Food for thinking.

My mother appreciated it bacause she didn’t have to worry about our dressing. When I start attending high school I recognised dressing way could make a difference. Some of my classmates competed in getting the best pair of shoes or trousers. Here you are our key word: Do you want to win girls? Dress a pair of jeans of that brand! I rised against this stupid thinking. Times are changing and now dress code may be oriented to confound our students’ gender identity or sexual orientation. In a society acclaiming rite of ambiguity, even American high school have to struggle in order to discipline their teenagers. While psicologists and educators speak their points of view up, here you are my opinion: school may be a place where to learn, and not a catwalk. I don’t apprecciate high schools adopting uniforms, but I would be quieter if my daughter gave a snug shirt up, following a dress code which represents education without mortifying her personality.

It is unbelievable that the 5 weeks course is over. It is still like yesterday when I got to know them and even I couldn’t remember their names. Now when I know I remember at least their first names, it is time for us to continue our own journeys.
I got so many lessons from this course. I must admit that many times I fell asleep, but I learn more than I really imagined before. I got to know so many experts in their field and see how they are really dedicated in their work. It is a unique experience to meet so many experts during this 5 weeks. I am so thankful for them.
And for the organization, Dr. Claus and Dorina, they really did a great job. They were and are great help for all the participants and though sometimes we think that they could do it better in some stuffs, we really couldn’t ask more because we are really grateful for their help and hospitality.
And the participants, our group I can really assure you that we are great group. May be we think sometimes some persons acted in some stupid manner, too childish, too enthusiastic, or may be too serious, but I know we have to learn our lesson.
There was a father profile among us, there is a very cute and innocent one, there is so many smart persons in this group. I am nobody among them, but I really thank God for the opportunity to know them.
I will miss some people more than other. It is nothing personal here, but still I spent more time with some more than the others.
I think God is smiling to me today. I have to struggle to wake me up and tell myself that everything will be OK for us because He is in control.
Thank YOU, Jesus for this opportunity. And thank you for letting me know something about you, guys.
To be continued…( I will post the picture soon)

Have you ever needed to find a long lost friend, relative, or classmate? Searching through the offline channels can be time consuming and expensive, and often ends up with massive time investments but very little substantial information. When you need to find a long lost person, the best place to look isn’t necessarily through your rolodex of contacts. In fact, the best places aren’t always community orientated at all. Government Records services can get you the most targeted and relevant information without the trouble of contacting people yourself, and all for a minimal cost.

Not familiar with government records? To put it simply, they’re a record keeping service, where you can find government records in a centralised, easy to navigate location. Whether you’re looking for employee information, relatives’ contact details, or information on criminals and sex offenders in your city, government records services are by far the simplest, cheapest and quickest way to find the information that you need.

Don’t waste your money on private investigators and expensive offline services. While you’ll most likely get similar results, they’ll cost you anywhere from ten to one hundred times the cost of a similar online service. With private investigators charging upwards of $100 per hour for their services, it’s hard to justify the expense when vastly superior online services are available for just a fraction of the cost. Why cause yourself trouble and expenses when you can get even better service online for 1/10th of the price?

Need information but don’t have time to investigate by yourself? With government records it’s as simple as typing someones name into your search bar and letting the directory take care of the rest. Rather than spending massive amounts of time and money searching for what you need, government records services can take care of it cheaply and easily with minimal work from you. This free report, full of information on government records services and investigation ideas, explains in detail just how government records can help you find the information you need.

So, are you ready to cut your person searching time in half? By utilising online tools for finding personnel records, phone numbers and addresses, you can get in touch with the people you need much faster than by looking offline. With this free report, you can learn all you need to know about government records.

Months ago I wrote about our lives being like a beautiful, colored piece of fabric, intricate thread

Months ago I wrote about our lives being like a beautiful, colored piece of fabric, intricate threads of color twisted, woven, wrapped about one another to create a coverlet for our souls…….The threads representing each and every person who is “woven” into our lives: some by happen stance, some by deliberate action, some by choice, some by circumstances, some simply by love…..the love that magically flows from us to them and simply, and quietly draws them back again to us in the form of precious friendship or love of family and co-workers and neighbors. It seems again today, the realization of just how short our lives truly are is paramount in my thinking.

The colorful threads of people, and life!

I received an email, thank goodness for technology, that a very dear classmate I had written of not long ago had passed on to spend eternity with our Lord, on October 6, 2009, Michael “Scott” Taylor from Lansing, MI, my hometown.

At such news, I feel numb…..memories and thoughts whirling through my mind as I recall our last conversation, his last email, all the times in between when he sent me humor from afar or updated me on the passing of another dear classmate, actually 2 of them….How thoughtful he was to keep me in the “loop” knowing I could not return to Michigan to express my condolences and to cry the tears of sadness with the families mourning the losses. And yet, through Scott, I was able to share precious moments I wouldn’t have had otherwise…..we laughed, we cried, we questioned, we discussed everything from the Vietnam war to the one and only date he and I had in high school so very long ago. He got carried away with the enthusiasm he had for riding his motorcycle, or shoveling snow for an elderly neighbor, the delight he had for having his own cozy home and of course the joy in his heart of spending such precious moments with Chloe, his granddaughter, the apple of his eye…. He spoke so lovingly of his relationship with his family, how dear they all are to him and his love of his Mom….what he wouldn’t do for her! I was privileged to hear the joy others gave to him and he returned 10 fold in such ordinary and sometimes extraordinary ways….

We talked of our Catholic upbringing and how many of us have grown to know so much more than our foundation gave us. We’ve sought answers to questions of the 60″s within our own hearts and souls and some like myself and Scott developed incredible personal relationships with Jesus, with God ,because of the trials and joys within our own lives.

I will miss knowing he’s in Michigan and perhaps one day will plan a trip here….I will miss his sense of humor and his magnetic smile….his kind and understanding heart and his badge of courage not only in the war but in the last days of his life. Nothing I could begin to write here would compare with the way this man lived his life, wove the threads of others in his own tapetstry….he was an incredible and brightly woven thread within mine, one of positive hope and laughter I am so blessed to have known him and shared the special moments we did, I will miss him ….as will all his loved ones, but I know in my heart he will always be looking down upon us, sitting near our Lord and possibly sharing a humorous, quick-witted story or two with Him….He will remember each one of us and every member of his family and when it’s our time to join him in the peace and wonderment of heaven….there is no doubt he will be walking with God, to hug and greet us with his radiant smile…..you will live always in all the hearts of those who knew you…..

We could really talk a lot. The Moon (in the day) is a good place to hang out. It’s bright, colorful, quiet and we practically had the whole place to ourselves. In the night, it’s good too but it can get pretty loud and crowded. It feels good to catch up with old friends.

[dieter]

I’ve come to a conclusion. The life of a social butterfly is exhausting and time-consuming, and social butterflies can’t necessarily seek out social relationships that can be fully developed and nurtured.

My Reconnection Project has required substantial time, effort, and energy. I can’t imagine making all the connections I’ve made if I were gainfully employed. And by connections I mean the range of activities – written correspondence (yes, I still write letters), emails, Facebook postings, phone calls, dinners, lunches. If I were gainfully employed, I’d be coming home from working eight-plus-hour days and chances are I’d be exhausted. Cultivating friendships would probably be the last thing on my mind at 7:00 at night. (Okay, so I’m starting to develop some empathy for the people who weren’t quite able to pull off a reconnection.)

Looking back at all the people with whom I’ve connected, I began to wonder whether there’s a number that represents the optimal number of people with whom one can maintain social relationships – and one’s sanity. With the advent of Facebook and other social media sites, however, the term “social relationship” represents something other than what it meant to me growing up. Facebook and other social media sites have changed the face of friendship – pun intended.

Here’s how I believe “friends” or “social relationships” are broken down nowadays (with definitions from m-w.com). One size no longer fits all.

Friend: One attached to another by affection or esteem

Acquaintance: A person whom one knows but who is not a particularly close friend

Contact: A person serving as a go-between, messenger, connection, or source of special information (as in a business contact). [I would also categorize a “contact” as a networking opportunity.]

Colleague: An associate in a profession or in a civil or ecclesiastical office

I’m also going to throw relatives in the mix, because I believe it’s important to maintain friendly relationships with your relatives.

Relative: A person connected with another by blood or affinity

And if that weren’t enough, I’m also going to throw in classmates, because I think it’s really cool to reconnect with people I haven’t spent time with in over 37 years.

Classmate: A member of the same class in a school or college

I believe that lines can become blurred and that a person can vacillate from category to category and can, additionally, be attached to more than one category.

My classmate Erica has a blog called The Quest for Everything. She also writes about UVM med school life, and even brings up things from lecture I haven’t mentioned in my entries. You’ll also find her thoughts on medical/healthcare issues, as well as her random reflections. All worth reading.

I HIGHLY recommend visiting her blog, particularly if you want another UVM medical student’s perspective about school or life. She’s a very good writer. I’ve added a link to it in my Blogroll section. I know I’ll be reading her.

The Intel Classmate Tablet PC and regular laptop style Classmate PC

So taking a regular laptop or netbook to school is great (I love using my HP Mini netbook everyday — so much easier to take around school), but sometimes you want something a little more durable, or maybe something that gives you the ability to use a touchscreen and “write notes” (or doodle). Intel, not usually known for designing whole computers themselves, actually has designed a small tablet like PC that lets you do just that– full keyboard to take notes, or twist the screen and just write on the touchscreen, and even a bigger more traditional netbook style Classmate if you want all the ruggedness without the touchscreen.

Here at IDF we got to spend a couple of minutes with the Classmate, and overall, were very impressed and found the Classmate to be a very cool idea. Pix and full details after the break.

The more “normal” netbook looking Classmate PC

Ok, so actually right now there are 2 Classmate PC’s — one tablet (8.9 inch screen), and one “normal” style laptop (10 inch screen). Both are designed for students (mainly those in the K-8th grade area– but hey, I wouldn’t mind a cheap, solid touchscreen PC), and since they’re designed for younger ages, they are rugged (meaning don’t worry about this dropping from your desk or hand to the floor and cracking in half), have waterproof keyboards (remember how many times you or a friend spilled something in 2nd grade), and even has a handle for carrying it around — something you don’t see everyday.

Spec’s wise this is pretty much like your normal netbook — 1 GB RAM (upgradeable to 2GB), Windows XP, 1.6 GHZ Intel Atom processor, and either a 30 GB hard drive (for the traditional laptop design) or a 60 GB hard drive (tablet design). You also get some specially designed software– such as theft deterrent software (more on this coming soon from IDF, but basically it allows you to disable your PC so the thief can’t get to your data) and depending on where you buy, a lot of dedicated education apps like a textbook reader (seen below– no more carrying around 50lb books!), a webcam, and, on the tablet — you even get an accelerometer (like in the iPhone, iPod Nano and iPod touch which means that when you flip the iPod on its side, the screen rotates) and a resistive touchscreen (meaning you need to use the included pen like stylus to really make good use of the touchscreen. You can still use your fingers to draw or write — it just doesn’t work as well as the stylus as it isn’t designed like the more finger friendly capacitive touchscreens found on the iPhone and iPod touch).

Reading a textbook on the Classmate Tablet PC

We really liked using the Classmate in the brief moments that we had them, and even though we found them to be a little bit heavy, the keyboard on the tablet a little small (though it is designed for hands much smaller than mine), and not as stylish as say a MacBook, they definitely seemed to be something we wouldn’t mind using in school everyday.

Here’s the bad part though — Intel doesn’t actually sell them to individual customers. Instead they’re designed more for schools to buy and distribute. You can buy them online though if you can find them (try checking out the link here for the tablet. ), and when you do want to buy, say, only 1 for you instead of, say 20 for a whole class — it is pretty expensive at $499.99 to start. There is said to be a new 10 inch tablet Classmate coming sometime early next year, so maybe things will change a little bit by then.

Oh, and if you really are into this design like I am, and are looking for a new netbook, try looking for the ASUS Eee T91 which we wrote about back in January — it’s also $499, but offers a bigger hard drive than the Classmate PC tablet (the standard netbook hard drive: 160 GB), has the ability to add in Bluetooth and TV (pretty sweet), and is designed for an individual to purchase.

You can learn more about the Intel Classmate PC at Intel’s site here.

I happened by my old friend. So naturally we chatted a little, well, our definition of little, that is. She’s got her own family now, just quit from her job to become a ‘full-time” mom, and is planning to start her own home business. All is fine and perfect, it seems. She is so happy, and I am for her too. Then, since this is a chat, my turn should come, right? Well, it did but I hope it shouldn’t have.

So she asked, “What have you been up to? Married? Nah, you’ve got no ring. Kids? Well, you are not that type. So, what have you been up to?”

Why did I feel like I am the president, who needs to report the state of the nation? Lately, I’ve been dreading this kind of chance meeting. Now, I am so scared of it. I actually tried to hide from her, but she’s got those eagle eyes no prey can escape from. I was the prey, am definitely the “prey” type.

I replied, “Oh well, I’m in grad school. Taking my MA. God, you don’t know how tough it is. That’s about it. Before you saw me, I was buying some stationery for my paper”.

All the time I was saying my piece, her left eyebrow was like hanging a mile up. I can’t blame her. I was a nutcase in highschool. I was never the brainiac type; 25% of the time I was absent. My former adviser even cried because he got reprimanded, and it was all my fault. My friend’s disbelief is understandable. I was really itching to get away from this pathetic ritual, when she asked the most cold-blooded question of all,

“Do you have a boyfriend? When are you two getting married?

The bombed was dropped, the Corregidor has fallen. I was so dead. How did I extricate myself from this situation without having to confess my colorless lovelife? I just smiled, one of those wicked ones that conveys so many things but actually means nothing. It worked, and we parted ways. Her thinking my life is so exciting for words; me just happy that I got away. I am definitely going to next year’s reunion.

(I’m exhuming my old blogs from my previous site. It seems there is no other way but upload them laboriously one by one. WP and the other site has no import/export agreement)

Well, it did but I hoped it shouldn’t have. So she asked,

“What have you been up to?

I replied,

“Oh well, I’m in grad school.

I finished High School way back March 2002. After graduation day there were still calls, emails and text messages from friends every now and then but as time goes by, the frequency waned from everyday to once a week to once a month ’til no more. Thanks to friendster and facebook that enables each and everyone of us to somehow stay connected to people from our past more specifically our high school friends.

But last Friday, August 21 it felt like entering a time machine. My high school best friend visited me in our house and we chatted for like eight straight hours from career to investments and of course, love life. When she was about to go home, we saw another friend from high school whom we lost contact for some reasons. We said our hi’s and hello’s and chatted about everything. But those two encounters were not enough, ’cause even before that, a friend from high school was inviting me to join his church group. This friend is some sort of special way back high school and it’s such a surprise to hear from him again and got an invitation alongside. But all these weren’t still enough, someone texted me last monday telling me that my ex-boyfriend wants to make amends with me for old time sake, yes, my ex-boyfriend is another high school friend. Our story is sort of connected to the special guy. I don’t know the real intentions of my ex-boyfriend suddenly appearing to be so apologetic about the past but I do doubt if his intentions are pure. I really believe that there is something malicious behind it, I know him and I’ve had enough of him for me to feel this way. The thing is, he’s trying to reach me again through our common friend who used to be our “bridge”, so high school.

I’m glad to once again hear from my those three friends I’ve mentioned but the “ex” thing is something I’d rather forget. Those three people still played their same roles, the special friend still makes a buzz the moment I mentioned him to them, the ex thing is still interfering with the sudden revival of my friendship with my “special” friend. Oh well, will high school ever end?
