the whole group just to make you haters out there stop. Apparently, that wasnt enough. You want him gone for rumors and stuff his memebers did not him? That is some weak sauce. It POSSIBLY could be that your jealous. I highly doubt that though… Anyways just knock it off ok? You can hate him but dont say it to everyone and complain and complain.. I am a PC gamer. I am a huge fan of COD4, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I think it’s the best FPS PC game ever released and its sales figures back up that claim. As with all games of this genre, while the single player experience is fun, the multiplayer mode is why you buy the game and what gives the game its replay value. In this regard, COD4 is awesome, absolutely without peer, IMO.

So, as you might imagine, ever since they announced a release date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, I have been waiting in eager anticipation. Now, imagine my surprise when it turns out that Activision/Infinity Ward, in MW2, has stripped out all the multiplayer features that made COD4 such a success. Not only is this a major multiplayer experience downgrade (which they’re charging $10 more for), but it seems that this was done deliberately, as a slap in the face to the PC gaming community!

Modern Warfare 2: The Battleground for PC Gaming?

Every once in a while (every 10 minutes or so), the death knell of PC gaming is cried out by someone or other. And once in a while, it seems like they might be right. PC gaming is not, however, going anywhere. With such an open platform that allows anyone to get in without buying a dev kit, there will always be something to play. Nonetheless, the release of Modern Warfare 2, to me, signals one of the loudest shots fired from the bow of a major publisher against PC gaming.

Freelancer Mitch Dyer commented on his twitter feed earlier today that he was ranked one million something in Modern Warfare, meaning that in just 12 hours, the game has sold over a million copies on one platform. Any doubt that this game would be huge should be a distant memory by now.

The two console versions are pretty much feature-identical, as far as I know. It comes down to preferences for controllers and online service. Beside that, they’re the same game.

But then there’s the PC version.

The thing about PC gamers is, they expect certain things out of their games, things that have always been there as far back as Quake. First and foremost is the exclusion of support for dedicated servers. Back in the Quake II days, I remember logging into the same server (Nostromo) every night over the summer to play deathmatch over dial-up. On the 360 and PS3, matchmaking is an accepted part of the platform.

To not have that, as little an inconvenience as it may be in reality, seems like a major affront to PC gamers. Having the option to get familiar with a server and the group that shows up there has always been one of the benefits of the game, along with having the option to vote users off the server if they’re being disruptive without having to wait for an admin to get to it. Also, when the game isn’t hosted by a player, no one gets the home field advantage and no one affects the game when they pull the plug mid-match.

Of course on the publisher side, you get problems like servers with weird settings that encourage cheating and most importantly, servers that don’t verify that your copy of the game is legal. That’s the big thing. By having the entire online game run through a service, you force all your users to verify their copies of the game if they want to play online. Even if it means no clan home servers and worse, no local play.

Another missing aspect is the lack of console access. The best way to describe a PC gamer, to me, is to compare them to those car nuts that build hot rods from scratch. PC gamers build their systems, know the specs of every part in their computer, and have everything set-up just the way they like. Check out their World of Warcraft interfaces when they get to higher levels, and you’ll see something that barely looks like the same game. Similarly, some gamers like to have their shooters set-up just-so. Tweaking the field of view settings and sensitivity of the controls are things gamers expect to have the option to do as necessary. Instead, Infinity Ward has told gamers that they’d like them to play the game as they designed it, regardless of any user preferences that may not conform to what the publisher thinks is important.

Other limitations include restricting the maps to 9v9 (when the first Modern Warfare allowed games with 16v16) and the exclusion of the lean move, in the name of not having to recalibrate the maps. That lower team limit is a major thing for all the clans that formed on Modern Warfare servers trying to make the jump to the sequel. Split the team up? Have Alpha and Bravo teams? Not play the new one?

I won’t even mention that the PC version of the game is selling for the same price—$59.99—as the console equivalents. Oops, I just mentioned it.

All this together makes me think Infinity Ward/Activision is excluding expected features in hopes of discouraging PC users. Maybe not discouraging them, but taking away many of the advantages that have drawn PC users in the past while doing as much as possible to combat piracy. Of course, where there’s a will there’s a way, and there’s always a will in PC gaming, and I won’t be surprised if we see dedicated servers with 16v16 games within a few months.

Whether the mad geniuses of the mod world come up with a solution, Activision’s decision strikes me as a very clear message that PC games—or at least hardcore PC gamers—do not play a large role in their equation. While indie gaming and MMORPGs thrive, I have a feeling that some of the bigger publishers are going to give the PC less and less attention when they have a much more reliable option available.

Needless to say, I’m extremely dissapointed and conflicted by this fiasco. I was really looking forward to playing this game but, on the other hand, on principle, I don’t want to financially reward Activision/Infinity Ward for their blatantly arrogant and hostile treatment of loyal PC gamers. They expect us to pay more for an inferior product after we’ve already seen that they’re capable of putting out an excellent multiplayer game like COD4. It sucks.

So this post, is about Online Gaming, something that I have only in the past year become au fait with after years of avoiding it as one has avoided books by Jeffrey Archer and TV programs with Ross Kemp in them. But now that I have joined this burgeoning community I am finding myself increasingly enamoured with it, despite the numbers of twelve year old Americans who think they’re god’s gift to gaming, and that this gives them the right to thoroughly annoy everyone else on the server who doesn’t like listening to some two-bit American half-pint mouthing off about everything to all who’ll listen. Which is no-one usually. I get the feeling that most player mute their headsets when someone like this comes on-line. And their mikes, unless it’s to reprimand them for *insert discrimination type here* remarks. Not that this seems to put the players off. Most of them are quite content playing without listening to the inane jabberings of unfortunate Americans.

For the majority of the gaming community, the ability to play on-line is one that is taken joyfully and it is only the minority of players who insist on spoiling it for everyone else, as always. They’ve even got their own name now, ‘griefers’, famed now among the online community as perhaps one of the most hated groups, like Clans that are dedicated to the irritation and harassment of other players. Most people work their way past these groups and although they are despised generally, there seems to be a never ending flow of them on the servers of cyberspace. Empowerment eh?

So, most use this either as a method of having fun or socialising, either with friends or with new and fresh people from all over the world. Many join/form their own ‘Clans’, groups that gather to game together (The DarkShield Clan is one such group), and generally have a good time, driving/shooting/puzzling/platforming their way through the on-line world. For these people, and I count myself as one of their number, there is nothing better than sitting down and gaming with others, although they may not even be in the same country. Ah, the miracles of the modern world. Making the world smaller and more digitized.

So, is online gaming the future of the medium? Well, certainly many analysts would have us believe this to be true, and with the ever burgeoning popularity of MMORPG’s and the like, certainly the figures would also seem to show similar things. World of Warcraft, the most popular MMORPG has now got over 11.5 million subscribers, more than the entire population of countries such as Belgium and Greece, so the future of this game certainly seems fairly secure. As to whether the future of gaming lies in online games, who knows, but there will always be a hardcore who resist the change, perhaps you’re one of them, but for heavens sake give them a go. I didn’t think I’d like it, but did. A whole damn lot, and now my Live Subscription has run out, I feel surprisingly bereft. I miss those game times online, I miss playing with my friends (not in that way), I miss playing Germans, Australians and Jamaicans, hell I even miss the American castrati. Well. Maybe not so much them.

The power of the Gay lobby cannot be discounted, the Anglo Saxon world is the main warmongering entity on this planet. Our Prime Ministers and President can rarely go a week without paying homage to Homosexuality. And yet upon examination it is most rampant in oppressive environments. The virtual slave labour of Apartheid South African mines and factories and prisons are two examples. Is our form of Capitalism oppressive?

In Pakistan we are only targeting the Tribal areas. In any of the cities where we perpetuate hostility, whether it is Hebron (Khalil) in the West Bank or Fallujah in Iraq. There are a myriad of clans, some large and some small.

And so by punishing them all and stampeding them this way and that, and polluting them so that they have birth deformities (and here, and here). Our rulers can hope to end up with a diverse, transient and consumer orientated population, devoid of cohesion.

Just as the Mllitary have a military police, So the Jews have a Jewish police. Jews are taught and understand that their race is genetically passed on through the Mother. Yet we have a race of Jews more diverse than any other race on earth. And this race is constantly inculcated with otherness, that it is different and separate from humanity. It is this irony of actually representing a multitude of races that forces a false identity of aloofness.

And along with a false identity comes an indulgence in everything that is devious and false, from fiat money to transsexuals.

Could anyone possibly save the Jews from this modern incarnation of Judaica, from being faceless profiteers, from being war criminals and all the scurrilous activities required in being a Tax Man who has no fingerprints.

Like can dislike like. I see more similarities between Iran and Israel, than dissimilarities.

Are our most powerful people members of clans?

Do they wish to dominate or extinguish all other clans?

The Warlords is an action epic set during an endless war in 19th century China. Jet Li opens the movie as a disgraced General Pang, who was betrayed and only survived a massacre of his troops by the cowardly act of playing dead. He forms a bond with 2 other soldiers and joins forces to protect the interests of their village clans and help bring about a lasting peace. The story tells a tale of three sworn blood brothers.

Overall, The Warlords show a more ruthless side of Jet Li as he plays his role well while Andy Lau plays a tragic hero torn between different factions. This epic movie does not only stresses on war alone but speaks much about life as well.The humanity of man is clearly depicted in this film. Although not referenced directly, there is alot of true history in Warlords, that from 1850 to 1864, 20 to 30 million Chinese lost their lives due to warfare and starvation as a direct result of a rebellion against the Qing Dynasty. The despair and suffering felt by millions during this period is represented in the film, although no where near as worse as reality was.

The Warlords gradually builds up until the final, fittingly dramatic scene where resolution is achieved. As for the battle scenes, it may well be the bloodiest I’ve seen so far in Hong Kong cinema. Limbs are severed and there are a few gruesome beheadings. The sequences still have the martial arts influence, but no hints of wires are shown.

It’s incredible to watch the thought process of making vital decisions during a battle or within their own army to defy humanity for the greater good. Jet Li has been featured quite a bit on this site but this is one of his better movies. The cinematography is outstanding, the budget is huge, the directing brilliant and the war scenes brutal as can be. I really think it’s a film that shouldn’t be missed by anyone and you should definitely track it down, if you can.
