Un amico mi ha fatto un regalo inspettato indovinando da lontanissimo quello che mi piace. Le sorprese si annidano e quando non faccio gli occhi scuri riesco a scovarle tutte.

Un paio di giorni fa ho avuto uno scambio di sms con un’amica. Qualcosa del genere:
“Ciao C., mi mandi qualche consiglio per libri belli belli non classici?.”
“Ok, specificare l’utenza e cosa s’indende per classico.”
“L’utenza sono io. Con classico intendo ingiustificatamente lungo e pesante, e anche di autore classico.”

A casa ho lanciato la sfida a Fabrizio. Abbiamo deciso di compilare due liste e di inviarle entrambe alla nostra amica. Per ogni titolo doveva essere naturalmente indicato l’autore, un brevissimo commento e un voto da uno a quattro espresso usando il simbolo del dollaro. Abbiamo passato la serata passeggiando avanti e indietro lungo la libreria, blocco e matita in mano, sguardi minacciosi.

“HE ESTADO EN EL PARQUE CON PAPÁ Y CON AARÓN”

Summary: There’s a new girl in school named Ashley Wyeth. She dresses weird and likes art, so she and Claudia are soulmates. Until Ashley becomes strangely territorial, wanting Claudia to only hang out with her and only spend her time doing art-related things. This leads to skipped BSC meetings (THE HORROR) and some very crabby BSC girls. Once the Kool-Aid makes its way out of Claudia’s system, she realizes that her new “friend” is actually a jealous, pretentious, irritating snob, so she breaks ties with her and returns to the BSC fold. Because if you’re going to engage in cult-like behavior, it should be to a group that can help you earn money.

There isn’t really a B plot, but there’s a mention of Dawn’s brother Jeff having trouble in Stoneybrook and wanting to go back to California. This is a theme in the next couple of books and comes to a head in book 15.

Thoughts: I used to think this book was really boring, and I wasn’t exactly looking forward to rereading it, but this time around, I found it kind of hilarious. And I mean intentionally hilarious. Claudia’s funny! There’s an especially funny moment when Ashley announces to the BSC girls that she’s Claudia’s mentor, and Claudia thinks that that isn’t helpful to sorting out the situation because Ashley’s the only person who knows what the word “mentor” means. (Which I find sad, since they’re in the eighth grade.) There’s also the mean note Stacey leaves Claudia which reads, “In my breadbox of friends, you are a CRUMB,” and Claudia making a list of lists of things to do. I never caught a lot of the humor in this book before.

I also never realized how much of a girl crush Claudia has on Ashley in the beginning. It borders on a tiny obsession. Ashley really does become a mentor to Claudia, which is just strange since she’s a freaking 13-year-old hippie. She’s not exactly Georgia O’Keeffe. She also hilariously tells Claudia that by doing things like sitting, spending time with her friends, and, I don’t know, homework, she’s ruining her “career.” She’s 13, you freak. Also, I don’t think you can call it a career until you actually make some money doing it.

The unintentionally funny moments come when Claudia and Stacey note how weird Ashley’s clothes are. Stacey can’t get over the fact that Ashley wears bellbottoms, and Claudia describes an outfit that she wears that doesn’t match. Yes, Claudia. Talking about a girl’s clothes not matching. Is it ironic in here or is it just me? (Claudia: “What, we’re ironing now?”)

Kristy, Stacey, Mary Anne, and Dawn decide to get revenge on Claudia for missing meetings by eating a bunch of her snacks, then hiding the leftovers in the wrong places. Remind me never to make them mad.

In the one chapter that talks about Jeff, he gets in trouble at school, is told he can’t leave until his teacher talks to his mom (I…actually don’t think that’s legal), and, since he can’t reach Mrs. Schafer, calls Dawn to come in and talk to his teacher instead. Since when is a 13-year-old an acceptable parent or guardian for a ten-year-old? Though the situation is made even better when Dawn has to bring Myriah and Gabbie Perkins, her sitting charges, with her to the school. She pulls them in a wagon and they’re covered in makeup because they’ve been playing beauty parlor. I bet Jeff’s teacher retired after that meeting.

I was looking up Edward Cullen on Wikipedia and I saw that it said that Edward was a Byronic hero. Because of that, I clicked on the link that explained what a Byronic hero was. Anyway, as I was reading the characteristics, it did sounds like Edward As I continued down the website, it mentioned that Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles and the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera were Byronic heros as well, but I digress with the Phantom. That made me think about how much Lestat and Edward were alike in the sense that they are both Byronic heros. I think that’s the reason why I don’t like either character. I mean, it’s not that I hate them, but it’s just that they’re not my favorites characters from their respective series. Anyway, I think that’s the reason why I don’t like Lestat and Edward is the fact that they’re Byronic heros.

In my search for any Lestat vs. Edward stuff, I found quite a few pictures that made fun of Edward and the Twilight series or making fun of the fact the Twilight series “outshines” the Vampire Chronicles. The one that I found to be the most funny was the one where it showed Edward and Bella together in the first box, and the following three boxes showing Louis, Lestat, and Armand telling their opinions on the series. I found that Lestat’s and Armand’s reactions to be the most funny. Their reactions were classic Lestat and Armand. Anyway, the next one that I thought was funny was the one where Lestat as picking on Edward. I just found those funny. By the way, you can find the originals at this site.

When I was pregnant I took prenatal yoga classes at Puma Yoga in Lakewood. �I really enjoyed the studio and meeting other pregnant moms-to-be. �Now they have started to offer postnatal classes. �I was really looking forward to our first class but had no idea that Henry would enjoy the classes so much. �He likes the lights, music and baby stretches & exercises. �But his absolute favorite is the baby massage. �He get very zen-like after. �Plus it gives him a place to wear his baby leg warmers!

It’s Winf and it’s booooring. Still one hour left… Help Me!!!

So the Spring Catalog came out for the 2010 semester at Napa Valley College. I haven’t even been able to finish this week of classes before my mom is on my ass about knowing what classes I’m gonna take. First of all I really want to take a lot of my classes with Claudia this semester since that would essentially be the only time I would get to see her. She comes back from El Salvador tomorrow. Gosh, she has such an amazing life and I don’t think she even realizes it. I mean think about it…she has 2 brothers who are always on her side (for the most part) no matter what. She has overprotective parents, but they love her and she is still as free as someone could get. She’s got all this family around that doesn’t make her feel like they are choking her. Now that’s probably because she doesn’t have quite as many people in her family as I do and one of her brothers is on the other side of the U.S., but still. The thing I admire most about her is that she has a job and a best friend she can count on whenever she needs someone to talk to (Bee) and she also knows what she wants to do with her life and she understands the college world and the people in it and she is surrounded by sooo many friends I’m almost jealous of her. I honestly do wish that my four brothers cared at least a little like they do in the movies where the brother and sister who are close in age are really really good friends….that doesn’t really happen in real life does it? I mean I’m not saying that my brothers are my enemies….they just aren’t really my friends like those movie-brothers are with their movie-sisters. Also, the movie-best friend. The person who somehow is actually able to leave whatever they are doing and go to their best friends’ aid whatever they need. Most people don’t have that ability and they are just stuck in whatever place they are just worrying and waiting…..I really hate worrying and waiting. Anyway it’s early…wow 1:30am…hmmm I really am worried about my life, which is probably why I can’t sleep. I’ve done nothing, but gone to school, hung out with Bee, and done my homework every school day until present. I have never had to do anything else so when I left Trinity and into the scary world of NVC, I did it alone because for some reason I don’t have the physical ability to be that person who can go to their friends and just talk to them about whatever is going on in your mind, even though I will gladly listen when they need to. It’s not that I don’t love my friends cause I really do I just don’t feel like I can talk to them about some things and then I don’t like talking to my parents about anything or my other family members. So at the end of the day all I have is me and no one else around to be that movie-best friend who waits on your front porch with a carton of your favorite ice cream and a sad movie on a hard day. Who will stay with you until you fall asleep and the one you know will always be there no matter what they will literally be right there beside you…..always. Thanks for listening

I was bored recently and was on my computer I don’t know why but I typed Lestat vs. Edward into Google to see what I would get. Anyway, a lot of stuff that popped up were drawings of people making fun of Edward through Lestat’s point of view, and videos and articles asking who would win in a no-holds bar fight. I immediately thought that Lestat would definitely win. I say that because, after looking up their powers as a refresher, while Edward has super strength, super speed, and can read minds, Lestat can do or has all of that, plus so much more. Lestat also has pyrokinesis, the ability to fly, and he’s telekinetic. Plus, he killed an entire wolf pack by himself, albeit with the help of his two mastiff dogs. Anyway, I really think that Lestat would definitely win the fight against Edward, and that’s assuming Lestat doesn’t fall in love with Edward first, which I doubt would actually happen, and that Lestat doesn’t hurt Bella.

Questo libro lo consiglia and e a questo punto direi che ci si può fidare. Dopo averlo letto l’ho messo nella libreria. Per farlo ho dovuto spostare un altro libro da cui è uscito un bigliettino  sul quale la mia calligrafia di qualche anno fa dichiarava:

Non so dei vostri buoni propositi perchè non mi riguardano. Esiste una sconfitta pari al venire corroso che non ho scelto io ma è dell’epoca in cui vivo.

Queste due righe dei CCCP sono molto meglio di quanto avrei potuto dire del libro di Malcom Lowry.

Here at AppMtn, it isn’t so very unusual to receive an outraged email or comment after I’ve said something less than flattering about a name.  The longer I write, the more keenly I think about the fact that these names are worn by real human beings.

So it is doubly thrilling when I write something and the parents are happy to discover the post.  Better still, they write about it on their blog.  Which brings us to adorable baby Estelle over at The Emperor’s New Crib.  Thanks to her parents, I now know that frikadelle means meatball in Danish.

A bunch of other random thoughts:

• I like Anneliese.  I can understand respelling her Annalise or Annalisa.  But Analyse?  Yup, I’ve just spotted a baby Analyse.  I don’t think her parents are psychiatrists;
• Anyone think True will catch on as a first name?  It’s sort of like a virtue name on steroids – far bolder than the established Grace and Faith, stark compared to the gently old-fashioned Felicity or Amity.  Actor Forest Whitaker has a daughter called True Isabella Summer.  True Jackson, VP is a Nickelodeon show ’bout a super-stylish teen who ends up heading up a line at an honest-to-goodness fashion label.  (And no, her mom’s name isn’t Kimora.)  The show is in season #2 and now airs on Nick UK an Nick Latin America;
• Nicole Kidman is about to return to the big screen as Claudia in the musical Nine. If it is half the hit of Moulin Rouge, the sadly neglected Claudia could finally get a boost.  After all, the devilish Satine still surfaces on message boards;
• I keep meaning to mention the compound name of my favorite project runway finalist – Carol Hannah.  I’m not wild about either name, but I find the combination strangely appealing.  Or is it too close to Poltergeist’s tragic Carol Anne?  I also heard a prospective model’s name mentioned during casting for the contestants’ shows – Drielle, which sounds a too much like a French power tool to be pretty;
• Nancy mentions strangely appropriate names – as in, a retail analyst named Tiffany Co.  I recently met a cantor named Aria and while chasing the kids around the Bass Outdoor Extravaganza Warehouse Winter Wonderland, I heard a camouflage-clad dad call his son Hunter;
• Bewildertrix spotted a Juno Alexandra Zénaïde, little sister to Hugh.  I agree with her – what a fabulous combo;
• Digital Spy talked with Emmerdale (it’s a UK soap) star Charlotte Bellamy about the names she and partner Mungo Denison chose for their three kids: sons Sunnie and Herbie and daughter Teddie Boo Florence;
• She’s not here yet, but Joey Lawrence tells Celebrity Baby Blog that Charleston’s little sister will be called Liberty Grace.

A few noteworthy posts you might’ve missed:

• Did you catch the Nameberry post on Old Lady Names?  It’s interesting to see how trends evolve – they report on the granny chic picks they’ve mentioned in each edition of Beyond Jennifer & Jason, now rebooted as Beyond Ava & Aiden.  They’ve definitely caught on in the DC ‘burbs – I can think of Ida, Mabel, Hazel and Elsie all in my ‘hood.  Funny to think that someday Cynthia, Barbara and Deborah will all sound fresh again, too;
• It’s no longer fashion limbo.  They’re now outlier names. Celebrity Baby Blog interviewed Nameberry’s Pamela Redmond Satran about names like Paulina, Bronwyn and Helena;
• Lastly, Xanthe Linnea has a great list of one-syllable names for boys.  I love Bram, Clark, Heath and Rhys.

It’s time for me to talk about some emotional stuff again ^^

We know each other for over 2 years, now. We visit the same class and are usually having a lot of fun together. I want to thank you now, for being my friends and for helping me to become the person I am today.

I know that it’s sometimes difficult with me, cause I can be pigheaded and a little egoistic and jealous. It’s also hard for you when I’m toooo sensitive and being angry because of nearly nothing.

I hope you know my good qualities good enough so that I don’t have to mention them ^^

A month after he watched his 27-year-old brother die of complications caused by the H1N1 virus, UCF senior Danny Demoraes entered the second-floor conference room at Health Services to receive the flu vaccine.

David Demoraes was two weeks away from becoming a firefighter in August when he began complaining of a cough, vomiting and body aches. By the end of the month he had been admitted to a hospital suffering from pneumonia, a complication of H1N1.

On Oct. 3, after a month-long battle, a blood clot blocked one of his arteries, causing his blood pressure to drop to zero, Demoraes said.

“I felt his heart take its last couple beats,” Demoraes said. “My brother and I used to do everything together. Now everything has changed.”

Danny Demoraes received his vaccine Thursday — one of the 1,500 doses available to students, faculty and staff delivered to UCF Health Services, 24,000 had been requested.

“It’s worth getting the vaccine because you just don’t know who it’s going to hospitalize…who it’s going to kill,” Demoraes said. “If the school is offering free vaccines why not prevent it beforehand?”

Chad Binette of UCF News & Information said that there have been 35 cases of H1N1 confirmed at UCF. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

in Atlanta, college-aged people are within a more at-risk category.

“For instance, between ages 5 and 24, the CDC estimates 2,196 cases per 100,000, but only 107 per 100,000 in the 65 and older age group,” Binette said. “UCF is one of the first Florida universities to receive vaccines and getting the vaccine is the best way to stay healthy and protect yourself from the H1N1 virus. The vaccine is safe and effective, and students can get it for free.”

Thomas Sutton, a UCF freshman micro & molecular biology major, agrees. Sutton said he gets his vaccine as a “force of habit” every year, but his grandmother nearly dying of the virus raised his awareness about H1N1.

Claudia Witcher, nursing director for UCF Health Services, began each session with a short presentation explaining to attendees the differences between the two vaccines. The shot is made of dead viral particles, whereas the attenuated nasal vaccine is a live virus that replicates only in the nostril, Witcher said.

“For homework, go out and tell your friends how easy it is, because we need all students to be immunized,” said Pharmacy Manager Sheryl Gamble.  

Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, reported Friday that 129 children have died from H1N1.

According to the CDC, Novel influenza A, H1N1, is a new flu virus of swine origin that first caused illness in Mexico and the United States in March and April 2009. It was determined that the virus was spreading from person to person with the infection causing a wide range of flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. In addition, many people also have reported nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to H1N1.

As of Nov. 1, the WHO reported the pandemic has infected 199 countries and overseas territories and caused more than 6,000 deaths.

According to a health alert put out by the CDC on Nov. 6, most people who get H1N1 will have a mild illness and recover in fewer than two weeks. Others, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in hospitalization and, occasionally, death. Complications can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections, or worsen chronic health problems such as asthma or congestive heart failure. The CDC urges clinicians to begin antiviral treatment of suspected persons based on direct observation as opposed to relying on rapid influenza tests or laboratory confirmation.

It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective in the system, Witcher said.

She recommends maintaining good hand washing practices, not sharing food or drink with others and employing good coughing and sneezing etiquette in the interim.

“My brother was all about helping people,” Demoraes said. “If anything, he would be happy that at least this message can get out there and help other people. That’s what he would have wanted.”

Recentemente minha mãe, de 63 anos, voltou a assinar a revista Claudia. Comecei a prestar atenção nessas edições e vi que em quase todas tem alguma matéria que envolve a leitora com mais de 60 anos.

A matéria é belíssima, mas os anunciantes ainda estão tímidos. Nesta edição, os anúncios que se aproximam a serem destinados às leitoras com mais de 60 anos são o de um suplemento alimentar que promete prevenir e ser tratamento auxiliar de Osteoporose –  doença que atinge principalmente pessoas que passaram dos 45 anos, mais comumente as mulheres – e outro de um creme recomendado a partir dos 40 anos de uma marca internacional de cosméticos. Aliás, esse último tem como modelo a belíssima atriz americana Andie MacDowell, de 51 anos, que aparentemente é a “modelo” mais velha da revista. Em todos os outros anúncios dessa edição as modelos aparentam ter, no máximo, 30 anos… 

Realmente venho constatando, junto às mulheres do meu convívio, é que todas querem estar “saudáveis e lindas” daqui a 20 anos (inclusive a que vos escreve!). E parece ser mundial: As mulheres não querem parecer velhas. Um dos “The New York Times Bestsellers” é o Livro “How Not To Look Old” (“Como não Parecer Velha” – no bom Português). Mas esse livro estou comprando hoje e falo dele em alguns dias.

Oggi in macchina ho ascoltato la cassetta di In a bar, under the sea dei dEUS. Ascoltavo questo disco qualche anno fa mentre scrivevo la tesi, specialmente la sera dopo cena. Mi ricordo la sensazione di un lento franare nella notte.

Oggi ho anche guardato i colori degli alberi perchè mi piacciono molto e con questa colonna sonora ho pensato ai mesi durante i quali ho vissuto a Bruxelles. In quel periodo ho ascolatato parecchia musica, ho scritto e ricevuto le ultime lettere di carta, forse, della mia vita. Ecco qualcosa direttamente dalla mia mansarda di Rue Des Palais:

Monday 11/09: Today I had my History class where I got my mid-term back. Got a B+, which isn’t bad, but it’s not great. I hadn’t had coffee all day b/c we ran out the day before so I was already in kind of a dull, tired, and I had a huge headache. We had a break at the middle of class and Claudia and I went to the vending machine to get some coffee. I had remembered that she was leaving for El Salvador, where she has family, the next day so I wanted to hang out with her before she left. She said that we could for sure get together so that made my day a lot better. She needed to go home and pack and stuff so she left and asked me to sign the sign-in sheet and get her papers that she left on her desk. So we said goodbye and she left and I went back to class and finished listening to the old guy talk about american history that I learned three times.

Tuesday 11/10: Today I woke up once again without coffee so I was once again tired and groggy so I just stayed in my room until I had to take a shower and get ready for my Astronomy class. I went to class and listened to yet another boring old man speak to me about the moon. I had texted Claudia twice about meeting up and she hadn’t texted back so I figured we weren’t gonna get the chance to hang out before she left the country . This made me a little sad, but I understood that she needed to pack and spend time with her family so I didn’t really make a big deal about it. Bee usually comes on Thursdays for the Napa T.E.A. Party and I had asked her if she worked day or night on Wed. she said day so I asked her if she could come up early and we could go out to dinner and spend the night like old times. I had found a letter she wrote me when she moved which made me really sad cause I missed her a lot. She said she didn’t think she would be able to come on Wed. because Monica, her sister, worked with her and probably wouldn’t want to go. When my dad picked me up from class he said the mom wanted him to pick up togo’s and jamba juice for dinner. This made my day it was delicious.

Wednesday 11/11: My new phone was supposed to come yesterday or today, but it’s apparently still in Texas so It probabaly won’t come until tomorrow or the next day. Bee had told me she might not even get to come on Thursday because Hilary, her other sister, wasn’t feeling well so she might not be up to coming. I have a 5 page Research Paper to write for my career class next week and I have to write a 3 page essay for English class on Saturday. Yup hasn’t this week been awesome so far *sarcasm*. The only good thing about today is that my dad went to the store and got me coffee

Per motivi di lavoro ho dovuto cercare alcuni autoritratti di artisti. Ho trovato questo sito che raccoglie autoritratti di tutte le epoche. Ho fatto scorrere l’archivio e mi si è stretto il cuore. Ho provato un’intensa commozione che non riesco a definire. Mi è sembrato di stare di fronte ad uno specchio che assolve, che restituisce innocenza. Ho immaginato dio mentre guarda negli occhi questi dipinti e dice ad ognuno: di’ soltanto una parola ed io sarò salvato.

Ecco alcune opere.

La Granja de la Claudia

Era una tarde nubosa de enero, en la granja de “La Claudia”, esta señorita era la dueña de una gran estancia, con su casa y el enorme granero; a su alrededor, un bosque que por la noche parecía espantoso.
Los vecinos no veían a la doña desde hace un gran tiempo, solo se veía a su esposo Alberto que llegaba siempre por noche y se iba al amanecer, él era un hombre rudo, extraño y siniestro a su vez. Un día se escucho un grito de una mujer que venía del granero de la señora, seguido de muchos más aullidos.
Los vecinos corrieron hacia el granero con sus escopetas, pinches, y lo que podrían tener a mono que sirva para defenderse. Al llegar al granero, nadie se animaba a abrir la puerta del granero. Don Thomas, tomo su escopeta y deslizo lentamente la puerta de madera. Al abrirla la vieron allí, con el cuerpo colgado de una soga, ¡Se había horcado!
Don Saiture, el vecino de la doña Claudia, cuando escucho el grito llamo rápido a la policía, salió y aviso a los otros vecinos que había llamado a la policía, que tarde o temprano llegaría un patrullero al lugar.
En unos minutos llego el comisario de turno al lugar del hecho. Pregunto a los vecinos si habían visto algo extraño los últimos días. Los vecinos nombraron al esposo que en este momento no estaba en la casa ni cerca del granero, que era extraño y que nunca se los veía juntos, ni en su propia casa. El comisario tomo un cortaplumas y corto la soga que se enredaba y estrangulaba el cuello de la doña, el cuerpo callo violentamente al piso, como una bolsa de papas. Y al cortar la soga se activo un mecanismo el cual rompió la viga principal del granero, y todo el techo de él, cayó sobre los vecinos, los policías que estaban buscando huellas, marcas entre otras cosas más para solucionar el caso que se presentaba en el granero. Así fue el final, el último día de la vida de los ocho vecinos, él comisario del pueblo, con un par de policías y la doña…
