The title is “Cum Dederit dilectis suis somnum”, sung by Sadrine Piau originated performed by Vivaldi, and in Latin.

Here is the lyric:

Cum Dederit dilectis suis somnum
Cum Dederit dilectis suis somnum
ecce haereditas Domini
filii merces
fructus ventris
fructus ventris

Cum Dederit dilectis suis somnum

ecce haereditas Domini filii merces
fructus ventris

fructus ventris
fructus ventris
fructus ventris

for He gives sleep to His loved ones.
Behold, children are a heritage of God.
The fruit of the womb is His reward.

I think the relation of this song with the film is that, God have given many things in this world, including the earth. The earth is a miracle from God, we share the same earth, we breath the same air, we drink the same water, there are may animal and grain, mineral and oil, until we doze and sleep. Nonetheless, in the last 50 years, we have radically change our world, also disrupted its balance. We don’t have time to wait, our children crave for fruit we plant in the humus. so this is the time to conserve our only earth and care for ourselves, biodiversities, and earth itself.

Chronoswiss – this luxury watch brand could be considered a newcomer by Swiss Watch industry standards – it’s founder Gerd-Rudiger Lang only established his workshop in 1981. However the Chronoswiss name has been elevated to a high level of respect across the watch manufactures industry due to its passion for the watch making craft and the essence of its traditions.

On serving his apprenticeship, Gerd-R Lang became an employee of the prestigious Heuer watch company (later to become TAG Heuer). He was to remain here for twenty years working on the famous sports chronographs and stopwatches including the iconic Monaco chronograph watch.

On his departure from Heuer, Lang furthered his studies becoming a “Master Watchmaker” and in 1982 the first watch bearing the name Chronoswiss was unveiled and the company was officially registered in 1984.

The Regulateur unveiled in 1987 become a signature piece for the company showcasing the now synonymous oversize “onion” crown, exhibition case back, soldered lugs and milled bezel.

The Chronoswiss Regulateur was also a world first being the first wristwatch with hours and minutes displayed separately.

Other important pieces in the Chronoswiss portfolio include the Chronoscope, the Delphis, which features retrograde minutes and digital hour display and the remarkable Digiteur which combines non-analogue display with an analogue movement.

More recently the Sauterelle models have been added to the collection, complete with jumping seconds – traditionally a feature of a quartz watch even though the movement is entirely mechanical.

The Sauterelle, translating as “Grasshopper” is important also because it is Chronoswiss’ first manufacture creation having been crafted entirely in house from scratch.

The history of the Chronoswiss brand may only reach back 25 years but it is a name often mentioned alongside centuries-old traditional watch companies. These ingenious and innovative timepieces will surely become the heirlooms of the future.

At Live Aid, held at Wembley on 13 July 1985, Queen performed some of their greatest hits in what has been considered their best performance to date.[32] The band, now revitalised by the response to Live Aid and the ensuing increase in record sales, ended 1985 by releasing the single “One Vision”. The song was used in the film Iron Eagle. Also, a limited-edition boxed set containing all Queen albums to date was released under the title of “The Complete Works”

Opened in 1967, this Greek-run restaurant has retro-kitsch charm. Old-school neon lights in the windows, leatherette stools, juke boxes in the booth seats and plenty of local characters. Service is friendly. There’s a Journal de Montreal on many of the tables, and they generally listen to the hockey game on the radio if the Habs are playing. And now for the poutine…

Fries: Good crispness, not too greasy, but generic oven-baked McCain frozen fries. 15/30.

Gravy: Quite tasty but slightly lumpy. Quantity and temperature are good. 40/50.

Verdict: Mediocre, but they’d probably make a good frites-sauce if you’re stuck in Rosemont at 2AM.

News & Trends: Decadent designer Tom Ford has designed the ultimate in aviator sunglasses this season, taking a classic style to a whole other level. Ford’s new Pablo model, recently spotted on Brad Pitt, comes with two sets of lenses: one that fits right into the metal frame and the other set in plastic inserts giving the luxurious look of combination shades. Sunglass connoisseurs will notice the similarities to the Tom Ford Hawkings aviator, no longer being made, from his debut line.

The Pablo represents an evolution of the earlier Ford design in that they are much better proportioned, enabling a fine fit for both men and women. True sunglass history buffs will notice the influence of an old (1970’s) Ted Lapidus aviator with the plastic inserts in, and the Porsche Design Aviators from the 1980’s with the plastic inserts out. The Pablo is offered in three colors: gold / light havana (pictured above), gunmetal / dark havana, and gold /black, priced at $450 per pair at select eyewear retailers such as Eyegoodies.com. for JustLuxe

Classic Sounds….

Like…

Nasir Jones’ sophmore release was the Very First album that I sought out and purchased myself. I was 13 and figured it was time for me to define my music taste and hip-hop expertise by actually owning some full length albums made by the very artists who I spent hours upon hours sitting in front of the radio recording. So as I outgrew the craft of sticking toilet paper in the corners of whichever of my big sister Veen’s tapes I deemed wack or something she wouldn’t miss, it dawned on me that even though I was Thee Nicest at the skill of strategically pausing the recording right before the station identification, or the annoying Funkmaster Flex drop would come on, Maybe I should join the actual big boy club and have the uncut, uninterrupted project in my hands. Maybe then I’d know just what these Euro-chic and gangster flick references that all of the popular New York rappers at that time sprinkled in their raps were about.

Nope!

Never quite understood, but what I was surprised and ever so pleased to find was a full print out of almost all the lyrics contained on said album. I purchased “It Was Written” in the summer of 1996 at a Wiz in downtown Manhattan. I’m really showing my age because If I’m not mistaken, The Wiz doesn’t even exist anymore! Anywhere!

But it was on the heels of deciding that Nas was the most relatable rapper to me at the time. I didn’t know I was going to be a rapper. I had…uhhh…retired after a 2 year stint in a kiddie rap group a la Da Youngstaz. The thing is that, this particular summer would be the first time since I was 10 that I picked up a pen to attempt to start rapping again. It was actually the first time I picked up a pen, since I used to write my rhymes in my head (Word to Big!).

But anyway, Nas fueled my inspiration to re-enter the world of hip-hop and write narrative street tales because in the previous year, the spectrum of New York rappers was limited to killers, drug dealers, players, hardcore keepers of the funk, or obscure backpackers who nobody wanted to be.

Nas represented someone who strangely sat in some semblance of a middle ground where all these characters existed together. No one ever questioned how hood he was, but the general consensus was that he’s not the shooter, rather the guy chronicling the shooting. Not the kingpin, but perhaps the guy who ran with the Kingpin’s people and maybe did some jobs for him back in the day on the come up trying to stay fly.

We respected Nas for being something that we never had before; An authentic street poet. Not a preacher like Chuck D, Not a Teacher like KRS, Not a God like Rakim, not a Killer like Kool G. Not a gangster like Ice Cube – not even angry. Just a poet.

So I figured, I’m from the Hood. My teachers told me I was an excellent poet in school. I can slide in that same spot that Nas Held. He opened a door that wasn’t there before.

This was all until I popped the cassette in (yes I said Cassette) and got engulfed in a blitz of Mafioso-drenced, King of New York delusional episodic raps and psuedo-intellectual musings on Hood happenings.

I would find out later that this album was filled with subliminal shots at the other contenders for legendary status at the time, and was actually Nas’ idea of attempting to garner mainstream attention. I guess in a way it worked, because he got much more notereity from the singles released off of this album than his debut. Although Illmatic gets all the praise and critical acclaim, it’s not up for debate that chics or radio weren’t checking for mr. Jones until “If I ruled the world” featuring the then unstoppable (and sane) Lauryn Hill came out.

Anyway, I loved this album so much that I took it with me all the way down to Atlanta when I went to spend some time with my cousins who had recently moved there from Brooklyn. They were fans of M.O.P. (Who they grew up with), and anything that was New York-Centric, so I knew they would love it as much as I did. And they did. We played it in the house, in the parking lot, on the way to Kroger. On the way to Publix. On the way to and from the studio and the airport. It was fun times.

Until somebody’s little daughter was over one of the apartments with us, and as the video game playing and beer drinking ensued to the soundtrack of track 7 “Take it in Blood”, there was one moment of parental instinct that kicked in when my female cousin Rainy interjected and told us to cut it off after some lyric where Nas blurts out “..Pussies and Buttholes…”

At first I was like damn, why we gotta cut off the Nas just because somebody’s little bebe kid is over with the grown ups (and uhmm…almost…grown-ups??). But then it made me wonder, damn… as someone who didn’t use those kinds of words himself, how much did I actually relate to Nas? And what the Hell was Nas talking about anyway??

So upon a more scrutinizing listen after that epiphany, I realized that Not even Nas knew what he was talking about half of the time. Although I was blown away by the creativity of “I gave you power”, it seemed those clear, focused moments of consistent and linear lyricism and storytelling were far and few between.

I studied the whole lyrics sheet for the rest of my ATL stay and didn’t understand most of what I was reading. What the fuck is “Blood money in a pimp’s cum?” That math equation that he clearly wrote for Foxy’s verse on ‘Affirmative Action” not adding up, “dipped attache” “mad man Cassius Clay”…huh? The average casual hip-hop listener couldn’t tell you what Nas’ point is on the average Nas song. It just sounded good. And there is the biggest thing about hip-hop. The sound.

And the sound is what makes this such a classic to me. Besides all of the sentimental attachment I have to this album, the biggest influence it had on me was that sonically, it was like nothing else.

It proved that hip-hop had matured to a point where you can defy the standard and rap over MUSIC. This was music. These beats kind of set a marker for Nas. He bacame known for picking these melodious beats to tell these cinematic story raps over and it was a perfect marriage. The beats on this album were straight up Beautiful! haha!

Nowadays you only hear these kinds of beats on underground releases and rarely on Major releases. Yet ironically, these are the very kinds of beats that are behind most peoples favorite songs on most albums. Those songs that are the most memorable, and have the most feeling to them. Almost every song on this album had that kind of sound.

Some of the beats outshadow the rhymes due to Nas’ habit to dip into non-sequitters and randomness, not to mention overall unbelievable claims ( “Take it in blood” being a prime example), But my favorite moments are when he gets it just right and makes perfect sense all throughout one song with the perfect beat. The next best thing is when enough of the verses are followable and it’s just that damn dope that you don’t even care if it’s the most authentic or logical.

Having that said, my favorite songs off of this album are

“Black Girl Lost”

“Watch Them Niggas”

of course this hidden gem that only the cassette holders (such as myself) knew about – “Silent Murder”.

Despite all my perceived gripes with this body of work. It remains the very album that started my collection and began my journey. Anybody who knows me knows that I have Love-Hate relationship with Nas and it’s due to his inconsistency of Character, and sometimes hunger (“Live Nigga Rap” is the only track on the album where he doesn’t sound asleep. Maybe Mobb Deep put the battery in his back). I would say he’s a victim of how people envision him as some kind of prophetical griot who rallys for peace and is just so deep, but he fosters that very idea in the midst of delivering the most blatant contradictions hip-hop has ever seen beyond anything 2pac could have done. We’ve seen that he wants to be the King of New York as bad as Jay or Big wanted to, he just dressed it up with less glitzy fanfare and didn’t say it straightforward. He rarely says anything straightforward!

But it’s all because he’s a hodgepodge of things. As noted on the album he exhibits this himself when he professes “I’m all about techs, good jux and sex, Israelite books…” when you start a sentence off like that, where the fuck else can you possibly be going??

While he may not be My Favorite rapper, he is definitely one of my biggest influences, and this album changed my life and the way I view rap albums forever.

If I may be bold enough to rate it on my 16 Candles scale, I would say it falls just short of Phenomenal and give it 12 Candles out of a possible

4, 8, 12 or 16.

by Jonathan Burrello

Perhaps there is nothing remotely binding between the holiday in which we partake of turkey and welcome family fellowship with the 1934 Laurel & Hardy musical “March of the Wooden Soldiers” (a.k.a. “Babes in Toyland”). All I know is that at my house growing up, it wasn’t Thanksgiving without this odd comedy (it used to be a holiday staple on TV in the 60’s and 70’s). The film stars the legendary comedy team of the infantile Stan Laurel and the rotund Oliver Hardy and features an interesting—and sometimes dark—peek into the world of fairy tales and nursery fables.

My deep admiration of Laurel and Hardy clearly influenced my enjoyment of this twisted yarn, but even for the uninitiated this film has undeniable charm and an incorrigible sense of whimsy…but it wouldn’t hurt to enjoy some of their other work and funny shorts first. The duo’s shtick was a basic one: two grown men with extremely childlike sensibilities saunter in and out of trouble while the softer more naive Laurel inadvertently causes more duress for the more domineering Hardy. They would put these characters into many situations and milk the comedy out of any circumstance and, naturally, the darker the dilemma the funnier the solution. Like Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy were always funniest to me when they were up against monsters, killers, ghosts, gangsters, etc. and in “March of the Wooden Soldiers” (directed by Gus Meins and Charley Rogers) they bounce from delightful childhood storybook characters to an army of Bogeymen led by the conniving Crooked Man, Silas Barnaby (Henry Brandon).

Based on Victor Herbert’s 1903 operetta, Silas Barnaby is the wealthiest and meanest man in town (you don’t get rich by being nice to people), and he is in love with Little Bo-Peep (Charlotte Henry), but she loves the gallant Tom-Tom Piper (Felix Knight). Barnaby will not be beat so he frames Tom-Tom for pig-napping one of the Three Little Pigs and then furthers the deed by making it look as though Tom-Tom also ground him into sausage. Ollie Dee and Stannie Dum (Laurel and Hardy), two boarders with the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe (Florence Roberts) and friend of Bo-Peep, suspect foul play and so embark on a mission to find the truth…but get themselves arrested for burglary when they try to steal Mother Peep’s mortgage from Barnaby.

Screwball mishaps abound as the lovable duo rub elbows with Mother Goose, Rock-a-by Baby, Old King Cole, Mary Quite Contrary, Santa Claus, the Sandman, and many others. There are five musical numbers including the memorable “March of the Toys” instrumental piece that plays during the final battle when Laurel and Hardy unleash 100 giant Wooden Toy Soldiers on the vicious Bogeymen. The battle at the end is a lot of fun. All the characters band together to fight off the onslaught of monsters in their own unique ways. “March of the Wooden Soldiers” is a funny, entertaining, scary, bizarre, and fun Thanksgiving adventure for everyone.

Personal notes: The Bogeymen are actually not the scariest part of this film. My family and I have always been slightly perturbed by the weird rubber pig costumes and the glassy eyed cat playing the cello (pigs and cat all played by people in suits). Another spooky aspect (but somehow absolutely fantastic in an incredibly deranged way) is the presence of Mickey Mouse. I’ve heard that they couldn’t get the rights from Disney (little surprise), but they still have a black mouse character with round head and ears, white gloves, red trousers, and yellow shoes. The spooky part: Mickey Mouse is played by small monkey that has been freakishly adorned to vaguely resemble the iconic rodent. The Mickey Mouse creature scrambles around, throwing bricks at the cat and is easily one of the coolest parts of the Bogeyman Battle (I won’t ruin it), but is still slightly unnerving. Last note: This film is one of those rare movies that really benefits from the computer colorization process. Originally shot in black and white, the colorized version actually enhances the film and brings a lot more magic to this already special movie.

This celebrated classic may be strange, but I encourage you to invite Laurel and Hardy and the rest of Toyland into your home this Thanksgiving.

The logo features the zodiac signs of all four members: two lions for Leo (Deacon and Taylor), a crab for Cancer (May), and two fairies for Virgo (Mercury). The lions are embracing a stylised letter Q, the crab is resting atop the Q with flames rising directly above it, and the fairies are each sheltering below a lion. There is also a crown inside the Q and the whole logo is over-shadowed by an enormous phoenix. The whole symbol bears a passing resemblance to the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, particularly with the lion supporters. The original logo, as found on the reverse-side of the first album cover, was a simple line drawing but more intricate colour versions were used on later album covers.

Sometimes we all struggle to get motivated for a workout and could all do with a little inspirational kick every now and then, aside from caffeine, which usually works pretty well, music can really put a kick into your workout. Here I’ll list some good songs for you to exercise to on your iPod or any other mp3 device. Obviously you’ve all got different music tastes, some people could think of nothing more unbearable or non motivating than pulling up a Tiesto classic on their iPod, whereas I would much rather listen to that than some Slipknot headbanger, here’s a list of tunes I listen to and then some I’ve found using playlists.com.au, starting with my very own play-list, be warned, they are mostly dance tunes, so skip to the bottom if they don’t interest you!…….

Tucked away under the arches of the Harbour Bridge in Sydney, Australia, is the Classic Throttle Shop. This amazing vintage car emporium is also home to CTS Auctions, and on Saturday 5 December a very rare motorcycle will be going under the hammer. It’s a gorgeous 1972 MV Agusta that never officially entered production, being a five-speed 250S with electronic ignition. According to the catalogue, this bike was based on the 250B twin produced between 1967 and 1971. The history is unique: “First imported to London on January 30, 1973 by Gus Kuhn Motorcycles, MV factory production records indicate the bike was completed on October 27, 1972. Dated by the MV Owner’s Club, it was built some 17 months after 250cc production officially ceased.” The guide price is AU$21—$26,000 (US$19,300—$23,900), which is pretty good for a one-of-a-kind from the prestigious Varese maker. [Thanks to Richard Fowler of Motorsport Retro for the tip. Image by Karin Johnston of Linzdesign.]

First of all, my apologies for being absent for so long. I really like blogging here but sometimes just lack the time to do it. Anyway now we got that out of the way, here’s something I came across this week. From November 22nd until December 1st the East African Safari Classic is going on in Kenya and look who’s in the lead…

Indeed, a Mustang. Day 3 of the rally just passed and Ian Duncan is currently leading this rally with his classic Mustang, proving once more the versatile quality of the car I suppose If you want to find out some more about Ian’s 400 bhp Mustang, check this out.

Go Ian!
