Jeremiah Eames Rankin died this date, 11/28/1904, at Cleveland, Ohio.  He was a  Congregationalist who wrote “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”  He pastored in Potsdam, New York, St. Albans, Vermont, Lowell, Massachusetts, Charlestown, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and Orange, New Jersey.  Rankin also was a professor of homiletics and pastoral theology (1878-’84) and from 1889 til his death was president of Howard University.  He was born 1/2/1828, at Thornton, New Hampshire.

Since Cleveland isn’t on most people’s list of top vacation spots, we are really happy when our friends come visit us. �First because we miss our friends but also because it gives us a chance to visit our favorite restaurants around town. �Last week we had 2 visitors. �Kurt’s buddy, Rob Molloy, came in from Chicago to meet all the new Cleveland babies. �We took Rob to 2 of our favorite restaurants, Lucky’s Cafe and Bar Symon. �Henry had a fun time listening to iTunes with him.

Then later in the week, my friend Ami came over to meet Henry. �Ami worked with both Kurt and I in Chicago and was in town on business and lucky for us, her dinner plans cancelled. �I really enjoyed a girls night out (without Henry) and was finally able to eat at Tartine Bistro in Rocky River. �It was really good and another restaurant that serves seasonal dishes with lots of local Ohio ingredients.

Oh hey everyone, it’s a whole new two-page True Story About. This time, the “about” refers to Graffiti, not in the broader, more general sense, but rather a specific instance of it. It happened one day in… well, I’ll let the story speak for itself.

ABOUT THOSE BROWNS!  OMG  They stink!  OK if they are professionals they shouldn’t even need a coach.   Don’t you think the players should be fined for lack of ability?  We have high school teams that do better than the Browns.  I am sure that Eric will move on to another team and do well for himself just like the other coaches the Browns have had.  Is this the curse of Paul Brown????

For entertainment purposes only, I’m updating my 2009 NFL survivor picks here every week. The rules are simple. Pick a team to win each week. If they win, move on to the next week. Of course you can’t pick the same team twice in the same regular season.  If you want to read the entire post and each week’s picks and analysis, click here.  If you don’t care (and I completely understand if you don’t, since those weeks have passed and we really should just be moving forward, right?), then here’s a quick recap of my strategy.

Rule #1: Focus on the Negative

Rather than focus on what teams are good, focus on what teams are bad (and in some cases, really really bad). And there are plenty of them.  St. Louis, Cleveland, Kansas City, Oakland, Tampa Bay, and Detroit. If those teams (dubbed the “Sucky Six”) are not able to lose (if I’ve already picked their opponent), then consider the match-ups.  And all bets are literally off when one plays another (St. Louis v. Detroit in Week 8? No. Thank. You.)

Rule #2: Don’t Save a Team

Remember: don’t worry about “saving” a team for later. You can’t advance to the next week unless you survive this week. If there’s a sure thing involving one of the elite teams over one of the Sucky Six (i.e., Indy over the Rams), take it. Don’t get eliminated because you left Indy on the table in hopes of using them later in the season.

Cincinnati (over Cleveland)

• Hello Week 12! Never seen you before.
• This week’s nominees: Cincinnati (vs. Cleveland), Dallas (v. Oakland), San Diego (v. Kansas City), Green Bay (at Detroit), Atlanta (v. Tampa Bay).
• I’ve already used San Diego and Atlanta, so we’re left with Cinci, Dallas and Green Bay.
• I don’t like taking teams on the road in survivor if I can help it, so Green Bay is out (even though the Lions are terrible and will likely be without Stafford).
• We’re down to Dallas and Cincinnati. Dallas is tempting, but it’s a short week, Romo has some back issues, and the Raiders are just feisty enough without Jamarcus Russell that I’m going to steer clear of them.
• I’m going with Cincinnati over Cleveland. After losing on the road at Oakland, the Bengals are back at home and eager to prove they are among the best in the league. Oh, and they’re playing Cleveland.
• And if you do have San Diego and Atlanta still available, do not hesitate to take them.

The truth of the matter is: When you cook six nights a week for a living, and even more on top of that for a catering business, the last thing you feel like doing on a holiday is COOKING! On the contrary, you can’t wait to sit back and let someone else do the cooking for you!

Normally, that might mean going out and looking for a restaurant where someone else is serving up a traditional Thanksgiving feast. But here’s another secret: In our family, most of us aren’t crazy about turkey. So what do we do? We go to the Siam Cafe on St. Clair Avenue and order up a Peking duck and all the trimmings for a great Chinese dinner.

We hope you have a terrific Thanksgiving tomorrow, however you celebrate it.
