OSHA this week gave shape to areas of emphasis for the coming months. The summary document, direct from OSHA, can be found here.
The agency identified a number of topics it will focus on, including airborne infectious diseases, injury and illness recordkeeping, combustible dust, cranes and derricks and the adoption of GHS.
Slip, trip and fall hazards also will get renewed attention.
The Department of Labor also outlined its agenda, and much of OSHA’s and DOL’s work runs in tandem. Check out the DOL agenda here, including a video replay and transcripts of Q&A sessions with a host of officials, among them Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.
The topics that DOL and OSHA plan to cover will have far-reaching impact across American industry.
Resources: Enforcement clearly is being ramped up. While safety is always the best policy, make sure your safety signs, pipe markers and other markings are compliant and up-to-date.
Hello everyone,

Just wanted to share a few things regarding some changes going on at the church. First and foremost, please note we will be meeting at 1578 Creek Street for all regular and midweek services until further notice. This begins Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 and the new church schedule is as follows:

Sunday Morning Prayer 9:15am

Sunday School 9:45am

Sunday Worship Service 10:30am

Wednesday Evening 7pm

Secondly, please note the new church phone number. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to make a change with the church phone number. The new number is: (585)734-0416. You will see this change reflected on the church website already.

Finally, the prayer chain email now includes my Wednesday night’s Study Notes. This prayer email is available to all, but we do not send it to anyone who has not asked us to do so. If you are not on the list, let us know ASAP and we’ll be sure to add you. If you have a prayer request, feel free to let us know that too.

That’s all for now. Talk to you soon!

Agape,

Pastor Jay Parkman

Last night, as I was laying in bed, I started thinking about high school. I made a list in my head of all the things I should have learned. Here’s what I came up with:

*The books they made us read were actually pretty interesting. Because I was told I had to read them, I did what any normal teenager full of angst would do: boycott. However, later in life, when people make references to or it’s an answer in a crossword puzzle do I get really peeved at myself.

*The rec center. We had a pretty decent one. I went after school a few times, then sort of petered out. Not to mention I always got those Presidential Fitness Awards. (I know it’s lame to try, but dammit, it was fun to get a patch and called up on stage at the end of the year.) However, looking back, I used to think to myself, “You’re already skinny, why do the work?” Because now I have to work my ass off, stupid! …sigh.

*I was really good at drawing. While I don’t regret choosing the Army over going to Governor’s School for the Arts, in hindsight, I would have been able to make a career out of art far before the Army. Then I just sort of stopped caring about it and totally shut out the idea of going to art school. For that, I’m pretty sure I sold myself short, thinking I could never do well in college.

*Senior year. I so did NOT live it up. Shit, I spent half of it in Pittsburgh, ditching school. I blame this on my best friend Ian who told me that life begins after high school in Oakland. And he was so right. …OK, so I lived up my senior year as a fake freshman in college.

*I worked at Arbys. Sure, they paid 50 cents over the minimum wage, but really? Is it a rule that everyone has to work fast food once in their life? I had to close all the time, so I wouldn’t get home until midnight. Then get up at 7 for school? Whatever. Damn you for teaching me responsibility and ethics of hard work.

*Boyfriends. I dated the same guy for close to 2 years…or more. I really can’t remember. I do know he’s getting married soon, to which I wish him the best of luck. He was a really awesome guy. However, there’s a guy that I always wished I had dated just once while in high school. Even though facebook keeps us all in contact and I can see what he’s like now…gag…still. (However, I did marry the guy I would have NEVER dated in high school. That always makes me giggle.) Also, my first boyfriend from 8th grade is still my good friend today. He was also my favorite guy to make out with on New Years senior year. He’s also GORGEOUS. Good memories.

Oh high school. I’d never want to go back to you, ever. But still, it’s an experience we all have to live through. I’m just glad I survived.

Attention to the H1N1 virus continues to increase. OSHA has issued what it called “commonsense fact sheets” that employers and workers can use to promote safety during the current H1N1 influenza outbreak.
See the news release here, and the fact sheets here.
There’s also the ubiquitous flu.gov, which is pretty comprehensive.
But things are far from unanimous on the safety and health front. The Pump Handle blog reports on disagreement, and a letter the American Public Health Association has written to the president regarding respirator use in health care facilities to protect workers. Three other leading health organizations had called for surgical masks to be allowed.

Without no seams nor needlework (Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain).
Then she’ll be a true love of mine (Sleeps unaware of the clarion call).

Tell her to find me an acre of land (On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves).
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Washes the grave with silvery tears).
Between salt water and the sea strands (A soldier cleans and polishes a gun).
Then she’ll be a true love of mine.

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather (War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions).
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Generals order their soldiers to kill).
And gather it all in a bunch of heather (And to fight for a cause they’ve long ago forgotten).
Then she’ll be a true love of mine.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

I wasn’t able to actually watch the game, so I won’t pretend to draw too much analysis from this highlight reel. But…

- Good God, what a difference a year makes.

- This team is fast. It’s almost as if the quickness transplants we received from the newcomers have rubbed off on the old guys, possibly by some form of athletic osmosis. Even Razor Ramon looked unusually fleet footed out there.

That’s all for now. Hopefully we’ll have more for you tomorrow.

The Clarion team was outmatched in every category and it showed from the start when Kentucky came out and scored 12 points in just over 2 minutes. Had they kept that pace, the boys in Blue may have scored into the 300s.

The first exhibition left some scratching their heads. The team seemed to look hesitant. No hesitation tonight from all I’ve read. I won’t get to watch the game for a couple of weeks when it’s mailed to me (I’m in Afghanistan). Can’t wait to see this game.

I’m very excited to watch this UK team get the season started. I haven’t been this excited about a season since 1996. With Wall, Cousins and Patterson on the court, this should be a fun season. And a dominant one. Kentucky Coach Calipari has been taking the team through two a day practices this week so I fully expected a big improvement over the 4 November performance. The Cats did not disappoint.

Here’s the official box score from UKAA:

HOME TEAM: Kentucky

The Final Score was 117 UK to 52 Clarion. I can’t remember the last time that UK scored 117 points. Perhaps ‘96 or ‘97. Tubby didn’t score in the triple digits too often and Gillispie only had one game in the 100s. He lost that one. And I don’t remember a time that UK defeated a team by 65 points.

It is possible that this UK team will produce many firsts. I’m looking forward to seeing this season unfold.

I’m glad Patterson came back for this season. I understand Meeks leaving and the reasons he gave for leaving. Still I wish that he’d have come back. He deserved a season like the one forthcoming.

From KentuckySportsRadio: Kentucky wins this not-a-game 117-52. Best practice of the year, guys. Next time it counts.

From ESPN:

LEXINGTON, Ky. — John Wall proved to be worth the wait.

The heralded Kentucky freshman scored 27 points in his collegiate debut as the fourth-ranked Wildcats rolled past Clarion 117-52 on Friday night in an exhibition game.

“I asked him, ‘Is that your ‘A’ game?” Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “He was pretty good.”

Maybe even better than advertised after Wall was forced to sit out Kentucky’s exhibition opener on Monday as part of an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits from his former AAU coach.

He didn’t waste any time getting comfortable against the Golden Eagles, an NCAA Division II school in western Pennsylvania.

Wall nearly outscored Clarion in the first half and showcased a little bit of everything, from a dunk to a 3-pointer to a nifty behind-the-back dribble for a layup.

“He’s the real deal,” Clarion coach Ron Righter said. “I hope (Kentucky) can keep him because he’s in another league.”

What can I say? My visit to Clarion University was nothing short of fabulous. It’s been ten years since I have been back to Clarion — and it’s amazing that nothing has really changed in the town itself. Even the little coffee shop where I read looks exactly the same (the name has changed, but yep — nothing else has!). I also got to see faculty members I have not seen in years. Simply wonderful.

The best part of the day, of course, was meeting students. Besides visiting two classes, I also spoke to a group about my hodgepodge of a career, and my life as a poet. My presentation (which was pretty informal) spoke about marketing oneself, and I talked quite a bit about blogging. I was a bit surprised — the students in the audience were in their late teens and early 20’s (I think) and most really did not know a lot about blogging. I guess Facebook really is taking over the world.

And my reading was fantastic — I think I spoke to a room of over 40 students. I received a lot of compliments — and even sold a few more books (many of the students already had my chapbook from class. Poet Philip Terman used Stealing Dust in his classes). One student came up to me after the reading and said “That was awesome.”

Okay — so this post is coming out like a me, me, me, shameless plug me posting, so I will stop here. For those faculty members who may take a look at my blog, and for students who may now google my name, special thanks and warm hugs are being sent to you from Western New York. I truly had a great time! With the warm Autumn weather holding out, and the beautiful drive through rural Pennsylvania, it really was like going home again.

Check this news release from OSHA from Oct. 30:
“WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today announced it is issuing $87,430,000 in proposed penalties to BP Products North America Inc. for the company’s failure to correct potential hazards faced by employees. The fine is the largest in OSHA’s history. The prior largest total penalty, $21 million, was issued in 2005, also against BP.
“Safety violations at BP’s Texas City, Texas, refinery resulted in a massive explosion — with 15 deaths and 170 people injured – in March of 2005. BP entered into a settlement agreement with OSHA in September of that year, under which the company agreed to corrective actions to eliminate potential hazards similar to those that caused the 2005 tragedy. Today’s announcement comes at the conclusion of a six-month inspection by OSHA, designed to evaluate the extent to which BP has complied with its obligations under the 2005 agreement and OSHA standards.”

Hey, let someone else surprise his or her passengers with the resonating bass of the mythical “brown note,” made possible by an impractically full trunk of superfluous subwoofers.
One, Two, Three…Turn it Up, Sell it Fast

Pick Your Ad Package: The Free Basic Online Ad; the Enhanced Online Ad; the Free Online & Print Ad; the Two Week Photo Ad; the Two week Classified Ad; and the Best Buy packages (without or without a print photo).

Preview and Confirm: Give your car audio ad a metaphorical sound-check, making sure it is clear, easy-to-read, makes sense, and devoid of errors. Once you are happy with it, simply confirm and wait for the sweet sound of your phone ringing of the hook (sounds kinda like a cashier’s bell…).

Sell Your Stuff Within Weeks – Get Used to the Sound of Money
So you’ll have to get used to the thin and grainy sound of stock stereo parts when driving around Southern California – big deal! Once your ad is placed in at least one of the four editions of the Recycler Classified magazine, boasting a weekly readership of 850,000 (that’s not a typo!), and online at Recycler.com, a website that receives an incredible 6 million hits per month, the sound of counting lots and lots of money will make your car stereo sound not so thin and grainy.

I was hoping that the beautiful weather would continue because I am traveling a bit this week. On Thursday and Friday, I will be visiting my Alma Mater, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, for a reading at Michelle’s Cafe on Main Street in Clarion. A professor at Clarion University is using Stealing Dust for his class and I will not only be reading, but also visiting classes to talk about working class literature and poetry. The full news release is here. If you happen to be in Western PA, please stop by and say hi –

I’ve now been writing full-time for over a year, technically. I say technically because this time last year, I’d just started graduate school, and it was eating my life while I sat confused and miserable wondering how something that had seemed like such a good idea at the time could go so wrong. In the end, I determined the program I was in wasn’t a good fit for me. I gave it a year, and thought about pushing through the final year. However, I wanted to know if I could actually get a decent amount of writing done without grad school, since my production while in it was pretty poor (about as bad as when I was working 70 hours a week, really).

So I quit. This summer was full of moving, vacations, family obligations, and Worldcon. Even so, in the last four months I’ve managed to write two short stories, get all 10 short stories currently on submission polished as best I’m able, and finish a novel. It’s not been the smoothest going, nor the easiest thing ever. There are days when the rejections stream in (today there were two more…) and everything I do feels like it’ll never amount to anything at all. I even start scanning the job listings wondering if anyone will hire someone who has been out of work a year and has two pretty useless degrees (unless you need some Anglo Saxon translated?).

Then something happens to remind me, to nudge me back onto the path. Some days it’s schadenfreude, I’ll be honest. I read a forum post, or a workshop story post, or I’m talking to someone, or occasionally see something in a magazine and think “god, that’s stupid/terrible/sad, I’m totally not that clueless/bad/pathetic.” Some days it’s seeing how far I’ve come, the days when I read over a line or a paragraph and think “hey, that kinda works, what I did there. I think I understand foreshadowing now!” Some days it’s other people like my first readers who read my stuff and tell me they like this or that, or that they can really see improvement. And some days, the best days, it’s the writing itself, when it grabs me by the brains and I race along the story with every piece falling into place like a master level Go game on fast forward.

And looking ahead, I think I can keep going. I’ve got a novel done, and three people have already finished reading it for me, with two more due to finish in the next week or two. They’re compiling lots of information and commentary for me to sift through so I can make it the best it can be. And reading about the market right now, I’m sort of happy I decided to work on this novel, which is a fantasy with pretty strong romantic elements, instead of trying to finish Casimir Hypogean. Debut science fiction seems like it’s a tough sell right now, so breaking in with a fantasy novel might be easier. Of course, there’s no way to know if Chwedl will even sell. But I’m glad I’m making this the first effort the world might see and saving the more complex stuff for later.

Novel project 2 will have to start in a couple months, as soon as Chwedl’s query is out the door to agents. I’m not sure what to do. Part of me really wants to finish Casimir Hypogean to polished draft and then do roughs of the other two novels in the series just so I have them done enough that if by some chance the first sells, I won’t be coming back years later and tackling that world cold. However, while I think the novels have great potential, I think in some ways the steampunk mysteries I want to write might be an easier pitch. Local alternate history, alchemy, airships, murder, clockwork cats, and quirky characters? I mean, how can I lose? The Casimir story is in my head right now, however. It’s been coalescing for a few years now, ever since I wrote that terrible rough draft. I’m not sure how the third book ends, but I know how the second one goes, and how the third begins. I figure by the time I get there, it’ll be clear how it has to go. The steampunk book will take a lot of research, the Casimir books almost none (and what research there is I can keep doing as I go).

So I have some thinking to do. Meanwhile, I’ve been researching and doing rough quasi-outlines/notes for stories for my crazy short story month plans. It’s definitely time to start thinking about the workshop applications too. I want to apply early this year to all of them, get it out of the way. In some ways, I’m stressing about it more this year than I was last. Last year I really wanted to go, but it was mostly because I wanted to work with the people at CW. This year, I want to go for me. I think that either the Clarions or Odyssey could help push my writing to the next level. I’m clearly on the threshold, if my “nice” rejection stack means anything. I want to get past the personal rejections and make a sale, to write the kinds of stories that editors can’t put down. I think the workshops could help with this, could help me find out what I need to learn or practice to get closer to where I want to be as a writer.

I’ll likely be posting very boring somewhat daily updates during November about my short story mission. Stay tuned for the crazy!

Last night, I dreamt about Clarion. To my knowledge, I’ve never actually dreamt about the workshop before, only daydreams. But last night was an honest dreamy-type dream.

It was an anxiety dream, I think. I was walking around campus in my underwear, holding my daughter’s hand. I think that’s a symbol of feeling anxious about leaving her for that amount of time. I also dreamt about driving a car over a very unstable bridge, an image I suspect designed to remind me that it may still be difficult for me to get there.

There was other stuff: meeting WotF winners there (which seems unlikely since Jordan suggested he was the first winner to go to CW after his win), trying to write a story with pencil and paper, a play being performed about writers at Clarion (in which the character modeled after me was inexplicably shirtless), and other stuff I can’t remember.

Why is this dream hitting me now? I wasn’t even writing anywhere near bedtime last night. Maybe it was my guilty conscience telling me should have been writing if I want to attend this summer. Or maybe I just needed a new setting for the age-old in-public-in-my-underwear dream. Whatever the reason, it has the workshop foremost in my mind again. It can make focusing on mundane tasks — like school — very difficult.

“Rupp, do something, you big fuck.”

Surprise! It’s a hockey night in our house. (By the way, that last comment was from Matt.) While it may only be game 3 of 80 something, Matt gives it his all. 110% if you will.

I admire his dedication.

The kids and I went to Clarion for the day. It’s always nice going to Mom’s house. It’s warm, cozy, everything in its place…nothing like the house we grew up in. We lived in a larger house up the street (seriously, like a half a block away) but once Carly and I graduated, the house suddenly seemed too large to keep up with, so they downgraded to a really cute Cape Cod. Personally, I find it so comfy-cozy…it’s almost like a home away from home.

But back to the old house – it’s a sad sight now. Whoever bought it … wow. That’s all I’ll say. Wow. While I’m sure the landscaping could have used some form of, well, landscaping when we lived there … what they’ve done. Well. It’s, um, interesting. And the paint choices…all wrong. I’m glad, though, that it’s so different now, because it makes it so much easier to realize that it’s NOT HOME anymore. Still, I’ll sigh as I drive past and think back to all the memories I’ve shared in that house.

It was great. Carly and I lived in the finished basement. It was basically like our own apartment. Our shower was the size of my freaking Jeep. I’m not kidding you. Plus it had a built in heater right above the toilet. Talk about spoiled! The kitchen…oh the kitchen. It was HUGE! Of course, anything compared to the kitchen I currently enjoy *coughpieceofshitcough* is a step in the right direction. All in all, I loved that house. But it’s a memory now.

Clarion is a great small town. It’s safe, everything’s within walking distance and a cut/color/highlight is under 80 bucks with tip. Seriously, where else can you get that kind of service?

Our high school is really a junior/senior high school serving grades 7-12. My graduating class had 72 people. I’m pretty sure the majority of them are my friends on Facebook.

We have a Perkins.

Our grade school was supposidly built on a swamp and I’m pretty sure it’s just urban legend, but that’s the talk around town.

Everyone knows everyone.

Furthermore, everyone is related to everyone. (except for me and my family since we’re from Minnesota. So scandalous!)

We’re pretty original with names. We live in Clarion County, in Clarion township. We swim in the Clarion River, go to Clarion Elementry, then Clarion High School, and if you want, Clarion University.

It was such a great day. Now, as it’s coming to an end, it’s quiet. Claire is staying the night with Mom and having a great time as per usual when she stays there. She gets royally spoiled and sucks up every second of it. Smart kid.

Random – It doesn’t look too good for the Twins tonight. Good thing baseball is dead to me. I can thank the Pirates for that.

Now it’s time for bed and I’m hoping I can amp myself up in the morning to drag my butt to the gym. That’s another story for another day.

The American Society of Safety Engineers has hailed OSHA for moving forward with the UN’s GHS program.
The rule change by OSHA, if adopted as is now expected, would harmonize OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard with the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

Customer Reviews
“Pleased with this amp”

My first Clarion product and I’ve only had it a few weeks but I am impressed so far. When I was initially doing research on a sub amp this one specs kept impressing me. For the price you have a high signal to noise ratio, low THD, great options to customize the sound to your taste, a fantastic looking box, etc.

The closest competitor for me was an Alpine MRP-M500 and I do like Alpine products but this beats it hands down on paper, cosmetically, and in person.

Not only was this amp cheaper but it has 11db higher snr, 10 times better THD, an extra 125 watts x1 RMS, Class GH instead of D, and double the warranty.

The manual I was not impressed with though, it shows instructions for several amps which was annoying because they are all different in features. Also, maybe they’ve changed the layout on this amp and didn’t update the manual but the instructions don’t include accurate descriptions of some features.

The instructions do say to mount this amp so that airflow goes lengthwise. So I mounted it vertically to allow the heat to escape through the top and cooler air to enter from below, but with a small fan added this amp could probably be mounted in any fashion, especially since the circuit board is in the middle of the amp and the main vents below it.

The face of this amplifier is all-aluminum which is a great heat dissipator and is great to look at too.

I’ve had no trouble with overheating even in 100 degree weather. I was able to rotate my logo for my vertical installation also.

Of course the quality of sound depends on the speaker but I have zero complaints in this area. My sub actually has a lower RMS rating this amp puts out at 4 ohms, but a simple adjustment on the unit and I don’t have to worry about overdriving plus I have room for upgrades later. I bridged the amp to a single sub.

This is a Class GH amp which is the perfect combination of high efficiency and high sound quality. These aren’t that common, at least at this price.

I get a nice warm, tight bass with great low pass slope (only 12db/octave), and with the adjustable frequency I can dial precisely what frequencies I want my sub to handle.

I’m very pleased with this amp and the only thing I would improve would be the manual.

“Another Excellent Clarion Amplifier.”

Great powerful amp. Sound is excellent and transparent. Very powerful. Very well made amplifier. These are the Robert Zeff/Nikola Engineering designed. Lots of great high-end features. Very precise crossover. Puts out more power than advertised. Also, very efficient power. I upgraded to this amp from an older Clarion, which I was also very pleased with. You can use this to drive a set of high power components a sub woofer, or a set of mid-basses for a 3-way. Excellent fan cooling/unique heat sink design. Clarion logo able to be rotated to suit your install. All gold plated connections w/ philips head screws makes it easy to make adjustments. All potentiometers feel very solid. High and Low level input. Highly recommended amplifier by Clarion!

Here’s the latest from Chemical Safety Board on the explosion at the Imperial Sugar facility in Georgia. In sum, proper cleaning and maintenance procedures would have gone a long way to preventing this.
This is from the official CSB release on Sept. 24:
“In a final draft report released today, CSB investigators said the February 7, 2008, explosion at the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia, resulted from ongoing releases of sugar from inadequately designed and maintained dust collection equipment, conveyors, and sugar handling equipment. Inadequate housekeeping practices allowed highly combustible sugar dust and granulated sugar to build up throughout the refinery’s packing buildings, CSB investigators concluded.”

Our sources tell us that new rules from OSHA on combustible dust hazards are due virtually any day.

Our sources tell us that new rules from OSHA on combustible dust hazards are due virtually any day. Combustible dust is a potential hazard in a large number of industries, from woodworking and finishing to chemical or food-processing plants.
More on OSHA’s current guidance is available here, from the agency’s page on combustible dust. Additional information is available from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board. The video will convince you, if you’re not yet, of the real dangers. As the video outlines, proper cleaning and maintenance procedures are critical to reducing this hazard.
OSHA’s action now follows several deadly accidents around the country in recent years. In fact, a few individual states had moved ahead of OSHA in promulgating their own rules on the hazard.
The emphasis on new rules, standards and enforcement ties into OSHA’s and the Department of Labor’s new activism this year. Sources both in and out of OSHA tell us we can expect more activity on reducing the combustible dust hazard.
