China Glaze Ruby Pumps, Cleopatra

I just bought the coveted China Glaze’s Ruby Slippers and Cleopatra (as well as Nova and Medallion) at Sally’s.  They were having a 2/$10 special.  I must say, I don’t own a lot of reds but this one is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!! It’s even more beautiful than everyone has made it out to be.  I usually stick to deeper, wine/burgundy reds, but this one is straight on red!!! A very vivid, intense, semi-jelly ruby red with fiery red shimmer ( the particles are larger than micro glitter).  The shimmer seems to disperse itself all over at varying depths so they look almost 3 dimensional.  Very cool!  I also added Cleopatra which is a beautiful 18K gold small glitter with a few silver holographic glitters mixed in.  This is all suspended in a clear base.  I used 3 coats for full coverage and I experienced no application problems.  The polishes are available at e-retailers and Sally’s Beauty Supply.  Another cool polish.  I added Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen in Honeydew on the toes.  It’s the perfect pedicure colour for the 90 degree weather I’m experiencing here in Trinidad.  Hope you enjoy!!

Cleopatra VII

Now that we’ve had our Christmas dinner – nasi goreng in my case – LacusCurtius’ Bill Thayer serves us something to read and help you digest it: Cleopatra’s Pearls, an article that originally appeared in the Classical Journal 52 (1957).

It’s a highly amusing piece that contains parallel stories, tricks to dissolve your own pearls (“a small pearl is dissolved in boiling vinegar in 8‑15 minutes” – or perhaps not), an apt quote from Hamlet, a relevant comparison to the use of Coca Cola, and a good joke at the end. Enjoy!

I must admit I didn’t know much about this dvd when purchasing it as there was no write up on it.
If you like live crappy recordings then this would be great for you.
If you like the original music video clips then this wont be for you, as I found out.

They’ve pulled a huge bit of (what they think is) a Cleopatra-era temple to Isis out of water at Alexandria, Egypt. Read about it on the BBC website here

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt – Egyptian archaeologists on Thursday lifted an ancient granite temple pylon out of the waters of the Mediterranean, where it had lain for centuries as part of the palace complex of Cleopatra, submerged in Alexandria’s harbor.

The pylon, which once stood at the entrance to a temple of Isis, is to be the centerpiece of an ambitious underwater museum planned by Egypt to showcase the sunken city, which is believed to have been toppled into the sea by earthquakes in the 4th century.

Divers and underwater archaeologists used a giant crane and ropes to lift the 9-ton, 7.4-foot-tall pylon, covered with muck and seaweed, out of the murky waters. It was deposited ashore as Egypt’s top archaeologist Zahi Hawass and other officials watched.

The temple, dedicated to Isis, a pharaonic goddess of fertility and magic, is at least 2,050 years old, but likely much older, officials said. It was part of a sprawling palace from which the 1st Century B.C. Queen Cleopatra and her predecessors in the Ptolemaic dynasty ruled Egypt.

The palace and other buildings and monuments now lay strewn on the seabed in the harbor of Alexandria, the second largest city of Egypt. Archaeologists have been exploring the underwater ruins since the 1990s. The Isis temple was uncovered by a Greek team in 1998.

i just remembered the first time i watched a silent film. it was on television late night at my grandma’s and my best friend was staying over. i think it was about cleopatra… i will try to find the film but anyway i was so intrigued by how it looked because it was so spooky and different. i think that night was when we were freaking out about the really long-legged horse in that coldplay video.. iiii never meant to cause you trouble…

Now Harlequin covers have hit Las Vegas!  Check out this super LA Times article about a “free exhibit, “The Heart of a Woman: Harlequin Cover Art 1949-2009,” which recently opened at Paris Las Vegas.”

According to LA Times reporter, Ashley Power, the exhibit “…showcases provocative and thought-provoking images from a publishing house that has had its ‘pulse on women’s desires’ for 60 years.”

Un poco por casualidad ayer terminé entrando en la antigua Casa de Correos de la Puerta del Sol (sí, el edificio del reloj de las campanadas), donde no había estado nunca, para ver una exposición de fotografía de Fernando Manso que intenta captar un “Madrid Inédito” (a pesar de que las fotos ya están puiblicadas en un libro). Una de las premisas venía a ser nada de cielos azules, por lo que hay un montón de juegos cromáticos en las nubes, escenas de niebla y, lo que sí que es altamente inusual en Madrid capital, escenas nevadas. Sin embargo, también hay mucho HDR y fotos directamente quemadas para que se vean más blancas.

Esta última ya no es que no me sepa dónde es, sino que además la he tenido que fotografíar con el móvil del catálogo de la exposición, así que es muy lamentable. Pero en grande era una de las más bonitas. Hay más que no he encontrado por la red. Quien se dé prisa aún puede ver la exposición hasta mañana. Después, parece que habrá siete fotos en el bar del Hotel The Westin Palace de Madrid hasta el 15 de enero. Como colofón de ésta, decir que gracias a la exposición me he enterado de que en Madrid hay un bosque de Finlandia. Está en Rascafría, y además del embalse fotografiado, al parecer tiene una sauna…

Luego me llevaron a la Fundación Caja Madrid, (enfrente del Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales), donde tenían la exposición Lágrimas de Eros, que recoge muestras de pintura, escultura, fotografía y un vídeo sobre la relación entre Eros y Thanatos: la accidental muerte de Jacinto a manos de Apolo, el encantamiento de Endimión para que Selene pudiera observarle en su sueño (que es donde han plantado un vídeo de David Beckham durmiendo. El problema del arte es que todo es arte…), los suicidios de Ofelia y de Cleopatra, la cabeza decapitada de San Juan Bautista ante Salomé, la inquietante comparación con la cabeza decapitada de Goliath ante David, y alguna cosita más.

La exposición se anunciaba con las maravillosas Lágrimas de Man Ray:
