The final exams for both my winter-quarter classes are on Monday, so it’s not surprising that

The final exams for both my winter-quarter classes are on Monday, so it’s not surprising that I’m spending time reflecting on the quarter. One of the things this quarter has shown me, more than previous quarters, is that my dedication to my students may go beyond the norm. There are three incidents that make me consider this:

As I was discussing the end of the class and the courses that follow, multiple students simultaneously asked me if they could continue to consult me about homework even when they were no longer in my classes. I told them that they should start with their current instructor. They replied that while they would do that, in their experience many faculty weren’t as responsive as I am.

Last week I developed a cold that impacted my throat. I taught both my classes anyway, even though doing that caused me to completely lose my voice and made my illness dramatically worse.

I sprained my ankle at the end of January approximately 5 minutes before my first class was scheduled to start. It never even occurred to me that I wouldn’t teach my classes that day, which I did standing on one leg. Anyone I tell this story looks at me as if I’m somewhat insane.

I have always considered myself to be responsible and a hard worker. I’ve also prided myself on being able to draw a line between work and home life, making time for my family and friends. But I honestly felt that my approach to my job wasn’t much different than other faculty. I’m realizing that may not be true, and that other faculty may draw the line differently than I do. If that is the case, should it impact what I do? My first feeling is no, but the jury is still out.

Everyone needs a mentor. We all need someone to guide us and help us realize what our fullest potent

Everyone needs a mentor. We all need someone to guide us and help us realize what our fullest potential is with the added comfort of knowing that our mentor is sincerely interested in our personal development and success.

For almost a year now, I have been mentoring with Lisa Zahiya, bellydancer extraordinaire from Asheville, NC, and am so glad that I have! Last year, right around this time, I had my own classes, was hosting a myriad of events around town, and was an OK dancer. I was fluent in most props by now but perhaps clung to them a wee bit too desperately. On the outside, I knew that I was respected in my community, but I knew that I was not where I wanted to be in my dance career.

Enter Lisa! I hosted Lisa Zahiya last year for a series of workshops and a gala show. Her teaching style captured my attention and I knew that I wanted to try to create a class atmosphere like hers. Not to bore you with the details, but Lisa created homework for me that made me incredibly accountable to her and myself.

Lisa Zahiya teaches

What kind of homework do you ask? Well, with my personal dance practice, at first, I had to drill my layers: hip rocks, with a hip movement overlayed with an arm path of my choice. Now take the same drill and use your obliques to initiate the hip rocks. Now add a chest movement in there. And so on, and so on. And I had homework for each of the areas of weakness I had identified. Hard stuff…but amazing. Even as I am typing this, I am looking over some of those first assignments and realizing I need to do them a bit more!

We reviewed videos of my performances and dance practices, we set goals both personal and with my business, and we checked in often to see how it was going. Lately, I have been assigned that very difficult task of dancing without props! Nooooooooo!!!!

Noooooo!!!! I need my props!

But it is a good assignment, one that I need desperately and one that I am already working on and loving!

I can tell you this, the last piece of planning homework, my own personal Bellydance State of the Union, was an eye opener! Not only, I have I met my business goals already for 2013, but I can actually see a change in my dancing. More than myself seeing the change, others have told me the same, that my dancing has evolved. Needless to say, I am so very grateful and so very happy. It has been a lot of hard work, but it has been an enjoyable journey!

Janim dancing at a wedding 2012

The even more amazing repercussion has been the change in myself when in my day job. I am a landscape architect by trade. I love what I do, but over the past year of mentoring, I have gained more confidence and joy in my work than I had before.

Week 10, the final week of winter quarter. The “Dead” week.
So this winter quarter was full of ups and downs. Mainly regarding the class lectures. I found them terribly boring and I saw myself not really paying attention. As well as going. I mean, I did do the homework and catch up in notes and all that, but when week 8 came around, I just somehow starting roller coasting down. I have forgotten to do some assignments and I just got really lazy. What I’ve been doing more lately is staying in my dorm room watching YouTube videos or watch something on Hulu/Netflix. I felt like a hermit who locked herself in. But for some reason, I had this little boost of motivation and I want to make this last week more worthwhile.

I should stop telling myself that I always have next quarter to do better because you know what? They’re going by fast and I’m just hurting myself in the long-run. I’m going to end up in my Senior year saying, “Only If I….” etc. I’m going to stop setting myself up for failure or disappointment in my college career.

Dang, man. It’s like I have a senioritis all over again… but the extended version.

“Fighting!”

Teacher: Maria, go to the map and find North America

Maria: Here it is.

Teacher: Correct. Now class, who discovered America?

Class: Maria

Teacher: John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor?

John: You told me to do it without using tables.

Teacher: Glenn, how do you spell ‘crocodile?’

Glenn: K-R-O-K-O-D-I-A-L’

Teacher: No, that’s wrong

Teacher: George Washington not only chopped down his father’s cherry tree, but also admitted it. Now, Louie, do you know why his father didn’t punish him?

Louis: Because George still had the axe in his hand.

Teacher: Now, Simon, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating?

Simon: No sir, I don’t have to, my Mom is a good cook.

Teacher: Clyde, your composition on ‘My Dog’ is exactly the same as your brother’s. Did you copy his?

Clyde : No, sir. It’s the same dog.

Teacher: Harold, what do you call a person who keeps on talking when people are no longer interested?

Harold: A teacher

Well, I’ve been extremely inconsistent with this blog and would like to thank everyone who’s still following me(: I’m going to try to update on a weekly or bimonthly basis from now on…wish me luck!!
Ok, so spring semester is here and halfway gone. So far so good, my grades don’t suck, I like most of my classes, and I’m making friends!!! This semester I am taking:
-Biological Principles (lecture,lab,and discussion)
-Intro to Bio Anthropology (lecture and lab)
-Trigonometry (just lecture)
-Intro Chemistry (just lecture)
-Sociological Perspectives (just lecture)

Since I last posted I have gone on winter break, started this semester, and now I’m on spring break. Woohoo! Right? Wrong, I have soooooooooo much studying to do it’s unbelievable! In fact I should be studying right now, but it can wait(:Next week I have three exams, a presentation, and a quiz. The presentation isn’t that big of the deal, but the person in charge of putting it together dropped out of the class and my other group member is irresponsible so I have to complete by myself…oh well. I’m more concerned about the three exams. Tuesday I have the Bio Principles Exam, Thursday I have the Bio Antropology Exam, and Friday I have a trig exam.

These past few days I have been concentrating on my Bio Anthropology exam because although it only covers two chapters, there is a butt load of content I need to know. The worst part is that this professor doesn’t believe in multiple choice! The chapters cover primates and primatology. I have to memorize the order, sub-order, superfamily, family, and some species of all primates. I also have to know what characteristics apply to each of these things. For example, primates in the infraorder/suborder platyrhinni or platyrhinne have flat noses, unlike those in the infraorder catarhinni or catarrhines, which have downward facing noses (humans are in this category). Then on top of that, we need to know the ecology, sociology, and more about these primates.

I really should focus on my Bio Principles exam though because there are lots of processes involved in the chapters we went over. I really want to do well on this exam because he said that it’s going to be hard. I should focus on Trig too because we can’t use the unit circle paper he gave us, on the test

Well that’s all for now! I’m going to eat now and continue studying. Thanks for reading!

~Ana

Husband and I have been toying with the idea of me starting my own training classes. I’ve learnt so much from doing Foundation with Lumen that I feel very confident in being able to pass on that knowledge.

Agility specific clubs here in Melbourne are full- there’s 12-18 month waiting lists to get in with a Foundation dog. Everybody in the agility community knows me and what I did with Mallei so I have a good reputation as a dog trainer already…

I’ve recently been doing small-group classes with another trainer and I feel like there’s parts missing that I would really benefit from, or, which would be better done as a pre-agility/puppy class, and then a bit more of an advanced foundation class…

So I have lists of what I’d teach, and I feel like it’d be a really successful program that could be tailored for different people, and because there’d be essentially pre-foundation and foundation, you could either do more equipment, motivation, speed and turns in one (which is what we’d like to be doing) and more shaping, tricks, stays, games and playing, etc in the pre-puppy.

As I’m planning to take a few Silvia Trkman classes, I could also work in what I learn from those to my own sessions, and since nobody here has taken her classes as far as I’m aware, that would be totally new and different.

I already know people who would be interested in coming, and have access to a large client base through friends and other dog people… I could charge people $20-25 a class, and after a few lots of classes should have paid off the equipment I would need to outlay for (some nice jumps and actual proper tunnels would be a good start, followed by a dog-walk (I’d want to encourage running and it’d be great to have my own DW to practise on before trailing!))… I need to find somewhere that I can hold the classes in the evening- so an oval with lights somewhere, organise insurance… I think it’d be fun…!

Ever since I was a kid, I have always been amazed at the sight of fireflies that glow at night. Alth

Ever since I was a kid, I have always been amazed at the sight of fireflies that glow at night. Although it’s rare to see them nowadays, I know how one person feels whenever he or she experiences the magic that fireflies bring. With this, I want to share these 10 fun facts about fireflies that I have found in the internet:

1. There are more than 2,000 species of fireflies, a type of beetle. Despite their name, only some species produce adults that glow. Fireflies in the western United States, for example, lack the ability to produce light.

2. Males that do glow use their flash to attract females. Each species has its own pattern of light flashing.

3. Firefly light can be yellow, green or orange.

4. Firefly larvae may glow, even some that live underground or under water. They use the light to communicate to predators that they aren’t tasty (they produce unpalatable, defensive steroids for protection).

5. The light they send out does not have heat, like the bulbs we use. The firefly’s light is cold.

6. The back portion of their abdomens is transparent. There are cells of crystals or chemical substances inside which get broken down by enzymes. Some energy is released in the form of light.

7. Antarctica is the only continent without fireflies.

8. Fireflies are bioluminescent throughout their life cycles. Bioluminescence begins with the egg, and is present throughout the entire life cycle. In fact, all firefly eggs, larvae, and pupae known to science are capable of producing light.

9. The well-known femme fatales in the genus Photuris use a trick called aggressive mimicry to make meals of other fireflies.

10. If you catch them, it is best to let them go after an hour or two. They have very short life spans, so keeping them alive long term is not an option.

If you’ve got any blocks of code that you use frequently, e.g. specific comment blocks, you can very

If you’ve got any blocks of code that you use frequently, e.g. specific comment blocks, you can very easily add code short cuts in AX 2012 to auto-insert the them in to your X++ code.

For example you can setup AX to automatically create surrounding comment such as

whenever you type “mycom” and press the tab key.

How do you accomplish this. Very easily!

Step1: Locate the class EditorScripts in the AOT.
Step2: Create a new method with the format public void template_flow_[shortcut](Editor editor)
Step3: User the editor parameter to add code the code that you would like inserted. e.g. editor.insertLines(“\\test comment”);
Step4: Add your method to the case statement in the isApplicableMethod method in the section relating to template “editor scripts that does not apply to Macros”

Thats it, now if you type your shortcut into any editor in AX and press tab, the “\\test comment” code will be inserted.

Here’s a full example method

I love bellydancing. No, let me rephrase that…I really, really love bellydancing! I love teaching it, performing it, choreographing it, well, I think you get the idea! I was recently asked to elaborate just a bit on the above by answering a few questions about myself. So here we go!

SHAZAM! Janim balancing a sword!

1. How long have you been dancing and why out of all dance forms did you choose bellydance? Excellent question! I have been bellydancing for over a decade. I have been performing and teaching for about 4 years now. I recently pursued my certification in the HipCurve Bellydance Program Level 1 (already registered for Level 2 in the summer!) to strengthen my instructional skills and feel ready to take on the next 10 years! I first chose bellydance because it looked exciting, and I was extremely curious! Needless to say, I fell in love with it instantly!

2. What are some of the benefits of bellydance? Empowerment, self confidence, a healthier body image to name a few. There are also physical benefits as this is a very accessible dance form that is typically low impact but gets you moving. I would love to mention though that it is simply F-U-N! How often do we get to do something that is fun and totally for ourselves? Not often enough, I say, so for this one hour a week that you give to yourself in bellydance you can dance around and feel great about YOU!!!

3. What words of encouragement do you have for those who are curious about bellydance? Go for it!!! Try a class, try ten classes, and smile! If a move is hard, well, that is alright, smile, keep your body loose and relaxed and I guarantee within no time, you will find yourself in the move. Bring your friends to class. That is how I got started! My friend and I strolled on in and always had a giggle watching each other try to learn to shimmy or play our finger cymbals.

4.What IS bellydance? I think this may be a difficult question to answer as many people have nefarious images conjured when bellydance is mentioned. Bellydance is a dance form that originated in the womens’ tents. Women danced for each other to pass the time. (Even today, go out on a dance floor and watch the women dance around each other in a circle…LOL). I have a small suspicion that we woman in the west are not as comfortable with our bodies as we think, and perhaps we feel awkward with enlarged hip movements, shimmies, and the costuming that exposes are beautiful middles. But we should remember that bellydance makes everyone look beautiful since these are moves that flow with our form, that emanate from the inside to the out.

Teacher Krishna is in her first year of teaching and striving to create impact on her preschoolers

Teacher Krishna is in her first year of teaching and striving to create impact on her preschoolers’ lives.

If a person would look at every slum book I have answered during the past years of my life, he would notice that “my favorite subject/s” varied from one year to another. So bearing that in mind, I’m just going to state the reasons why I have liked those subjects.

1. The Teachers

a. Teaching Style

By means of their teaching styles, they could be considered as “cool” teachers. They have handled their classes well by being neither too lenient nor too stric

t on their students. They were also very creative in transmitting the knowledge to us, even considering our different learning styles.

b. Heart for Teaching

During my limited time with

them, I saw their concern not only in developing our minds but also our hearts. Instead of inflicting fear to me and my classmates, they have earned our respect by showing the best that they could be. They may not be at all perfect but they have set good examples for all of us. They were literally our second parents who loved and cared for us as if we were their own children.

c. Sense of Humor

Who doesn’t want to

have fun while learning, right? My teachers have succeeded in doing that for us. They made the hard lessons light by putting some humor in those. They gave examples which we could understand easily and relate completely. The room was filled with bouts of laughter that we didn’t even notice that we were learning new things.

d. Physical Appearance

Of course, having good looks was a plus factor. I was inspired to go to class every day because I knew that I would see a beautiful sight there! A little inspiration

on my part as a hardworking student was a necessity anyway. Ha! Talk about rationalization. J

2. The Classmates

a. Sense of Belongingness

No matter how hard our subject was, we didn’t care much about it and still worked as a team, a family; and thus, we survived the hardships together. Knowing that I was not alone in the battle has made the subject worth it.

b. Sense of Humor

My classes wherein my teachers

were so boring and almost seemed lifeless were compensated by my super funny classmates. Their butt-in jokes were the most epic ones. Because of them, I found myself going to those classes with much positive anticipation.

d. Physical Appearance

(Please refer to the af

orementioned) J

3. The Subject Content

a. Interesting

If I find a subject interesting, then I look forward to going to class daily. I am pilgrim of knowledge so I am happy that I have learned many things from those subjects. As a matter of fact, they have helped me to understand and appreciate more the world I’m living in.

4. Internal Motivation

a. Challenging

Like most students, I wasn’t in good terms with Mathematics… at least during the first weeks. It seems that God has forgotten to download completely a Math software in my brain that’s why it’s unnatural for me to grasp the concepts in one click. Good thing, I don’t easily quit. I took my Math classes as challenges to overcome. And thank God, He allowed me to pass those with flying colors.

What’s your favorite teaching aid?

Nursery songs! Yes, nursery songs. The famous “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” would be on the top of the list. I do not know how and why, but these songs have a

magical soothing effect on my students. These help me to manage their moods and make them be ready to learn the lessons in class.

What inspired you to be a teacher?

How does one become inspired to be someone? The answer is simple: there is an influence, an inspiration that made him to be inspired.

Now, rather th

n. In order to be inspired, one has to experience something. I believe that luck is really on my side for I have been given many chances to experience something wonderful by means of awesome people I called “teachers”.an “what”, I’d like to answer the question, “Who inspired me to be a teacher?” Inspiration for me is more on the affective side of a perso

My teachers have helped me develop myself in various ways. I remember during my kindergarten days up to elementary days, I was a very meek child. I wasn’t going to say or do anything unless someone asked me or I felt the need to. These teachers, these awesome people, have encouraged me to speak my mind. They told me that I am capable of doing great things if I acted upon it. They believed in me. I believed in them too. And I’m still glad that I did.

Since then, I have wanted to do something great, to be regarded as an “awesome person”, and to impart all my learning — from the cognitive aspect to the behavioral one — to younger people.

At this moment, I know that others might easily think that Amalayer, but actually, I’m just returning the favor to my teachers by paying it forward. I’m now doing what I have always wanted to do. I am now a teacher.
