Our next installment of Gully Video takes a look at another NY rapper, Clap Cognac.  The name says it all.  This is an MC with class, big with the ladies, a paper chaser and a rhymesmith extraordinaire.  I don’t know what it is about NY MCs but they seem to make videos with the biggest budgets and even big name casts.  Clap is no slouch as he features Hoodie Guy, random Ghetto Hoe, fake newswoman, latino gangsta and many many more.  Commentary after the jump.

Tony: Ok, so what exactly is “Clap Cognac”?  Name makes very little sense.

Wallace: It’s really very clear to me Anthony.  ”Cognac” is the drink of choice when reeling in the ladies and after they are good and drunk “Clap” is what you leave them with to remember you by.

Tony: Whatever he or it is, he thinks that the best way to impress people is to shoot a music video using a Sidekick 2.

Wallace: As we’ve seen before you don’t want to blow your budget on high tech video equipment.  The key to a true Gully Video is that classic choppy and grainy look.  Besides they had to rent the Chrysler 300 for the shoot so that you know Clap is a true gangsta.

Tony: He rolls up aggressive in that 300 too.  Oh wait, its got a Dodge logo on the hood.  Looks like he wanted to show off his grind game by riding in the back seat of his friend’s  2006 Dodge Magnum.  

Wallace: Damn, that’s what happens when your too busy watching the scenery in this fantastically shot video that you glaze over the details.  The Magnum is a few steps below a 300 if you ask me.  Like the difference between a Don and a soldier.  Maybe Clap is still working on making it to that next level, a Coupe DeVille.

Tony: Anyway, Clap clearly shows how good he is “on his grind”, jumping the gun and nearly starting his verse too early (0:20).

Wallace: He’s too hot for that beat Tony.  Only an amateur waits to come in on time.  When you’re spitting hot fire you have to get it out before you burn up.

Tony: Hey, thats the “Lighters in the Air” beat.  Way to jack the beat and then just suck on it.  

Wallace: See, the beat saves it for me.  Otherwise I’d be slicing my ears off right now.  But the beat at least gives me something somewhat nice to listen to.  Kind of like white noise.

Tony: So I think Clap Cognac is the main guy in the brown ensemble, but theres so many guys, and the artists name is so ambiguous that the group is possible.

Wallace: Clap is the guy in the brown jacket with the bird on it.  I just get fixated with that bird.  What kind of bird is it?

Tony: It’s like a stork and a penguin spawned a retarted Oriole.

Wallace: I like how you take a swipe at my team the first chance you get.

Tony: It’s what I do.  My favorite guy in the whole video is hoodie.  Any doubts on who he is, start watching at 0:50 and wait for his money close-up at 0:59.  Hoodie does not understand what’s going on.  He seems to be trying to figure out why the “Lighters in the Air” Beat keeps playing.  

Wallace: Anthony, I have to stop you for a second here.  You’ve been butchering my man Styles P’s song for too long now.  The song is called Blow Your Mind and they do shout “Lighters in the Air” in the background, but it’s not the name of the song.  I’m going to give Clap this, he did jack a beat from a solid NY artist.  Doesn’t he have that going for him?

Tony: Like I said before, it’s not the beat that’s the problem, it’s his elementary school rhymes.  And then there’s the whole concept of the video.  Clap talks up the virtues of working hard, getting on your grind.  Yet all he does during the video is chill out on the stoop while shaking peoples hands, dancing, drinking beverages and acting a fool.  Of course, Clap also goes to Rite-Aid so that he can buy a gross of Dutch Master dutches (1:23).  Often, a dutch is bought so that it may be unrolled and rerolled as a marijuana cigarette.  Usually in hip-hop, this is the typical usage of a dutch.  However, smoking a dutch is usually not associated with working hard or getting on one’s grind.  If Clap really wanted to extol the virtues of working hard, he should have shown a video of him doing just about anything else except what the video showed.  Maybe I am misreading the whole scenario, but currently I am to assume that Clap Cognac may find it difficult to pay the bills with the mike alone, at least based on the production quality of his music video.  So even though Clap would need to have an actual job in order to support himself, based on what is likely to result from his rap act, the video presents him straight chillin’ on the street.  Clearly, Clap is very far from being on his grind then.  

Wallace: See, I think you’re just missing the point of the video.  Dapping, rolling dutches and acting a fool are what Clap does when he’s on his grind.  In this case being “On My Grind” means that Clap is getting out to the people and doing his thing.  Maybe after he rolls the dutches he sells them and earns the money he needs to waste away another day.  It could be that Clap is such a seasoned hustler that he doesn’t need to work to make a living.  He could just rap a bit for food and shuck and jive to get some new Jordan’s or a sweet brown jacket with a retarded bird on it.  He’s definitely a professional at whatever it is that he does.

Tony: Clap Cognac’s go to moves in the video are to point and then dap up everyone else in the video.  

Wallace: The best part about Clap is that I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him outside of the subway at the Jamaica stop in Queens selling his CDs.  To say this guy is very NY is an understatement in my opinion.  But I’m going to say it anyway.  Clap Cognac, Professional Hustler.
