It’s been a year and a half since I’ve used this title, but how could I not jump at the chance to post Dock’s fotos here of Clearwater on its “portable shipyard,” in this case barge Black Diamond, here mated to Cornell. Clearwater sometimes exits its element for maintenance.

Come spring, Clearwater will again cleave the Hudson. I wonder when Bowsprite will generate Clearwater magic in her sketchbook . . .? She has fotos, and I know a sloop’s not a schooner, mais . . .

Some continue to sail, like this sloop in Gravesend Bay Sunday, taking Maersk Michigan’s stern.

And here are two sailing hulls undergoing major work in Gloucester: left to right, they would be Eleanor and Beaver, “replicas” of two of four Tea Party ships. Can you name the other tea ships and the year of said party?

Eleanor (ex-Vincie N), a Gloucester fishing vessel built in 1936, seems to have undergone a major face-lift and . . . er . . butt-lift. Click here for a shot of Vincie N pre-conversion, and here for the story of the dragger’s fishing history.

Click here for info on that tea party. The other two vessels were Dartmouth and William.

Top two fotos by Dock Shuter; others by Will Van Dorp.

All week this week Tugster mentions the blog started three years ago! Three candlepower!

is actually a euphemism for “catching up,” which is all that’s on my plate today.

is actually a euphemism for “catching up,” which is all that’s on my plate today. Like a month ago, I intended to put up a link to a west coast tugboat blog. So here it is: fremonttugboat.

Otherwise, this post comes from scrolling back through fotos I’ve taken (and not used, I think) since late spring 2009. Try it yourself: Put up your number of images (your fotos, else’s, your drawings, else’s) and comment on their place in your life. Go back your chosen length of time, et voila, you have your very own retrospective!

Communication: nothing fancy here as the deck keeps eye on work and skipper while the skipper pokes head out the window to see and hear. Makes for clear communication, without which we in any endeavor face peril.

Community: it takes a strong bond between several rivertowns and watersheds to build a boat. If I squint, I see this motely corps of volunteers literally carrying Onrust to the water on their shoulders. Ok, I squint hard.

Comraderie: Harold and a thousand other folks have acted as comrades in my life, and I am grateful to you all. Gracias y merci buckets!

Contentment: or “peace” if you will. What matters it that this man is sitting where he finds it; it matters not that he’s across from a huge oil depot and a dredged waterway allowing ingress and egress for dozens of billions of dollars or ducats of goods each year. Here he is content. Like someone I know who spent weeks living beside refinery and tolerating it by imagining the hiss and roar emanated from a pristine jungle waterfall.

Charm: the Hudson River Valley happens to be a place of profound beauty and it mesmerizes me. But the eye of the beholder generates a portion of that charm. Open eyes will find it anywhere and in everything. A resident of this Valley published THAT BOOK on this date in 1851 . Know which one? Answer at end.

Curiosity: the sixth boro is a complex place geographically, historically, … you or I could continue this list. Here, like anywhere, it seems the more you notice, the less time remains to wonder about all the new things. What is this cove called over just north of Fresh Kills? Writing on vessels from foreground to back say RTC1, Crow, Relentless, and Cedar Marina. Does a road lead here?

More curiosity: What is this vessel that traversed to the north in front of Bowsprite’s cliff this summer? What cargo did it transport? What time warp did it emerge from?

Craziness: since writing about faces as prompted by the Robert brothers tome, I’ve had a blast with this. This one . . . an orange boar (not bore) with tusks in place of dolly partons. May some craziness–and a sense of humor about it– be evident everywhere.

Constancy: 1965 Near the St. Lawrence Seaway my father took this foto of a 13-year-old who became tugster. I was already out tracking down info for the yet-to-be blog back then, way before blogs, digital cameras, computers of the ilk we know. Some stuff doesn’t change. Shouldn’t disappear.

It’s unrealistic to stop after a half dozen fotos, but . . . discipline is imposed.

My last post fer a while . . .gone fishing for something. See you in a few with new tales. Sindbad calls us to muster. I tried unsuccessfully to find a Gordon Bok video-version of this, but this and this . . . a nice innocent feel too.

All fotos, except the ones by bowsprite and my father, by Will Van Dorp.

Moby Dick. Thanks, Herman. And apropos of nothing in particular except nature, see this video.

“What do I eat before, during and after exercise and what kinds of food do I eat?” Pre-E

“What do I eat before, during and after exercise and what kinds of food do I eat?”

Pre-Exercise
Well, you’re body needs fuel to function. It needs this all day long, you need to eat all of your meals (five to six), every couple hours with proper macronutrients (protein, carb, fat) and hydration in order to keep energy, strength, stamina and brain function up.
If you are doing exactly this, you really have no need to eat any differently before a workout. This would mean you would have fueled at least 2 hours ago if you are eating every 2 to 3 hours. The only reasons for change with this is if;
a. You have stomach problems from eating too close to exercise, you may want to schedule some space for meal before you begin.
b. If you want to gain more muscle mass (be more anabolic), you may supplement with a whey protein shake (roughly 1/4th your bodyweight in grams) 30 minutes before.
*If energy is low, or you feel you need more fuel than this (especially carbs), you need to reevaluate your diet.

During Exercise
There is really no need to fuel during exercise (if under 90 min). Again, if you feel this need, you are missing something in your regular diet and it needs to be re-addressed. You should only need to be focused on staying hydrated and working hard.

Post Exercise
I recommend that you quickly, before the sweat dries on your forehead, eat an easily mixed and digestible whey protein shake (1/4th your bodyweight in grams) that you have readily available. Then just continue with your regular schedule of meals, hydration, supplements.

Lastly, realize that this is not gold standard for every person training for every goal and that it is your job to listen to your body and understand what is right or wrong for it.

Hulk Hogan’s Divorce

souce: http://www.timboylesphotography.wordpress.com

June 18, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hulk Hogan is a worldwide celebrity living through a very public and ugly divorce and it shows.

He’s got millions of fans around the globe, but he’s also got millions of people who are very critical of his lifestyle, his actions and of his very public family dramas and disasters.

He’s what is known in the journalism world as an all-purpose public figure. It’s a term used by the U.S . Supreme Court in defining and protecting the first amendment: The right to a free press. In short, it means that if you choose to live your life in the public eye, you also agree to endure public criticism as well.

It’s the reason why tabloid newspapers, web sites and magazines can make a fortune over the latest Jon and Kate escapade, Paris Hilton’s alleged sexual promiscuity and whether Florida Governor Charlie Crist is gay or not. It’s the reason every television station in Tampa Bay, as well as TMZ and at least one freelance videographer can show up, shoot and broadcast every tawdry tidbit said in court or outside it.

There are limits to what the press can print about all-purpose public figures and there are penalities for writing or broadcasting items that are libelous or harmful to their reputations. But, to win a civil suit for libel, a public figure must prove “actual malice” or that the news outlet KNEW the item was false or used “reckless disregard” when publishing an item it thought MAY be false.

It’s very difficult to prove actual malice, yet a few celebrities have been successful in suing news outlets and many have also been successful in getting retractions and apologies without going to court.

I’m not here to cast judgement in the case. I’m merely an observer with an insight. A man with a camera hired to document the hearing and put the images in the public domain.

Hulk no longer looks like the wrestling superstar I grew up with. I understand he was a character there. He was a man playing a part, a role. He was making a living.

The reality of his life lately is much less glamorous and much more traumatic. Hulk looked like a man who was losing this round. He often appeared to be praying for relief.

Hulk’s estranged wife, Linda, currently gets $40,000 a month to maintain her lifestyle. Her attorney said she had over $740,000 in her own bank account when she was given the monthly alimony. This hearing was held because Hulk is trying to have that 40K figure reduced, claiming she spends it on drugs and her 19-year-old boyfriend.

Linda denies using drugs and has produced a drug screening that says she’s clean. Hulk brought two witnesses to court to say differently.

Hairdresser Tracy Morgan testifies

Tracy Morgan used to style Linda’s hair. She’s also done work for both Hulk and his current girlfriend Jennifer McDaniel. Apparently, Morgan doesn’t style Linda’s hair anymore. She testified that Linda used to ask her to cash checks for her, then have Linda’s drug dealer deliver drugs to Morgan’s business in an attempt to hide the purchases from Hulk’s attorneys. Linda’s attorney called the testimony a “complete fabrication” and repeatedly asked Morgan why she kept looking into the jury box where the press was seated. It was a dynamic battle during the cross examination. Linda’s attorney was very aggressive during his questioning of Morgan. Morgan was equally aggressive from the witness stand and was reprimanded several times by Judge George Greer to answer the question that was asked. Ironically, Judge Greer at one time also was known world-wide. He was the Judge that presided in the Terri Schiavo case and ruled that her feeding tube should be removed. She died in 2004 as a result of his rulings.

Judge George Greer admonishes the witness

Divorce cases are notoriously ugly, more so when celebrity and large sums of money are at stake.

Linda reacts to a witness’s testimony

The hearing ended without any decisions. Apparently, Hulk has more witnesses to testify regarding Linda’s spending habits. The hearing will resume in July. The divorce case itself has yet to begin. Both Hulk and Linda are also facing a civil suit from John Graziano’s family regarding Nick’s careless driving and the devestating injuries that cost John a normal life. Some people even say that this divorce is an effort to hide and divide the family’s wealth in preparation for the large amount of money that could be awarded to Graziano’s family.

  I don’t know.

Both Linda and Hulk brought their current paramours to court for some reason. It may be spite. It may be companionship and support. It may be for public relations. It may be because the press was there. I cannot speculate.

Hulk Hogan and Jennifer McDaniel leave the hearing

Am I a paparazzi? Nope! Getty Images does not endorse paparazzi behavior. I do not hide in trees, stake out restaurants nor chase people down the street. This was/is a legitimate news story. Many people don’t care about it, nor wish to hear about it. Many people do.

Do I like covering the case? I must admit I do to an extent. It’s a slice of life. I’ve spent many days in courtrooms over the years and there are powerful emotions and decisions exhibited there. This hearing was especially dramatic with accusations of drug use, fame-seeking witnesses, lying, cheating and alimony-money-hiding.

I like shooting stories with drama and emotion. I like capturing them. I like the challenges of shooting in a low-light courtroom with no flash. I like bantering with the baliffs and court security people and other press that are there. I like being an observer.

An intern from FOX 13 was sitting beside me during the hearing. I asked her afterwards if this was her first time in a courtroom and she said it was. I told her to savor it. Few court hearings have this much drama in such a short period of time.

For me, it’s also a dramatic change of pace from shooting weddings and models and actors and families and children and everything else I do. I actually believe that it’s good to shoot a wide variety of things. It challenges me, it makes me step outside comfort zones.

I think it makes me a better photographer.

And, it makes me happy that I’m on the viewfinder side of the camera and not the opposite one.

In todays age there is way too much information and misinformation floating around about how to exercise, when to exercise, and what to exercise.
So what is the good and what is the bad information and how do you figure it out?
“Michael always says ‘K-I-S-S. Keep it simple, stupid.’ Great advice. Hurts my feelings every time.” -Dwight

How often should I exercise?
- To achieve results and better your body, I recommend 5 to 6 days of exercise per week. Now understand that “exercise” does not just mean, go on the treadmill for 60 minutes six times a week or strength train everyday. It means that you need to give your body the proper movements it requires to operate correctly, which have been eliminated through modern conveniences and desk jobs. I use three types of exercise throughout the week. These routines are exactly what your body needs to function properly and be in perfect health.

What kind of exercising do I do and how much?
1. Strength Training – can be done 3 to 5 times a week, depending on personal goals and limitations. This should be performed at a minimum of 30 minutes and up to 90 minutes per session.

2. Metabolic Conditioning – I would recommend 2-3 times per week of met-con at 30-45 minutes. I prefer shorter bouts with higher intensity (75-90% of Max Heart Rate), the reason is that this will increase anaerobic AND aerobic strength, decrease the risk of plateauing, burn more calories during and after, and get the work out done quicker.

3. Sport- This is almost any sport you can think of; soccer, football, basketball, tennis, ect. These are all great for your body, mind and mood. There is almost nothing better for you than being outside in the fresh air and having fun. This should be done at least once and up to 4 times or even more per week.

I would recommend going over your goals with an educated trainer and having a specific program developed for your specific needs.

I need to start this blog off with a terrible myth that women’s magazines and the “fitne

I need to start this blog off with a terrible myth that women’s magazines and the “fitness” industry has been vomiting for the past 30 years or so…
“If women use weights or try to get stronger they get BULKY”
If I hear one more fitness “professional” regurgitate this misinformation, I will literally regurgitate misinformation all over their skintight Under Armour unitard!

Women NEED to build muscle, and it doesn’t mean you will get… dare I say… bulky. It means you will get healthy! So, I’m going to give you four quick reasons why strength training is essential for women. First, as you gain lean mass, you lose excess fat. Second, having more muscle mass means you burn more fat while rested. Third, your body has more protein, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Fourth, you will live longer and be happier.

Now, I want to figure out where and why this heresy ever started. The first problem is who these “pros” are using for examples. Lets take a look…

This is one of the female bodybuilders who has no focus on health, just the sport of aesthetics (which has been, for some reason, mistaken for an actual sport and often even called “professional weightlifting”). She eats “clean” (protein shakes, spinach and 2 ounces of chicken per day), abuses steroids, has a bigger bulge and stronger jaw line than her bile filled, ripped boyfriend/roid dealer. This person is physiologically ill (and psychologically, but that’s another topic).
*I want to follow this with the fact that there ARE body builders who follow the healthy and natural path, they would NOT be included in my “roid rage”. This is obviously just not one of them. So I don’t want to hear it.

The next thing to consider is body shape and size. If you are a woman with a large build, nothing is going to change that. You don’t have to look like a long haired man, like the picture above (by the way, that is a real picture), but you can still build muscle and look great.

Here is a video of an Olympic weightlifter who lives for performance. She eats for performance (which is, unlike endurance sports, exactly how you would eat to become healthy or lose fat) and exercises for performance. This woman is medium/small frame, lifts heavier than your husband and still looks like a fit, healthy woman.
*The very large women you see lifting are this way because they chose to be, they are striving for high weight classes and are more focused on sport than aesthetics.

If you are still skeptical, I challenge you to come in and train with me. If I don’t convince you, you get your money back plus a notarized handwritten letter that states I am a cocky uneducated asshole who should quit training on my own and go re-educate myself with Men’s Health and Muscle & Fiction magazines.

I read there was a Long–Billed Curlew hanging around and by watching some birdwatchers we found it! What an elegant bird. I could not see what it was getting 10 or 12 inckes under the sand.

Video window basics: http://bit.ly/1Ke2Y1

I also saw my first-of-season Coots, Redhead Ducks, Ruddy Ducks and Scaup and a flock of around 20 Magnificent Frigatebirds. Also in the video are Oystercatchers, Terns, Plovers, Marbled Godwits and a mysterious and beautilful feathery-flowered plant that enchanted me. Please tell me if you have a clue what it might be. The stick insects were mating despite the papparazzi. One shorebird remained unidentified, might be a Short-Billed Dowitcher.
