We’re always so thrilled when our books make it into the year-end round-ups. It’s great PR for the books and the authors who work so hard on them as well as very helpful for sales as we head into the holiday gift-giving season.

John Mariani is one of the country’s greatest culinary authorities and writes for The New York Times, Esquire Magazine and many others. His annual holiday round-up comes just after Thanksgiving each year and appears first on his Virtual Gourmet Newsletter.

Our projects have appeared in the round-up before, but this year marks a first for us as not just one, but three of our cookbook projects were chosen. ”The Hot & Hot Fish Club Cookbook“, “Classic Lebanese Cuisine“, and “Why Italians Love to Talk About Food” all made the cut this year and we couldn’t be happier.

To read what he has to say about each, just click the following link: Virtual Gourmet Newsletter

As someone who isn’t particularly crazy about the official retweet implementation, I’m not so excited about that, but there’s still a “Quote Tweet” option as well, which lets you do things the old way.

There’s a lot of other new features and improvements, too, including tweet geotagging, spam reporting via the official Twitter API, What the Trend explanation of trending topics, and more. Once again, Tweetie has returned to the top of the heap, in terms of both functionality and UI.

Lists can be created, edited, managed and viewed, all from within Tweetie 2 now. That means if users post links in the “@user/list” format, you’ll be able to just click on it to view said list. Your own list management and creation features are accessible via the ellipsis (…) icon. I still have yet to create any of my own lists, but testing this out with the lists of others, it seemed to be well-implemented.

New video upload and hosting options are also available. You can now select from Posterous, Mobypicture and Vid.ly, in addition to TwitVid and yFrog. Maybe best of all among the UI changes, you can now disable automatic browser rotation, which is a feature every landscape-capable app should have, speaking as someone who often browses lying down in bed or on the couch.

Lots of other smaller changes and a long list of bug fixes are also included as part of the 2.1 update. The update is free for all Tweetie 2 users, but if you haven’t yet made the leap to the newest version, the $2.99 price tag is seeming incredibly reasonable right about now.

It seems like a blink of an eye since it was announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympic

It seems like a blink of an eye since it was announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, the first time in over six decades but we are now less than 1,000 days until the opening ceremony on 27th July 2012. Yet it still seems a little early for businesses to be thinking about the impact London 2012 will have on them.

Over the course of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the UK will receive an estimated 9.2 million visitors. There will be 14,500 athletes from 205 countries, 21,000 media & broadcasters, 70,000 volunteers, 15,000 coaches & officials. There will be 34 Olympic competition venues across the country, including Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and Weymouth. There are also 639 training facilities, with only 96 in London, and there will be 30 live sites, or public screen areas, across the country. All of which means there will be many parts of the country that feel the impact of London 2012.

To help businesses prepare, Porter Novelli’s client BT, is working in partnership with Cisco to create a community where businesses can come together to discuss issues around London 2012, share their experiences, plan their approach and spread best practice. In short, to become Business Ready. As well as helping UK businesses make the most of the opportunity, the overarching aim of the project is to create a legacy of business knowledge that can be passed on to Rio 2016 and beyond.

The community is currently based on Linkedin but will evolve during the run up to London 2012 along with the needs and desires of the group. We’re very excited to be part of the community and can’t wait to see how it develops over the coming weeks, months and years.

In order to create an echo server we must introduce the concept of socket in C. Sockets can be seen

In order to create an echo server we must introduce the concept of socket in C.

Sockets can be seen as an endpoint for cummunication, and in C are created by including in our code the following libraries:

<sys/types.h>
<sys/socket.h>

and by using the function int socket(int domain, int type, int protocol)

Let’s explain briefly the three variables used in the previous function:

int domain represents a communication domain, the protocol family to be used for communication (common values are AF_UNIX for local communication, AF_INET for IPv4 Internet protocols and AF_INET6 for IPv6).

int type specifies the communication semantics (commonly we use SOCK_STREAM that provides sequenced, reliable, two-way, connection-based byte streams but can be used other types as SOCK_RAW which provides raw network protocol access).

int protocol indicates a particular protocol for the socket, normally only a single protocol exists for supporting a particular socket type in a family but in some cases there can be more than one and this variable specifies which one should be used.

Function int socket(…) returns a socket descriptor if valid, otherwise it returns -1 and a errno to handle the error. To send or receive data (e.g to/from another process or machine) the socket must be connected to another socket.

Since we want to create a server first, we must introduce a way to setup a port to listen to. We do this by using the function int bind(int sockfd, struct sockaddr *addr, socklen_t addrlen) (the same libraries as before must have included). This function assigns the address specified by variable addr to the socket assigned to socket descriptor sockfd. addrlen specifies the size in bytes of the address structure pointed to by addr.

The struct sockaddr is structure representing an IP socket address, thus a pain (IP, PORT). This structure may change based on protocol you use, but is something like:

struct sockaddr {
	short sin_family;         // e.g. AF_INET for IPv4
	unsigned short sin_port;  // e.g. htons(4320) see htons()
	struct in_addr sin_addr; // structure containing the IP address
	char sin_zero[8];
};

where:

in_addr {
	unsigned long s_addr;
};

If successful, bind() returns 0; otherwise it returns -1 and sets errno to indicate the error.
After binding, listening operation can be started as: listen(int sockefd, in queue) where socketfd is our socket descriptor and queue is the maximum number of connections pending. If successful, listen() returns 0; otherwise it returns -1 and sets errno to indicate the error.

To accept a connection we use the function int accept(int sockfd, struct sockaddr *addr, socklen_t *addrlen) which is used with connection based sockets such as streams. Argument sockfd is a socket that has been created with socket(), bound to a local address with bind(), and is listening for connections after a listen(). The argument addr is a pointer to a sockaddr structure filled in with the address of the peer socket, as known to the communications layer. The addrlen argument is a value-result argument: the caller must ini tialize it to contain the size (in bytes) of the structure pointed to by addr; on return it will contain the actual size of the peer address. If an error occurs, -1 is returned and errno is set to indicate the cause.

For exchanging data we use two functions: ssize_t send(int sockfd, const void *buf, size_t len, int flags) where buf is the message you want to send, flags is usually set to 0 and the function ssize_t recv(int sockfd, void *buf, size_t len, int flags). These functions return -1 in case of an error.

Finally to close a connection we include library and call int close(int sockfd)

Here an example of a server that waits for a connection and greets the user connected. (note that I did not check the return value of the functions):

#include <sys/socket.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <unistd.h>

#define MAX_CONNECTIONS    (1000)
#define MAX_LINE           (1000)

int main()
{
  int sockfd;
  sockfd = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TCP);

  struct sockaddr_in my_addr;
  my_addr.sin_family = AF_INET;
  my_addr.sin_addr.s_addr = htonl(INADDR_ANY);
  my_addr.sin_port = htons(4000);

  bind(sockfd, (struct sockaddr *) &my_addr, sizeof(my_addr));
  listen(sockfd, MAX_CONNECTIONS);

  while(1)
    {
      struct sockaddr_in client_addr;
      int client_len = sizeof(client_addr);

      int client_fd = accept(sockfd, (struct sockaddr *) &client_addr,  &client_len);

      char buf[MAX_LINE];
      strcpy(buf, "Hello user!\n");
      send(client_fd, buf, strlen(buf) + 1, 0);
      close(client_fd);
    }
}

To run the server type in one shell the following:

bellerofonte@pegaso:~$ ./echoserv

and in another:

bellerofonte@pegaso:~$ telnet localhost 4000
Trying ::1...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.

First and foremost, think this strategy through very carefully. If you miss the mark you will not on

First and foremost, think this strategy through very carefully. If you miss the mark you will not only waste your money but will also run the risk of reducing your goodwill, instead of enhancing it. Very treacherous ground, filled with landmines.

Here are some guidelines if you choose to embark on this journey.

1. The gift should in some way be commensurate with the value of the customer to you. Do not cheap out on your very valuable clients, overspend, it will come back to you many fold.

2. Better off sending a card, or making a donation on behalf of the client than giving them cheap gifts with little thought.

3. Customized gifts with the clients name or your own logo or brand can be perceived as tacky….depends on many aspects specifically and most importantly how nice the gift is and how nice the imprint is, if it’s embroidered maybe ok, if it’s silk screened getting marginal, be creative and tasteful and it will be a winner. The nicer the gift the easier it is to customize, you must execute perfectly. If you do, it can be a winner for you.

4. Specific gifts to a restaurant with enough paid to cover the entire meal, wine and the tip…do it right or do not do it. Obviously you can only do this a limited number of times, your best clients. A special restaurant with real show off potential….. Flash works, big dividends.

5. If possible enclose a personal thank you note, signed and written by you. You can manage, it’s not that difficult. If on a low budget, this will demonstrate you do care even with a low value item.

6. Special food items can be a good choice, steaks from Omaha, honey from somewhere special, nicely packaged, lobsters from Maine, jams, coffee from Jamaica, cigars, get very good ones, Cuban’s, are a knock out if you have the connections.

7. Low budget but great potential, a custom art seasonal card, with a personal note….nice.

8. If possible, a gift that somehow reflects what you do is a great way to go, make something special along the lines of what your company produces, sells, represents, in some way is a great statement.

Either do it well, or do not do it at all. Be creative and spend a few extra dollars. It must be something the recipient will want to save, wear, use and enjoy, and think of you every time, or you are wasting your money. If you do it well, it is the best goodwill enhancer imaginable and you will have a friend and loyal customer for years. Take it out of your advertising budget. If you have none, make it your advertising budget, it may be the best program possible.

Beware of sizes, get it right. Call a secretary, or wife, or guess correctly and upgrade. Instead of a t-shirt do collared golf jerseys, if it is a baseball cap make it one that is sized and made of quality material, like the pros. If it is a t-shirt have it printed front, back, maybe arm, maybe custom art work…make it special, on a high quality made in America 100% cotton.

I do not recommend calendars as everyone has their own style and needs, and will not switch easily. Money wasted.

Be creative, what I discussed above was for the purpose of showing you the context for deciding what to do…. Purpose: Getting you a return on your investment and thus very worthwhile, worthy of the investment. It should return far more than you spend if you do it correctly.

Quality and flash at any price level that works for you.

Figure it out. What makes the right customer gifts?

# apt-get install -y dhcp3-server

kemudian, konfigurasi file dhcpd.conf

authorative ;
ddns-update-style none ;
option nbgrub-menu code = text ;
default-lease-time 600 ;
max-lease-time 3600 ;

Default-lease time dan max-lease time dalam satuan detik.

subnet 167.205.77.0 netmask 255.255.255.224 {
option routers 167.205.77.x;
range 167.205.77.6 167.205.77.28 ;

Kemudian, aktifkan dhcp daemon. Pastikan tidak ada error yang muncul.

# /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start

Dan, jadilah DHCP server kita secara standar

Fitur Lain :

host pinkers { hardware ethernet 00:BC:28:26:53:24; fixed-address 167.205.77.17; }

nameserver 167.205.77.77

option domain-name-servers 167.205.99.100, 167.205.98.89;
option domain-name “pink.itb.ac.id”;

Kemudian restart dhcp daemon :

# /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart

nameserver 167.205.99.100
nameserver 167.205.98.89

Hola, jadilah DHCP Server kita..

Last time I have promised to put my works in this blog, on the last project in my Design 102 module

Last time I have promised to put my works in this blog, on the last project in my Design 102 module of the whole semester, called as Project ‘…for the…’. It is a project which we design a dwelling for our specific client in Malacca.

My chosen client through a lucky draw, at first is Christie Brinkley, a famous model. However, I am given a second chance of lucky pick since there is not much thing can be done on model. Hence, my second and final pick is Amadeus Mozart, a famous musician.

Part 1: Client and Function.

I need to get to know deeply onto the personalities and characteristics of Mozart. What is special about him? What is interesting about him? Mozart is addicted to music when he was only 3 years old, and he was able to write music when he was aged 5 only. He completed his works very fast, but stress was his main problem. His most famous work is ‘Requiem’, which is incomplete, as he felt into severe illness and died before even he could finish it. I am trying to design a place for him to complete the music and perform it.

Client and Function poster (1 A2 size board)

Part 2: Site Analysis.

We had conducted a site visit at Malacca Old Town area. I have chosen a water edge area, a very spacious empty area in the region of new development. Many modern buildings are built and being under construction there, and my dwelling will be notified as part of it, proudly. The calm atmosphere from the peaceful surrounding, flowing water, and windy breeze will surely be effective in reducing stress by Mozart while writing his marvelous piece of work. My site faces the Maritime Museum, a museum built in a form of Portuguese ship and Taming Sari Tower, an observation tower basically for tourism.

My chosen site sits right beside a newly-built park, in a geometrical pattern. My dwelling will be an extension of the park, benefiting the existing pedestrian walkways, which will direct visitors from the tourist center nearby, to the square, next to the park, and finally, to my dwelling. It will be able to attract visitors in such a strategic location of tourist hotspot.

Site Analysis board (1 A0 size board)

Part 3: Design.

The name of my dwelling will be very grand, ‘Performing Center of Amadeus Mozart’. Malacca has many museums, many cafes, many tourist spots, but don’t have a proper performing center. There are many spaces in my dwelling, making it as multi-purpose, such as lobby area to welcome visitors, gallery to display his masterpieces, outdoor platform for audiences to enjoy the surrounding, private working space for Mozart to write his music, and staff area for performers to prepare for performances. The main space will be the performing hall, with a stage and concrete terraces as seating area.

Two concepts are chosen based on Mozart’s personalities.

1. Emphasis on external appearance

My dwelling will have a grand and modern outlook appearance, and is easily visible from afar, especially from the Taming Sari Tower and Maritime Museum. It is located on the spacious empty land in the middle of the reclaimed land (Malacca River Square) on Malacca River. The large scale of the project making it more distinctive. The interior is very plain, with no decorations or ornamentations. The seating area of performing hall is just of concrete terraces, and all the floor, wall, and roof have no finishes. Even the stage is simple, with a background of glass screen.

Mozart emphasized on his outer appearance. He loved to wear elegant clothing. However, he was very poor and has financial difficulties. Hence, this concept suits him the most, and shows that this place is dedicated for him, while not letting the others know (also not letting the others know that he was actually poor).

2. No distinction between exterior and interior.

As I have mentioned just now, there is so much difference between exterior and interior look of the building. Now, there is another concept of linking them back, harmoniously, by using one material: glass. Mozart should not be enclosed by solid walls when he was writing his music, as this will lead to stress easily. Hence, his private working space is built mainly of glass, four walls of glass to separate him from the outside weather, while combining the area with the surrounding. He will be enjoying the time of writing his music with the surrounding at a high level. Imagine, how comfortable he will be…

Usual backdrop of current performing center is a plain black wallpaper. For my performing center, it will be different. The backdrop will be the lively background showing the Maritime Museum and Taming Sari Tower with the surrounding. By this way, audiences will feel different kind of atmosphere at different time of performances. It will not attracts the eyes of the audiences during performances but will affect the mood of the audiences. They have entered a boring, dull and plain hall, hence, their focus will be just on the music, while the backdrop plays a role to regain their feeling of being carried away by the music performed by Mozart. The glass backdrop will also provides natural lighting during daytime of performances. The side facade of the gallery is also built of glass, but of two different glass. There are no nice views visible from that side, hence translucent glass will be used, so that the visitors will only enjoy the music sheets displayed. The upper facade will be of transparent movable glass, which allows sunlight to enter for natural lighting, and for air ventilation, supporting the idea of a green building, in a clean, unpolluted and historical city of Malacca. The facade which faces the park will be of solid wall and glass wall. Solid wall separates the performing hall from the outside, so that the activities occuring in the park and square will not disturb the performances. However, the visible lobby from outside will be able to attract visitors to enter.

The entrance to the private working space is small, and short, specially dedicated to Amadeus Mozart. He was s short and small person. However, as soon as he enters the area, the large volume of the space will provides greater freedom and movement for him, thus, giving him more space and less pressure to complete his music. He can went out to the nearby park to enjoy the scenery too.

I have explained almost all of the things related to my design.

Part 4: Interior space.

I have chosen a portion of the performing hall, to be investigated on its finishes, lighting, and construction details. The foundation will be simple, since there is already an existing concrete surface on the ground and the site sits on a reclaimed land (reinforced and stabilized). The portion is on the side showing part of the seating area, stage, and entrance to the outdoor platform, accompanied by the glass backdrop. Among the most interesting feature of my design is the glass backdrop. There is no finishes on it, as i have explained earlier. The lighting during the day is provided with aid of the glass screen. The materials used to built is mainly of concrete and glass.

My overall presentation board (5 A1 sized board combined together):

Satisfactia clientului are o ecuatie simpla: este rezultatul scaderii performante percepute minus as

Satisfactia clientului are o ecuatie simpla: este rezultatul scaderii performante percepute minus asteptari.

Dear Simon,
Disregarding the fact that you have still not paid me for work I completed earlier this year despite several assertions that you would do so, I would be delighted to spend my free time creating logos and pie charts for you based on further vague promises of future possible payment. Please find attached pie chart as requested and let me know of any changes required.
Regards, David.

If you go outside and just take a few quiet moments in observing people, you will notice that almost everyone are carrying their own gadgets:  You will see that businessmen are busy talking to someone on their cellphones; teenagers have their ears plugged with earphones listening to their i-pods;  children are busy playing with their PSP;  moms listening to their self-help audio in their MP3s;  and employees researching on the internet using their laptops;

Now you ask yourself this: “What would this people want for christmas?” I’m pretty sure that almost all of your family members have one of the gadgets that were mentioned above. Well, enough thinking and let me help you.

I had one of my friend, Shirley Choa, showed me her fantastic product. It is called Hamburger Mini Speakers. When she showed me this tiny speaker, I couldn’t believe how loud and clear the sound was! You can also carry it anywhere with you without worrying about carrying bulky speakers and looking for a power outlet to make it work. It is so convenient for me I bought the red one at first sight.

For you tech-wise guys out there, the following specifications are for you:

Dimension: (L) 55.5 MM x (H) 77 MM
Net Weight: 112g
Speaker: 36MM
Input: L/R380mV
Power Output: 7W X 2
S/N: 80dB
AMP Freq Range: 280Hz %u2013 16KHz
Charge Voltage: 5V 0.5V
Charge Time: 1.DC 5V 200MA%u2014300MA about 2.5 hours
3 USB about 4 hours
Suitable Temperature: 0°C-40°C

Now what’s even greater here is that she also have Double-Speakers. They are two mini speakers which can be put together– which would look like an egg. The bottom part of the speakers are magnetized, which means you can place them anywhere that’s metallic. Double the sound means double the fun!

With this kind of gift to my loved ones, I’m pretty sure they would remember the day I gave it to them. The children would be very happy with the fantastic sound on their PSP and teens can now party without carrying large stereos!
